To whom it may concern,

I am writing this letter of recommendation for Michael Zughbaba. Michael was a student of mine
at Buckingham Charter Magnet High School in our World History Class during his sophomore year 
(2016­2017).

Michael is an excellent candidate for Boys State. During his time in history class, he always 
carried himself in a professional and gentlemanly manner. His displays of civility and his civic­minded 
approach to problems that have arisen in the later 20th and 21st centuries are core values that I believe can
be further strengthened by attending Boys State.

Throughout Michael’s sophomore year, he worked diligently to ensure that he was at the top of 
his class. His ability to communicate clearly is a very strong point for him as a person as a student. To 
give an example, he also was always sure to pay attention to multiple points of view in our classroom 
debates and use these in the strengthening of his own arguments in such a way as to garner support for 
his own position while also gaining respect from the opposing side for seeing things from their 
perspective. In a shrinking world, with many more perspectives to take into consideration having this 
skill set is imperative, particularly in the realm of government. 

Michael has striven to further enlighten himself in history and government by traveling to 
Washington D.C. to learn more about our nation’s diverse history and democratic institutions. He also 
has travelled to Jordan to gain a more worldly understanding of an area that has been, and continues to 
be, a very important strategic and economic focal point for the United States and the world.

Balancing his academic success with a wide variety of extracurricular activities has made 
Michael a very well­rounded individual. Not only does he maintain a high academic standing in all of 
his subject areas, but he also participates in playing basketball and flag football for BCMHS while also 
taking additional college courses at the community colleges in both Solano and Napa Valley.

It is hard to imagine being able to do much more with such a busy schedule but, when Michael 
has the time, he also volunteers with Northbay Healthcare and to help his underclassmen with their own 
studies, student problems, or any other myriad of issues that may arise with them. His strong leadership 
qualities gained him the nickname of “The Senator” in world history class last year. You will be hard 
pressed to find other Boys State candidates with such a glowing resume at so young an age.
