1. Find the following limits without L’Hôpital’s Rule:

(a)
sin(7t)
lim
t→0 tan(3t)
(b)
(x + h)3 − x3
lim
h→0 h
(c) √
1 + 2 sin θ
lim
θ→− π4 cos 2θ

2. For each of the following limits, say whether l’Hospital’s Rule is applicable. If it is, specify what
type of indeterminate form it is and evaluate the limit using the rule.

sin θ cos θ − 1 ex

3. Find a and b such that f (x) is continuous

x + a
 x<0

f (x) = x + ax + b 0 ≤ x ≤ 2

bx 2<x

4. Evaluate sin−1 x + cos−1 x, −1 ≤ x ≤ 1

5. Find dx by implicit differentiation

(a) y sin(x2 ) = x sin(y 2 )

(b) ln y = tan−1 (x2 + 1)
6. The top of a ladder slides down a vertical wall at a rate of 0.675m/s. At the moment when the
bottom of the ladder is 3m from the wall, it slides away from the wall at a rate of 0.9m/s. How
long is the ladder?

7. A biologist is researching a type of bacteria. At time t = 0, there are one hundred bacteria.
Six hours later, the biologist measures 450 bacteria. Assuming exponential growth, what is the
relative growth rate for the bacteria.

ex −e−x
8. Find the linear approximation of sinh(x) = 2 at a = 0. Use this to approximate sinh(0.1).

9. Consider a mathematical model for a predator population interacting with a prey population.
If u(t) and v(t) denote the prey and predator population sizes at time t, and equation relating
the two is given by
ve−v uα e−αu = c
where c and α are positive constants. Use logarithmic differentiation to obtain an equation relat-
ing the relative per capita rate of change of the predator (i.e. v 0 /v) to that of the prey (i.e. u0 /u).
