• “In this bag I have here is an object that will give us a clue

about what we will be exploring today." Heart-shaped pillow
• In the bag is a heart-shaped pillow

3. Invite three students to the front of the class to reach into the bag and
feel the object inside. These students must give one adjective to
describe the object in the bag to their classmates.
• The three students then sit back down.
• Question the class on what they think the object in the bag might
be, based on the adjectives given by their classmates.

4. Reveal the object in the bag (heart-shaped pillow) to the class. Give

the class a chance to wonder about what the object might mean.
• “I wonder what things we associate with hearts. Close your

eyes for a moment and have a think about what this object

might mean to you."

5. Ask the students to open their eyes again, and introduce the book to

be read to the students, drawing connections to the object: Children’s Literature:

minutes

However sometimes those who care for us have to show their love

by saying no, and by making us do things that might not be fun

or make us happy. This is still love as these decisions are made

for our own good or safety.

• Ask the students about what some of these displays of love

might be. (e.g. doing homework, eating healthy food, saying ‘no’)

8. Begin reading the book to the students, prompting them to try and
recognise the different ways love is explored in the story.

9. When the book has been read, explain to students that we will be
