5E’s- ENGAGE (1-2 lessons)

 To capture student interest and find out what they think they know about how different substances can be combined, including by mixing, for a particular purpose.
 To elicit students’ questions about mixtures and their uses
 Diagnostic assessment used- in this lesson you will find out what the students already know about substances and how different substances can combine to create a mixture. This will allow you to take account of
students’ existing ideas when planning learning experiences

Closure

Students will turn to a partner and tell them

two things that they have learnt today,
students will also share this with the
classroom if they wish.

Students will add words onto the Word wall

Students will for homework choose two words

Students in which are more advanced will

receive additional questions in which will test
their knowledge.

Prior lesson

In a prior lesson students would have

explored the local environment to observe a
variety of materials, describing way in which
materials can be used.

Students create TWLH chart which will be

used a reviewed again in the last lesson.

Example: Trees, houses, pavement … etc.

Students went over solid and liquids mixtures

and what mixtures these result in.

Debrief with the class on their findings

Investigating the effects of mixing materials
together.

Suggesting why everyday objects such as

toys and clothes are made from different
materials.

Identifying materials such as paper that can

be changed and remade into other products.
