CHAPTER 3

SCOPE OF TRAINING

3.1 Introduction

Putra Perdana Construction Sdn. Bhd. (PPCSB) is a branch of Putra Perdana Berhad who
perform construction work.
In this chapter, students will explain about all the experiences that have been acquired over
a period of industrial training in Putra Perdana Construction. In addition, students will also make
overall conclusions about the activities and experiences that have been gained during the training
period.

3.2 Experience During Training Period

Experience within 20 weeks during industrial training at Putra Perdana Construction, the industrial
training students were exposed to various types of tasks associated with the construction. Through
this training, there are many things have learned and known in more detail about the construction
process in a given period.

In the first and second weeks of industrial training, the training students are required to
understand the drawings related to the project of The Serai Project before go to the project site.
The drawings that need to be understood include architectural drawings, structural drawings and
the public as well as mechanical and electrical drawings. The industrial training students also have
to involve in exercise and 'HIRADC Tool Box' in the morning from Monday to Friday.

 In the first month, the industrial training student are given the opportunity to be placed in
the Department of Planning. During in the Planning Department, student must should understand
the Progress Report covering the Serai Project progress by 'Biweekly' and 'Monthly'. Students are
also given the task to update and entering the percentage 'Progress Work Sequence' by covering
Blocks A, B, and Podium. In addition, students also need to understand the 'Master Work
Programme Rev.1’, the Serai project and update the progress of work in the 'Master Work
Programme'.

In addition to understanding the drawings and progress reports, students are also given the
opportunity to attend coordination meeting of subcontractor and architects held every week on
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. During the meeting of the subcontractor, the matters discussed
are related to the problems encountered on construction sites, the progress of work and planning
work to be completed on the date concerned. Besides that, meeting the architect discussed are
related to the problems of architects such as installation tiling, doors, windows and the work of
other architects. Industrial training student are also need to make 'slide presentation' for architect
meeting and minutes of meetings for subcontractors meeting. In addition, industrial training
student have to make a fine letter to subcontractors who did not attend the meeting.

During the period under the Department of Planning, industrial training student are also go
to the site project after a week to understand the drawings related to the project. Early exposure
actual work progressed on the project can be clearly seen by the student during the survey of the
project site. Among the works that can be seen is the work installation of tiling, skim coat, painting
work, waterproofing work, screeding and concrete work. Many new experiences and knowledge
gained by the student during their stay in the industrial training Planning Department.

After a period of one month was in the Department of Planning, industrial training student
are given the opportunity to be placed under the Department of Architect. Industrial training
student are given the task by supervisors to inspect defects in each unit at Block B for handover
works. The objective inspect defect is for see the quality of work and follow the specifications.
Subcontractor involved must rectify the defect of work in unit before handed to the client.

 In addition, the work of architects who are assigned to industrial training student is to make
‘Request For Inspection’ for brickwork and door frame. It is intended to get approval from the
client on the work performed. Industrial training student are also assigned to inspect the quality of
the installation tiling, progress and setting out. Some of the aspects to be considered during
installation tiling is neat, alignment and levelling.

Industrial training student also need to attend Architect meeting which discuss the
problems faced during the implementation and planning of the work to complete the job. During
this period, student are able to attend ‘CONQUAS Assessment’ which aims for work of checking
the quality in the completed units Inspections is to identify if there are defects in the unit such as
‘hollow’ on the floor and walls as well as the quality of work. Besides that, industrial training
student were also given the task for inspect marking level and take measuring at the lift lobby area
for the purpose of installation tiling works.

During in the Department of Architect, students are exposed a lot of tiling work and know
the quality of the architects work for purpose handover works. Industrial training student also gain
experience of method the installation of Lampang tiles installed in the pool area. Exposure to the
real work at the site project provides a lot of input to the student during industrial training period.

After a next month, industrial training student been transferred to QAQC Department,
QAQC Department was exposure as Quality Assurance and Quality Control, which is the
combination of quality assurance, the process or set of processes used to measure and assure the
quality of a product, and quality control, the process of ensuring products and services meet
consumer expectations. Quality assurance is process oriented and focuses on defect prevention,
while quality control is product oriented and focuses on defect identification.

In QAQC Department, student able to gain knowledge on method been used on site or
project. In order, student also learn to do a contractor submission. This contractor submission need
to submit to consultant for approval before further action. For example, all sampling, method
statements, catalogues and so on have to submit to consultant for approval. Furthermore, student
are learning about defects inspection before handover the unit to main contractor.
