FOREWORD

As a people we have been called and entrusted with a special responsibility to res-
pond to the message to Laodicea and be prepared for what is soon to come on the
earth. Not only do we need to have the preparation necessary to stand when the
judgments of the Lord shall be on the land, but first to have a part in the "refreshing"
and the last great work in the final warning to those who have not known the truth,
just before the close of probation. The gospel must first "be preached to all the world
for a witness to all nations." Many will not listen to what we say, so we must seriously
consider the witness given by our deportment, our dress, our work, our words, and by
all that we do or are.

"The great, grand work of bringing out a people who will have Christlike
characters, and who will be able to stand in the day of the Lord, is to be accomplished.
As long as we sail with the current of the world we need neither canvas nor oar. It is
when we turn squarely about to stem the current that our labors begin. Satan will
bring in every kind of theory to pervert the truth. The work will go hard, for since the
fall of Adam it has been the fashion of the world to sin. But Christ is on the field of ac-
tion. The Holy Spirit is at work. Divine agencies are combining with the human in
reshaping the character according to the perfect pattern, and man is to work out that
which God works in. Will we as a people do this God-given work? Will we carefully
heed all the light that has been given, keeping constantly before us the one object of
fitting students for the kingdom of God? If by faith we advance step by step in the
right way, following the Great Leader, light will shine along our pathway; and cir-
cumstances will occur to remove the difficulties. The approval of God will give hope,
and ministering angels will co-operate with us, bringing light and grace, and courage
and gladness." - Testimonies. vol. 6, pp. 129. 130.

" 'When the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because
the harvest is come.' Christ is waiting with longing desire for the manifestation of
Himself in His church. When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in
His people, then He will come to claim them as His own." -Christ's Object Lessons. p. 69.

When studying this series of lessons Becoming Like Christ every teacher should
seek wisdom from above so that we may: "Let our lessons be appropriate for the day
in which we live, and let our religious instruction be given in accordance with the
messages God sends." - Testimonies. vol. 6. p. 128.

THE WITNESS OF A GODLY HOME

A conciousness of the unseen presence of God and His angels will lead all to prac-
tice cleanliness and order so they may not lose the blessing of the heavenly
visitants

KEY TEXT: "And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my
people." Leviticus 26:12.

God's Plan Revealed in the Home D Sunday

September 30
1. What was the nature of the first home on earth and what lessons may be
learned from it? Genesis 2:8.

" . . . Let them [those who have the responsibility of selecting a home]
remember that the home on earth is to be a symbol of and a preparation for the home
in heaven. Life is a training school, from which parents and children are to be
graduated to the higher school in the mansions of God. As the location for a home is
sought, let this purpose direct the choice. . . ." - The Ministry of Heatilll(. p. 363.
2. What should characterize the true Christian home? What principle should
guide the furnishing and organization of the home? 1 John 2: 15, 16; Hebrews
13:2.

"Puritan plainness and simplicity should mark the dwellings and apparel of all
who believe the solemn truths for this time. All means needlessly expended in dress
or in the adorning of our houses is a waste of our Lord's money. It is defrauding the
cause of God for the gratification of pride. . . ."- Testimonies. vol. 5, p. 189.
"Let the homemakers resolve to live on a wiser plan. Let it be your first aim to
make a pleasant home. Be sure to provide the facilities that will lighten labor and pro-
mote health and comfort. Plan for the entertainment of the guests whom Christ has
bidden us welcome, and of whom He says, 'Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of
the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me.' Matthew 25:40."-The
Ministry of Hea/inl(, pp. 369, 370.

The Example of the Son ofMan D Monday

October 1
3. What were the circumstances under which Jesus lived and worked in this
world? Matthew 13:54, 55; 2 Corinthians 8:9.

"An expensive dwelling, elaborate furnishings, display, luxury, and ease, do not
furnish the conditions essential to a happy, useful life. Jesus came to this earth to
accomplish the greatest work ever accomplished among men. He came as God's am-
bassador, to show us how to live so as to secure life's best results. What were the

-5-
conditions chosen by the infinite Father for His Son? A secluded home in the Galilean
hills; a household sustained by honest, self-respecting labor; . . ." - The Ministry 0/ Heal-
ing. p. 365.
4. How did Jesus rebuke the self-centered and ambitious purpose of one who
came to Him to be one of His followers? Matthew 8:19,20.

"How much means is expended for things that are mere idols, things that
engross thought and time and strength which should be put to a higher use! How
much money is wasted on expensive houses and furniture, on selfish pleasures, lux-
urious and unwholesome food, hurtful indulgences! How much is squandered on gifts
that benefit no one! . . ." -Messages to Young Peopie. pp. 320,321.
"In the line of furniture, do not purchase one article merely to make a show. Get
things that will be useful, and that will bear handling. Educate the people to practice
self-denial. Let it be considered that every dollar may represent a soul, for someone
might be brought to a knowledge of the truth through the use of that dollar in the mis-
sionary work. . . _" - Testimonies to Ministers, p. 179.
Personal Cleanliness and Hygiene D Tuesday
October 2
5. What should be seen in all that a Christian does, how he dresses and how he
lives? Why must uncleanliness be carefully avoided? 1 Corinthians 14:40.

"The truth of God will never degrade, but will elevate the receiver, refine his
taste, sanctify his judgment, and perfect him for the company of the pure and holy
angels in the kingdom of God."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 415.
"Every form of uncleanliness tends to disease. Death-producing germs abound in
dark, neglected corners, in decaying refuse, in dampness and mold and must. No
waste vegetables or heaps of fallen leaves should be allowed to remain near the house
to decay and poison the air. Nothing unclean or decaying should be tolerated within
the home. . . ."- The Ministry 0/ Healing, p. 276.
6. What instructions were given to the children of Israel after they had been
delivered from Egypt? What new lessons did they need to learn?
Deuteronomy 23:9-14.

"In like manner all our actions are noticed by God. That God who was so par-
ticular that the children of Israel should grow up with habits of cleanliness will not
sanction any impurity in the home today."-Testimonies. vol. 6, p. 170.
Preparation So That a Blessing Could Be Received D Wednesday
October 3
7. What special instruction was given to the children of Israel in preparation
for them to stand in the presence of God at Sinai? Exodus 19:10, 11, 14.

"The necessity of personal cleanliness was taught in the most impressive man-
ner. Before gathering at Mount Sinai to listen to the proclamation of the law by the
voice of God, the people were required to wash both their persons and their clothing.
This direction was enforced on pain of death. No impurity was to be tolerated in the
presence of God." - The Ministry 0/ Healing, p. 279.
8. When a believer comes from the world, what change must be in the life and how
will this influence the attitude toward order and cleanliness? Ephesians 4:23, 24.

-6-
"Believers should be taught that even though they may be poor, they need not be
uncleanly or untidy in their persons or in their homes. Help must be given in this line
to those who seem to have no sense of the meaning and importance of cleanliness.
They are to be taught that those who are to represent the high and holy God must
keep their souls pure and clean, and that this purity must extend to their dress, and to
everything in the home, so that the ministering angels will have evidence that the
truth has wrought a change in the life, purifying the soul and refining the tastes.
Those, who, after receiving the truth, make no change in word or deportment, in
dress or surroundings, are living to themselves, not to Christ. They have not been
created anew in Christ Jesus unto purification and holiness." -Counsels on Health. pp.
101,102.
Unseen Visitors Leave a Blessing 0 Thursday
October 4
9. How can we make our homes, rooms and surroundings inviting to unseen
guests? What will we lose through disorder or uncleanliness? Leviticus
26:12.

"Order is heaven's first law, and the Lord desires His people to give in their
homes a representation of the order and harmony that pervade the heavenly courts.
Truth never places her delicate feet in a path of uncleanness or impurity. Truth does
not make men and women coarse or rough and untidy. It raises all who accept it to a
high level. Under Christ's influence, a work of constant refinement goes on.
". . . How can we invite Him into our homes unless all is neat and clean and
pure?" -Counsels on Health. p. 101.
" . . . Discern for yourself. Notice for yourself if all things in your own room are
spotless and in order, that nothing there may be an offense to God, but that when holy
angels shall pass through your room, they may be led to linger because attracted by
the prevailing order and cleanliness. . . ."- Testimonies. vol. 6, p. 171.
10. Why does the Lord repeat to us the instructions formerly given to Israel?
1 Corinthians 10:11.

"Special direction was given to the armies of Israel that everything in and around
their tents should be clean and orderly, lest the angel of the Lord, passing thrgugh the
encampment, should see their uncleanness. Would the Lord be particular to notice
these things? He would; for the fact is stated, lest in seeing their uncleanness, He
could not go forward with their armies to battle.
"He who was so particular that the children of Israel should cherish habits of
cleanliness, will not sanction any impurity in the homes of His people today. God
looks with disfavor on uncleanness of any kind. . . ." -Counsels on Health. p. 101.

"Some are very untidy in person. They need to be guided by the Holy Spirit to
prepare for a pure and holy heaven. . . ." -Ibid.. p. 102.

Lesson 2 Sabbath, October 13, 1979

KNOWN AND READ OF ALL MEN

Men may dispute what we say but they cannot dispute what we are, so it is im-
perative that our faith be seen in our outward actions

KEY TEXT: "Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:
Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ
ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living
God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart." 2 Corin-
thians 3:2, 3.
Recognizable as Children of God D Sunday
October 7
1. What is expected of Christians in this world? 1 Corinthians 4:9 (last part); 2
Corinthians 3:2, 3.

"The power of a higher, purer, nobler life is our great need. The world is wat-
ching to see what fruit is borne by professed Christians. It has a right to look for self-
denial and self-sacrifice from those who believe advanced truth. It is watching, ready
to criticize with keenness and severity our words and acts. Everyone who acts a part
in the work of God is weighed in the scales of human discernment. Impressions
favorable or unfavorable to Bible religion are constantly being made on the minds of
all with whom we have to do." -Counsels to Parents. Teachers, and Students, p. 324.
2. What is revealed by the clothes worn and the manner of dress? What may be
known by an inclination toward worldly fashion? 1 John 2:15, 16.

"A person's character is judged by his style of dress. A refined taste, a cultivated
mind, will be revealed in the choice of simple and appropriate attire. "-Education, p. 248.
". . . There are few who understand their own hearts. The vain and trifling
lovers of fashion may claim to be followers of Christ; but their dress and conversation
show what occupies the mind and engages the affections. Their lives betray their
friendship for the world, and it claims them as its own." -Messages to Young People. p. 355.
Dress as an Indicator D Monday
October 8
3. What does the Bible teach concerning the dress? What should be the guiding
principle in this matter? 1 Timothy 2:9, 10.

"The Bible teaches modesty in dress. 'In like manner also, that women adorn
themselves in modest apparel.' 1 Tim. 2:9. This forbids display in dress, gaudy col-
ors, profuse ornamentation. Any device designed to attract attention to the wearer or
to excite admiration is excluded from the modest apparel which God's word
enjoins." -Messages to Young People. p. 351.
". . . In their dress they avoid superfluity and display; but their clothing will be
neat, not gaudy, modest, and arranged upon the person with order and taste. Especial

-8-
care will be taken to dress in a manner that will show a sacred regard for the holy Sab-
bath and the worship of God." -Ibid.. p. 349.
4. How does the Lord regard His people, if they dress according to the customs
of the world? Isaiah 3:16-23.

"Young and old, God is now testing you. You are deciding your own eternal
destiny. Your pride, your love to follow the fashions of the world, your vain and emp-
ty conversation, your selfishness, are all put in the scale, and the weight of evil is fear-
fully against you...- Testimonies. vol. 1. pp. 189, 190.
"The prophecy of Isaiah 3 was presented before me as applying to these last
days, and the reproofs are given to the daughters of Zion who have thought only of ap-
pearance and display." -Ibid.. p. 270.

The Real Adornment D Tuesday

October 9
5. What does the Lord say concerning the wearing of rings or ornaments for the
person or the dress? What is revealed by those who wear other little or-
naments that are not of gold? 1 Peter 3:1-5.

". . . the wearing of the ring would be no evidence that we were true. I feel
deeply over this leavening process which seems to be going on among us, in the con-
formity to custom and fashion. Not one penny should be spent for a circlet of gold to
testify that we are married. In countries where the custom is imperative, we have no
burden to condemn those who have their marriage ring; let them wear it if they can do
so conscientiously; but let not our missionaries feel that the wearing of the ring will in-
crease their influence one jot or tittle. . . ."- Testimonies to Ministers. p. 181.
". . . Let those who have had experience see to it that they do not lead others
astray on this point by their example. That ring encircling your finger may be very
plain, but it is useless, and the wearing of it has a wrong influence upon
others."- Testimonies. vol. 4, p. 630.
"I was shown that the people of God should not imitate the fashions of the world.
Some have done this, and are fast losing the peculiar, holy character which should
distinguish them as God's people. I was pointed back to God's ancient people, and
was led to compare their apparel with the mode of dress in these last days. What a dif-
ference! what a change! Then the women were not so bold as now. When they went in
public, they covered their faces with a veil. In these last days, fashions are shameful
and immodest. They are noticed in prophecy. They were first brought in by a class
over whom Satan has entire control, who 'being past feeling [without any conviction
of the Spirit of God] have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all
uncleanness with greediness.' If God's professed people had not greatly departed
from Him, there would not be a marked difference between their dress and that of the
world. The small bonnets, exposing the face and head, show a lack of modesty. The
hoops are a shame. The inhabitants of earth are growing more and more corrupt, and
the line of distinction between them and the Israel of God must be more plain, or the
curse which falls upon worldlings will fall on God's professed people." -Ibid.. vol. 1, pp.
188, 189 (parenthesis by E. G. W.).

6. What should be the underlying motive of all believers as they study this part
of the Christian life? What does the Lord regard and what is very precious in
His sight? Revelation 3:15; 1 Peter 3:3,4.

-9-
". . . Dear friends, do not deceive yourselves concerning your condition. You
cannot deceive God. Says the True Witness: 'I know thy works.' The third angel is
leading up a people, step by step, higher and higher. At every step they will be
tested."- Testimonies. vol. 1, p. 190.
"It is not your dress that makes you of value in the Lord's sight. It is the inward
adorning, the graces of the Spirit, the kind word, the thoughtful consideration for
others, that God values. Do without the unnecessary trimmings, and lay aside for the
advancement of the cause of God the means thus saved. "-Messages to Young People. p. 314.

Neatness and Cleanliness o Wednesday

October 10

7. Against what opposite extremes in matters of dress are believers warned?

How may the very poorest comply with the purpose of God?

". . . Look upon the class of professed Christians described, who are careless in
their dress and person; loose in their business transactions, as their dress represents;
coarse, uncourteous, and rough in their manners; low in their conversation; at the
same time regarding these miserable traits as marks of true humility and Christian
life. . . ." -Messages to Young People. p. 349.

8. What does God expect from His children who are seeking sanctification?
What is revealed in those who do not pay attention to the will of God on this
point? Exodus 19:10, 11.

"Our dress should be cleanly. Uncleanliness in dress is unhealthful, and thus

defiling to the body and to the soul." -Messages to Young People. p. 352.
". . . The influence of believers would be tenfold greater if men and women
who accept the truth, who have been formerly careless and slack in their habits,
would be so elevated and sanctified through the truth as to observe habits of
neatness, order, and good taste in their dress. Our God is a God of order, and He is
not in any degree pleased with distraction, with filthiness, or with sin. "-Ibid.. pp.
349,350.
". . . But when we lose taste for order and neatness in dress, we virtually leave
the truth; for the truth never degrades, but elevates. When believers are neglectful of
their dress, and are coarse and rough in their manners, their influence hurts the
truth. . . ." -Ibid.. p. 353.

Seeking the Approbation of God o Thursday

October 11
9. What blessed influence does a Christian family have when it lives according
to the principles of God? 1 Peter 2:12.

". . . The Christian home is to be an object lesson, illustrating the excellence of

true principles of life. Such an illustration will be a power for good in the world. Far
more powerful than any sermon that can be preached is the influence of a true home
upon human hearts and lives. . . ." - The Ministry 0/ Healing, p. 352.

10. What is needed beyond the mere observance of external forms? What is to be
done? Titus 2:14.

-10-
"I was shown the necessity of opening the doors of our houses and hearts to
the Lord. When we begin to work in earnest for ourselves and for our families, then
we shall have help from God. I was shown that merely observing the Sabbath and
praying morning and evening are not positive evidences that we are Christians.
These outward forms may all be strictly observed, and yet true godliness be lack-
ing. . . . "-Testimonies. vol. 1, p. 305.

11. How seriously should we search out such defects in our own characters?
2 Corinthians 13:5.

"We should not try to lessen our guilt by excusing sin. We must accept God's
estimate of sin, and that is heavy indeed." - Tholl/(hts From the MOllllt of Blessillf(, p. 116.

Lesson Recapitulation o Friday

October 12
a. How are we to be real witnesses for the Lord?

b. Enumerate some of the ways in which worldly fashion can show in our man·
ner of dress.

c. What is the fundamental difference between the ornamentation that take the
attention in the world and that which meets the approval of God?

d. What is expected of the poorest as well as the more well-to-do?

e. In order for the family and the individuals to have a godly influence, where
should we search for defects? 0

"Take heed lest by your example you place other souls in peril. It is a terrible
thing to lose your own soul, but to pursue a course which will cause the loss of
other souls is still more terrible. That our influence should result in being a savor of
death unto death is a terrible thought, and yet it is possible. With what holy
jealousy, then should we keep guard over our thoughts, our words, our habits,
our dispositions, and our characters. God requires more deep, personal holiness
on our part. Only by revealing His character can we co-operate with Him in the
work of saving souls." -Counsels on Health, p. 559.

Lesson 3 Sabbath, October 20,1979

COUNSELS FOR CHURCH MEMBERS

Jesus calls men as they are and expects them to look to Him and not to others
that their own faults may be overcome through His power

KEY TEXT: "Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that
man is peace." Psalm 37:37.

A New Experience Sunday o

October 14
1. To what did the apostle Paul call the attention of the believers? How should
they serve the Lord? Colossians 3:8-10; 1 John 2:6.

"Pure religion is an imitation of Christ. A religion that is built on self-confidence

and selfishness is worthless. The true Christian is a follower of Christ. This following
means walking in the light. The heart must be opened to receive the heavenly guest.
As long as the heart is closed against His entrance, there can be in it no abiding peace.
No sunshine can flood the chambers of the soul temple, breaking through the mist
and cloud." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments]. vol. 6. p. 110l.
2. What did the Lord tell His disciples to do that was quite a new experience for
them? John 13:34.

"After the descent of the Holy Spirit, when the disciples went forth to proclaim a
living Saviour, their one desire was the salvation of souls. They rejoiced in the
sweetness of communion with saints. They were tender, thoughtful, self-denying,
willing to make any sacrifice for the truth's sake. In their daily association with one
another, they revealed the love that Christ had enjoined upon them. By unselfish
words and deeds they strove to kindle this love in other hearts.
"Such a love the believers were ever to cherish. They were to go forward in will-
ing obedience to the new commandment. . "-The Acts of the Apostles. p. 547.
When the New Experience is Lost 0 Monday
October 15
3. Instead of godly love to one another, what is often witnessed among
believers? What faces those in whom the love of Christ does not abide? James
3:14-16.

"The love which should exist between church members frequently gives place to
criticism and censure; and these appear, even in the religious exercises, in reflections
and severe personal thrusts. Such things should not be countenanced by ministers,
elders, or people. . . ."- Testimonies. vol. 4, pp. 488, 489.
"The root of bitterness, envy, distrust, jealousy, and even hatred, which exists in
the hearts of some church members, is the work of Satan. Such elements have a
poisonous influence upon the church." -Ibid.
" Unless we daily cultivate the precious plant of love we are in danger of
becoming narrow, unsympathetic, bigoted, and critical, esteeming ourselves

-12-
righteous when we are far from being approved of God. Some are uncourteous,
abrupt, and harsh. They are like chestnut burs: they prick whenever touched. These
do incalculable harm by misrepresenting our loving Saviour."- Testimonies. vol. 5, p. 605.
4. How is the love of God or the lack of it manifested in the church? What
should be the influence of the great forgiveness of God for us as individual
members? Matthew 7:3-5; 18:24-35.

". . . When one errs, others too often feel at liberty to make the case appear as
bad as possible. Those who perhaps are guilty of fully as great sins in some other
direction, will treat their brother with cruel severity. Errors committed through ig-
norance, thoughtlessness, or weakness are exaggerated into willful, premeditated
sin. . . ."- Testimonies. vol. 5, p. 605.
Gossip, Talebearing, Slander o Tuesday
October 16
5. What divine counsel will save the church from one of the greatest dangers
arising from within her ranks? Jeremiah 4:14.

"It is not the opposition of the world that most endangers the church of Christ. It
is the evil cherished in the hearts of believers that works their most grievous disaster
and most surely retards the progress of God's cause. There is no surer way of
weakening spirituality than by cherishing envy, suspicion, faultfinding, and evil sur-
mising. . . ."- The Acts 0/ the Apostles. p. 549.
6. Beside weakening the spiritual life of the individual, what else does slander
and gossip cause in the church? What does the word of God say should be
done to stop these evils? Proverbs 26:20,22; Psalm 15:1-3.

"An earnest effort should be made in every church to put away evilspeaking and
a censorious spirit as among the sins productive of the greatest evils in the church.
Severity and faultfinding must be rebuked as the workings of Satan. Mutual love and
confidence must be encouraged and strengthened in the members of the church. Let
all, in the fear of God and with love to their brethren, close their ears to gossip and
censure. Direct the talebearer to the teachings of God's word. Bid him obey the Scrip-
tures and carry his complaints directly to those whom he thinks in error. This united
action would bring a flood of light into the church and close the door to a flood of
evil. . . ."- Testimonies. vol. 5, pp. 609, 610.
7. How do we know that the slanderer will have no place in heaven? How may
this defect of character be overcome? Psalm 15:1-3.

". . . Here the backbiter is excluded from abiding in the tabernacle of God and
dwelling in the holy hill of Zion. He that taketh up a reproach against his neighbor
cannot receive the approval of God."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 615.
Look First to One's Own Faults 0 Wednesday
October 17
8. What defect of character does Satan know how to use to his advantage? How
does the Spirit of Prophecy classify those who are not looking to themselves,
but rather to others?

"I saw that some are withering spiritually. They have lived some time watching
to keep their brethren straight-watching for every fault to make trouble with them.
And while doing this, their minds are not on God, nor on heaven, nor on the truth; but
just where Satan wants them-on someone else. Their souls are neglected; they

-13-
seldom see or feel their own faults, for they have had enough to do to watch the faults
of others without so much as looking to their own souls or searching their own hearts.
A person's dress, bonnet, or apron takes their attention. They must talk to this one or
that one, and it is sufficient to dwell upon for weeks. . . ." - Testimonies. vol. 1, p. 145.
". . . There has ever been a class professing godliness, who, instead of follow-
ing on to know the truth, make it their religion to seek some fault of character or error
of faith in those with whom they do not agree. Such are Satan's right-hand helpers.
Accusers of the brethren are not few, and they are always active. . . ." - The Greot Con-
troversy. p. 519.
9. What results from trying to find defects in others? Proverbs 23:7 (first part).

"The very act of looking for evil in others develops evil in those who look. By
dwelling upon the faults of others, we are changed into the same image."- The Ministry
of Healin/!, p. 492.

Say Well or Say Nothing o Thursday

October 18
10. What example did our Saviour give concerning the faults of others? Isaiah
42:19,20.

"[Isa. 49:19 (first part) quoted.] God does not wish us to hear all that is to be
heard, or to see all that is to be seen. It is a great blessing to close the ears, that we
hear not, and the eyes, that we see not. The greatest anxiety should be to have clear
eyesight to discern our own shortcomings, and a quick ear to catch all needed reproof
and instruction, lest by our inattention and carelessness we let them slip and become
forgetful hearers and not doers of the work."- Testimonies, vol. 1, pp. 707, 708.
". . . I saw that all the religion a few poor souls have consists in watching the
garments and acts of others, and finding fault with them. Unless they reform, there
will be no place in heaven for them, for they would find fault with the Lord
Himself." -Ibid., p. 145.
11. Instead of dwelling on the faults of others, what should we do? What is never
wise? Psalm 37:37; 2 Corinthians 10:12.

"Cultivate the habit of speaking well of others. Dwell upon the good qualities of
those with whom you associate, and see as little as possible of their errors and fail-
ings. When tempted to complain of what someone has said or done, praise something
in that person's life or character. . . ." -The Ministry of Healing, p. 492.

Lesson 4 Sabbath, October 27, 1979

WARNING OF TWO DANGERS

The uncontrolled tongue is a great danger in many ways; another danger is the
permitting of extremism or fanaticism to guide or control in any way

KEY TEXT: "For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the
same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body." James 3:2.

The Importance of Care in Speech D Sunday

October 21
1. What instruction was given by the apostle Paul concerning our words? How is
the Christian life influenced by the conversation? Ephesians 4:29; James 3:2.

"Not one word is to be spoken unadvisedly. No evil speaking, no frivolous talk,

no fretful repining or impure suggestion, will escape the lips of him who is following
Christ. The apostle Paul, writing by the Holy Spirit, says, 'Let no corrupt com-
munication proceed out of your mouth.' Eph. 4:29. A corrupt communication does not
mean only words that are vile. It means any expression contrary to holy principles
and pure and undefiled religion. . . ." -Christ's Object Lessons. p. 337.
2. What instruction did Jesus give concerning our words? Matthew 12:34-37.

"The tenor of the conversation reveals the treasure of the heart. The cheap, com-
mon talk, the words of flattery, the foolish witticism, spoken to create a laugh, are the
merchandise of Satan, and all who indulge in this talk are trading in his goods. Im-
pressions are made upon those who hear these things similar to that made upon
Herod when the daughter of Herodias danced before him. All these transactions are
recorded in the books of heaven; and at the last great day they will appear in their true
light before the guilty ones. Then all will discern in them the alluring, deceptive work-
ings of the devil, to lead them into the broad road and the wide gate that opens to their
ruin." - Testimonies to Ministers. pp. 84, 85.

Speak Only the Simple Truth D Monday

October 22
3. What simplicity should mark the speech of the true Christian? Who only will
stand on the sea of glass? Matthew 5:37; RevelationI4:1, 5; 15:2.

". . . In the light of these scriptures [Col. 4:6; Eph. 4:29] the words of Christ
upon the mount are seen to condemn jesting, trifling, and unchaste conversation.
They require that our words should be not only truthful, but pure.
"Those who have learned of Christ will 'have no fellowship with the unfruitful
works of darkness.' Ephesians 5:11. In speech, as in life, they will be simple,
straightforward, and true; for they are preparing for the fellowship of those holy ones
in whose mouth 'was found no guile.' Revelation 14:5." -Thoughts From the Moullt of Bless-
ing. p. 69.
4. What is the effect of the manner of speaking? Why cannot heaven approve of
words spoken in a cutting way? Proverbs 12:17-19.

-15-
"My brethren, walk firmly, decidedly, your feet shod with the preparation of the
gospel of peace. You may be sure that pure and undefiled religion is not a sensational
religion." -Gospel Workers, p. 305.
"Their [the preachers'] words should never cut. They should present the truth in
humility, with the deepest love for souls and an earnest desire for their salvation, and
let the truth cut."- Testimonies. vol. 3. p. 218.
". . . It is our work to speak the truth in love and not to mix in with the truth the
unsanctified elements of the natural heart and speak things that savor of the same
spirit possessed by our enemies. All sharp thrusts will come back upon us in double
measure when the power is in the hands of those who can exercise it for
injury. . . . " -Ibid.. vol. 9. p. 241.
Shun Hypocrisy D Tuesday
October 23
5. What duty is enjoined on every Christian concerning both actions and
words? Titus 2:7,8.

" . . . 0, that we might control our words and actions! How strong we would
become if our words were of such an order that we would not be ashamed to meet the
record of them in the day of judgment. How different will they appear in the day of
God from what they seem when we utter them." -Review and Herald. February 27, 1913.
"Upon every family, upon every individual Christian, is laid the duty of barring
the way against corrupt speech. When in the company of those who indulge in foolish
talk, it is our duty to change the subject of conversation if possible. By the help of the
grace of God we should quietly drop words or introduce a subject that will turn the
conversation into a profitable channel." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 337.
6. Against what sin often seen in the very religious, did Christ warn His
followers? How does this lead to the substitution of human traditions for
true worship? Luke 12:1.

"The hypocrisy of the Pharisees was the product of self-seeking. The glorifica-
tion of themselves was the object of their lives. It was this that led them to pervert
and misapply the Scriptures, . . ." - The Desire of Ages. p. 409.
". . . It is the love of self, the desire for an easier way than God has appointed
that leads to the substitution of human theories and traditions for the divine precepts.
To His own disciples the warning words of Christ are spoken, 'Take heed and beware
of the leaven of the Pharisees.' "-Ibid.
Beware ofFanaticism and Extremism D Wednesday
October 24
7. What is the result of fanaticism and what often identifies its presence?
Romans 16:17, 18.

"In every age Satan has sought to impair the efforts of God's servants by in-
troducing into the church a spirit of fanaticism. Thus it was in Paul's day, and thus it
was in later centuries during the time of the Reformation. Wycliffe, Luther, and many
others who blessed the world by their influence and their faith, encountered the wiles
by which the enemy seeks to lead into fanaticism overzealous, unbalanced, and un-
sanctified minds. . . ." - The Acts of the Apostles. p. 348.

-16-
8. What has been a problem in every time of reformation? What characterizes
fanaticism and how does this contrast with the divine order? 2 Timothy 4:3, 4.

". . . Luther also suffered great perplexity and distress from the course of
fanatical persons who claimed that God had spoken directly through them, and who
therefore set their own ideas and opinions above the testimony of the
Scriptures." - The Great Controversy. p. 396.
"God is leading out a people, not a few separate individuals here and there, one
believing this thing, another that. Angels of God are doing the work committed to
their trust. The third angel is leading out and purifying a people, and they should
move with him unitedly. Some run ahead of the angels that are leading this people;
but they have to retrace every step, and meekly follow no faster than the angels
lead. . . . But some restless spirits do not more than half do up their work. As the
angel leads them, they get in haste for something new, and rush on without divine
guidance, and thus bring confusion and discord into the ranks. They do not speak or
act in harmony with the body. . . . "-Testimonies. vol. 1, p. 207.
Beware ofDivisions not Founded on Principle o Thursday
October 25
9. What instruction is given concerning those who quibble over trivial matters,
and cause divisions? What further information is given by the Spirit of Pro-
phecy on this same point and what is revealed of the thinking' of this kind of
people? 2 Thessalonians 3:6.

"Whenever the message of truth comes home to souls with special power, Satan
stirs up his agents to start a dispute over some minor question. Thus he seeks to at-
tract attention from the real issue. Whenever a good work is begun, there are cavilers
ready to enter into dispute over forms or technicalities, to draw minds away from the
living realities. When it appears that God is about to work in a special manner for His
people, let them not be enticed into a controversy that will work only ruin of
souls. . . ."- The Desire 0/ Ages. p. 396.
". . . The enemy has been seeking your destruction, and endeavoring to in-
fluence others through you. I saw that you both take an exalted position that God has
never assigned you, and that you both consider yourselves far in advance of the peo-
ple of God. I saw you looking to Battle Creek with jealousy and suspicion. You would
place your hands in there, and mold their acts and doings to what you consider would
be right. You are noticing little things that you do not understand, that you have not
the least to do with, and that in no way concern you. . . ."-Testimonies. vol. 1, p. 204.
" . . . You have an appearance of humility, and this has influence with others,
and leads them to think that you are far advanced in the Christian life; but when your
peculiar notions are touched, self rises at once, and you manifest a willful, stubborn
spirit. This is a sure evidence that you do not possess true humility." -Ibid.
"A fanatical spirit is with you, that you take to be God's Spirit. You are
deceived." -Ibid" p. 208.
10. Of what should the servants of God beware? What is a safeguard against
this? 1 Timothy 6:11, 12; 2 Timothy 2:14, 15.

"I saw the necessity of the messengers, especially, watching and checking all
fanaticism wherever they might see it rise. Satan is pressing in on every side, and unless
we watch for him, and have our eyes open to his devices and snares, and have on the
whole armor of God, the fiery darts of the wicked will hit us. . . ."-Early Writings, p. 63.

-17-
"Let not human reasoning be placed where sanctifying truth should be." -Gospel
Workers, p. 308.
"Let us go to the word of God for guidance. Let us seek for a 'Thus saith the
Lord.' We have had enough of human methods."-Ibid.. p. 310.

11. Who alone can distinguish the truth in its purity? Romans 12:2; Psalm
119:18.

"Only the mind and heart cleansed by the sanctification of the Spirit can discern
heavenly things." -Gospel Workers, p. 310.
Lesson Recapitulation o Friday
October 26
a. What are some of the effects of uncontrolled speech?
b. What should be the marked contrast between the speech of the Christian and
the worldly people?
c. As believers seek to be children of God, of what danger must they beware?
d. What problem has been faced by reformers and how has this resulted in the
many denominations and sects?
e. What is first necessary in order to be able to distinguish truth from error? 0

"The great day of the execution of God's judgment seemed to have come.
Ten thousand times ten thousand were assembled before a large throne, upon
which was seated a person of majestic appearance. Several books were before
Him, and upon the covers of each was written in letters of gold, which seemed
like a burning flame of fire: 'ledger of Heaven.' One of these books, containing
the names of those who claim to believe the truth, was then opened. Immediately
I lost sight of the countless millions about the throne, and only those who were
professedly children of the light and of the truth engaged my attention. As these
persons were named, one by one, and their good deeds mentioned, their
countenances would light up with a holy joy that was reflected in every direction.
But this did not seem to rest upon my mind with the greatest force.
"Another book was opened, wherein were recorded the sins of those who
profess the truth. Under the general heading of selfishness came every other sin.
There were also headings over every column, and underneath these, opposite
each name, were recorded, in their respective columns, the lesser sins.
"Under covetousness came falsehood, theft, robbery, fraud, and avarice;
under ambition came pride and extravagance; jealousy stood at the head of
malice, envy, and hatred; and intemperance headed a long list of fearful crimes,
such as lasciviousness, adultery, indulgence of animal passions, etc. As I beheld I
was filled with inexpressible anguish and exclaimed: 'Who can be saved? who
will stand justified before God? whose robes are spotless? who are faultless in the
sight of a pure and holy God?'
"As the Holy One upon the throne slowly turned the leaves of the ledger, and
His eyes rested for a moment upon individuals, His glance seemed to burn into
'their very souls, and at the same moment every word and action of their lives
passed before their minds as clearly as though traced before their vision in letters
of fire. Trembling seized them, and their faces turned pale. . . . "-Testimonies, vol.
4, pp. 384, 385.

HEWARE: PRIDE,
PRESUMPTION, AND JEALOUSY
Pride, presumption, envy and jealousy are dangerous because they can lead to
rebellion which is as the sin of witchcraft, a capital crime in the Old Testament

KEY TEXT: "For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil
work." James 3:16.

Pride Leads to Destruction o Sunday

October 28
1. What has the Lord revealed concerning pride and where it leads? To avoid
this sin, what should be kept in mind? Proverbs 8:13; 16:18; Malachi 4:1.

"There is no pride so dangerous as spiritual pride." - Testimonies to Ministers. p. 109.

" . . . Spiritual pride eats out the vitals of religion. In order to preserve humility,
it would be well to remember how we appear in the sight of a holy God, who reads
every secret of the soul, and how we should appear in the sight of our fellow men if
they all knew us as well as God knows us. For this reason, to humble us, we are
directed to confess our faults, and improve this opportunity to subdue our
pride."- Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 211.
"I saw that God hates pride, and that all the proud and all that do wickedly shall
be stubble, and the day that cometh shall burn them up. I saw that the third angel's
message must yet work like leaven upon many hearts that profess to believe it, and
purge away their pride, selfishness, covetousness, and love of the world."-lbid., vol. I,
pp. 132, 133.

2. Where was pride first manifested? Who was the first to act presumptuously?
Ezekiel 28:17; Isaiah 14:13, 14.

"There can be no presumption more fatal than that which leads men to venture
upon a course of self-pleasing."- Testimonies to Ministers, p. 103.
"He [Satan] will try every device, and if the subjects of these temptations do not
seek God, they will be blinded to his deceptions, and will be self-confident, self-
sufficient, and in ignorance of their condition and danger." -Messages to Young People, p. 86.
The Great Danger in Presumption o Monday
October 29
3. What may we learn from David's prayer concerning presumption? Psalm
19:13.

"Often when Satan has failed of exciting distrust, he succeeds in leading us to

presumption. If he can cause us to place ourselves unnecessarily in the way of tempta-
tion he knows that the victory is his, God will preserve all who walk in the path of obe-
dience; but to depart from it is to venture on Satan's ground. There we are sure to
fall. . . ."- The Desire 0/ Ages, p. 126.

-19-
4. What was the cause of king Saul's disobedience? 1 Samuel 15:17-19, 22, 30.

". . . Saul presumed upon his exaltation, and dishonored God by unbelief and
disobedience. Though when first called to the throne he was humble and self-
distrustful, success made him self-confident. The very first victory of his reign had
kindled that pride of heart which was his greatest danger. . . . The people honored
their king, forgetting that he was but the agent by whom God had wrought; and
though at first Saul ascribed the glory to God, he afterward took honor to
himself. . . . Thus the way was prepared for his sin of presumption and sacrilege at
Gilgal. The same blind self-confidence led him to reject Samuel's reproof. . . ." -Patriarchs
and Prophets, p. 633.

Solomon's Downfall o Tuesday

October 30
5. When Solomon became king, what trait of character enabled him to receive
the gift of great wisdom? What was his undoing? 1 Kings 3:7; 11:6.

"By earnest prayer and dependence upon God, Solomon obtained the wisdom
which excited the wonder and admiration of the world. But when he turned from the
Source of his strength, and went forward relying upon himself, he fell a prey to temp-
tation. . . ."- The Great Controversy, p. 509.

6. What is recorded by Solomon and James concerning envy? What should we

understand concerning this evil trait of character? Proverbs 27:4; James
3:16.

Envy is one of the most satanic traits that can exist in the human heart,
and it is one of the most baleful in its effects. Says the wise man, 'Wrath is cruel, and
anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?' Proverbs 27:4. It was envy
that first caused discord in heaven, and its indulgence has wrought untold evil among
men. 'Where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.' James
3:16." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 385.

Jealousy Abhorrent to God o Wednesday

October 31
7. To what temptation did Moses' sister yield and how was the displeasure of
God publicly demonstrated? Numbers 12:1,2,9, 10.

"God had chosen Moses, and had put His Spirit upon him; and Miriam and
Aaron, by their murmurings, were guilty of disloyalty, not only to their appointed
leader, but to God Himself. . . .The cloud disappeared from the tabernacle in token
of God's displeasure, and Miriam was smitten. . . .
"This manifestation of the Lord's displeasure was designed to be a warning to all
Israel, to check the growing spirit of discontent and insubordination. If Miriam's envy
and dissatisfaction had not been signally rebuked, it would have resulted in great
evil. . . ." -Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 384, 385.

8. What led up to the jealousy of Miriam and Aaron against their brother who
had been called of God? Numbers 12:2.

-20-
"In the appointment of the seventy elders Miriam and Aaron had not been con-
sulted, and their jealousy was excited against Moses. At the time of Jethro's visit,
while the Israelites were on the way to Sinai, the ready acceptance by Moses of the
counsel of his father-in-law had aroused in Aaron and Miriam a fear that his influence
with the great leader exceeded theirs. In the organization of the council of elders they
felt that their position and authority had been ignored. . . ." -Patriarchs and Prophets. pp.
382, 383.
". . . The judgment visited upon Miriam should be a rebuke to all who yield to
jealousy, and murmur against those upon whom God lays the burden of His
work."-Ibid.. p. 386.

Other Manifestations of the Sin ofJealousy D Thursday

November 1
9. What steps led to the rebellion of Korah, Dathan and Abiram? What warning
is in this experience? Numbers 16:1-3.

"Jealousy had given rise to envy, and envy to rebellion." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p.
397.

10. What purpose did the Lord have in sending David to the court of king Saul?
What did Satan use in his effort to thwart the plan of God? 1 Samuel
16:12, 13; 18:9-11.

"It was the providence of God that had connected David with Saul. David's posi-
tion at court would give him a knowledge of affairs, in preparation for his future
greatness. It would enable him to gain the confidence of the nation. The vicissitudes
and hardships which befell him, through the enmity of Saul, would lead him to feel his
dependence upon God, and to put his whole trust in Him. .. . ." -Patriarchs and Prophets.
p.649.
"Saul opened his heart to the spirit of jealousy by which his soul was
poisoned." -Ibid.. p. 650.

Lesson 6 Sabbath, November 10, 1979

THE OUTWORKING OF TRUE LOVE

True brotherly love will lead every believer to consider the welfare of his brother
above his own interests and will deal faithfully at all times
KEY TEXT: "Open rebuke is better than secret love. Faithful are the wounds of a
friend; but the kisses of any enemy are deceitful." Proverbs 27:5, 6.
The True Character Reflects the Sowing 0 Sunday
November 4
1. Contrary to what the world thinks, what is great gain to the Christian?
1 Timothy 6:6.

"If Christ is not in the heart, the character will be unlovely."-Testimonies. vol. 3, p.
81.
2. What should be kept in mind when an evil trait of character becomes ap-
parent? How only can this be changed? Galatians 6:7,8; John 14:14.

" 'Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.' What seed are we scatter-
ing? What will be our harvest for time and for eternity? To every man the Master has
assigned his work in accordance with his ability. Are we sowing the seed of truth and
righteousness, or that of unbelief, disaffection, evil surmising, and love of the world?
The one who scatters evil seed may discern the nature of his work, and repent and be
forgiven. . . ."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 429.
True Lovefor Our Neighbor o Monday
November 5
3. Of what Christian duty does the apostle Paul remind us in his letter to the
Galatians? Galatians 6:2.

". . . Often it requires a vast amount of time and labor to win one soul to Christ.
And when a soul turns from sin to righteousness, there is joy in the presence of the
angels. Think you that the ministering spirits who watch over these souls are pleased
to see how indifferently they are treated by some who claim to be Christians? Should
Jesus deal with us as we too often deal with one another, who of us could be
saved?"- The Ministry of Healing, p. 494.
4. When the priest and the Levite passed by without helping the injured
man, what was really lacking in their hearts? How may this lack be seen in
us? Luke 10:30-32.

"But there has been among us as a people a lack of deep, earnest, soul-touching
sympathy and love for the tempted and the erring. Many have manifested great cold-
ness and sinful neglect, represented by Christ as passing by on the other side, keep-
ing as far as possible from those who most need help. The newly converted soul often
has fierce conflicts with established habits or with some special form of temptation,
and, being overcome by some master passion or tendency, he is guilty of indiscretion
or actual wrong. It is then that energy, tact, and wisdom are required of his brethren,

-22-
that he may be restored to spiritual health. In such cases the instructions of God's
word apply: 'Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore
such an one in a spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.'
'We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please
ourselves.' But how little of the pitying tenderness of Christ is manifested by His pro-
fessed followers!" - Testimonies. vol. 5. pp. 604, 605.
True Sympathy for Others o Tuesday
November 6
5. What conditions must be fulfilled in order to be able to receive the blessings
of God? What danger exists when this call is not answered? Isaiah 58:6-8;
Romans 15:1,2.

" 'We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to
please ourselves.' Rom. 15:1. No soul who believes in Christ, though his faith may be
weak, and his steps wavering as those of a little child, is to be lightly esteemed. By all
that has given us advantage over another,-be it education and refinement, nobility of
character, Christian training, religious experience,-we are in debt to those less
favored; and, so far as lies in our power, we are to minister unto them. If we are
strong, we are to stay up the hands of the weak. . . ." - The Desire of Ages, p. 440.
"God calls upon His people to arise and come out of the chilling, frosty at-
mosphere in which they have been living, to shake off the impressions and ideas that
have frozen up the impulses of love and held them in selfish inactivity. He bids them
come up from their low, earthly level and breathe in the clear, sunny atmosphere of
heaven."-Testimonies. vol. 5. p. 607.
6. What did the Lord reveal concerning Sardis? What will be the result if a
similar spirit is found in us? Revelation 3: 1.

"The admonition of the True Witness to the Sardis church is: 'Thou hast a name
that thou livest, and art dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain,
that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. Remember
therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent.' The sin
especially charged against this church is that they have not strengthened the things
that remain, that are ready to die. Does this warning apply to us? Let us individually
examine our hearts in the light of God's word, and let our first work be to set our
hearts in order by the help of Christ." - Testimonies. vol. 5, p. 610.
"When you indulge your own harshness of character by manifesting a hard,
unfeeling spirit you are repulsing the very ones whom you should win. Your harsh-
ness destroys their love of assembling together and too often results in driving them
from the truth. . . ." -Ibid.. p. 608.
First Love Includes True Fellowship 0 Wednesday
November 7
7. What will the Lord consider in the day of judgment? What should be always
in mind in order to be prepared for this? Matthew 25:35, 36, 40, 42, 43, 45.

"Your faith must be something more than it has been, or you will be weighed in
the balances and found wanting. At the last day the final decision by the Judge of all
the earth will turn upon our interest in, and practical labor for, the needy, the oppress-
ed, the tempted. You cannot always pass these by on the other side and yourselves
find entrance as redeemed sinners into the city of God. 'Inasmuch,' says Christ, 'as ye
did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to Me.' "- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 612.

-23-
8. What counsel given by the Lord should be taken to heart by every believer at
all times? Revelation 2:4,5.

"It is not yet too late to redeem the neglects of the past. Let there be a revival of
the first love, the first ardor. Search out the ones you have driven away, bind up by
confession the wounds you have made. Come close to the great Heart of pitying love,
and let the current of that divine compassion flow into your heart and from you to the
hearts of others. Let the tenderness and mercy that Jesus has revealed in His own
precious life be an example to us of the manner in which we should treat our fellow
beings, especially those who are our brethren in Christ. ." - Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 612.
Beware ofFalse Sympathy o Thursday
November 8

9. When the two sons of Aaron were destroyed for disobedience, what were he
and his other sons forbidden to do? What was the basic cause of this disobe-
dience and why was any sign that could be interpreted as sympathy also for-
bidden? Leviticus 10:1, 2, 4, 6.

". . . Aaron was silent. The death of his sons, cut down without warning, in so
terrible a sin-a sin which he now saw to be the result of his own neglect of
duty-wrung the father's heart with anguish, but he gave his feelings no expression.
By no manifestation of grief must he seem to sympathize with sin. The congregation
must not be led to murmur against God." -Patrim'chs and Prophets, p. 361.
10. Why is it natural to have a false sympathy with the wrong-doer and what is
the effect of such sympathy? What is the Lord trying to teach us by this in-
struction to Aaron? What is promised to those who are faithful in parallel cir-
cumstances? Proverbs 27:5, 6.

". . . In almost every case where reproof is necessary, there will be some who
entirely overlook the fact that the Spirit of the Lord has been grieved and His cause
reproached. These will pity those who deserved reproof, because personal feelings
have been hurt. All this unsanctified sympathy places the sympathizers where they
are sharers in the guilt of the one reproved. In nine cases out of ten if the one reprov-
ed had been left under a sense of his wrongs, he might have been helped to see them
and thereby have been reformed. But meddlesome, unsanctified sympathizers place
altogether a wrong construction upon the motives of the reprover and the nature of
the reproof given, and by sympathizing with the one reproved lead him to feel that he
has been really abused; and his feelings rise up in rebellion against the one who has
only done his duty. Those who faithfully discharge their unpleasant duties under a
sense of their accountability to God will receive His blessing. ." - Testimonies, vol. 3,
p.359.
Lesson Recapitulation o Friday

Lesson 7 Sabbath, November 17,1979

GIVE GOD ALL THE GLORY

A warning that Satan wants man to take to himself credit, honor, glory or
anything that belongs to God or that would advance His cause

KEY TEXT: "Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the
hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and
earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters." Revelation 14:7.
Flattery, a Deceipt 0 Sunday
November 11
1. Of what special danger to the professed people of God did the apostle Paul
warn? Why is the cause of many difficulties and troubles not immediately
discerned? Hebrews 3:12, 13.

"Many have unsubdued, unhumbled hearts, and think more of their own little
grievances and trials than of the souls of sinners. If they had the glory of God in view,
they would feel for perishing souls around them; . . ." -Early Writings. p. 120.
"Many who profess the name of Christ and claim to be looking for His speedy
coming, know not what it is to suffer for Christ's sake. Their hearts are not subdued
by grace, and they are not dead to self, as is often shown in various ways. At the same
time they are talking of having trials. But the principle cause of their trials is an un-
subdued heart, which makes self so sensitive that it is often crossed. If such could
realize what it is to be a humble follower of Christ, a true Christian, they would begin
to work in good earnest and begin right. They would first die to self, then be instant in
prayer, and check every passion of the heart. . . ." -'-Ibid., p. 113.
2. How does Satan use praise and flattery of men and what are those who give
these? What endangered the life of David? Proverbs 26:28; 1 Samuel 18:7-9.

"We need to shun everything that would encourage pride and self-sufficiency;
therefore we should beware of giving or receiving flattery or praise. It is Satan's work
to flatter. He deals in flattery as well as in accusing and condemnation. Thus he seeks
to work the ruin of the soul. Those who give praise to men are used by Satan as his
agents. Let the workers for Christ direct every word of praise away from
themselves. . . ." -Christ's Objecl Lessons, pp. 161, 162.
"Those who give praise to men are used by Satan as his agents."-Ibid.
Exalt God Not Man 0 Monday
November 12
3. When seeking to encourage burden-bearers, what great caution should be
used? How can flattery and praise defeat God's purpose? 1 Corinthians
15:10; 3:21, 5-7.

"I have been shown that great caution should be used, even when it is necessary
to lift a burden of oppression from men and women, lest they lean to their own
wisdom and fail to make God their only dependence. It is not safe to speak in praise of

-25-
persons or to exalt the ability of a minister of Christ. In the day of God, very many will
be weighed in the balance and found wanting because of exaltation. I would warn my
brethren and sisters never to flatter persons because of their ability, for they cannot
bear it. Self is easily exalted, and, in consequence, persons lose their balance. I say
again to my brethren and sisters: If you would have your souls clean from the blood of
all men, never flatter, never praise the efforts of poor mortals; for it may prove their
ruin. . . ."- Testimonies. vol. 3, p. 185.
4. What love causes people to be extremely sensitive and easily offended?
Psalm 119:165.

"I saw that the Lord had given you light and experience, that you might see the sin-
fulness of a hasty spirit and control your passions. So surely as you fail to do this, just so
surely you will fail of everlasting life. You must overcome this disease of the imagina-
tion. You are extremely sensitive, and if a word is spoken favoring an opposite course
from that which you have been pursuing, you are hurt. ."- Testimonies. vol. 2. p. 424.
Faithfulness in the Smallest Things D Tuesday
November 13
5. What should characterize all our actions? Why is such care also required in
secular matters? Colossians 3:23; 1 Corinthians 4:2.

"It is the most abhorrent form of selfishness that leads the worker to neglect the
improvement of time, the care of property, because he is not directly under the eye of
the master. But do such workers imagine that their neglects are not noticed, their un-
faithfulness not recorded? Could their eyes be opened, they would see that a Watcher
looks on, and all their carelessness is recorded in the books of heaven." -Messages to
Young People, p. 228.
6. What is revealed by unfaithfulness in little things in the work of God? What
is revealed of by the Lord concerning His evaluation of unfaithfulness in
spiritual matters? Luke 16:10; Matthew 25:21.

". . . By unfaithfulness in even the smallest duties, man robs his Maker of the
service which is His due. This unfaithfulness reacts upon himself. He fails of gaining
the grace, the power, the force of character, which may be received through an
unreserved surrender to God. Living apart from Christ he is subject to Satan's temp-
tations, and he makes mistakes in his work for the Master. Because he is not guided
by right principles in little things, he fails to obey God in the great matters which he
regards as his special work. The defects cherished in dealing with life's minor details
pass into more important affairs. He acts on the principles to which he has accustom-
ed himself. . . ." -Christ's Object Lessons. p. 356.
"Those who are unfaithful to the work of God are lacking in principle; their
motives are not of a character to lead them to choose the right under all cir-
cumstances. The servants of God are to feel at all times that they are under the eye of
their employer. He who watched the sacrilegious feast of Belshazzar is present in all
our institutions, in the counting-room of the merchant, in the private workshop, and
the bloodless hand is as surely recording your neglect as it recorded the awful
judgment of the blasphemous king. Belshazzar's condemnation was written in words
of fire, 'Thou are weighed in the balances, and art found wanting'; and if you fail to
fulfill your God-given obligations your condemnation will be the same." -Messages to
Young People, p. 229.

-26-
Danger in Love ofMaterial Wealth 0 Wednesday
November 14
7. From what do all evils stem? How can this sin usually associated with the
wealthy be manifested in even the poorest? 1 Timothy 6:10, 11.

". . . Let each of those to whom are committed sacred trusts inquire: 'How do I
meet the inspecting eye of God? Is my heart cleansed from its defilement? or have its
temple courts become so desecrated, so occupied with buyers and sellers, that Christ
finds no room?' The bustle of business, if continuous, will dry up spirituality and leave
the soul Christless. . . ."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 423.
r. 8. What preceded the sin of Achan and what three of these steps did he admit? What
deeper lessons may we take from this well-known experience? Joshua 7:20,21.

"Covetousness is an evil of gradual development. Achan had cherished greed of

gain until it became a habit, binding him in fetters well-nigh impossible to break.
While fostering this evil, he would have been filled with horror at the thought of
bringing disaster upon Israel; but his perceptions were deadened by sin, and when
temptation came, he fell an easy prey." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 496.
Covetousness Leads to Other Sins 0 Thursday
November 15
9. What avenue does the enemy use in his efforts to hinder the progress of
God's work in the individual and also in the church life? Exodus 20:17;
Romans 7:7.

"I saw that Satan bade his angels lay their snares especially for those who were
looking for Christ's second appearing and keeping all the commandments of
God. . . . 'Make covetousness and love of earthly treasures the ruling traits of their
character. As long as these traits rule, salvation and grace stand back. Crowd every
attraction around them, and they will be surely ours. And not only are we sure of
them, but their hateful influence will not be exercised to lead others to heaven. When
any shall attempt to give, put within them a grudging disposition, that it may be spar-
ingly.' .
"I saw that Satan carries out his plans well. . . . He leads some in one way and
some in another, always taking advantage of evil traits in the brethren and sisters, ex-
citing and stirring up their natural besetments. If they are disposed to be selfish and
covetous, Satan takes his stand by their side, and with all his power seeks to lead
them to indulge their besetting sins. . . ." -Early Writings, pp. 266. 267.
10. What lesson is to be learned from the parable of the man who had so much he
decided to build bigger barns? Luke 12:15-21.
"For the sake of making money, many divorce themselves from God and ignore
their eternal interest. They pursue the same course as the scheming, worldly man,
but God is not in this; it is an offense to Him. He would have them prompt to devise
and execute plans; but all business matters should be transacted in harmony with the
great moral law of God. . . ."-Testimonies, vol. 5. p. 428.

Lesson 8 Sabbath, November 24, 1979

THE NECESSITY
OF SELF-EXAMINATION
In this time of probation all have opportunity to examine their own lives while
there is yet time to be prepared for the final judgment
KEY TEXT: "Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own
selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you,
except ye be reprobates?" 2 Corinthians 13:5.

The Dangers of Covetousness Emphasized D Sunday

November 18
1. With what other sin is covetousness equated? Who has led the way in this sin
and with what result? Colossians 3:5 (last part).

"Satan and his angels mark all the mean and covetous acts of these persons and
present them to Jesus and His holy angels, saying reproachfully, 'These are Christ's
followers! They are preparing to be translated!' Satan compares their course with
passages of Scripture in which it is plainly rebuked and then taunts the heavenly
angels, saying, 'These are following Christ and His word! These are the fruit of
Christ's sacrifice and redemption!' Angels turn in disgust from the scene. God re-
quires a constant doing on the part of His people; and when they become weary of
well-doing, He becomes weary of them. I saw that He is greatly displeased with the
least manifestation of selfishness on the part of His professed people, for whom Jesus
spared not His own precious life. Every selfish, covetous person will fall out by the
way. Like Judas, who sold his Lord, they will sell good principles and a noble,
generous disposition for a little of earth's gain. All such will be sifted out from God's
people. . . ." -Early Writings, pp. 268, 269.
2. How does the apostle Paul warn against any contamination with this sin that
he associates with immorality? Ephesians 5:3.

". . . Weare as directly forbidden to indulge covetousness as was Achan to ap-

propriate the spoils of Jericho. God has declared it to be idolatry. We are warned, 'Ye
cannot serve God and mammon.' Matthew 6:24. 'Take heed, and beware of
covetousness.' Luke 12:15. 'Let it not be once named among you.' Ephesians 5:3. We
have before us the fearful doom of Achan, of Judas, of Ananias and Sapphira. Back of
all these we have that of Lucifer, the 'son of the morning,' who, coveting a higher
state, forfeited forever the brightness and bliss of heaven. And yet, notwithstanding
all these warnings, covetousness abounds." -Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 496,497.
Consider the Influences on Our Eternal Destiny D Monday
November 19
3. What should all recognize when the presence of covetousness or selfishness
is seen in the character? What influence will the existence of these sins in the
members of the church have on any missionary work that is attempted?
Romans 6:16.

-28-
" 'To whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye
obey.' If we indulge anger, lust, covetousness, hatred, selfishness, or any other sin,
we become servants of sin." -Messages 10 Young People, p. 114.
". . . A holy God will not bring out souls to the truth to come under such an in-
fluence as has existed in the church. Our heavenly Father is too wise to bring souls in-
to the truth to be molded by the influence of these men who are unconsecrated in
heart and life. These men are not in harmony with the truth. They are not in union
with the body, but are drawing off from the church. They are working at cross pur-
poses with those whom God is using to bring souls into the truth." - Testimonies, vol. 4, p.
238.

4. What is the end result of cultivating or even tolerating the least vestiges of
such defects in the character? Why? Revelation 21:27.

". . . None can enter who are grown-up children, carrying with them the
disposition, the habits, and the characteristics which pertain to children. If you have
nurtured suspicions, criticism, temper, self-dignity, you can not be admitted; for you
would spoil the feast. All who go in through this door have on the wedding garment,
woven in the loom of heaven. . . ." -Review and Herald. April 11, 1899.

Prepare for the Judgment o Tuesday

November 20
5. If the professed children of God do not overcome their defects of character,
how will these appear in the day of judgment? What light have they been
given on this point? Revelation 20:11, 12.

". . . We shall be judged according to what we ought to have done, but did not
accomplish because we did not use our powers to glorify God. Even if we do not lose
our souls, we shall realize in eternity the result of our unused talents. For all the
knowledge and ability that we might have gained and did not, there will be an eternal
loss." -Messages to Young People, p. 309.
[With this question, also re-read the reference on p. 18 following Lesson 4.]

6. In view of this light, what special counsel is given the believers by the apostle
Peter? 1 Peter 5:6.

"All [those engaged in managing the great branches of God's work] have natural
traits which must be cultivated or repressed, as they shall help or hinder in obtaining
a growth in grace, a depth of religious experience." - Tesli11l0llies, vol. 5, p. 423.

Self-examination Now o Wednesday

November 21
7. What counsel did the apostle Paul give believers during the time of their pro-
bation? 2 Corinthians 13:5.

". . . The child of God must search out the sin which he has petted and indulged
himself in, and permit God to cut it out of his heart. He must overcome that one sin;
for it is not a trifling matter in the sight of God." -Messages 10 Young People, p. 91.

-29-
8. Why is it not easy for a person to really know himself? What danger exists in
the process of this self-examination? Jeremiah 17:9; 2 Corinthians 10:12.

". . . It is difficult for us to understand ourselves, to have a correct knowledge

of our own characters. The word of God is plain, but often there is an error in apply-
ing it to one's self. There is liability to self-deception and to think its warnings and
reproofs do not mean me. . . ."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 332.

According to God's Rule D Thursday

November 22
9. How should we understand the standard by which we are to search our
hearts? How should this be done? 2 Corinthians 10:13.

"The Bible is full, clear, and explicit; the character of the true disciple of Christ is
marked out with exactness. We must search the Scriptures with humble hearts,
trembling at the word of the Lord, if we would not be in any way deceived in regard to
our true character. There must be persevering effort to overcome selfishness and
self-confidence. Self-examination must be thorough, that there be no danger of self-
deception. A little catechizing of self on special occasions is not sufficient. Daily ex-
amine the foundation of your hope, and see whether you are indeed in the love of
Christ. Deal truly with your own hearts, for you cannot afford to run any risk here.
Count the cost of being a wholehearted Christian, and then gird on the armor. Study
the Pattern; look to Jesus, and be like Him. Your peace of mind, your hope of eternal
salvation, depend on faithfulness in this work. As Christians we are less thorough in
self-examination than in anything else; it is no wonder, then, that we make such slow
advancement in understanding self."- Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 332, 333.
"There is a necessity for close self-examination, and to closely investigate in the
light of God's word, Am I sound, or am I rotten, at heart?" -Messages to Young People, p. 83.
"Deal truly with your own souls. Search carefully."-Ibid., p. 84.

10. In view of the deceitfulness of the human heart, what help should be sought
in the examination? What should be the real purpose? Psalm 139:23, 24.

"We should not try to lessen our guilt by excusing sin. We must accept God's
estimate of sin, and that is heavy indeed."- Thoughts From the Mount 0/ Blessing, p. 116.

Lesson 9 Sabbath, December 1, 1979

CHARACTER TO BE TRANSFORMED
The character formed during life will determine the eternal destiny and there is a
divine provision of all power necessary to perfect it
KEY TEXT: "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the
sons of God, even to them that believe on his name." John 1:12.

Fitness for Heaven D Sunday

November 25
1. What is the divine evaluation of a man fit for heaven? What is the definition
of character in the Spirit of Prophecy? Psalm 15:1·5.

"True character is a quality of the soul, revealing itself in the conduct." -Child
Guidance, p. 16l.
2. How may we know and be sure that our character will qualify us for heaven?
What is revealed of such? 1 John 2:3-6; Revelation 14:1.

"A character formed according to the divine likeness is the only treasure that we
can take from this world to the next. Those who are under the instruction of Christ in
this world will take every divine attainment with them to the heavenly mansions. And
in heaven we are continually to improve. How important, then, is the development of
character in this life." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 332.
Divine Help D Monday
November 26
3. What did Jesus reveal concerning those who were satisfied with a superficial
work and who did not meet the divine requirement? Matthew 25:8-10.

". . . They [the class represented by the foolish virgins] do not know God. They
have not studied His character; they have not held communion with
Him; . . ." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 411.
". . . When startled from their lethargy, they discern their destitution, and en-
treat others to supply their lack; but in spiritual things no man can make up another's
deficiency. The grace of God has been freely offered to every soul. The message of
the gospel has been heralded, 'Let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let
him take the water of life freely.' Rev. 22:17. But character is not transferable. No
man can believe for another. No man can receive the Spirit for another. No man can
impart to another the character which is the fruit of the Spirit's working. . . ." -Ibid.,
pp. 411, 412.
"On Christ's coronation day He will not acknowledge as His any who bear spot or
wrinkle or any such thing. But to His faithful ones He will give crowns of immortal
glory." -Review and Herald, November 24, 1904.
4. What assurance is given that we are not left to our own efforts alone to
develop an acceptable character? What should we value more than money?
2 Peter 1:3,4; 2 Corinthians 6:1,2.

"Our time belongs to God." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 342.

-31-
". . . We have no time to waste, no time to devote to selfish pleasure, no time
for the indulgence of sin. It is now that we are to form characters for the future, im-
mortal life. It is now that we are to prepare for the searching judgment." -Ibid.
"There will be no future probation in which to prepare for eternity. It is in this
life that we are to put on the robe of Christ's righteousness. This is our only oppor-
tunity to form characters for the home which Christ has made ready for those who
obey His commandments."-Ibid., p. 319.
The Human Part 0 Tuesday
November 27
5. What makes it very clear that there is no change in character at or after
death? What makes it clear that they will not be changed at the coming of
Christ? Luke 16:26; Revelation 22:11, 12.

"It is a solemn thing to die, but a far more solemn thing to live. Every thought
and word and deed of our lives will meet us again. What we make of ourselves in pro-
bationary time, that we must remain to all eternity. Death brings dissolution to the
body, but makes no change in the character. The coming of Christ does not change
our characters; it only fixes them forever beyond all change."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 466.
6. What instruction from the Lord and His apostle makes it clear that there is
some effort to be made on the part of humanity? Luke 13:24; Philippians
2:12.

Christ has given us no assurance that to attain perfection of character is an

easy matter. A noble, all-round character is not inherited. It does not come to us by
accident. A noble character is earned by individual effort through the merits and
grace of Christ. God gives the talents, the powers of the mind; we form the character.
It is formed by hard, stern battles with self. Conflict after conflict must be waged
against hereditary tendencies. We shall have to criticize ourselves closely, and allow
not one unfavorable trait to remain uncorrected." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 331.
Divine-Human Co-operation 0 Wednesday
November 28
7. What principle should be well understood in the development of character?
What nature of things can spoil the effort? 1 John 5:4, 5; Song of Solomon
2:15.

"Character does not come by chance. It is not determined by one outburst of

temper, one step in the wrong direction. It is the repetition of the act that causes it to
become a habit, and molds the character either for good or for evil. Right characters
can be formed only by persevering, untiring effort, by improving every intrusted
talent and capability to the glory of God. . . ." -Messages to Young People, p. 163.
"Never underrate the importance of little things. Little things supply the actual
discipline of life. It is by them that the soul is trained that it may grow into the
likeness of Christ, or bear the likeness of evil." -Ibid., p. 202.
8. What should be remembered by any tempted to think that "This is the way
that I am, I cannot help it "? 1 Peter 1:13, 14.

"Let no one say, I cannot remedy my defects of character. If you come to this
decision, you will certainly fail of obtaining everlasting life. The impossibility lies in
your own will. If you will not, then you can not overcome. The real difficulty arises
from the corruption of an unsanctified heart, and an unwillingness to submit to the
control of God." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 331.

-32-
A Natural Order ofDevelopment o Thursday
November 29
9. Since the righteousness of Christ will not cloak any cherished sin, what is
needed by all who accept the message of justification by faith? John 1:12.

"When the sinner believes that Christ is his personal Saviour, then, according to
His unfailing promises, God pardons his sin, and justifies him freely. The repentant
soul realizes that his justification comes because Christ, as his substitute and surety,
has died for him, is his atonement and righteousness." -Review and Herald. November 4,
1890.

10. What is revealed by one in whom there is no development of character? Mark

4:26-28.

"The germination of the seed represents the beginning of spiritual life, and the
development of the plant is a figure of the development of character. There can be no
life without growth. The plant must either grow or die. As its growth is silent and im-
perceptible, but continuous, so is the growth of character. At every stage of develop-
ment our life may be perfect; yet if God's purpose for us is fulfilled, there will be con-
stant advancement." -Education, pp. 105, 106.

Lesson Recapitulation o Friday

November 30
a. What character is needed to enter the kingdom of God?

b. What is a great present need among believers?

c. What part is to be played by the believer himself?

d. What is often an obstacle to the formation of. an acceptable character?

e. What natural law illustrates the formation of character? o

"Dear young friends, that which you sow, you will also reap. Now is the sow-
ing time for you, What will the harvest be? What are you SOWing? Every word you
utter, every act you perform, is a seed which will bear good or evil fruit and will
result in joy or sorrow to the sower. As is the seed sown, so will be the crop. God
has given you great light and many privileges. After this light has been given,
after your dangers have been' plainly presented before you, the responsibility
becomes yours, The manner in which you treat the light that God gives you will
turn the scale for happiness or woe. You are shaping your destinies for
yourselves." -Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 363.

Lesson 10 Sabbath, December 8, 1979

HELPS FOR THE TRANSFORMATION

OF CHARACTER
The Lord has provided means whereby man may have help to develop a spiritual
character that is Christlike and the believer should use them to the utmost

KEY TEXT: "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life."
Proverbs 4:23.

Faith 0 Sunday
December 2
1. When explaining the steps to be taken in developing a Christian character, to
what did the apostle Peter say we should add? When we are told that Enoch
pleased God, what does the following verse tell about him? 2 Peter 1:5;
Hebrews 11:5,6.

". . . In the midst of a world by its iniquity doomed to destruction, Enoch lived a
life of such close communion with God that he was not permitted to fall under the
power of death. The godly character of this prophet represents the state of holiness
which must be attained by those who shall be 'redeemed from the earth' (Revelation
14:3) at the time of Christ's second advent. Then, as in the world before the Flood, in-
iquity will prevail. Following the promptings of their corrupt hearts and the teachings
of a deceptive philosophy, men will rebel against the authority of Heaven. But like
Enoch, God's people will seek for purity of heart and conformity to His will, until they
shall reflect the likeness of Christ. . . ." -Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 88, 89.
"Through faith in Christ, every deficiency of character may be supplied, every
defilement cleansed, every fault corrected, every excellence developed." -Education,p.
257.

2. According to the apostle Paul, whereby can we be successful in our Christian

life? Galatians 5:6.

". , . You are to maintain this connection with Christ by faith and the continual
surrender of your will to Him; and so long as you do this, He will work in you to will
and to do according to His good pleasure. . . ,Then with Christ working in you, you
will manifest the same spirit and do the same good works-works of righteousness,
obedience." -Steps to Christ, pp. 62, 63.
"When we speak of faith, there is a distinction that should be borne in
mind. . . . Where there is not only a belief in God's word, but a submission of the
will to Him; where the heart is yielded to Him, the affections fixed upon Him, there is
faith-faith that works by love and purifies the soul. . . ." -Ibid.

Prayer o Monday
December 3
3. What is essential in the development of a Christian character? Why is it com-
pared with the physical breath? 1 Thessalonians 5:17.

-34-
"Prayer is heaven's ordained means of success in the conflict with sin and the
development of Christian character. The divine influences that come in answer to the
prayer of faith will accomplish in the soul of the suppliant all for which he pleads. For
the pardon of sin, for the Holy Spirit, for a Christlike temper, for wisdom and strength
to do His work, for any gift He has promised, we may ask; and the promise is, 'Ye
shall receive.' "- The Acts of the Apostles. p. 564.
"Unceasing prayer is the unbroken union of the soul with God, so that life from
God flows into our life; and from our life, purity and holiness flow back to God." -Steps
to Christ, p. 98.
4. What instruction did the Lord give concerning effective personal prayer?
Why is prayer necessary if the Lord already knows every secret thing? Mat-
thew 6:6.

"The Lord speaks; enter into your closet, and in silence commune with your own
heart; listen to the voice of truth and conscience. Nothing will give such clear views of
self as secret prayer. He who seeth in secret and knoweth all things will enlighten
your understanding and answer your petitions. . . ."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 163.
" ... It is in the mount with God-the secret place of communion-that we are
to contemplate His glorious ideal for humanity. Thus we shall be enable so to fashion
our character-building that to us may be fulfilled the promise, 'I will dwell in them,
and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.' "-Gospel
Workers, p. 254.

The Word of God 0 Tuesday

December 4
5. What is another means ordained by heaven to assist in building a satisfac-
tory character? 2 Timothy 3: 16, 17.

" . . . The Scriptures are the great agency in the transformation of character.
Christ prayed, 'Sanctify them through Thy truth; Thy word is truth.' John 17:17. If
studied and obeyed, the word of God works in the heart, subduing every unholy at-
tribute. The Holy Spirit comes to convict of sin, and the faith that springs up in the
heart works by love to Christ, conforming us in body, soul, and spirit to His own im-
age. . . ." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 100.
6. What power is in the word of God that is able to transform those who really
receive it to themselves personally? Ecclesiastes 7:12 (last part); John 6:63
(last part); 17:3.

"The creative energy that called the worlds into existence is in the word of God.
This word imparts power; it begets life. Every command is a promise; accepted by
the will, received into the soul, it brings with it the life of the Infinite One. It
transforms the nature and re-creates the soul in the image of God." -Education, p. 126.
The Thoughts 0 Wednesday
December 5
7. What did the apostle Paul recommend the believers to keep in mind in order
to be built up and have an inheritance among the sanctified? Acts 20:32.

"Let .us make God's holy word our study, bringing its holy principles into our
lives. Let us walk before God in meekness and humility, daily correcting our faults.
Let us not by selfish pride separate the soul from God. Cherish not a feeling of lofty
supremacy, thinking yourself better than others. 'Let him that thinketh he standeth
take heed lest he fall.' Peace and rest will come to you as you bring your will into

-35-
subjection to the will of Christ. Then the love of Christ will rule in the heart, bringing
into captivity to the Saviour the secret springs of action. The hasty, easily roused
temper will be soothed and subdued by the oil of Christ's grace. The sense of sins
forgiven will bring that peace that passeth all understanding. There will be an earnest
striving to overcome all that is opposed to Christian perfection. Variance will disap-
pear. He who once found fault with those around him will see that far greater faults
exist in his own character." -Messages to Young People. p. 73.

8. What is the significance of the heart in the spiritual sense? Why must it be
specially guarded? Proverbs 4:23.

"As man 'thinketh in his heart, so is he.' Proverbs 23:7. The heart must be
renewed by divine grace, or it will be in vain to seek for purity of life." -Patriarchs and
Prophets. p. 460.
"Upright principles and pure sentiments, cultivated and practiced, form a
character after the divine similitude."- Testimonies to Ministers, p. 120.

The Subjects of Thought o Thursday

December 6
9. How does the apostle Paul make it quite clear that the believer has to learn a
whole new way of thinking? Romans 12:2.

"As a man 'thinketh in his heart, so is he.' Many thoughts make up the unwritten
history of a single day; and these thoughts have much to do with the formation of
character. Our thoughts are to be strictly guarded; for one impure thought makes a
deep impression on the soul. An evil thought leaves an evil impress on the mind. If the
thoughts are pure and holy, the man is better for having cherished them. . . ." -Messages to
Young People, p. 144.

10. Upon what should our minds dwell? What series of tests should screen any
subject for our meditation or thought? Philippians 4:8.

"In order to make life a success, the thoughts must be steadily fixed upon the ob-
ject of life, and not left to wander off and be occupied with unimportant things, or to
be satisfied with idle musing, which is the fruit of shunning responsibility."- Testimonies,
vol. 2, p. 429.

Lesson 11 Sabbath, December 15,1979

TO GROW IN GRACE

Without the grace of God man was spiritually dead but now as a believer he must
be alive to God and be growing in grace

KEY TEXT: "But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was
bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly
than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me."
1 Corinthians 15:10.

To Become Like Him D Sunday

December 9
1. What did the Saviour say was the prerequisite for eternal life? What effect
should this knowledge have? John 17:3.

"The knowledge of God as revealed in Christ is the knowledge that all who are
saved must have. This is the knowledge that works transformation of character.
Received into the life, it will re-create the soul in the image of Christ. This is the
knowledge that God invites His children to receive, beside which all else is vanity and
nothingness."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 475.
2. What has the Lord commanded His children in view of His own character?
How may this requirement be fulfilled? 1 Peter 1:15, 16.

"God has commanded us, 'Be ye holy; for I am holy;' and an inspired apostle
declares that without holiness 'no man shall see the Lord.' Holiness is agreement with
God. By sin the image of God in man has been marred and well-nigh obliterated; it is
the work of the gospel to restore that which has been lost; and we are to co-operate
with the divine agency in this work. And how can we come into harmony with God,
how shall we receive His likeness, unless we obtain a knowledge of Him? It is this
knowledge that Christ came into the world to reveal unto uS."-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 743.
KnowingJesus D Monday
December 10
3. Where does the apostle Paul tell the believers to keep their attention fo-
cused? What will be the result if we do this faithfully? Hebrews 12:2.

". . . Our daily and hourly work is set forth in the words of the apostle: 'Look-
ing unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith.' While doing this our minds
become clearer and our faith stronger, and our hope is confirmed; we are so engross-
ed with the view of His purity and loveliness, and the sacrifice He has made to bring
us into agreement with God, that we have no disposition to speak of doubts and
discouragements." - Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 744.
"Brethren and sisters, it is by beholding that we become changed. By dwelling
upon the love of God and our Saviour, by contemplating the perfection of the divine

-37-
character and claiming the righteousness of Christ as ours by faith, we are to be
transformed into the same image. . . ."-Ibid.
4. When Philip came to Jesus with a request to see the Father, how did Jesus
show his real need? How did the foolish virgins reach a similar condition?
John 14:8, 9; Matthew 25:2, 3.

"They [the class represented by the foolish virgins] do not know God. They have
not studied His character; they have not held communion with Him; therefore they do
not know how to trust, how to look and live. Their service to God degenerates into a
form." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 411.

The Pure in Heart o Tuesday

December 11
5. For what reason are many unable to understand or contemplate God? With
what measure do they try to comprehend? Psalm 50:21.

"Selfishness prevents us from beholding God. The self-seeking spirit judges of

. God as altogether such a one as itself."- The Desire 0/ Ages. p. 302.
6. What did the Saviour tell His hearers was necessary if they would see God?
Matthew 5:8.

"The pure in heart see God in a new and endearing relation, as their Redeemer;
and while they discern the purity and loveliness of His character, they long to reflect
H.is image."- Thoughts From the Mount 0/ Blessing. p. 26.

The Work of God's Grace o Wednesday

December 12
7. What homely parable did Jesus use to explain the influence of His grace upon
the human heart? What are the implications of this? Matthew 13:33.

" . . . But in the Saviour's parable, leaven is used to represent the kingdom of
heaven. It illustrates the quickening, assimilating power ofthe grace of God." -Christ's
Object Lessons, p. 96.
"But man cannot transform himself by the exercise of his will. He possesses no
power by which this change can be effected. The leaven-something wholly from
without-must be put into the meal before the desired change can be wrought in it. So
the grace of God must be received by the sinner before he can be fitted for the
kingdom of glory. All the culture and education which the world can give will fail of
making a degraded child of sin a child of heaven. The renewing energy must come
from God. . . ." -Ibid.
8. How did the apostle Paul describe the work of divine grace upon his own
heart? To Whom did he give all the credit and what lesson can we learn from
this? 1 Corinthians 15:10.

"None are so vile, none have fallen so low, as to be beyond the working of this
power. In all who will submit themselves to the Holy Spirit a new principle of life is to
be implanted; the lost image of God is to be restored in humanity." -Christ's Object Lessons.
p.96.

The Dead May Live o Thursday
December 13
9. Why is there no change in many who profess to believe the truth? What is
really the experience of such? Revelation 3: 1.

"Often the question arises, Why, then are there so many, claiming to believe
God's word, in whom there is not seen a reformation in words, in spirit, and in
character? Why are there so many who cannot bear opposition to their purposes and
plans, who manifest an unholy temper, and whose words are harsh, overbearing and
passionate? There is seen in their lives the same love of self, the same selfish in-
dulgence, the same temper and hasty speech, that is seen in the life of the worldling.
There is the same sensitive pride, the same yielding to natural inclination, the same
perversity of character, as if the truth were wholly unknown to them. The reason is
that they are not converted. They have not hidden the leaven of truth in the heart. It
has not had opportunity to do its work. Their natural and cultivated tendencies to evil
have not been submitted to its transforming power. Their lives reveal the absence of
the grace of Christ, an unbelief in His power to transform the character." -Christ's Object
Lessons, pp. 99, 100.

10. Through the grace of God, what change is wrought by the leaven of truth in
the hearts of those who receive it? Ephesians 2:1-5.

"Received into the heart, the leaven of truth will regulate the desires, purify the
thoughts, and sweeten the disposition. It quickens the faculties of the mind and the
energies of the soul. It enlarges the capacity for feeling, for loving." -Christ's Object
Lessons. p. 1Ol.
"The leaven of truth works a change in the whole man, making the coarse refin-
ed, the rough gentle, the selfish generous. By it the impure are cleansed, washed in
the blood of the Lamb. Through its life-giving power it brings all there is of mind and
soul and strength into harmony with the divine life. Man with his human 'nature
becomes a partaker of divinity. Christ is honored in excellence and perfection of
character. As these changes are effected, angels break forth in rapturous song, and
God and Christ rejoice over souls fashioned after the divine similitude." -Ibid.. p. 102.

Lesson 12 Sabbath, December 22,1979

A CONTINUING TRANSFORMATION

The transformation of character is a continuing process in which man has a most

active part to play but the Lord is most interested to help in every way necessary

KEY TEXT: "Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the
dead, and Christ shall give thee light." Ephesians 5:14.

By Willing Obedience o Sunday

December 16
1. What is necessary on our part in order that the Lord may work out the plan
of salvation in us? Philippians 2:12, 13.

"The work of gaining salvation is one of copartnership, a joint operation. There

is to be co-operation between God and the repentant sinner. This is necessary for the
formation of right principles in the character. Man is to make earnest efforts to over-
come that which hinders him from attaining to perfection. But he is wholly dependent
upon God for success. Human effort of itself is not sufficient. Without the aid of
divine power it avails nothing. God works and man works. Resistance of temptation
must come from man, who must draw his power from God. On the one side there is
infinite wisdom, compassion, and power; on the other, weakness, sinfulness, absolute
helplessness." - The Acts 0/ the Apostles, p. 482.
2. What is expected of every believer who wants the efforts of the divine agen-
cies to be effective in his behalf? What does .the Lord ask of us? Proverbs
23:26; Romans 12:1.

"He who determines to enter the spiritual kingdom will find that all the powers
and passions of an unregenerate nature, backed by the forces of the kingdom of
darkness, are arrayed against him. Selfishness and pride will make a stand against
anything that would show them to be sinful. We cannot, of ourselves, conquer the evil
desires and habits that strive for the mastery. We cannot overcome the mighty foe
who holds us in his thrall. God alone can give us the victory. He desires us to have the
mastery over ourselves, our own will and ways. But He cannot work in us without our
consent and co-operation. The divine Spirit works through the faculties and powers
given to man. Our energies are required to co-operate with God.
"The victory is not won without much earnest prayer, without the humbling of
self at every step. Our will is not to be forced into co-operation with divine agencies,
but it must be voluntarily submitted. Were it possible to force upon you with a hun-
dredfold greater intensity the influence of the Spirit of God, it would not make you a
Christian, a fit subject for heaven. The stronghold of Satan would not be broken. The
will must be placed on the side of God's will. You are not able, of yourself, to bring
your purposes and desires and inclinations into submission to the will of God; but if
you are 'willing to be made willing,' God will accomplish the work for you, . . ." - Thoughts
Frmn the Mount 0/ Blessing, pp. 141, 142.

Help by Self-discipline o Monday
December 17
3. What example has been set by the apostle Paul for all who desire to meet the
divine requirements? 1 Corinthians 9:25·27; Colossians 1:28,29.

"The work of transformation from unholiness to holiness is a continuous one.

Day by day God labors for man's sanctification, and man is to co-operate with Him,
putting forth persevering efforts in the cultivation of right habits. He is to add grace
to grace; and as he thus works on the plan of addition, God works for him on the plan
of multiplication. . . ."- The Acts 0/ the Apostles. p. 532.

4. What counsel is given lest the believer be satisfied with spasmodic efforts?
How long will the present battle with evil continue? 2 Timothy 2:22; Titus
2:2,3.

"Sanctification is not the work of a moment, an hour, a day, but of a lifetime. It is

not gained by a happy flight of feeling, but is the result of constantly dying to sin, and
constantly living for Christ. Wrongs cannot be righted nor reformations wrought in
the character by feeble, intermittent efforts. It is only by long, persevering effort,
sore discipline, and stern conflict, that we shall overcome. We know not one day how
strong will be our conflict the next. So long as Satan reigns, we shall have self to sub-
due, besetting sins to overcome; so long as life shall last, there will be no stopping
place, no point which we can reach and say, I have fully attained. Sanctification is the
result of lifelong obedience." -The Acts 0/ the Apostles. pp. 560. 561.
"It is not only at the beginning of the Christian life that this renunciation of self is
to be made. At every advance step heavenward it is to be renewed."-Chrisl's Object
Lesson~ pp. 159. 160.

Christ Wants to Lead the Way o Tuesday

December 18
5. What invitation is extended to us by the Lord so that His transforming grace
can be manifested in us? Matthew 16:24.

"The only hope for us if we would overcome is to unite our will to God's will and
work in co-operation with Him, hour by hour and day by day. . . . Are we willing to
pay the price required of us? Are we willing to have our will brought into perfect con-
formity to the will of God? Until we are willing, the transforming grace of God cannot
be manifest upon US." - Thoughts From the Mount 0/ Blessing. p. 143.

6. What question recorded by the prophet Isaiah shows that the Lord has made
every possible provision that His people may bear the fruits of the Spirit
abundantly? Isaiah 5:4.

" . . . What more could have been done for God's vineyard than has been done?
Light, precious light, shines upon God's people; but it will not save them unless they
consent to be saved by it, fully live up to it, and transmit it to others in darkness. God
calls upon His people to act. It is an individual work of confessing and forsaking sins
and returning unto the Lord that is needed. . . ."- Testimonies. vol. 2. p. 123.

-41-
A Time for Revival D Wednesday
December 19
7. What makes it very clear that there is more needed than just reformation?
What vision was given the servant of the Lord showing the true nature of this
need? Ephesians 5:14.

"A revival and a reformation must take place, under the ministration of the Holy
Spirit. Revival and reformation are two different things. Revival signifies a renewal of
spiritual life, a quickening of the powers of mind and heart, a resurrection from
spiritual death. Reformation signifies a reorganization, a change in ideas and theories,
habits and practices. Reformation will not bring forth the good fruit of righteousness
unless it is connected with the revival of the Spirit. Revival and reformation are to do
their appointed work, and in doing this work they must blend."-Review and Herald,
February 25, 1902,
"I had written thus far when I lost consciousness, and I seemed to be witnessing
a scene in Battle Creek.
"We were assembled in the auditorium . . .
"One arose from his bowed position and said that in the past he had not been in
union with certain ones and had felt no love for them, but that now he saw himself as
he was. With great solemnity he repeated the message to the Laodicean church:
• "Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of
nothing." In my self-sufficiency this is just the way I felt,' he said.• "And knowest
not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked." I now see
that this is my condition. My eyes are opened. My spirit has been hard and unjust. I
thought myself righteous, but my heart is broken, and I see my need of the precious
counsel of the One who has searched me through and through. Oh, how gracious and
compassionate and loving are the words, "I counsel thee to buy of Me gold tried in
the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and
that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve,
that thou mayest see." , Revelation 3: 17, 18.
"The speaker turned to those who had been praying, and said: 'We have
something to do. We must confess our sins, and humble our hearts before God.' He
made heartbroken confessions and then stepped up to several of the brethren, one
after another, and extended his hand, asking forgiveness. Those to whom he spoke
sprang to their feet, making confession and asking forgiveness, and they fell upon one
another's necks, weeping. . . ."-Testimonies, vol. 8, pp. 104, 105.
"No one seemed to be too proud to make heartfelt confession, and those who led'
in this work were the ones who had influence, but had not before had courage to con-
fess their sins." -Ibid.
8. What must take place in our days and with what result? Isaiah 60:1,2;
58:12.

"The time has come for a thorough reformation to take place. When this refor-
mation begins, the spirit of prayer will actuate every believer and will banish from the
church the spirit of discord and strife. Those who have not been living in Christian
fellowship will draw close to one another. One member working in right lines will lead
other members to unite with him in making intercession for the revelation of the Holy
Spirit. There will be no confusion, because all will be in harmony with the mind of the
Spirit. The barriers separating believer from believer will be broken down, and God's
servants will speak the same things. The Lord will co-operate with His servants. All

-42-
will pray understandingly the prayer that Christ taught His servants; 'Thy kingdom
come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.' Matthew 6: 10." - Testimonies, vol. 8,
p. 251.

Victory Through the Lord 0 Thursday

December 20
9. What condition must be reached by the church now militant in the defense of
the truth? Isaiah 61:10.

"Now the church is militant. Now we are confronted with a world in darkness,
almost wholly given over to idolatry. But the day is coming when the battle will have
been fought, the victory won. The will of God is to be done on earth as it is done in
heaven. The nations of the saved will know no other law than the law of heaven. All
will be a happy, united family, clothed with the garments of praise and thanksgiv-
ing-the robe of Christ's righteousness. All nature, in its surpassing loveliness, will
offer to God a tribute of praise and adoration. The world will be bathed in the light of
heaven. The light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun
will be sevenfold greater than it is now. The years will move on in gladness. Over the
scene the morning stars will sing together, and the sons of God will shout for joy,
while God and Christ will unite in proclaiming, 'There shall be no more sin, neither
shall there be any more death.' "- The Ministry of Heating. pp. 504, 506.

10. What will the Father see in the character of those who are overcomers?
Revelation 22:4.

". . . Oh, the wonders of redeeming love! the rapture of that hour when the in-
finite Father, looking upon the ransomed, shall behold His image, sin's discord
banished, its blight removed, and the human once more in harmony with the
divine!"- The Great Controversy, p. 646.

GOD'S PLAN FULFILLED

God wants His people to demonstrate to the world His glory and vindicate His
law before all the universe

KEY TEXT: "And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in
them." John 17:10.

The Accusation Refuted D Sunday

December 23
1. What accusation put in the mind and mouth of his servant by Satan was
revealed by Christ? How does this reveal the accusation made by Satan
before the whole universe? Matthew 25:24.

"From the beginning it has been Satan's studied plan to cause men to forget God,
that he might secure them to himself. Hence he has sought to misrepresent the
character of God, to lead men to cherish a false conception of Him. . . ."- Testimonies.
vol. 5, p. 738.

2. What is the purpose of God for His church? How do we know the extent of the
interest in this plan? Ephesians 3:10; Hebrews 12:1,2.

" . . . From the beginning it has been God's plan that through His church shall
be reflected to the world His fullness and His sufficiency. The members of the
church, those whom He has called out of darkness into His marvelous light, are to
show forth His glory. The church is the repository of the riches of the grace of Christ;
and through the church will eventually be made manifest, even to 'the principalities
and powers in heavenly places,' the final and full display of the love of God. Ephesians
3:10."-The Acts 0/ the Apostles, p. 9.
"Even these words fail of expressing the greatness and the glory of God's pur-
pose to be accomplished through His people. Not to this world only but to the
universe are we to make manifest the principles of His kingdom."-Testinzonies. vol. 6, p.
13.

A Revealing of God's Glory D Monday

December 24
3. What request did Moses make of the Lord? What did He reveal of His pur-
pose for His people? Exodus 33:18, 19.

"It was the privilege of the Jewish nation to represent the character of God as it
had been revealed to Moses. In answer to the prayer of Moses, 'Show me Thy glory,'
the Lord promised, 'I will make all My goodness pass before thee.' Ex. 33:18, 19.
'And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, the Lord God, mer-
ciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy
for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.' Ex. 34:6, 7. This was the

-44-
fruit that God desired from His people. In the purity of their characters, in the
holiness of their lives, in their mercy and loving-kindness and compassion, they were
to show that 'the law ofthe Lord is perfect, converting the soul.' Ps. 19:7." -Christ's Ob·
ject Lessons, pp. 285, 286.

4. What unforgettable experience was given the prophet Isaiah of the revela-
tion of the glory of God? How widespread is to be the final manifestation in
this world? Isaiah 6:1-3; 35:1, 2.

" . . . God's glory, His character, His merciful kindness and tender love-that
which Moses had pleaded in behalf of Israel-were to be revealed to all mankind. And
. this promise of Jehovah was made doubly sure; it was confirmed by an oath. As sure-
ly as God lives and reigns, His glory should be declared 'among the heathen, His
wonders among all people.' Psalm 96:3." -Prophets and Kings, p. 313.

Jesus Revealed God's Glory D Tuesday

December 25
5. What effect did the beholding of the glory of God have on the prophet Isaiah?
Isaiah 6:7; 57:15.

"In beholding his God, the prophet, like Saul of Tarsus at the gate of Damascus,
had not only been given a view of his own unworthiness; there had come to his hum-
bled heart the assurance of forgiveness, full and free; and he had arisen a changed
man. He had seen his Lord. He had caught a glimpse of the loveliness of the divine
character. He could testify of the transformation wrought through beholding Infinite
Love. . . ." -Prophets and Kings, p. 314.

6. When the Saviour had come to the end of His life as the Son of man, what was
He able to say? What had His Father given Him to do? John 17:4.

"Christ came to reveal God to the world as it God of love, full of mercy,
tenderness, and compassion. The thick darkness with which Satan had endeavored to
enshroud the throne of Deity was swept away by the world's Redeemer, and the
Father was again manifest to men as the light of life.
". . . Christ declares Himself to be sent into the world as a representative of the
Father. In His nobility of character, in His mercy and tender pity, in His love and
goodness, He stands before us as the embodiment of divine perfection, the image of
the invisible God. "- Testimonies. vol. 5, pp. 738, 739.

God's Glory Revealed to the World D Wednesday

December 26
7. After the ascension of Christ, what was the Father's purpose through the
disciples? John 17:10.

". . . The Saviour was deeply anxious for His disciples to understand for what
purpose His divinity was united to humanity. He came to the world to display the
glory of God, that man might be uplifted by its restoring power. God was manifested
in Him that He might be manifested in them. Jesus revealed no qualities, and exercis-
ed no powers, that men may not have through faith in Him. His perfect humanity is
that which all His followers may possess, if they will be in subjection to God as He
was." - The Desire of Ages, p. 664.

-45-
8. What is revealed concerning the final work of the plan of salvation? Revela-
tion 18:1.

". . . the loud cry of the third angel has already begun in the revelation of the
righteousness of Christ, the sin-pardoning Redeemer. This is the beginning of the
light of the angel whose glory shall fill the whole earth." -Review and Herald, November 22,
1892.
"The message of Christ's righteousness is to sound from one end of the earth to
the other to prepare the way of the Lord. This is the glory of God, which closes the
work of the third angel." - Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 19.

The Final Appeal o Thursday

December 27
9. If we have been found faithful, how will this glory be manifested in us? Mat-
thew 5:16.

". . . The glory of this light, which is the very glory of the character of Christ, is
to be manifested in the individual Christian, in the family, in the church, in the
ministry of the word, and in every institution established by God's people. All these
the Lord designs shall be symbols of what can be done for the world. They are to be
types of the saving power of the truths of the gospel. They are agencies in the fulfill-
ment of God's great purpose for the human raCe."-Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 11.

10. While the light of justification by faith is still shining, what shall we do to
secure our salvation? What will be our last responsibility before the close of
probation? Isaiah 55:6, 7.

"We are living in an important period of this earth's history; and with the light of
truth shining upon us, we cannot now be excused for a moment in meeting a low stan-
dard. As co-workers with Christ, we are privileged to share with Christ in His suffer-
ing. We are to look at His life, study His character, and copy the pattern. What Christ
was in His perfect humanity, we must be; for we must form characters for
eternity." - Testimonies to Ministers, p. 173.

THE THIRTEENTH SABBATH OFFERING
AN URGENT APPEAL FOR HELP
TO COMPLETE AN IMPORTANT PROJECT
CHURCH AND CENTER FOR ANDEAN UNION

Some time ago the Andean Union requested the help of the Thir-
teenth Sabbath offering on behalf of their center in Lima, Peru. For
quite a long time, they have had this project in mind to meet their
need, and have been planning to bring it to pass. They were able to
secure a lot in a suitable location and then prepared plans for a
building that would provide a meeting place large enough for
general gatherings and conferences, and office space for the ad-
ministration of both the Union and the Peruvian conferences.

The plan for this project was approved by the General Con-
ference committee, and the work was started. By their own efforts"
and with some help that they were able to receive, the building has
been almost completed. The roof is on and the last Union delegates'
session was able to use the building although it was not finished.

This appeal comes so that the project may be completed and the
debts paid off. The brethren there went ahead as they were able and
have confidence that this appeal to their brethren around the world
will not fall on deaf ears and ungenerous hearts. They look to us all to
put our hand with theirs to finish this building.
