FOREWORD
This quarterly is based on the book of Proverbs, which carries the title,
"THE PROVERBS OF SOLOMON THE SON OF DAVID, KING OF
ISRAEL." Among the early Christian writers it was known as the book of
"Wisdom" and was often used as a manual of instruction for young people.
Jerome (c. 347-420 A.D.), who translated the Bible into Latin, recommended
that, after learning the Psalms, boys and girls should be trained in the disci-
pline of life by studying the book of Proverbs. Martin Luther's recommenda-
tion was that the man who aimed at piety should make the book of Proverbs
his constant companion. This was sound advice, because the book is full of
instructions concerning behavior in the common transactions of life, in which
the thought of God and of His continual presence holds the chief place. It may
be called "the book of spiritual common sense" revealed in the form of in-
structive similitudes and proverbs. The servant of the Lord says:
"There is no branch of legitimate business for which the Bible does not
afford an essential preparation. Its principles of diligence, honesty, thrift,
temperance, and purity are the secret of true success. These principles, as set
forth in the book of Proverbs, constitute a treasury of practical wisdom."-
Education, p. 135.
"In the proverbs of Solomon are outlined principles of holy living and high
endeavor, principles that are heaven-born and that lead to godliness, princi-
ples that should govern every act of life. It was the wide dissemination of these
principles, and the recognition of God as the One to whom all praise and honor
belong, that made Solomon's early reign a time of moral uplift as well as of
material prosperity."-Prophets and Kings, pp. 33, 34. ,
It will be noticed that, for emphasis, the truth is often presented from two
opposite standpoints in the Proverbs. Contrast often makes a proposition
seem more forcible than when it stands alone.
In order to reap the full advantage from the study of the book of Proverbs,
we should read it in the light of the rest of the Holy Scriptures, especially the
New Testament, where the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is clearly brought
out. These lessons were prepared with this in mind. Therefore, notwithstand-
ing the fact that this quarterly is entitled Lessons From the Book ofProverbs,
correlated verses from other books of the Bible have also been included when-
ever more light was deemed necessary.
May the Spirit of God impress the minds of our teachers and students as
they go through these lessons!

The 13th Sabbath Offering
for South India Mission

"India, also known as Bharat, a republic in southern Asia formed of a

union of states and territories, is the seventh largest and the second most
populous country in the world. It covers an area of 1,261,810 square miles
(3,268,090 square kilometres), with a land frontier of 9,425 miles and a coast-
line of 3,535 miles. At the time of the 1971 census its population was approx-
imately 550,000,000 [some 700,000,000 at the present time]. It has an annual
population-growth rate of 2.3 percent-representing an increase of around
13,000,000 a year; the birth bulge consequently constitutes one of the coun-
try's most serious problems....
"India is more a subcontinent that a country. Its regional diversities are
reflected in the mosaic of its myriad races, languages, and religions, in the
differing dress, manners, ways of life and thought, and in its wide disparities
in education and illiteracy, in poverty and wealth. India's people range from
the primitive to the most sophisticated. The overall literacy rate at the start
of the present decade averaged barely 30 percent of the population, and the
average per capita income was less than U.S. $80 a year. Since 1960, per cap-
ita real income has tended to slow down, though the net national income has
increased-a paradox that is largely explained by the intimidating rate of pop-
ulation growth."- The New Encyclopaedia Britannica, vol. 9, p. 276.
The South India Mission was incorporated in November 26, 1977, in
Pondicherry, and this place was considered the headquarters unti11981 when
the brethren decided to move the headquarters to Madras. At that time Breth-
ren A. C. Sas and D. Dumitru were sent to India to help the South India Mis-
sion find and appropriate place for its headquarters. A property was located
and leased for this purpose in Pallavaram, Madras, with good access to trans-
portation facilities and close to the international airport. The brethren of the
South India Mission asked the assistance of the General Conference. A 13th
Sabbath offering was taken for this purpose, but this was not enough to meet
the obligations. Therefore, the 13th Sabbath offering for the 2nd quarter of
1984 is for the same project, and a future offering may also be needed.
We know that you are aware of the economic conditions in India and that
our brethren there are not rich in this world's goods. Therefore, let those of
us who live under more favorable circumstances extend to them a helping
hand and share in the burdens of our brethren in India so that the work of the
gospel may go forward in that country. Give generously as the Lord has pros-
pered you and as you are impressed by His Spirit. Remember that the Lord
keeps a record of those who unselfishly give of their means to support the
work of God on the earth. The brethren in India are also appreciative of your
generous help. Remember to plan ahead and give cheerfully.

Lesson 1 Sabbath, April 7, 1984

THE EXCELLENCY OF TRUE WISDOM

"The greatest wisdom, and most essential, is the knowledge of God. Self sinks into
insignificance as it contemplates God and Jesus Christ whom He hath sent. The
Bible must be made the foundation for all study. Individually we must learn from
this lesson-book which God has given us, the condition of the salvation of our
souls. "-Fundamentals of Christian Education, p. 451.

KEY TEXT: "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom" (Proverbs 4:7).

Christ in the Book ofProverbs D Sunday

April!

1. Who is the Source of all true wisdom? Isaiah 11:1,2; James 1:5.

"God is the author of all wisdom, all intelligence, all talent."-Testimonies. vol. 7, p, 128,
"From God, the fountain of wisdom, proceeds all the knowledge that is of value to
man, all that the intellect can grasp or retain." -Counsels to Parents, Teachers. and Stlldmts. p. 360,

2. Assuming the title of Wisdom in the plan of creation, what does the Son of
God declare concerning Himself? Proverbs 8:22. Under what other titles does
John refer to the Son of God in the same plan? John 1:1-3; Revelation 3: 14.

"The Son of God declares concerning Himself: 'The Lord possessed Me in the
beginning of His way, before His works of old. I was set up from everlasting.... When
He appointed the foundations of the earth: then I was by Him, as one brought up with
Him: and I was daily His delight, rejoicing always before Him.' Proverbs 8:22-30."-
Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 34.

The Fear of the Lord D Monday

April 2

:-J. What is the beginning of true wisdom? Proverbs 1:7; 15:3:-J. How important
is true wisdom in comparison with wordly wisdom?

"True wisdom is a treasure as lasting as eternity. Many of the world's so-called

wise men are wise only in their own estimation. Content with the acquisition of worldly
wisdom, they never enter the garden of God, to become acquainted with the treasures
of knowledge contained in His holy Word. Supposing themselves to be wise, they are
ignorant concerning the wisdom which all must have who gain eternal life....
"Those who are striving for an education in the sciences, but who have not learned
the lesson that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom, are working helplessly and
hopelessly, questioning the reality of everything. They may acquire an education in
the sciences, but unless they gain a knowledge of the Bible and a knowledge of God,

-5-
they are without true wisdom. The unlearned man, if he knows God and Jesus Christ,
has a more enduring wisdom than has the most learned man who despises the instruc-
tion of God."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 3, p. 1156.

4. What is true wisdom to him that has it? Proverbs 16:22 (first part). How has
the Lord revealed to us the way to life?

"In giving us His word, God has put us in possession of every truth essential for
our salvation. Thousands have drawn water from these wells of life, yet there is no di-
minishing of the supply. Thousands have set the Lord before them, and by beholding
have been changed into the same image." -Christ's Object Lessons. pp. 133, 134.

The Most Important Possession o Tuesday

April 3

5. What is Solomon's advice with reference to the obtaining of true wisdom?

Proverbs 4:7. What does Job say in this regard? Job 28:12-18.

"This [wisdom] is the treasure that is found in the Scriptures. The Bible is God's
great lesson book, His great educator. The foundation of all true science is contained
in the Bible. Every branch of knowledge may be found by searching the word of God.
And above all else it contains the science of all sciences, the science of salvation. The
Bible is the mine of the unsearchable riches of Christ. The true higher education is
gained by studying and obeying the word of God."-Christ's Object Lessons. p. 107.

6. What is said of those who find true wisdom? Proverbs :-J:13-15.

The Path of the Righteous o Wednesday

April 4

7. What is the experience of those who possess true wisdom? Proverbs 4:18.

"The path of the just is progressive, from strength to strength, from grace to grace,
and from glory to glory. The divine illumination will increase more and more, corre-
sponding with our onward movements, qualifying us to meet the responsibilities and
emergencies before us."- Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 542.
"Those who walk in wisdom's ways are, even in tribulation, exceeding joyful; for
He whom their soulloveth, walks, invisible, beside them. At each upward step they
discern more distinctly the touch of His hand; at every step brighter gleamings of glory
from the Unseen fall upon their path. "-TJUJu,I(hts From the Mount o/Blessin,l(, p. 140,

8. How do the possessors of true wisdom light the way for others? Matthew 5:
14-16.

"A soul filled with the love of Jesus lends to the words, the manners, the looks,
hope, courage and serenity. It reveals the spirit of Christ. It breathes a love which will
be reflected. It awakens a desire for a better life; souls ready to faint are strengthened;
those struggling against temptation will be fortified and comforted. The words, the
expression, the manners throw out a bright ray of sunshine, and leave behind them a
clear path toward heaven, the source of all light."- The SDA Bih/I' COli/lI/elllary IE.G. White
Comments I, vol. 3, p. 1156,

-6-
Companions and Enemies of True Wisdom o Thursday
April 5

9. What are some of the things that true wisdom loves? Proverbs 8:12, 14, 17,
20; James 3:13,17. What are the fruits of true higher education?

"The most desirable education is a knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of

heaven.... Through this knowledge spiritual perfection is reached; the life becomes
holy and Christlike....
"Higher education is not gained by the study of a certain class of books that worldly
teachers deem essential, but by the study of the word of God. This study will lead to
obedience to His requirements and to a constant walking in the footsteps of Christ.
There is no education higher than that to be found in the lessons that Christ gave."-
Counsels to Parents, Teachers. and Students. pp. 399, 400.

10. What are some of the things that true wisdom hates? Proverbs 8: 13. Mention
some of the things that belong to false (or satanic) wisdom. James 3:14-16.
What is our only safeguard against these evils?

"He who opens his heart to the suggestions of the enemy, taking in evil surmisings,
and cherishing jealousy, frequently misconstrues this evil-mindedness, calling it special
foresight, discrimination, or discernment in detecting guilt and fathoming the evil mo-
tives of others. He considers that a precious gift has been vouchsafed to him; and he
draws apart from the very brethren with whom he should be in harmony; he climbs
upon the judgment seat, and shuts his heart against the one he supposes to be in error,
as though he himself were above temptation. Jesus separates from him, and leaves him
to walk in the sparks of his own kindling.... Such wisdom has many admirers, but it
is very deceptive and harmful. ... Its originator is Satan himself."- The SDA Bible Com-
mentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, pp. 936, 937.
"Live in contact with the living Christ, and He will hold you firmly by a hand that
will never let go. Know and believe the love that God has to us, and you are secure;
that love is a fortress impregnable to all the delusions and assaults of Satan."- TlIOUghtS
From the Mount of Blessing, p. 119.

Lesson 2 Sabbath, April 14, 1984

THE APPLICATION OF TRUE WISDOM

"The Lord c&n work most effectually through those who are most sensible of their
own insufficiency, and who will rely upon Him as their leader and source of
strength. He will make them strong by uniting their weakness to His might, and
wise by connecting their ignorance with His wisdom."-Patriarchs and Prophets,
p.553.

KEY TEXT: "Get wisdom.... Exalt her, and she shall promote thee" (Proverbs 4:5,
8).
Reward of Searching D Sunday
April 8

1. How does God promise to reward those who search for true wisdom as for gold
and silver? Proverbs 2:3-5. In His prayer to the Father, in what words did
Christ ask that this knowledge be granted to the disciples? John 17:3.

"In His prayer to the Father, Christ gave to the world a lesson which should be
graven on mind and soul. 'This is life eternal,' He said, 'that they might know Thee
the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent.' John 17:3. This is true
education. It imparts power. The experimental knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ
whom He has sent, transforms man into the image of God. It gives to man the mastery
of himself, bringing every impulse and passion of the lower nature under the control
of the higher powers of the mind. It makes its possessor a son of God and an heir of
heaven. It brings him into communion with the mind of the Infinite, and opens to him
the rich treasures of the universe.
"This is the knowledge which is obtained by searching the word of God. And this
treasure may be found by every soul who will give all to obtain it." -Christ's Object Lessons,
p. 114.

2. What are the first results of searching for true wisdom? Proverbs 2:6-11.

Important Benefits D Monday

April 9

3. Where do we find refuge, confidence, and safety? Proverbs 1:33; 3:21-26;

Matthew 7:24, 25.

"Our only safety will be found in constantly seeking wisdom from God, in carefully
weighing every matter with much fear and trembling, lest there should be brought into
the work not the light of heaven, but the weakness of man. But the Lord has promised
to give light to those who seek Him with the whole heart. If we will but wait patiently
and prayerfully upon God, and not follow our own impetuous plans, He will guide our
decisions and open many doors of hope and labor." -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 211.

-8-
4. Where is preservation, honor, and peace to be found? Proverbs 4:5, 6, 8, 9;
3:17.

Health and Life o Tuesday

April 10

5. Upon what does physical and spiritual health depend? Proverbs 4:20-22.

"The love of Jesus in the soul will banish all hatred, selfishness, and envy; for the
law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. There is health in obedience to God's
law."- The SDA Bible Commenlary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 1, p. 1105.
"Godliness does not conflict with the laws of health, but is in harmony with them.
Had men ever been obedient to the law of ten commandments, had they carried out in
their lives the principles of these ten precepts, the curse of disease that now floods the
world would not be.... One whose mind is quiet and satisfied in God is on the highway
to health." -Ibid.. vol. 3, p. 1156.
6. In what sense is true wisdom a tree of life? Proverbs 3:18; 14:27.

"Practical religion breathes its fragrance everywhere. It is a savor of life unto life."
-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 3, p. 1157.
"The word of the living God is not merely written, but spoken. The Bible is God's
voice speaking to us, just as surely as though we could hear it with our ears."-Testinumies,
vol. 6, p. 393.
"Its living principles are as the leaves of the tree of life for the healing of the na-
tions." -Ibid.

Nationwide Influence o Wednesday

April 11
7. If legislative bodies are governed by true wisdom, what kind of laws will they
pass? Proverbs 8:14-16.

8. What happens where true wisdom is despised or neglected on a national level?

Hosea 4:6. What warning should we take from ancient Israel?

"The glorious possibilities set before Israel could be realized only through obedi-
ence to God's commandments. The same elevation of character, the same fullness of
blessing-blessing on mind and soul and body, blessing on house and field, blessing
for this life and for the life to come-is possible for us only through obedience."-Chrisls
Object Lessons, p. 305.
"For the rejection of Christ, with the results that followed, they [the Jewish leaders]
were responsible. A nation's sin and a nation's ruin were due to the religious leaders.
In our day are not the same influences at work?" -Ibid.
Hate for the Truth o Thursday
. April12

9. What fruits will be gathered, in this life, by those who hate true wisdom? Prov-
erbs 1:30-32. What was the cause of much of the degradation, misery, un-
rest, and bloodshed that marked a large part of Europe in the past?

"When Satan wrought through the Roman Church to lead men away from obedi-
ence, his agency was concealed, and his work was so disguised that the degradation

-9-
and misery which resulted were not seen to be the fruit of transgression. And his power
was so far counteracted by the working of the Spirit of God that his purposes were
prevented from reaching their full fruition. The people did not trace the effect to its
cause and discover the source of their miseries. But in the [French] Revolution the
law of God was openly set aside by the National Council. And in the Reign of Terror
which followed, the working of cause and effect could be seen by all. "-The e"ratContro-
ver.~v. pp. 285. 286.
"Atheists, infidels, and apostates oppose and denounce God's law; but the results
of their influence prove that the well-being of man is bound up with his obedience of
the divine statutes. Those who will not read the lesson from the book of God are bid-
den to read it in the history of nations." -Ibid.. p. 285.

10. For what reason do men usually miss the way of true wisdom, although it is
not hidden beyond the possibility of being found by the honest searcher? Prov-
erbs 1:20-29; John 3:19-21.

"Those who battle for the truth, against its opposers, should realize that they are
not meeting merely men, but that they are contending with Satan and his angels, who
are determined that error and darkness shall retain the field and the truth be covered
up with error. As error is most in accordance with the natural heart, it is taken for
granted to be clear. Men who are at ease love error and darkness, and are unwilling to
be reformed by the truth. They do not love to come to the light, lest their deeds should
be reproved."- Testimonies. vol. 1. p. 624.

Recapitulation o Friday
April 13

a. What does the experimental knowledge of God and of His Son do?
b. Wherein do we find our only safety?
c. To what is the word of God compared? For what purpose was it given?
d. How, only, is elevation of character and fullness of blessing possible?
e. What is the effect of the influence exerted by atheists. infidels. and apostates? •

"Every day some portion of

time should be appropriated to
the study of the lessons. "-Counsels on
Sabbath School Work, p. 53.

Lesson 3 Sabbath, April 21, 1984

OBEDIENCE vs. DISOBEDIENCE

"From Adam's day to the present time the great controversy has been concerning
obedience to God's law. In all ages there have been those who claimed a right to
the favor of God even while they were disregarding some of His commands. But
the Scriptures declare that by works is 'faith made perfect;' and that, without the
works of obedience, faith 'is dead.' "-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 73.

KEY TEXT: "The way of the Lord is strength to the upright" (Proverbs 10:29).
Importance of Obedience D Sunday
April 15
1. What is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice? Proverbs 21:3; 1 Samuel
15:22; John 15:10.

"We have unmistakable evidence of the voice of the True Shepherd, and He is
calling upon us to follow Him. He says, 'I have kept my Father's commandments.' He
leads His sheep in the path of humble obedience to the law of God, but He never en-
courages them in the transgression of that law. "-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Com-
ments], vol. 5, p. 1099.

2. How far is eternal life dependent upon obedience? Proverbs 19:16; Matthew
7:21; Luke 10:25-28.

"The condition of eternal life is now just what it always has been,-just what it
was in Paradise before the fall of our first parents,-perfect obedience to the law of
God, perfect righteousness. If eternal life were granted on any condition short of this,
then the happiness of the whole universe would be imperiled. The way would be open
for sin, with all its train of woe and misery, to be immortalized." -Steps to Christ, p. 62.
The Key to Success and Prosperity D Monday
April 16
3. On what condition has the Lord promised to give us success? Proverbs 16:3;
Psalm 37:5.

"Victories are not gained by ceremonies or display, but by simple obedience to

the highest General, the Lord God of heaven. He who trusts in this Leader will never
know defeat. Defeat comes in depending on human methods, human inventions, and
placing the divine secondary. Obedience was the lesson that the Captain of the Lord's
host sought to teach the vast armies of Israel-obedience in things in which they could
see no success. When there is obedience to the voice of our Leader, Christ will conduct
His battles in ways that will surprise the greatest powers of earth." -Testimonies, vol. 6, p.
140.

-11-
4. How important is obedience to the word of God in the interest of our prosper-
ity? Proverbs 10:9, 29; Joshua 1:8.

"The Lord made a covenant with Israel that, if they would obey His command-
ments, He would give them rain in due season, the land should yield her increase, and
the trees of the field should yield their fruit. He promised that their threshing should
reach unto the vintage and the vintage unto the sowingtime, and that they should eat
their bread to the full and dwell in their land safely. He would make their enemies to
perish. He would not abhor them, but would walk with them and would be their God,
and they should be His people. But if they disregarded His requirements, He would
deal with them entirely contrary to all this. His curse should rest upon them in place
of His blessing." - Testimonies. vol. 2, p. 661.

Other Blessings o Tuesday

April 17

5. How shall we find favor and good understanding in the sight of God and man?
Proverbs 3:3, 4. On what condition will the Lord direct our paths? Proverbs
3:5,6.

"So long as we come to our heavenly Father humbly and with a spirit to be taught,
willing and anxious to learn, why should we doubt God's fulfilment of His own promise?
You must not for a moment doubt Him and dishonor Him thereby. When you have
sought to know His will, your part in the operation with God is to believe that you will
be led and guided and blessed in the doing of His will. We may mistrust ourselves lest
we misinterpret His teachings, but make even this a subject of prayer, and trust Him,
still trust Him to the uttermost, that His Holy Spirit will lead you to interpret aright
His plans and the working of His providence."- The SDA Bible Commenlary [E.G. White Com-
ments], vol. 3, pp. 1155. 1156.

6. What physical and spiritual blessings will come as a result of our obedience?
Proverbs 3:1, 2, 7, 8. How does the peace of God in the heart affect a person's
health?

"There are today thousands suffering from physical disease, who, like the para-
lytic, are longing for the message, 'Thy sins are forgiven.' The burden of sin, with its
unrest and unsatisfied desires, is the foundation of their maladies. They can find no
relief until they come to the Healer of the soul. The peace which He alone can give
would impart vigor to the mind, and health to the body."-The Desire of AA'es. p. 270.

Liberality Rewarded/Unfaithfulness Punished o Wednesday

April 18

7. How will God reward those who are faithful and liberal in the payment of
tithes and offerings? Proverbs 3:9, 10; 11:25; Malachi 3: 10, 11.

8. How will many unfaithful stewards be punished? Malachi 3:7-9.

"Those who are selfishly withholding their means need not be surprised if God's
hand scatters. That which should have been devoted to the advancement of the work
and cause of God, but which has been withheld, may be entrusted to a reckless son,
and he may squander it. ... God can scatter the means He has lent to His stewards, if
they refuse to use it to His glory. Some, I saw, may have none of these losses to remind

-12 -
them of their remissness in duty, but their cases may be the more hopeless."- Testimonies,
vol. 2, pp. 661, 662.

A Solemn Choice Before Us o Thursday

April 19

9. What choice has God placed before us? Deuteronomy 30:15-19. What prom-
ise belongs to those who choose to be obedient children of God? Isaiah 1: 19;
Proverbs 13:13 (second part).

"It is not the plan of God to compel men to yield their wicked unbelief. Before them
are light and darkness, truth and error. It is for them to decide which to accept. The
human mind is endowed with power to discriminate between right and wrong. God
designs that men shall not decide from impulse, but from weight of evidence, carefully
comparing scripture with scripture."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 1,
p. 1120.
"This life and death question is before the whole human race. The choice we make
in this life will be our choice through all eternity. We shall receive either eternal life or
eternal death. There is no middle ground, no second probation."-lbid., vol. 6, p. 1112.

10. What threat rests upon the disobedient? Isaiah 1:20; Proverbs 13:13 (first
part). Where will the impenitent transgressors find no admittance? Revelation
22:15.

"None who have had the light of truth will enter the city of God as commandment
breakers. His law lies at the foundation of His government in earth and in heaven. If
they have knowingly trampled upon and despised His law on the earth, they will not
be taken to heaven to do the same work there; there is no change of character when
Christ comes."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 990.

Recapitulation o Friday
April 20

a. What is the relationship between obedience to God's law and the promise of
eternal life?
b. What is the result of our obedience to and trust in the Lord God of heaven?
How would we be defeated?
c. What is the relationship between sin and physical disease? Why is it that thou-
sands of sufferers can find relief in no one else but Christ?
d. Under what circumstances will God scatter the means He has entrusted to
His stewards?
e. Why would it be wrong to take unrepentant sinners to heaven in the hope that,
under the influence of the heavenly atmosphere. they would adapt themselves
to their new environment? (See Isaiah 26: 10.) •

Lesson 4 Sabbath, April 28, 1984

EXHORTATIONS AGAINST
SIN AND SINNERS

"The Redeemer of the world declares that there are greater sins than that for
which Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed. Those who hear the gospel invita-
tion calling sinners to repentance, and heed it not, are more guilty before God than
were the dwellers in the vale of Siddim. And still greater sin is theirs who profess

Forbidden Associations o Sunday

April 22

1. What is the exhortation against the enticings of sinners? Proverbs 1:10, 15, 16.

"Turn from the one who has ventured to present wrong practises to you.
Resolutely turn from the tempter, saying, I must separate from your influence; for I
know you are not walking in the footsteps of our Saviour.
"Even though you may not feel able to speak a word to those who are working on
wrong principles, leave them. Your withdrawal and silence may do more than words....
"Dare to be a Daniel. Dare to stand alone. Thus, as did Moses, you will endure
the seeing of Him who is invisible. But a cowardly and silent reserve before evil asso-
ciates, while you listen to their devices, makes you one with them."- The SDA Bible Com-
mentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 3, p. 1155.

2. How careful should we be in the choice of companions? Proverbs 2:10-12,20.

"As disciples of Christ we shall not mingle with the world from a mere love of plea-
sure, to unite with them in folly. Such associations can result only in harm. We should
never give sanction to sin by our words or our deeds, our silence or our presence.
Wherever we go, we are to carry Jesus with us, and to reveal to others the precious-
ness of our Saviour."- The Desire 0/ Ages, p. 152.

Specific Abominations o Monday

April 23

3. Mention seven things which are especially offensive in the eyes of the Lord.
Proverbs 6:16-19.

"Difficulties are often caused by the vendors of gossip, whose whispered hints and
suggestions poison unsuspecting minds and separate the closest friends. Mischief-

-14 -
makers are seconded in their evil work by the many who stand with open ears and evil
heart, saying: 'Report, ... and we will report it.' This sin should not be tolerated
among the followers of Christ. No Christian parent should permit gossip to be repeated
in the family circle or remarks to be made disparaging the members of the church."-
Testimonies, yol. 5, pp. 241, 242.

4. Mention a few more abominations. Proverbs 17:15; 20:10; 21:27. How does
an adulterer destroy his own soul? Proverbs 6:32,33.

"The soul [of an adulterer] becomes a blackened and desolate waste, the habitation
of evil spirits, and the 'cage of every unclean and hateful bird.''' -Patriarchs and Prophets,
p.458.

Wrong Attitude Toward Sin o Tuesday

April 24

5. With what arguments or thoughts do sinners often try to excuse their evil
ways? Zephaniah 1:12 (last part); Psalms 94:7; 14:1. What does the Spirit of
Prophecy say about those who seek to cloak or minimize sin?

"There are many false prophets in these days, to whom sin does not appear spe-
cially repulsive. They complain that the peace of the people is unnecessarily disturbed
by the reproofs and warnings of God's messengers. As for them, they lull the souls of
sinners into a fatal ease by their smooth and deceitful teachings."-Testimonies, Yol. 4, p.
185.

6. What attitude toward sin is characteristic of spiritual fools? Proverbs 10:23

(first part). How are we warned against such men?

"Those who seek to cloak sin and make it appear less aggravating to the mind of
the offender are doing the work of the false prophets and may expect the retributive
wrath of God to follow such a course. The Lord will never accommodate His ways to
the wishes of corrupt men." - Testimonies. yol. 4, p. 185.

Dangerous Seducers o Wednesday

April 25

7. To show that "misery loves company," how does Solomon portray some sin-
ners as seeking accomplices? Proverbs 1:14. According to the Spirit of Proph-
ecy, how can a professed Christian become a partaker in the sins of others?

"Christ's instruction as to the treatment of the erring repeats in more specific form
the teaching given to Israel through Moses. [Lev. 19:17 quoted.] That is, if one neglects
the duty Christ has enjoined, of trying to restore those who are in error and sin, he be-
comes a partaker in the sin. For evils that we might have checked, we are just as re-
sponsible as if we were guilty of the acts ourselves." - The Desire 0/ Ages, p. 441.

8. Who are the most dangerous seducers? 2 Corinthians 11:13,14. What will
happen, sooner or later, to those who lead others astray? Proverbs 26:27.

"Satan uses men and women as agents to solicit to sin and make it attractive. These
agents he faithfully educates to so disguise sin that he can more successfully destroy
souls and rob Christ of His glory. Satan is the great enemy of God and man. He trans-

-15 -
forms himself through his agents into angels of light. In the Scriptures he is called a
destroyer, an accuser of the brethren, a deceiver, a liar, a tormentor, and a murderer.
Satan has many in his employ, but is most successful when he can use professed Chris-
tians for his satanic work. And the greater their influence, the more elevated their posi-
tion, the more knowledge they profess of God and His service, the more successfully
can he use them. Whoever entices to sin is his agent."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 137.

Two Possibilities o Thursday

April 26

9. What will be the experience of those who-(a) cover their transgressions? (b)
confess and forsake their sins? Proverbs 28:9, 13. What will be our experience
when we, repentant sinners, fix our eyes upon the Lamb of God?

"Let the repenting sinner fix his eyes upon 'the Lamb of God, which taketh away
the sin of the world' (John 1:29); and by beholding, he becomes changed, His fear is
turned to joy, his doubts to hope. Gratitude springs up. The stony heart is broken. A
tide of love sweeps into the soul. Christ is in him a well of water springing up unto ever-
lasting life."- The Desire of Ages, p. 439.

10. What assurance has the Lord given us that, in due time, He will deal with all
evildoers? Proverbs 16:4, 5; 2 Peter 2:9.

"To sin, wherever found, 'our God is a consuming fire.' Heb. 12:29. In all who sub-
mit to His power the Spirit of God will consume sin. But if men cling to sin, they become
identified with it. Then the glory of God, which destroys sin, must destroy them."- The
Desire of Ages, p. 107.

Lesson 5 Sabbath, May 5, 1984

MARKS OF A FOOLISH MAN

In the Proverbs, pitiful remarks are made about the foolish man. It is necessary,
however, to distinguish between two kinds of fools-the common fool (a person
without much common sense or intelligence) and the spiritual fool (one who does
not have much spiritual sense or intelligence).

KEY TEXT: "Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool
than of him" (Proverbs 26:12).

Self-Confident/Wise in His Own Eyes o Sunday

April 29
1. What is often one of the basic qualities of a foolish person? Proverbs 28:26
(first part); 14:16 (second part). What admonition, directed to a self-confident
brother, is applicable to many professed followers of Christ today?

"I saw that from a child you have been self-confident, headstrong, and self-willed,
and have followed your own mind. You have an independent spirit, and it has been very
difficult for you to yield to anyone. When it was your duty to yield your way and your
wishes to others, you would carry matters out in your own rash way. You have felt that
you were fully competent to think and act for yourself independently. The truth of God
has been accepted and loved by you and has done much for you, but it has not wrought
all that transformation necessary for the perfection of Christian character."- Testimtlllies.
vol. 3, p. 305.

2. What is often characteristic of a foolish person? Proverbs 12: 15 (first part);

26: 12. How does Sister White admonish one who, in his own eyes, was wiser
than others?

"Your combativeness is large, and you stand braced, prepared to rebut everything
where you have a chance. You do not labor to see how near you can make your ideas
and views harmonize with those of others, but you stand all ready to differ if there is a
possible chance for you to do so. This injures your own soul, retards your spiritual ad-
vancement, and not only grieves and wounds those who would be your sincere friends,
but sometimes disgusts them, so that your society is not agreeable and pleasant, but
annoying. It is as natural as your breath for you to consider the views and opinions of
others inferior to yours. You often greatly err here, for you have not all that wisdom
and knowledge for which you give yourself credit." - Testimonies. vol. 2, p. 163.
Opposed to Counsel and Reproof/ o Monday
Disrespectful Toward Parents April 30

3. How do fools react to reproof? Proverbs 12:1 (second part); 1:{:1; 15:12. What
admonition comes to those who have this problem?

-17 -
"Satan will move upon minds that have been indulged, upon men who have always
had their own way, and anything presented to them in counselor reproof to change
their objectionable traits of character, is considered fault-finding, binding them, re-
straining them, that they cannot have liberty to act themselves." - The SDA 'Bible Cmnmen-
tary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 3, p. 1163.
"You feel that you need no reproof and counsel, and the language of your heart is:
'I am capable of judging, discriminating, and determining between right and wrong. I
will not have my rights infringed upon. No one shall dictate to me. I am capable of form-
ing my own plans of action. I am as good as anybody. God is with me and gives me suc-
cess in my efforts. Who has authority to interfere with me?' These words I heard you
utter, as your case was passing before me in vision, not to any person, but as if in con-
versation with yourself.... A thorough conversion alone will do the work necessary
to be done in your case."- Testimonies. vol. 3. p. 307.

4. How does a foolish person treat his parents? Proverbs 15:5 (first part). 20
(second part); 17:25.

Hot- Tempered, Contentious/Prone to Anger and Folly o Tuesday

May 1
5. What tendency does a fool show when in the presence of contention? Proverbs
18:6; 20:3. How did Sister White admonish a hot-tempered couple?

"Brother and Sister G, both of you need to watch your words; for just as surely as
there is not a sentinel placed over your thoughts and actions, you will discourage each
other and make it a sure case that neither of you can be saved. Both of you need to guard
against a hasty spirit, which prompts hasty words and actions. Resentment, which is
indulged because you think you have been misused, is the spirit of Satan and leads to
great moral evil. When you are controlled by a hasty spirit you deprive your reason, for
the time, of the power of regulating your words and your conduct, while you make your-
selves responsible for all the evil consequences. That which is done in haste and anger
is not excusable. The action is bad. You may, by a single word spoken in haste and pas-
sion, leave a sting in the hearts of friends which may never be forgotten." - TestimlJlzies.
vol. 4, pp. 242, 243.

6. How does a foolish person feel when he has a chance to practice his follies?
Proverbs 15:21 (first part). Give an example mentioning one of the most seri-
ous follies. Proverbs 10:18 (second part). How dangerous is it to be near such
a person? Proverbs 17:12.

Always Ready to Speak o Wednesday

May 2
7. What does the Bible say of those who are too eager to express their opinion?
Proverbs 18:2 (RSV), 13; 29: 11 (first part), 20.

8. How does a foolish person often use the talent of speech? Ecclesiastes 5:3
(second part), 10:14; Proverbs 12:23 (second part). What do sensible people
generally think of a noisy person? Proverbs 9:13. What admonition, given to
a talkative lady, should we take to heart?

"You talk too much upon unimportant things. You gain no spiritual strength from
this. If the strength spent in talking were devoted to prayer, you would receive spiritual
strength and would make melody in your heart to God."- Testimonies. vol. 2. p. 435.

Extravagant/Addicted to Drinking o Thursday
May 3

9. What is a foolish man ready to do when there is money within his reach?
Proverbs 21:20.

10. What does the word of God say about those who are led astray by the liquor
habit? Proverbs 20:1. Describe the slave of this habit. Proverbs 23:29-35.

"Is not this description [Provo 23:29-35] true to life? Does it not represent to us
the experience of the poor, besotted drunkard, who is plunged in degradation and ruin
because he has put the bottle to his lips, and who says, 'I will seek it yet again'? The
curse has come upon such a soul through indulgence in evil, and Satan has control of
his being....
"The man who has formed the habit of drinking intoxicating liquor, is in a desper-
ate situation. He cannot be reasoned with, or persuaded to deny himself the indulgence.
His stomach and brain are diseased, his will power is weakened, and his appetite un-
controllable. The prince of the powers of darkness holds him in bondage that he has
no power to break. For the aid of such victims the liquor traffic should be stopped."-

THE HELPLESS FOOL

There are fools who react favorably to sound advice. But there are others who will
not listen and mend their ways. Those who prove to be helpless must be left alone.

Castle-Building and Nonsensical Talk o Sunday

May 6

1. Where do fools often have their eyes (or minds)? Proverbs 17:24. What does
the Spirit of Prophecy say about the castle-building habit of such people?

"Where there is no purpose, there is a disposition to indolence; but where there is

a sufficiently important object in view, all the powers of the mind will come into spon-
taneous activity. In order to make life a success, the thoughts must be steadily fixed
upon the object of life, and not left to wander off and be occupied with unimportant
things, or to be satisfied with idle musing, which is the fruit of shunning responsibility.
Castle-building depraves the mind."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 429.

2. How does Solomon express the fact that when you listen to a conversation be-
tween two fools you are listening to nothing but nonsense? Proverbs 15:2
(second part), 14 (second part). If fools could realize their true condition, how
would at least some of them act? Proverbs 17:28.

Self-Destruction o Monday
May 7

3. How does a man hurt himself by being foolish? Proverbs 14:8; 5:22, 23. What
illustration do we have (in Luke 12:19-21) of how a man can practice self-
deception, becoming a fool?

"Men may have boundless wealth; yet if they are not rich toward God, if they have
no interest to secure to themselves the heavenly treasure and divine wisdom, they are
counted fools by their Creator, and we leave them just where God leaves them."-Testi-
monies, vol. 3, pp. 154, 155.

4. How does a foolish man regard sin? Proverbs 14:9 (first part). Whereby will
he destroy himself? Proverbs 10:21 (second part); 18:7; 21:16. How does
Sister White explain the process of self-destruction?

"We want all to understand how the soul is destroyed. It is not that God sends out
a decree that man shall not be saved. He does not throw a darkness before the eyes

- 20-
which cannot be penetrated. But man at first resists a motion of the Spirit of God, and,
having once resisted, it is less difficult to do so the second time, less the third, and far
less the fourth. Then comes the harvest to be reaped from the seed of unbelief and re-
sistance. Oh what a harvest of sinful indulgences is preparing for the sickle!"- Testimonies.
vol. 5, p. 120.

Unwillingness to Change D Tuesday

May 8

5. What similitude does Solomon use to represent a fool repeating his foolish
actions? Proverbs 26: 11. How do we know that "fool" was often used in the
Old Testament as synonymous with "apostate"? Cf. Proverbs 26: 11 with 2
Peter 2:20-22; Matthew 23:17; Psalm 38:5.

"In the Old Testament the word 'fool' is used to designate an apostate, or one who
has abandoned himself to wickedness."-Thouii"hls From the Mount o/Btessinii". p. 57.

6. Why is it so difficult to convert an inveterate spiritual fool who is happy to be

the way he is? Proverbs 14: 14 (first part); Hebrews 6:4-6.

"God requires prompt and unquestioning obedience of His law; but men are asleep
or paralyzed by the deceptions of Satan, who suggests excuses and subterfuges, and
conquers their scruples, saying as he said to Eve in the garden: 'Ye shall not surely die.'
Disobedience not only hardens the heart and conscience of the guilty one, but it tends
to corrupt the faith of others. That which looked very wrong to them at first, gradually
loses this appearance by being constantly before them, till finally they question whether
it is really sin and unconsciously fall into the same error."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 146.

Unwillingness to Change (continued) D Wednesday

May 9

7. What does Solomon say about incorrigible fools? Proverbs 13: 19 (second
part); 27:22. When the truth is presented, why should we not insist too much
with such people? Matthew 7:6; Titus 3:10.

H. How careful should we be when we have to answer to a foolish person? Proverbs

26:4, 5. How does the wise man set forth the uselessness of arguing with a fool
who wants to be a fool? Proverbs 23:9; 29:9. What does the servant of the
Lord say?

"Without foundation men will make statements with all the positiveness of truth;
but it is of no use to argue with them concerning their spurious assertions. The best
way to deal with error is to present the truth, and leave wild ideas to die out for want
of notice. Contrasted with truth, the weakness of error is made apparent to every intel-
ligent mind. The more the erroneous assertions of opposers, and of those who rise up
among us to deceive souls, are repeated, the better the cause of error is served. The.
more publicity is given to the suggestions of Satan, the better pleased is his satanic
majesty; for unsanctified hearts will be prepared to receive the chaff that he provides
for them. We shall have to meet difficulties of this order even in the church. Men will
make a world of an atom and an atom of a world."-TestiJlwoies to Mil/isters. p. 165.

Companionship o Thursday
May 10

9. How does companionship affect us-(a) if we walk with wise people? (b) if we
walk with those who do not have much spiritual sense? Proverbs 13:20.

"All who are not decided followers of Christ are servants of Satan. In the unregen-
erate heart there is love of sin and a disposition to cherish and excuse it. In the renewed
heart there is hatred of sin and determined resistance against it. When Christians
choose the society of the ungodly and unbelieving, they expose themselves to tempta-
tion. Satan conceals himself from view and stealthily draws his deceptive covering
over their eyes. They cannot see that such company is calculated to do them harm;
and while all the time assimilating to the world in character, words, and actions, they
are becoming more and more blinded."-The Great Controversy, p, 508,

10. Therefore, what attitude should we take toward those who prove to be fools
(or apostates)? Proverbs 9:6; 14:7.

"Double-minded men and women are Satan's best allies. Whatever favorable opin-
ion they may have of themselves, they are dissemblers. All who are loyal to God and
the truth must stand firmly for the right because it is right. To yoke up with those who
are unconsecrated, and yet be loyal to the truth, is simply impossible. We cannot unite
with those who are serving themselves, who are working on worldly plans, and not lose
our connection with the heavenly Counselor. We may recover ourselves from the snare
of the enemy, but we are bruised and wounded, and our experience is dwarfed."-Thp

MARKS OF A WISE MAN

Solomon's description of a wise man emphasizes both common sense and spiritual
intelligence. A wise man is, above all, one who has heavenly wisdom as a result of
his communion with God.

KEY TEXT: "The wise shall inherit glory" (Proverbs 3:35).

Respectful to Principles o Sunday

May 13

1. In what words does Solomon refer to a wise man as a man of principles?

Proverbs 10:8, 9. What is the first step in the path to eternal life?

"The very first step in the path to life is to keep the mind stayed on God, to have
His fear continually before the eyes. A single departure from moral integrity blunts
the conscience, and opens the door to the next temptation. 'He that walketh uprightly
walketh surely; but he that perverteth his way shall be known.' [Provo 10:9.] We are
commanded to love God supremely, and our neighbor as ourselves; but the daily ex-
perience of life shows that this law is disregarded. Uprightness in deal and moral in-
tegrity will secure the favor of God, and make a man a blessing to himself and to soci-
ety; but amid the varied temptations that assail one whichever way he may turn, it is
impossible to keep a clear conscience and the approval of heaven without divine aid
and a principle to love honesty for the sake of the right." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.
White Commentsl, vol. 3, p. 1158.

2. In which direction does the path of a wise man lead? Proverbs 15:24; Colos-
sians 3:1,2.

"Temporal things are not to engage our whole attention, or engross our minds un-
til our thoughts are entirely of the earth and the earthly. We are to train, discipline,
and educate the mind so that we may think in a heavenly channel, that we may dwell
on things unseen and eternal, which will be discerned by spiritual vision. It is by seeing
Him who is invisible that we may obtain strength of mind and vigor of spirit."-TheSDA
Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments I, vol. 6, p. 1100.

Wise in the Use of the Talent of Speech D Monday

4. When a wise man has to speak, how does he honor God with his tongue?
Proverbs 12:18 (second part); 15:2 (first part), 7 (first part). How do con-
verted tongues pour forth health?

- 23-
"Some are seen to come forth from their daily communion with God clothed with
the meekness of Christ. Their words are not like a desolating hail, crushing everything
before it; they come forth sweetly from their lips. They scatter seeds of love and kind-
ness all along their path, and that all unconsciously, because Christ lives in their heart.
Their influence is felt more than it is seen."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments].

Slow to Anger o Tuesday

May 15

5. When a wise man is provoked, ~ow does he react? Proverbs 14:29; 19:11. •
What description should our characters meet before we are prepared for the
latter rain?

"When railing accusations and taunts more cruel than spears and arrows have
fallen upon you, the influence of the Spirit of God upon your heart has led you to speak
calmly, dispassionately. It was not in nature to do this. It was the fruit of the Spirit of
God. It was the grace of God which strengthened your faith amid all the heartsicknesses
of hope deferred. Grace fortified you for the warfare and hardships, and brought you
through conqueror. Grace taught you to pray, to love and trust, notwithstanding your
unfavorable surroundings."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 270.

6. What self-control does a wise man show? Proverbs 15:18 (second part). What
is true in our daily experience?

"You will doubtless meet with things that will ruffle your spirit and severely test
you; but self-control may be yours in the strength of Jesus. Solomon places the one
who controls himself above him who conquers in battle: 'He that is slow to anger is
better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.' "- Testi-
monies. vol. 4, p. 501.

servant.

"Sister White: The testimony I received yesterday I look upon as a well-merited

rebuke for which I feel truly thankful to you. I earnestly hope to be an overcomer. I am .
fully sensible of the magnitude of the work I have to do, yet I trust that by God's as-
sisting grace I shall be able to conquer."-Testimonies. vol. 2, p. 165.

part). What does a prudent man do when there is danger or reason for doubt?
Proverbs 22:3 (first part); 14: 15.

9. What advantage was promised to a wise servant over a foolish son? Proverbs
17:2.

- 24-
10. What advantage will the wise have over the fools especially at the second com·
ing of Christ? Proverbs 3:35. As the glory promised to the wise goes beyond
our life on earth, what vision should be very dear to us?

"His [God's] people have been permitted to look beyond the trials of the present to
the triumphs of the future, when, the warfare having been accomplished, the redeemed
will enter into possession of the promised land. These visions of future glory, scenes
pictured by the hand of God, should be dear to His church today, when the controversy
of the ages is rapidly closing and the promised blessings are soon to be realized in all
their fullness." -Prophets and Kings, p. 722.

DISHONEST MEN

There are those who think, or act as if they thought, that a light deviation from
truth, a little digression from the commandments of God, is not so sinful when
there is an outlook for financial gain. But "the Bible condemns in the strongest
terms all falsehood, false dealing, and dishonesty" (Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 311).

Proverbs 14:2 (secorid part). What retribution falls on such a person? Proverbs
12:8 (second part). How else must he suffer?

"God's plan is not to send messengers who will please and flatter sinners; He de-
livers no messages of peace to lull the unsanctified into carnal security. Instead, He
lays heavy burdens upon the conscience of the wrongdoer and pierces his soul with
sharp arrows of conviction. "-Prophets and Kings, p. 435.
"Against every evildoer God's law utters condemnation. He may disregard that
voice, he may seek to drown its warning, but in vain, It follows him. It makes itself
heard. It destroys his peace. If unheeded, it pursues him to the grave. It bears witness
against him at the judgment. A quenchless fire, it consumes at last soul and body."-
Education, pp. 144, 145.

2. How do the actions of a false-hearted man often work against himself? Proverbs
26:27. What similitude fits a false friend, a faithless companion, or a disloyal
church member? Proverbs 25:19.

Deceivers/Liars o Monday
May 21

3. What is said of a man who takes advantage of others? Proverbs 11:1 (first
part); 20:17; 21:6.

"Many plead that unless they are sharp, and watch to advantage themselves, they
will meet with loss. Their unscrupulous neighbors, who take selfish advantages, are
prospered; while they, although trying to deal strictly in accordance with Bible princi-
ples, are not so highly favored. Do these persons see the future? Or are their eyes too
dim to see, through the miasma-laden fogs of worldliness, that honor and integrity are
not rewarded in the coin of this world? Will God reward virtue with mere worldly suc-
cess? He has their names graven on the palms of His hands, as heirs to enduring honors,

-26 -
riches that are imperishable. What did that dishonest man gain by his worldly policy?
How high a price did he pay for his success? He has sacrificed his noble manhood, and
has started on the road that leads to perdition. He may be converted; he may see the
wickedness of his injustice to his fellowmen, and, as far as possible, make restitution;
but the scars of a wounded conscience will ever remain."- The SDA Bible Commenlary [E.G.
White Comments], vol. 3, p. 1158.
"Fraud in any business transaction is a grievous sin in God's sight; for the goods
men are handling belong to Him, and must be used to the glory of His name if men
would be pure and clean in His sight. The religion that carries in its hand the scant
measure and the deceitful balance is an abomination in the sight of God." -Ibid.. p. 1160.

4. In what words are liars condemned? Proverbs 12:22 (first part); 19:5. How
will all liars be punished? Revelation 21:8. What should we know about the
character of a person who is inclined to listen to mischievous tongues? Proverbs
17:4 (second part).

"Lying lips are an abomination to Him [God]. He declares that into the Holy City
'there shall in no wise enter ... anything that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh
abomination, or maketh a lie.' Revelation 21:27. Let truth telling be held with no loose
hand or uncertain grasp. Let it become a part of the life. Playing fast and loose with
truth, and dissembling to suit one's own selfish plans, means shipwreck of faith. 'Stand
therefore, having your loins girt about with truth.' Ephesians 6:14. He who utters un-
truths sells his soul in a cheap market. His falsehoods may seem to serve in emergen-
cies; he may thus seem to make business advancement that he could not gain by fair
dealing; but he finally reaches the place where he can trust no one. Himself a falsifier,
he has no confidence in the word of others." - The Acls of the Apostles, p. 76.

Double- Tongued D Tuesday

May 22

5. How does a double-tongued man talk? Give an example. Proverbs 20: 14. What
incident shows that the scribes and Pharisees were doubled-tongued men?
John 8:3-6.

"They [the scribes and Pharisees] had seized upon this opportunity to secure His
[Christ's] condemnation [of the terrorstricken woman], thinking that whatever decision
He might make, they would find occasion to accuse Him."- The Desire of Ages, p. 460.

6. How did Christ condemn double talk? Matthew 5:37.

"These words condemn all those meaningless phrases and expletives that border
on profanity. They condemn the deceptive compliments, the evasion of truth, the flat-
tering phrases, the exaggerations, the misrepresentations in trade, that are current in
society and in the business world. They teach that no one who tries to appear what he
is not, or whose words do not convey the real sentiment of his heart, can be called truth-
ful." - Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 68.

Hypocrites/Flatterers D Wednesday
May 23

7. How cautious should we be when we have to deal with hypocrites? Proverbs

26:24, 25. Mention a New Testament example where hypocrisy was punished
in connection with falsehood and fraud.

- 27-
"In the case of Ananias and Sapphira, the sin of fraud against God was speedily
punished. The same sin was often repeated in the after history of the church and is
committed by many in our time. But though it may not be attended by the visible mani-
festation of God's displeasure, it is no less heinous in His sight now than in the apostles'
time. The warning has been given; God has clearly manifested His abhorrence of this
sin; and all who give themselves up to hypocrisy and covetousness may be sure that
they are destroying their own souls." - The Acts of the Apostles. p. 76.

8. What does flattery carry with itself? Proverbs 29:5; 26:28 (second part). What
is the aftereffect of-(a) flattery? (b) rebuke? Proverbs 28:23. What is Satan's
purpose in using flattery?

"Flattery is a part of the world's policy, but it is no part of Christ's policy. Through
flattery poor human beings, full of frailty and infirmities, come to think that they are
efficient and worthy, and become puffed up in their fleshly mind. They become intoxi-
cated with the idea that they possess ability beyond what they do have, and their reli-
gious experience becomes unbalanced. Unless in the providence of God they shall be
turned from these deceptions, and become converted, and learn the ABC of religion
in the school of Christ, they will lose their souls." -Fundamentals a/Christian Education, p. 304.

Scorners/Empty Boasters D Thursday

May 24

9. What characteristics identify a scorner? Proverbs 15:12; 21:24; 14:6 (first

part). What do scorners cause among the brethren? Proverbs 22:10.

10. What comparison does Solomon employ in his description of a man who boasts
of his promises, which remain unfulfilled? Proverbs 25:14.

"It is a wicked pride that delights in the vanity of one's own works, that boasts of
one's excellent qualities, seeking to make others seem inferior in order to exalt self,
claiming more glory than the cold heart is willing to give to God."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p.
223.

THE WISE AND VIRTUOUS WOMAN

"Heavenly angels watch the careworn mother, noting the burdens she carries
day by day. Her name may not have been heard in the world, but it is written in
the Lamb's book of life."-The Ministry of Healing, p. 377.

KEY TEXT: "Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies"
(Proverbs 31:10).

A Gi/to/God D Sunday
May 27

1. What does a man receive from the Lord by marrying a good wife? What is
said concerning a good wife? Proverbs 19:14 (second part); 31:10.

2. What will she receive from her husband and her children? Proverbs 31:28.
What makes her especially praiseworthy? Proverbs 31:30 (second part); 1
Peter 3:3-5; 1 Timothy 5:14.

"There is a God above, and the light and glory from His throne rests upon the faith-
ful mother as she tries to educate her children to resist the influence of evil. No other
work can equal hers in importance. She has not, like the artist, to paint a form of beauty
upon canvas, nor, like the sculptor, to chisel it from marble. She has not, like the author,
to embody a noble thought in words of power, nor, like the musician, to express a beau-
tiful sentiment in melody. It is hers, with the help of God, to develop in a human soul
the likeness of the divine." - The Ministry of Healing, pp. 377, 378.

Qualities D Monday
May 28

3. What is one of the most important qualities of a virtuous woman? Proverbs

11:16 (first part); 31:25. What influence will such a woman exert upon others?

"Great is the work and mission of women, especially those who are wives and
mothers. They can be a blessing to all around them. They can have a powerful influ-
ence for good if they will let their light so shine that others may be led to glorify our
heavenly Father. Women may have a transforming influence if they will only consent
to yield their way and their will to God, and let Him control their mind, affections, and
being. They can have an influence which will tend to refine and elevate those with
whom they associate. But this class are generally unconscious of the power they pos-
sess. They exert an unconscious influence which seems to work out naturally from a
sanctified life, a renewed heart."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 465.

- 29-
4. What are some of the conditions and evidences that enable a husband to be-
lieve that his marriage has been a success? Proverbs 31: 11, 12,23, 31. What
does a virtuous woman do to the poor and the needy? Proverbs 31:20.

"God has assigned woman her mission; and if she, in her humble way, yet to the
best of her ability, makes a heaven of her home, faithfully and lovingly performing her
duties to her husband and children, continually seeking to let a holy light shine from
her useful, pure, and virtuous life to brighten all around her, she is doing the work left
her of the Master, and will hear from His divine lips the words: Well done, good and
faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord. These women who are doing with
ready willingness what their hands find to do, with cheerfulness of spirit aiding their
husbands to bear their burdens, and training their children for God, are missionaries
in the highest sense. They are engaged in an important branch of the great work to be
done on earth to prepare mortals for a higher life, and they will receive their reward."
- Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 465, 466.

Qualities (continued) o Tuesday

May 29

5. How is the diligence of a virtuous woman described? Proverbs 31:13,15,27.

What warning should open the eyes of young men who are contemplating
marriage?

"Young ladies will read novels, excusing themselves from active labor because
they are in delicate health.... These ladies are not Christians, for they transgress the
fifth commandment. They do not honor their parents. But the mother is the one who
is most to blame. She has indulged her daughters and excused them from bearing their
share of household duties, until work has become distasteful to them, and they love
and enjoy delicate idleness. They eat, and sleep, and read novels, and talk of the fash-
ions, while their lives are useless."- Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 151.

6. How does a virtuous woman use her talent of speech? Proverbs 31:26. What
evidence will show that we have the law of kindness upon our lips and the oil
of grace in our hearts?

"The Lord Jesus is our only helper. Through His grace we shall learn to cultivate
love, to educate ourselves to speak kindly and tenderly. Through His grace our cold,
harsh manners will be transformed. The law of kindness will be upon our lips, and those
who are under the precious influences of the Holy Spirit, will not feel that it is an evi-
dence of weakness to weep with those who weep, to rejoice with them that rejoice.
Weare to cultivate heavenly excellences of character. Weare to learn what it means
to have good-will toward all men, a sincere desire to be as sunshine and not as shadow
in the lives of others."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 3, p. 1164.

Timely Warning o Wednesday

May 30

7. What warning should be borne in mind by every young man who is contem-
plating marriage? Proverbs 31:30 (first part).

8. What comparison illustrates a woman's physical beauty without moral, spiri-

tual, and intellectual beauty? Proverbs 11:22. What mistake of Samson stands
as a warning to our young men? Judges 14:1-3.

- 30-
"How many are pursuing the same course as did Samson! How often marriages
are formed between the godly and the ungodly, because inclination governs in the
selection of husband or wife!" -Patriarchs and Prophets. p. 563.

Remarkable Differences o Thursday

May 31

9. What is said of-(a) a man who has a virtuous wife? (b) a man who has a wife
who acts shamefully? Proverbs 12:4. What is often realized by disappointed
husbands and wives when it is too late to change the situation?

"The underhand way in which courtships and marriages are carried on is the cause
of a great amount of misery, the full extent of which is known only to God. On this rock
thousands have made shipwreck of their souls." -Messages to Young People. p. 447.

10. What is the difference between a wise woman and a foolish woman in connec-
tion with the administration of the household? Proverbs 14:1. How important
is good home government?

"God is displeased with disorder, slackness, and a lack of thoroughness, in anyone.

These deficiencies are serious evils and tend to wean the affections of the husband
from the wife when the husband loves order, well-disciplined children, and a well-
regulated house. A wife and mother cannot make home agreeable and happy unless
she possesses a love for order, preserves her dignity, and has good government; there-
fore all who fail on these points should begin at once to educate themselves in this
direction and cultivate the very things wherein is their greatest lack. Discipline will
do much for those who are lacking in these essential qualifications."-Testimonies. vol. 2.

Lesson 10 Sabbath, June 9,1984

PEACE vs. STRIFE

"Satan is working to crowd himself in everywhere. He would put asunder very

friends. There are men who are ever talking and gossiping and bearing false wit-
ness, who sow the seeds of discord and engender strife. Heaven looks upon this
class as Satan's most efficient servants."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 607.

KEY TEXT: "A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends"
(Proverbs 16:28).
One of the Main Causes of Strife o Sunday
June 3
1. What is one of the main causes of strife? Proverbs 13: 10; 16:28; 28:25 (first
part).
"Passionate words sow seeds that produce a bad crop which no one will care to
gamer. Our own words have an effect upon our character, but they act still more power-
fully upon the characters of others. The infinite God alone can measure the mischief
that is done by careless words. These words fall from our lips, and we do not perhaps
mean any harm; yet they are the index of our inward thoughts, and work on the side of
evil. What unhappiness has been produced by the speaking of thoughtless, unkind
words in the family circle! Harsh words rankle in the mind, it may be for years, and
never lose their sting. As professed Christians, we should consider the influence our
words have upon those with whom we come into association, whether they are believers
or unbelievers. Our words are watched, and mischief is done by thoughtless utterances.
No after association with believers or unbelievers will wholly counteract the unfavor-
able influence of thoughtless, foolish words. Our words evidence the manner of food
upon which the soul feeds." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 3, pp. 1159,
1160.

2. Explain how an answer can work like a two-edged sword. Proverbs 15:1. De-
scribe the contrasted procedures of a wrathful man and a peaceful man.
Proverbs 15:18.

"The voice and tongue are gifts from God, and if rightly used, they are a power
for God. Words mean very much. They may express love, devotion, praise, melody to
God, or hatred and revenge. Words reveal the sentiments of the heart. They may be a
savor of life unto life or of death unto death. The tongue is a world of blessing, or a
world of iniquity."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 3, p. 1159.
The Quick- Tempered Ones o Monday
June 4
3. Under what symbol is the conduct of a quarrelsome man described? Proverbs
26:21. What warning is for professed Christians who are quick-tempered?

- 32-
"The greatest insult we can inflict upon Him [Christ], is to pretend to be His dis-
ciples while manifesting the spirit of Satan in our words, our dispositions and our ac-
tions. It does not behoove those from whom Jesus has so much to bear, in their failings
and perversity, to be ever mindful of slights and real or imaginary offense. And yet
there are those who are ever suspecting the motives of others about them. They see
offense and slights where no such thing was intended. All this is Satan's work in the
human heart."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 3, p. 1160.

4. How is the quarrelsome wife criticized? Proverbs 21:9, 19; 27:15.

Putting an End to Contention o Tuesday

June 5

5. What is the biblical formula for putting an end to strife? Proverbs 26:20.

"If they [the talebearers] would spend half the energy and zeal that is given to this
unholy work in examining their own hearts, they would find so much to do to cleanse
their souls from impurity that they would have no time or disposition to criticize their
brethren, and they would not fall under the power of this temptation. The door of the
mind should be closed against 'they say' or 'I have heard.' Why should we not, instead
of allowing jealousy or evil-surmising to come into our hearts, go to our brethren, and,
after frankly but kindly setting before them the things we have heard detrimental to
their character and influence, pray with and for them? While we cannot love and fellow-
ship those who are the bitter enemies of Christ, we should cultivate that spirit of meek-
ness and love that characterized our Master,-a love that thinketh no evil and is not
easily provoked."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 3, p. 1163.

6. What advice should we follow concerning those who are cantankerous?

Proverbs 22:24, 26.

Putting and End to Contention (continued) o Wednesday

June 6

7. What steps must sometimes be taken for the sake of peace? Proverbs 22: 10.
What appeal in behalf of peace and harmony is directed to us?

"Do we expect to meet our brethren in heaven? If we can live with them here in
peace and harmony we could live with them there. But how could we live with them in
heaven if we cannot live with them here without continued contention and strife? Those
who are following a course of action that separates them from their brethren and brings
in discord and dissension, need a thorough conversion. Our hearts must be melted
and subdued by the love of Christ. We must cherish the love that He showed in dying
for us on the cross of Calvary. We need to draw closer and closer to the Saviour. We
should be much in prayer, and we must learn to exercise faith. We must be more tender-
hearted, more pitiful and courteous. We shall pass through this world but once. Shall
we not strive to leave on those with whom we associate the impress of the character
of Christ?"- Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 193.

8. What happens if the wrongful actions of "a man of great wrath" are over-
looked by the church? Proverbs 19:19.

- 33-
Self-Control D Thursday
June 7

9. What is said of a man who shows self-control in face of provocation? Proverbs

16:32.

"The heart filled with that love which thinketh no evil will not be on the watch to
notice discourtesies and grievances of which he may be the object. The will of God is
that His love shall close the eyes, the ears and the heart to all such provocations and to
all the suggestions with which Satan would fill them. There is a noble majesty in the
silence of the one exposed to evil-surmising or outrage. To be master of one's spirit is
to be stronger than kings or conquerors. A Christian leads one to think of Christ. He
will be affable, kind, patient, humble and yet courageous and firm in vindicating the
truth and the name of Christ."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 3. p. 1160.

10. How does a peaceful man face offense? Proverbs 17:9 (first part); 19:11.

"We must give others an example of not stopping at every trifling offense in order
to vindicate our rights. We may expect that false reports will circulate about us; but if
we follow a straight course, if we remain indifferent to these things, others will also
be indifferent. Let us leave to God the care of our reputation. And thus, like sons and
daughters of God, we shall show that we have self-control. We shall show that we are
led by the Spirit of God, and that we are slow to anger. Slander can be lived down by
our manner of living; it is not lived down by words of indignation. Let our great anxiety
be to act in the fear of God, and show by our conduct that these reports are false. No
one can injure our character as much as ourselves. It is the weak trees and the tottering
houses that need to be constantly propped. When we show ourselves so anxious to
protect our reputation against attacks from the outside, we give the impression that it
is not blameless before God, and that it needs therefore to be continually bolstered
up."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 3. pp. 1160. 1161.

Lesson 11 Sabbath, June 16, 1984

THE WAYS OF THE WICKED

It has been verified in biology that any creature, whether an animal or a human
being, that lives in darkness will lose the power of vision. It is the same in the spir-
itual realm. Whoever turns away from the light will be walking in darkness, not
knowing where he is going.

KEY TEXT: "The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they
stumble" (Proverbs 4:19).

Financially Crooked o Sunday

June 10

1. What does a wicked man often do to bend the ways of justice? Proverbs 17:23.
How does a wicked person show his greed for unjust gain? Psalm 37:21 (first
part). How does the Spirit of Prophecy describe the conditions prevalent in
the world today?

"The corruption that prevails [in the cities] is beyond the power of the human pen
to describe. Every day brings fresh revelations of political strife, bribery, and fraud;
every day brings its heartsickening record of violence and lawlessness, of indifference
to human suffering; of brutal, fiendish destruction of human life."- Testimonies. vol. 9, p.
89.

2. What is often the consequence of the unjust gain pursued by the wicked?
Proverbs 15:27 (first part); 21:7; 28:20 (second part).

Oppressive and Unsympathetic Toward the Poor o Monday

June 11

3. What attitude is characteristic of the wicked in connection with the poor?

Proverbs 14:31 (first part); 17:5 (first part); James 5:4-6.

"The intense passion for money getting, the thirst for display, the luxury and ex-
travagance-all are forces that, with the great mass of mankind, are turning the mind
from life's true purpose. They are opening the door to a thousand evils. Many, absorbed
in their interest in worldly treasures, become insensible to the claims of God and the
needs of their fellow men. They regard their wealth as a means of glorifying self.
They add house to house and land to land; they fill their homes with luxury, while all
about them are human beings in misery and crime, in disease and death.
"By every species of oppression and extortion, men are piling up colossal fortunes,
while the cries of starving humanity are coming up before God. There are multitudes
struggling with poverty, compelled to labor hard for small wages, unable to secure
the barest necessities of life. Toil and deprivation, with no hope of better things, make

- 35-
their burden heavy. When pain and sickness are added, the burden is almost unbear-
able. Careworn and oppressed, they know not where to turn for relief."- Testimonies. vol.
9. p. 90.

4. What should those bear in mind who oppress the poor to increase their own
wealth? Proverbs 22:16; James 5:1-3; Ezekiel 7:19.

Having a Poisonous Tongue o Tuesday

June 12

5. How does a wicked man use his tongue? How does he often manifest his inten-
tions? Proverbs 6:12-14.

6. To what is an evildoer generally inclined to listen? Proverbs 17:4 (first part).

By acting as a talebearer, what damage does a wicked person cause? Proverbs
26:22; 17:9 (second part).

"Floating rumors are frequently the destroyers of unity among brethren. There
are some who watch with open mind and ears to catch flying scandal. They gather up
little incidents which may be trifling in themselves, but which are repeated and exag-
gerated until a man is made an offender for a word. Their motto seems to be, 'Report,
and we will report it.' These talebearers are doing the devil's work with surprising
fidelity, little knowing how offensive their course is to God." - The SDA Bible Commentary
[E.G. White Comments]. vol. 3, p. 1163.

Mentally and Morally Perverted o Wednesday

June 13

7. What does the wise man say about the thoughts and plans of the wicked?
Proverbs 15:26 (first part); 12:21 (second part).

8. While the commandment keepers strive against the wicked, what attitude
can be seen in those who have forsaken the law? Proverbs 24:24; 28:4. What
parallel can be drawn between the days of Noah and our days?

"In the antediluvian world human agencies brought in all manner of devisings and
ingenious practices to make of no effect the law of Jehovah. They cast aside His author-
ity because it interfered with their schemes. As in the days before the Flood, so now the
time is right upon us when the Lord must reveal His omnipotent power. In this time
of prevailing iniquity we may know that the last great crisis is at hand. When defiance
against God's law is almost universal, when His people are oppressed and afflicted by
their fellow men, the Lord will interpose."- Testimonies, vol. 9. p. 92.

Involved in Darkness and Deception o Thursday

June 14

9. What is said about the way of the wicked? Proverbs 4:19; Isaiah 59:4-8; 1
John 2:11. Since darkness is preferred to light in this age, what warning is
directed to the true followers of Christ?

"In this degenerate age, error and darkness are preferred rather than light and
truth. The works of many of Christ's professed followers will not bear the test when
examined by the light that now shines upon them. For this cause, many do not come

- 36-
to the light lest it shall be made manifest that their works are not wrought in God. Light
discovers, makes manifest, the evil hidden under darkness. Men of the world and men
who are Christ's servants indeed may be alike in outward appearance; but they are
servants of two masters whose interests are in decided opposition to each other. The
world does not understand or discern the difference; but there is an immense distance,
a vast separation, between them.
"Says Christ: 'Ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world.'
The true followers of Christ cannot enjoy the friendship of the world and at the same
time have their life hid with Christ." - Testimonies. vol. 2, pp. 689, 690.

10. What characterizes the actions of the wicked? Proverbs 11:18 (first part);
12:5 (second part); 2 Timothy 3:13. How is Satan's suggestion to our first
parents being repeated today?

"Satan represented to the holy pair that they would be gainers by breaking the law
of God. Do we not today hear similar reasoning? Many talk of the narrowness of those
who obey God's commandments, while they themselves claim to have broader ideas
and to enjoy greater liberty. What is this but an echo of the voice from Eden, 'In the
day ye eat thereof-transgress the divine requirement-'ye shall be as gods'? Satan
claimed to have received great good by eating of the forbidden fruit, but he did not let
it appear that by transgression he had become an outcast from heaven. Though he had
found sin to result in infinite loss, he concealed his own misery in order to draw others
into the same position. So now the transgressor seeks to disguise his true character;
he may claim to be holy; but his exalted profession only makes him the more dangerous
as a deceiver. He is on the side of Satan, trampling upon the law of God, and leading
others to do the same, to their eternal ruin." -Patriarchs and Prophets. p. 55.

Recapitulation o Friday
June 15

a. Whether in the natural world or in the spiritual domain, what causes people
to lose their eyesight?

Lesson 12 Sabbath, June 23,1984

THE WAYS OF THE RIGHTEOUS

"Sinful men can become righteous only as they have faith in God and maintain a
vital connection with Him" (The Desire of Ages, p. 310), conforming their will to the
revealed will of God. Then, if they have fellowship with Him, their ways will be the
ways of understanding, of holiness, and of uprightness (Isaiah 40: 14; 35:8; 26:7).

KEY TEXT: "The thoughts of the righteous are right" (Proverbs 12:5).
Right Thoughts and Principles D Sunday
June 17
1. What thoughts occupy the minds of the righteous? Proverbs 11:23 (first part);
12:5 (first part). Which is the only power that is able to make our thoughts
flow in the right channel?

"It is the grace of God that you need in order that your thoughts may be disciplined
to flow in the right channel, that the words you utter may be right words, and that your
passions and appetites may be subject to the control of reason, and the tongue be bri-
dled against levity and unhallowed censure and faultfinding." - Testimonies. vol. 4, p. 235.
"The power of the truth should be sufficient to sustain and console in every adver-
sity. It is in enabling its possessor to triumph over affliction that the religion of Christ
reveals its true value. It brings the appetites, the passions, and the emotions under
the control of reason and conscience, and disciplines the thoughts to flow in a healthful
channel." -Ibid., vol. 5, p. 314.
2. To what do the efforts of the righteous lead? Proverbs 10: 16 (first part). How
important is moral integrity? Proverbs 10:9; 28:10 (second part).

Uprightness in deal and moral in-
tegrity will secure the favor of God, and make a man a blessing to himself and to soci-
ety; but amid the varied temptations that assail one whichever way he may turn, it is
impossible to keep a clear conscience and the approval of heaven without divine aid
and a principle to love honesty for the sake of the right."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.
White Comments], vol. 3, p. 1158.

Sanctified Lips D Monday

June 18
3. While the mouth of the wicked causes destruction, what blessings come from
the lips of the righteous? Proverbs 10:11,20,21,31,32 (first part of each
verse).

- 38-
"The Lord will help every one of us where we need help the most in the grand work
of overcoming and conquering self. Let the law of kindness be upon your lips and the
oil of grace in your heart. This will produce wonderful results. You will be tender, sym-
pathetic, courteous. You need all these graces. The Holy Spirit must be received and
brought into your character; then it will be as holy fire, giving forth incense which will
rise up to God, not from lips that condemn, but as a healer of the souls of men. Your
countenance will express the image of the divine. No sharp, critical, blunt, or severe
words should be spoken. This is common fire, and must be left out of all our councils
and intercourse with our brethren."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 3,
p. 1164.

4. What does a righteous man do before he can give an answer? Proverbs 15:28
(first part). What is especially hateful to him? Proverbs 13:5 (first part). What
will show that the Holy Spirit is using our lips?

"God requires every soul in His service to kindle their censers from the coals of
sacred fire. The common, severe, harsh words that come from your lips so readily must
be withheld, and the Spirit of God speak through the human agent. By beholding the
character of Christ you will become changed into His likeness. The grace of Christ
alone can change your heart and then you will reflect the image of the Lord Jesus. God
calls upon us to be like Him,-pure, holy, and undefiled. We are to bear the divine im-
age."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 3, p. 1164.
Sympathetic Toward the Poor D Tuesday
June 19
5. How does a righteous man regard the needs of the poor? Proverbs 29:7 (first
part); 21:26 (second part); 3:27, 28. What admonition comes to us from the
pen of inspiration?

"God requires that His people should not allow the poor and afflicted to be op-
pressed. If they break every yoke and release the oppressed, and are unselfish and
kindly considerate of the needy, then shall the blessings promised be theirs."- Testi-
monies, vol. 3, p. 519.
"He will not hearken to the prayer of His people while the orphan, the fatherless,
the lame, the blind, and the sick are neglected among them."-Ibid., p. 518.
"In placing among them the helpless and the poor, to be dependent upon their
care, Christ tests His professed followers." - The Ministry of Healing, p. 205.
6. What promise is given to those who are kind to the poor? Proverbs 10:3 (first
part); 19: 17; 22:9; 28:27. How does David confirm this promise? Psalm 37:
25.

Merciful Toward the Brute Creatures D Wednesday

June 20
7. How does a righteous man handle his animals? Proverbs 12:10 (first part).
What does the Spirit of Prophecy say about the Balaam-like disposition to
cause pain to the brute creation?

"Balaam had given evidence of the spirit that controlled him, by his treatment of
his beast. 'A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of
the wicked are crue!.' Proverbs 12:10. Few realize as they should the sinfulness of
abusing animals or leaving them to suffer from neglect. He who created man made

- 39-
the lower animals also, and 'His tender mercies are over all His works.' Psalm 145:9.
The animals were created to serve man, but he has no right to cause them pain by harsh
treatment or cruel exaction." -Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 442, 443.

8. What duty has God enjoined upon us in view of the cruelty and suffering that
the wicked have imposed on the brute creation? Romans 8:19-22.

"It is because of man's sin that 'the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain
together.' Romans 8:22. Suffering and death were thus entailed, not only upon the hu-
man race, but upon the animals. Surely, then, it becomes man to seek to lighten, instead
of increasing, the weight of suffering which his transgression has brought upon God's
creatures. He who will abuse animals because he has them in his power is both a coward
and a tyrant. A disposition to cause pain, whether to our fellow men or to the brute
creation, is satanic. Many do not realize that their cruelty will ever be known, because
the poor dumb animals cannot reveal it. But could the eyes of these men be opened, as
were those of Balaam, they would see an angel of God standing as a witness, to testify
against them in the courts above." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 443.

Established on an Eternal Foundation o Thursday

June 21

9. In what sense are the righteous established on an everlasting foundation?

Proverbs 10:25 (second part); Matthew 7:24; 1 John 2:17.

"To those who believe, Christ is a sure foundation. Upon this living stone, Jews
and Gentiles alike may build. It is broad enough for all and strong enough to sustain
the weight and burden of the whole world." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 175.
"We build on Christ by obeying His word." -Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 149.
"The great principles of the law, of the very nature of God, are embodied in the
words of Christ on the mount. Whoever builds upon them is building upon Christ, the
Rock of Ages." -Ibid., pp. 148, 149.
"But every building erected on other foundation than God's word will fall." -Ibid.,
p.150.

10. What promise belongs to aU who are established on this foundation? Proverbs
3:33 (second part); 14:11 (second part); 12:7 (second part).

COUNSELS,
ADMONITIONS, AND PROMISES

"The apostle Paul declares that it is impossible for the children of God to unite
with worldlings: 'Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers.' This does
not refer to marriage alone; any intimate relation of confidence and copartnership
with those who have no love for God or the truth is a snare."-Testimonies, vol. 5,
p.13.

KEY TEXT: "Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil
men" (Proverbs 4:14).
Dangerous Association o Sunday
June 24
1. How do true Christians and worldlings regard each other's ways? Proverbs
29:27.

"While God moves upon the minds of His servants, Satan works through the chil-
dren of disobedience. There is no concord between Christ and Belial. The two cannot
harmonize."- Testimonies. vol. 5, p. 364.
"If you go forward toward heaven, the world will rub hard against you. At every
step you will have to urge your way against Satan and his evil angels, and against all
who transgress God's law. Earthly authorities will interpose. You will meet tribulations,
bruising of the spirit, hard speeches, ridicule, persecutions. Men will require your con-
formity to laws and customs that would render you disloyal to God. Here is where God's
people find the cross in the way to life."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments],
vol. 6, p. 1102.

2. Therefore, what Bible rule should we bear in mind when tempted to associate
with the wicked? Proverbs 4: 14, 15; 2 Corinthians 6: 17, 18.

"Those who follow the Lord are to be firm and straightforward in obeying His
directions. Any deviation to follow human devising or planning disqualifies them for
being trustworthy. Even if they have to walk as did Enoch,-with God alone,-his chil-
dren must separate from those who do not obey Him, who show that they are not in
vital connection with Him."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 2, p. 1037.
Dangerous Association (continued) o Monday
June 25
3. What is most likely to happen when the righteous keep company with the
wicked? Proverbs 28:10 (first part); 1 Corinthians 15:33. What warning
should we take from the life of Solomon?

- 42-
"Solomon, who at the dedication of the temple had solemnly charged the people,
'Let your heart therefore be perfect with the Lord our God' (1 Kings 8:61), chose his
own way, and in his heart separated from God. The mind that was once given to God
and inspired of Him to write the most precious words of wisdom (the book of Proverbs),
-truths which are immortalized,-that noble mind, through evil associations and yield-
ing to temptation, became inefficient, weak in moral power, and Solomon dishonored
himself, dishonored Israel, and dishonored God."- Testimonies. vol. 7, pp. 218, 219.
4. What similitude applies to a righteous man who discredits himself by giving
way before the wicked? Proverbs 25:26. How are we warned against having
fellowship with the works and workers of darkness? Ephesians 5: 11.

"The children of the light and of the day are not to gather about them the shades
of night and darkness which encompass the workers of iniquity. On the contrary, they
are to stand faithfully at their post of duty as light bearers, gathering light from God
to shed upon those in darkness. The Lord requires His people to maintain their integ-
rity, touching not-that is, imitating not-the practices of the ungodly."-Testimonies.
vol. 5, pp. 13, 14.
"You are exhorted to touch not the unclean thing; for in touching this, you will
yourself become unclean. It is impossible for you to unite with those who are corrupt,
and still remain pure. 'What fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and
what communion hath light with darkness? and what concord hath Christ with Belial?'
God and Christ and the heavenly host would have man know that if he unites with the
corrupt, he will become corrupt." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 6, p.
1102.

The Fruit of the Spirit o Tuesday

June 26
5. What is the fruit of the righteous? Proverbs 11:30; 12:12 (second part); Gala-
tians 5:22, 23. What enables them to bear this fruit?

"The influence of the Holy Spirit is the life of Christ in the soul. We do not see
Christ and speak to Him, but His Holy Spirit is just as near us in one place as in another.
It works in and through every one who receives Christ. Those who know the indwelling
of the Spirit reveal the fruits of the Spirit-love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness,
goodness, faith." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1112.
6. How will a righteous man's children be influenced by his actions? Proverbs
20:7. What admonition should we heed in this connection? 1 Corinthians 11: 1.

"'None of us liveth to himself.' The character will manifest itself. The looks, the
tone of the voice, the actions,-all have their influence in making or marring the hap-
piness of the domestic circle. They are molding the temper and character of the chil-
dren; they are im,piring or tending to destroy confidence and love. All are made either
better or worse, happy or miserable, by these influences. We owe our families the
knowledge of the word brought into practical life. All that it is possible for us to be to
purify, enlighten, comfort, and encourage those connected with us in family relation
should be dOne."-Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 50.
Recompense on Earth o Wednesday
June 27
7. In view of dreaded calamities and anticipated blessings, what is often experi-
enced by-(a) the wicked? (b) the righteous? Proverbs 10:24.

- 43-
8. Where does the reward of the righteous begin? Proverbs 11:31; Luke 18:28-
30.

"While the people are looking for earthly good, Jesus points them to a heavenly
reward. But He does not place it all in the future life; it begins here. The Lord appeared
of old time to Abraham and said, 'J am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.'
Genesis 15:1. This is the reward of all who follow Christ."-Thoughts From the Mount of Bless-
ing, p. 34.

Final Reward D Thursday

June 28

9. What comfort does the righteous man have in his deathbed? Proverbs 14:32
(second part). Give two examples: Job 19:25-27; 2 Timothy 4:6-8.

10. While the name of the wicked cause disgust, what distinction is conferred on
the memory of the righteous? Proverbs 10:7; Psalm 112:6. What inheritance
is reserved for the righteous? 2 Peter 3:13; Proverbs 2:21, 22; 10:30.

"There [in the home that Jesus is preparing for the redeemed] their companions
will not be the vile of earth, liars, idolators, the impure, and unbelieving; but they will
associate with those who have overcome Satan and through divine grace have formed
perfect characters. Every sinful tendency, every imperfection, that afflicts them here
has been removed by the blood of Christ, and the excellence and brightness of His
glory, far exceeding the brightness of the sun, is imparted to them. And the moral
beauty, the perfection of His character, shines through them, in worth far exceeding
this outward splendor. They are without fault before the great white throne, sharing
the dignity and the privileges of the angels." -Steps to Christ, p. 126.
