FOREWORD

Evangelism has ever been the major avenue and process of

making known the gospel of the kingdom of God. It involves
teaching and understanding. Adam repented, reformed, and, by
example and teaching, he restored the true faith during his long
life. Other individuals (Seth, Enoch, Noah, etc.) are recorded as
having steadfastly taught and effectively impressed souls with
the conviction of sin.
Resistance to the truth demoralized intelligent human beings
for approximately 1,700 years, but the word of God has remained
the safeguard until the present time. Further chosen individuals
are listed, who made known the present truth for their genera-
tion. Christ Himself was responsible for the numberless souls
who were converted.
No time was more difficult in evangelism than that in which
Christ and His apostles worked, but never before or after has
such infallible truth been taught as by the Master Teacher. This
quarterly briefly includes methods and means used by Christ.
"These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet
with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in
the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concern-
ing me." Luke 24:44.
In personal study Sabbath school members are not restricted
to the questions and answers brought forth in the quarterly. They
should rather search the Bible and the Testimonies, at every op-
portunity, for more light on the subjects discussed in these
lessons. In this way they can increase their ability and become ef-
fective teachers.

Argentina is a republic of southern South America, where over 26 mil-
lion people live in an area of 2,294,015 square kilometers. The official
language is Spanish. The predominant religion is Roman Catholicism. The
most important of all human rights-religious freedom-is ensured by the
constitution.
The work of the SDA Reform Movement, with churches and groups in
several places, has been established for many years. The Argentinean Field
Conference is part of the Southern South American Union.
For many years our brethren in that country had felt the need for print-
ing facilities. So, in spite of their limited financial possibilities, they started a
humble print shop in Ciudadela, Buenos Aires, in 1967. Many books, maga-
zines, and pamphlets have since been put out by their little printing house,
not only for distribution in Argentina but also for the development of the
work in other Spanish-speaking countries. Our people in these countries put
much emphasis on the following instructions:
"I have been repeatedly shown that our presses should now be constant-
ly employed in publishing light and truth."- Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 65.
"The book work should be the means of quickly giving the sacred light
of present truth to the world."-Ibid., p. 69.
"In a large degree through our publishing houses is to be accomplished
the work of that other angel who comes down from heaven with great power
and who lightens the earth with his glory."-Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 140.
The second-hand equipment purchased in 1967 must now be replaced by
more modern machines which will ensure more efficient production. On top
of that, a larger building is also needed. A bigger plot of land for the new
print shop has already been secured, but help from our brethren and friends
in other countries will be required before the project in Argentina can
materialize.
Our people around the world are, therefore, requested to think and pray
about the appeal of our Argentinean brethren, and come prepared to make
an extra sacrifice on the last Sabbath of this quarter. May God bless all
givers!

Lesson 1 Sabbath, April 2, 1988

THE FORERUNNER OF JESUS

'John was sent in the spirit and power of Elijah to prepare the way for Jesus.
Those who rejected the testimony of John were not benefited by the
teachings of Jesus. Their opposition to the message that foretold His coming
placed them where they could not readily receive the strongest evidence that
He was the Messiah."-Early Writings, p. 259.

KEY TEXT: "And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn
the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the
wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
Luke 1:17.

D Sunday
THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN AT HAND March 27

1. What was the situation of the world at the time of Christ's first advent? How
only could it be changed? John 3:16.

"The earth was dark through misapprehension of God. That the gloomy shadows
might be lightened, that the world might be brought back to God, Satan's deceptive
power was to be broken. This could not be done by force. The exercise of force is con-
trary to the principles of God's government; He desires only the service of love; and
love cannot be commanded; it cannot be won by force or authority. Only by love is
love awakened. To know God is to love Him; His character must be manifested in
contrast to the character of Satan. This work only one Being in all the universe could
do. Only He who knew the height and depth of the love of God could make it known.
Upon the world's dark night the Sun of Righteousness must rise, 'with healing in His
wings.' Malachi 4:2."-The Desire of Ages, p. 22.

2. What was the objective of the coming of Christ to live among men? John
14:8, 9; 17:26.

"By coming to dwell with us, Jesus was to reveal God both to men and to angels.
He was the Word of God-God's thought made audible. In His prayer for His disci-
ples He says, 'I have declared unto them Thy name'-'merciful and gracious, long-
suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth'-'that the love wherewith Thou hast
loved Me may be in them, and I in them.' But not alone for His earthborn children
was this revelation given. Our little world is the lesson book of the universe. God's
wonderful purpose of grace, the mystery of redeeming love, is the theme into

-5-
which 'angels desire to look,' and it will be their study throughout endless ages. Both
the redeemed and the unfallen beings will find in the cross of Christ their science and
their song."-The Desire of Ages, pp. 19, 20.

o Monday
JOHN THE BAPTIST March 28

3. What prophecy was given concerning the forerunner of Jesus? Malachi 3:1;
Luke 1:17.

4. Who was chosen to "go before the face of the Lord" and prepare His ways?
Luke 7:24, 27.

"From among the faithful in Israel, who had long waited for the coming of the
Messiah, the forerunner of Christ arose. The aged priest Zacharias and his wife
Elisabeth were 'both righteous before God'; and in their quiet and holy lives the light
of faith shone out like a star amid the darkness of those evil days. To this godly pair
was given the promise of a son, who should 'go before the face of the Lord to prepare
His ways.' "-The Desire a/Ages. p. 97.

D Tuesday
THE PROPHETIC GIFT RESTORED March 29

5. What gift was restored at the beginning of the Christian era? Luke 1:67,
76-79.

"To the question of Zacharias, the angel said, 'I am Gabriel, that stand in the
presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to show thee these glad tidings.'
Five hundred years before, Gabriel had made known to Daniel the prophetic period
which was to extend to the coming of Christ. The knowledge that the end of this
period was near had moved Zacharias to pray for the Messiah's advent. Now the very
messenger through whom the prophecy was given had come to announce its fulfill-
ment."-The Desire of Ages, p. 98.

6. What preparation did John obtain for his mission? Luke 1:80; 3:2.

"John was to go forth as Jehovah's messenger, to bring to men the light of God.
He must give a new direction to their thoughts. He must impress them with the
holiness of God's requirements, and their need of His perfect righteousness. Such a
messenger must be holy. He must be a temple for the indwelling Spirit of God. In
order to fulfill his mission, he must have a sound physical constitution, and mental
and spiritual strength. Therefore it would be necessary for him to control the ap-
petites and passions. He must be able so to control all his powers that he could stand
among men as unmoved by surrounding circumstances as the rocks and mountains of
the wilderness."-The Desire of Ages, p. 100.
"In the natural order of things, the son of Zacharias would have been educated for
the priesthood. But the training of the rabbinical schools would have unfitted him for
his work. God did not send him to the teachers of theology to learn how to interpret
the Scriptures. He called him to the desert, that he might learn of nature and nature's
God."-lbid., p. 101.

AN IMPRESSIVE WARNING March 30

7. What was the authority of John's message? What did he say about the claims
of the Pharisees and Sadducees? Matthew 3:1-9.

"Amid discord and strife, a voice was heard from the wilderness, a voice startling
and stern, yet full of hope: 'Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.' With a
new, strange power it moved the people. Prophets had foretold the coming of Christ
as an event far in the future; but here was an announcement that it was at hand.
John's singular appearance carried the minds of his hearers back to the ancient seers.
In his manner and dress he resembled the prophet Elijah. With the spirit and power of
Elijah he denounced the national corruption, and rebuked the prevailing sins. His
words were plain, pointed, and convincing. Many believed him to be one of the proph-
ets risen from the dead. The whole nation was stirred. Multitudes flocked to the
wilderness."-The Desire of Ages, p. 104.

8. What classes of people asked John for direction? Who did some of them
believe that John the Baptist was? Luke 3:9-15.

"In the time of John the Baptist, Christ was about to appear as the revealer of the
character of God. His very presence would make manifest to men their sin. Only as
they were willing to be purged from sin could they enter into fellowship with Him.
Only the pure in heart could abide in His presence.
"Thus the Baptist declared God's message to Israel. Many gave heed to his in-
struction. Many sacrificed all in order to obey. Multitudes followed this new teacher
from place to place, and not a few cherished the hope that he might be the Messiah.
But as John saw the people turning to him, he sought every opportunity of directing
their faith to Him who was to come."-The Desire of Ages, p. 108.

o Thursday
THE REDEEMER RECOGNIZED March 31

9. How did John announce the coming of Jesus? Mark 1:5-8. What response
did John make when Christ asked for baptism? Matthew 3:14.

"When Jesus came to be baptized, John recognized in Him a purity of character

that he had never before perceived in any man. The very atmosphere of His presence
was holy and awe-inspiring. Among the multitudes that had gathered about him at the
Jordan, John had heard dark tales of crime, and had met souls bowed down with the
burden of myriad sins; but never had he come in contact with a human being from
whom there breathed an influence so divine."-The Desire of Ages, p. llO.

10. With what words did John introduce to the people the long-awaited Saviour
and Teacher? John 1:29-34.

"John had been deeply moved as he saw Jesus bowed as a suppliant, pleading
with tears for the approval of the Father. As the glory of God encircled Him, and the
voice from heaven was heard, John recognized the token which God had promised.
He knew that it was the world's Redeemer whom he had baptized. The Holy Spirit

-7-
rested upon him, and with outstretched hand pointing to Jesus, he cried, 'Behold the
Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.' "-The Desire of Ages, p. 112.

REVIEW AND THOUGHT QUESTIONS April 1

a. What gave Christ exclusive ability to make God known to the world?
b. From among what class of people in Israel did John the Baptist arise?
c. What are the names of the two men (father and son) through whom the gift of
prophecy was restored to the faithful remnant in Israel?
d. What was John the Baptist's message to Israel?
e. How was John able to recognize Jesus as the promised Redeemer? •

"There was a great work appointed for the prophetJohn,
but there was no school on the earth with which he could
connect. His learning must be obtained away from the
cities, in the wilderness. The Old Testament Scriptures,

God, and the nature which God had created, were to be his
study books. God was fitting John for his work of preparing
the way of the Lord. His food was simply locusts and wild
honey. The customs and practices of men were not to be the
education of this man. Worldly engrossment was to act no
part in the formation of his character."

Lesson 2 Sabbath, April 9, 1988

THE DEITY OF CHRIST

"Christ had not ceased to be God when He became man. Though He had
humbled Himself to humanity, the Godhead was still His own. Christ alone
could represent the Father to humanity, and this representation the disciples
had been privileged to behold for over three years." - The Desire of Ages, pp.
663,664.

KEY TEXT: "Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else
believe me for the very works' sake." John 14:11.

WHY CHRIST CAME April 3

1. What were the main purposes for which Christ came into the world?
a) to reveal God to the world: John 1:14; 17:6,26; 1 John 1:2; 4:9;
b) to seek and to save that which was lost: Luke 19:10;
c) to bring God and man together: John 1:51; Matthew 1:23; 1 Peter 3:18;
d) to bear the sins of mankind: Isaiah 53:6, 11; John 1:29; 1 John 3:5;
e) to die in our stead: Matthew 26:28; Acts 20:28; Hebrews 2:9;
f) to destroy the works of the devil: 1 John 3:8.

2. What evidence did Jesus present to prove His authority and relationship
with the Father? John 5:36,39-47.

"In every page, whether history, or precept, or prophecy, the Old Testament
Scriptures are irradiated with the glory of the Son of God. So far as it was of divine in-
stitution, the entire system of Judaism was a compacted prophecy of the gospel. To
Christ 'give all the prophets witness.' Acts 10:43. From the promise given to Adam,
down through the patriarchal line and the legal economy, heaven's glorious light
made plain the footsteps of the Redeemer. Seers beheld the Star of Bethlehem, the
Shiloh to come, as future things swept before them in mysterious procession. In every
sacrifice Christ's death was shown. In every cloud of incense His righteousness
ascended. By every jubilee trumpet His name was sounded. In the awful mystery of
the holy of holies His glory dwelt."-The Desire of Ages, pp. 211, 212.
D Monday
CHRIST'S IDENTITY AND POSITION MISUNDERSTOOD April 4

3. When Jesus identified Himself to Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, what title
did He use? John 3:16,17.

-9-
"[T]he Creator of worlds, He in whom was the fulness of the Godhead bodily, was
manifest in the helpless babe in the manger. Far higher than any of the angels, equal
with the Father in dignity and glory, and yet wearing the garb of humanity! Divinity
and humanity were mysteriously combined, and man and God became one. It is in
this union that we find the hope of our fallen race. Looking upon Christ in humanity,
we look upon God, and see in Him the brightness of His glory, the express image of
His person."- The Si/{ns of the Times, July 30, 1896.

4. What prophetic description of Christ's incarnation was misunderstood and

rejected by Israel? Isaiah 53:1-9; Hebrews 10:5; John 8:56. How do we un-
derstand the declaration that Christ "took on him the seed of Abraham" and
that He "was made of the seed of David according to the flesh"? Hebrews
2:16; Romans 1:3.

"It would have been an almost infinite humiliation for the Son of God to take
man's nature, even when Adam stood in his innocence in Eden. But Jesus accepted
humanity when the race had been weakened by four thousand years of sin. Like every
child of Adam He accepted the results of the working of the great law of hered-
ity."- The Desire of A,i[l's. p. 49.
"The name of God, given to Moses to express the idea of the eternal presence had
[nevertheless] been claimed as His own by this Galilean Rabbi. He had announced
Himself to be the self-existent One." -Ihid.. pp. 469, 470.

D Tuesday
CHRIST'S EQUALITY WITH THE FATHER AprilS

5. What was one of the main reasons why the Jewish leaders were bitterly op-
posed to Christ? John 10:29-33.

"Jesus claimed equal rights with God in doing a work equally sacred, and of the
same character with that which engaged the Father in heaven. But the Pharisees
were still more incensed. He had not only broken the law, according to their under-
standing, but in calling God 'His own Father' had declared Himself equal with God.
John 5:18, R.V."-The Desire of Ages, p. 207.

6. What does Paul say about Christ's equality with the Father? Philippians 2:6.
What degree of equality does Christ share with the Father? John 5:21, 22,
26.27; Matthew 28:18; Colossians 1:19.

D Wednesday
THE GREAT TEST April 6

7. What could Christ say throughout His earthly life and ministry? John 8:29.

"But God suffered with His Son. Angels beheld the Saviour's agony. They saw
their Lord enclosed by legions of satanic forces, His nature weighed down with a
shuddering, mysterious dread. There was silence in heaven. No harp was touched.
Could mortals have viewed the amazement of the angelic host as in silent grief they
watched the Father separating His beams of light, love, and glory from His beloved
Son, they would better understand how offensive in His sight is sin."-The Desire of
11.1!1'.'. p. fi93.

-10 -
8. How were Christ's followers tested and shaken by one of His sermons? John
6:64-69.

"Christ had spoken a sacred, eternal truth regarding the relation between
Himself and His followers. He knew the character of those who claimed to be His
disciples, and His words tested their faith. He declared that they were to believe and
act upon His teaching. All who received Him would partake of His nature, and be
conformed to His character. This involved the relinquishment of their cherished am-
bitions. It required the complete surrender of themselves to Jesus. They were called
to become self-sacrificing, meek and lowly in heart. They must walk in the narrow
path traveled by the Man of Calvary, if they would share in the gift of life and the
glory of heaven.
"The test was too great. ... The insincere, the selfish, who had sought Him, no
longer desired Him. If He would not devote His power and influence to obtaining
their freedom from the Romans, they would have nothing to do with Him."-The
Desire of Ages. p. 391.

o Thursday
FAITHFUL WITNESSES April 7

9. What incident at Calvary shows that Christ maintained His office and
authority as priest and intercessor? Luke 23:42, 43.

"With amazement the angels beheld the infinite love of Jesus, who, suffering the
most intense agony of mind and body, thought only of others, and encouraged the
penitent soul to believe. In His humiliation He as a prophet had addressed the
daughters of Jerusalem; as priest and advocate He had pleaded with the Father to
forgive His murderers; as a loving Saviour He had forgiven the sins of the penitent
thief."-The Desire of Ages, p. 752.

10. As Peter and John had been with Jesus on the mount of transfiguration,
what testimony were they able to give? 2 Peter 1:16-18; 1 John 1:1-3.

"The disciples beheld with astonishment and fear the excellent majesty of Jesus
and the cloud that overshadowed them, and heard the voice of God in terrible majes-
ty, saying, 'This is My beloved Son; hear Him.' "-Early Writings, p. 164.

A TEACHER SENT FROM GOD

"In the divine plan of education as adapted to man's condition after the Fall,
Christ stands as the representative of the Father, the connecting link be-
tween God and man; He is the great teacher of mankind."-Education, p. 33.

KEY TEXT: "And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to

THE ONE FOUNDATION April 10

1. From what position and place did Christ come to communicate light to
human society? John 3:13.

"In the Teacher sent from God, heaven gave to men its best and greatest. He who
had stood in the councils of the Most High, who had dwelt in the innermost sanctuary
of the Eternal, was the One chosen to reveal in person to humanity the knowledge of
God."-Education, p. 73.

2. How did the Lord emphasize the importance of the lessons He was teaching?
Luke 6:47-49.

"In Him was found the perfect ideal. To reveal this ideal as the only true standard
for attainment; to show what every human being might become; what, through the in-
dwelling of humanity by divinity, all who received Him would become-for this,
Christ came to the world. He came to show how men are to be trained as befits the
sons of God; how on earth they are to practice the principles and to live the life of
heaven."-Education, pp. 73, 74.
o Monday
BY REVELATION AND OBEDIENCE April 11

3. In what lesson did Jesus demonstrate how the three main temptations can be
overcome? Matthew 4:1-11.

"Many look on this conflict between Christ and Satan as having no special bear-
ing on their own life; and for them it has little interest. But within the domain of every
human heart this controversy is repeated. Never does one leave the ranks of evil for
the service of God without encountering the assaults of Satan. The enticements
which Christ resisted were those that we find it so difficult to withstand. They were

-12 -
urged upon Him in as much greater degree as His character is superior to ours. With
the terrible weight of the sins of the world upon Him, Christ withstood the test upon
appetite, upon the love of the world, and upon that love of display which leads to
presumption. These were the temptations that overcame Adam and Eve, and that so
readily overcome us."-The Desire of Ages, pp. 116, 117.

4. What relationship should we establish with the Divine Teacher? John 14:23;
1 John 3:24; Hebrews 2:18.

"No intangible principle, no impersonal essence or mere abstraction, can satisfy

the needs and longings of human beings in this life of struggle with sin and sorrow
and pain. It is not enough to believe in law and force, in things that have no pity, and
never hear the cry for help. We need to know of an almighty arm that will hold us up,
of an infinite Friend that pities us. We need to clasp a hand that is warm, to trust in a
heart full of tenderness. And even so God has in His word revealed Himself."-Educa-
tion, p. 133.

D Tuesday
THE EVERLASTING GOSPEL April 12
5. What should we understand concerning the application and duration of the
words of Jesus? Matthew 24:35.

"Christ's teaching, like His sympathies, embraced the world. Never can there be
a circumstance of life, a crisis in human experience, which has not been anticipated in
His teaching, and for which its principles have not a lesson. The Prince of teachers,
His words will be found a guide to His co-workers till the end of time."-Education,
pp. 81, 82.

6. What is the relationship between the words of the Father and those of the
Son? John 14:24.

"Instead of directing the people to study men's theories about God, His word, or
His works, He taught them to behold Him, as manifested in His works, in His word,
and by His providences. He brought their minds in contact with the mind of the In-
finite."-Education, p. 81.

D Wednesday
GOD IS TRUE April 13
7. While the Lord continued to teach the truth and prove that He had been sent
of God, what were the professed teachers compelled to admit? John
7:14-18,25-29.

"All the while Jesus was at Jerusalem during the feast He was shadowed by
spies. Day after day new schemes to silence Him were tried. The priests and rulers
were watching to entrap Him. They were planning to stop Him by violence. But this
was not all. They wanted to humble this Galilean rabbi before the people.
"On the first day of His presence at the feast, the rulers had come to Him,
demanding by what authority He taught. They wished to divert attention from Him to
the question of His right to teach, and thus to their own importance and authority."
- The Desire of Ages, p. 455.

-13 -
8. What was the testimony of John the Baptist concerning the words of the
Father and those of the Son? John 3:31-36.

"Whenever the message of truth comes home to souls with special power, Satan
stirs up his agents to start a dispute over some minor question. Thus he seeks to at-
tract attention from the real issue. Whenever a good work is begun, there are cavilers
ready to enter into dispute over forms or technicalities, to draw minds away from the
living realities. When it appears that God is about to work in a special manner for His
people, let them not be enticed into a controversy that will work only ruin of souls.
The questions that most concern us are, Do I believe with saving faith on the Son of
God? Is my life in harmony with the divine law? 'He that believeth on the Son hath
everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life.' 'And hereby we
do know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.' John 3:36; 1 John 2:3."
- The Desire of Ages. p. 396.

o Thursday
"WE HAVE HEARD HIM OURSELVES" April 14

9. What contrast was seen between Samaritans and Pharisees concerning the
evidence that Christ was the "Teacher sent from God"? John 4:39-42; 7:48.

"Jesus had begun to break down the partition wall between Jew and Gentile, and
to preach salvation to the world. Though He was a Jew, He mingled freely with the
Samaritans, setting at nought the Pharisaic customs of His nation. In face of their
prejudices He accepted the hospitality of this despised people. He slept under their
roofs, ate with them at their tables-partaking of the food prepared and served by
their hands-taught in their streets, and treated them with the utmost kindness and
courtesy." - The Desire of Ages. p. 193.

10. When Christ became the Master Teacher, what did John acknowledge? John
5:32-35. What declaration is confirmed by Christ's true followers? John
6:35.

"As the highest preparation for your work, I point you to the words, the life, the
methods, of the Prince of teachers. I bid you consider Him. Here is your true ideal.
Behold it, dwell upon it, until the Spirit of the divine Teacher shall take possession of
your heart and life."-Education, p. 282.

THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

"As the radiant lamps of the temple lighted up all about them, so Christ, the
source of spiritual light, illumines the darkness of the world. Yet the symbol

was a truer representation of the glory of His mission:' - The Desire of Ages,

A PROPHECY FAMILIAR TO ISRAEL April 17

1. How did God, through Isaiah, announce the mission of Christ to the world?
Isaiah 49:6 (last part).

2. In his prayer with the child Jesus in his arms, in the temple, what did Simeon
say about the promised Redeemer? Luke 2:29-32.

"The aged Simeon, in the temple where Christ was now teaching, had spoken of
Him as 'a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of Thy people Israel.' Luke 2:32.
In these words he was applying to Him a prophecy familiar to all Israel." - The Desire

CHRIST CLAIMS TO BE THE PROMISED ONE April 18

3. In harmony with the prophecy of Isaiah 49:6, in what terms did Jesus in-
troduce Himself to the people? John 8:12. How did the Pharisees react to
Christ's claim? John 8:13, 25 (first part).

"To the Pharisees and rulers this claim seemed an arrogant assumption. That a
man like themselves should make such pretensions they could not tolerate. Seeming

-15 -
to ignore His words, they demanded, 'Who are Thou?' They were bent upon forcing
Him to declare Himself the Christ. His appearance and His work were so at variance
with the expectations of the people, that, as His wily enemies believed, a direct an-
nouncement of Himself as the Messiah would cause Him to be rejected as an im-
postor."-The Desire of Ages, p. 465.

4. What did Jesus reply to the Pharisees? John 8:25, 26, 28, 29.

"But to their question, 'Who art Thou?' Jesus replied, 'Even that which I have
also spoken unto you from the beginning.' John 8:25, R. V. That which had been re-
vealed in His words was revealed also in His character. He was the embodiment of
the truths He taught. ... He did not attempt to prove His Messianic claim, but showed
His unity with God. If their minds had been open to God's love, they would have
received Jesus."-The Desire of Ages, p. 465.

JOHN AND PAUL TESTIFY ABOUT CHRIST April 19

5. What testimony did John the beloved apostle give about Christ's mission to
dispel darkness? John 1:4, 5, 9.

"The world has had its great teachers, men of giant intellect and wonderful
research, men whose utterances have stimulated thought, and opened to view vast
fields of knowledge; and these men have been honored as guides and benefactors of
their race. But there is One who stands higher than they. 'As many as received Him,
to them gave He power to become the sons of God.' 'No man hath seen God at any
time; the only-begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared
Him.' John 1:12,18. We can trace the line of the world's great teachers as far back as
human records extend; but the Light was before them. As the moon and the stars of
the solar system shine by the reflected light of the sun, so, as far as their teaching is
true, do the world's great thinkers reflect the rays of the Sun of Righteousness. Every
gem of thought, every flash of the intellect, is from the Light of the world."- The
Desire of Ages, pp. 464, 465.

6. What did Paul say on this point? 2 Corinthians 4:6.

"He [Christ] was the spiritual light that in symbol and type and prophecy had
shone upon Israel. But not to the Jewish nation alone was the light given. As the sun-
beams penetrate to the remotest corners of the earth, so does the light of the Sun of
Righteousness shine upon every soul."- The Desire of Ages, p. 464.

WALKING IN THE LIGHT April 20

7. What change takes place in those who walk in the light of truth? John 8:31,
32, 34, 36; Romans 8:2.

"Every soul that refuses to give himself to God is under the control of another
power. He is not his own. He may talk of freedom, but he is in the most abject slav-
ery. He is not allowed to see the beauty of truth, for his mind is under the control of

-16 -
Satan. While he flatters himself that he is following the dictates of his own judgment,
he obeys the will of the prince of darkness. Christ came to break the shackles of sin-
slavery from the soul. ...
"The only condition upon which the freedom of man is possible is that of becom-
ing one with Christ. 'The truth shall make you free'; and Christ is the truth. Sin can
triumph only by enfeebling the mind, and destroying the liberty of the soul. Subjec-
tion to .God is restoration to one's self-to the true glory and dignity of man. The
divine law, to which we are brought into subjection, is 'the law of liberty.' James
2:12."-Th~ Desire of Ages, p. 466.

8. What is the evidence that we are actually walking in the light as individuals
and as a people? 1 John 1:7.

"Christ and His word are in perfect harmony. Received and obeyed, they open a
sure path for the feet of all who are willing to walk in the light as Christ is in the light.
If the people of God would appreciate His word, we should have a heaven in the
church here below. Christians would be eager, hungry, to search the word. They
would be anxious for time to compare scripture with scripture and to meditate upon
the word. They would be more eager for the light of the word than for the morning
paper, magazines, or novels. Their greatest desire would be to eat the flesh and drink
the blood of the Son of God. And as a result their lives would be conformed to the
principles and promises of the word. Its instruction would be to them as the leaves of
the tree of life. It would be in them a well of water, springing up into everlasting life.
Refreshing showers of grace would refresh and revive the soul, causing them to for-
get all toil and weariness. They would be strengthened and encouraged by the words
of inspiration." - Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 193.

A SERIOUS WARNING April 21

9. What warning should discourage men from following their own "light"?
Isaiah 5:20; 50:11; Matthew 6:23; Isaiah 8:20.

"Let the men to whom God has entrusted great responsibilities be perfectly sure
that they are following their great Leader, even Christ, and are not moving under the
impulse of their own natural tempers. We shall be safe only when we consecrate our-
selves to God and look to Jesus, earnestly longing to work out His plan. Men may
follow many kinds of lights, but there is only one Light that it will be safe for them to
follow. Be sure that you are following Jesus whithersoever He goeth."-Testimonies to
Ministers, p. 211.
"Our only safety will be found in constantly seeking wisdom from God, in careful-
ly weighing every matter with much fear and trembling, lest there should be brought
into the work not the light of heaven, but the weakness of man. But the Lord has
promised to give light to those who seek Him with the whole heart."-Ibid.

10. What is the explanation for the fact that many people refuse to walk in the
light? John 3:19, 20.

reproved and their real characters revealed. If they continue in the path of transgres-

"HE CHOSE TWELVE"

"For the carrying on of His work, Christ did not choose the learning or elo-
quence of the Jewish Sanhedrin or the power of Rome. Passing by the self-
righteous Jewish teachers, the Master Worker chose humble, unlearned men
to proclaim the truths that were to move the world." - The Acts of the Apostles,

STRENGTH IN UNITY April 24

1. What experience was needed among the disciples before they could have suc-
cess in the work? John 17:21.

"In these first disciples was presented marked diversity. They were to be the
world's teachers, and they represented widely varied types of character. In order suc-
cessfully to carry forward the work to which they had been called, these men, differ-
ing in natural characteristics and in habits of life, needed to come into unity of feeling,
thought, and action. This unity it was Christ's object to secure. To this end He sought
to bring them into unity with Himself."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 20.

2. What method of gospel ministry was illustrated by Jesus? 1 John 1:2.

"The most complete illustration of Christ's methods as a teacher is found in His

training of the twelve first disciples. Upon these men were to rest weighty responsi-
bilities. He had chosen them as men whom He could imbue with His Spirit, and who
could be fitted to carry forward His work on earth when He should leave it. To them,
above all others, He gave the advantage of His own companionship. Through per-
sonal association He impressed Himself upon these chosen colaborers. 'The Life was
manifested,' says John the beloved, 'and we have seen it, and bear witness,' 1 John
1:2.
"Only by such communion-the communion of mind with mind and heart with
heart, of the human with the divine-can be communicated that vitalizing energy
which it is the work of true education to impart. It is only life that begets life,"-Educa-
tion, p. 84.

NEW METHODS OF TEACHING April 25

3. What system of teaching did Jesus use and where did He present His lessons?
Luke 6:17-19.

"Sometimes He taught them as they sat together on the mountainside, sometimes

beside the sea, or from the fisherman's boat, sometimes as they walked by the way.
Whenever He spoke to the multitude, the disciples formed the inner circle. They
pressed close beside Him, that they might lose nothing of His instruction. They were
attentive listeners, eager to understand the truths they were to teach in all lands and
to all ages."-Education, p. 85.

4. Through what illustration did the Master show the contrast between the in-
effectual ceremonies and traditions of the Pharisees and the living truth that
He was teaching? Luke 5:36-39.

"The instrumentalities to be used in the gospel work are those souls who gladly
receive the light which God sends them. These are His agencies for imparting the
knowledge of truth to the world. If through the grace of Christ His people will become
new bottles, He will fill them with new wine."-The Desire of Ages, p. 279.

TEACHING TEACHERS TO TEACH April 26

5. What incidents reveal the methods Jesus used to train His future ministers?
Matthew 16:21-25; John 13:6-10.

"The history of no one of the disciples better illustrates Christ's method of train-
ing than does the history of Peter. Bold, aggressive, and self-confident, quick to
perceive and forward to act, prompt in retaliation yet generous in forgiving, Peter
often erred, and often received reproof. Nor were his warmhearted loyalty and devo-
tion to Christ the less decidedly recognized and commended. Patiently, with discrim-
inating love, the Saviour dealt with His impetuous disciple, seeking to check his self-
confidence, and to teach him humility, obedience, and trust.
"But only in part was the lesson learned. Self-assurance was not uprooted.
"Often Jesus, the burden heavy upon His own heart, sought to open to the
disciples the scenes of His trial and suffering. But their eyes were holden. The knowl-
edge was unwelcome, and they did not see. Self-pity, that shrank from fellowship
with Christ in suffering, prompted Peter's remonstrance, 'Pity Thyself, Lord: this
shall not be unto Thee.' Matthew 16:22, margin. His words expressed the thought
and feeling of the Twelve." -Education, p. 88.

6. What did Jesus and the disciples do during the time spent in retirement?
Mark 6:30-32.

"The rest which Christ and His disciples took was not self-indulgent rest. The
time they spent in retirement was not devoted to pleasure seeking. They talked to-
gether regarding the work of God, and the possibility of bringing greater efficiency to
the work. The disciples had been with Christ, and could understand Him; to them He

-19 -
need not talk in parables. He corrected their errors, and made plain to them the right
way of approaching the people. He opened more fully to them the precious treasures
of divine truth. They were vitalized by divine power, and inspired with hope and cour-
age."- The Desire of Ages, p. 361.

ORDER AND ORGANIZATION April 27

7. What lesson did Jesus teach on self-control? Luke 10:3.

"The servants of Christ are not to act out the dictates of the natural heart. They
need to have close communion with God, lest, under provocation, self rise up, and
they pour forth a torrent of words that are unbefitting, that are not as dew or the still
showers that refresh the withering plants. This is what Satan wants them to do; for
these are his methods....
"Those who are brought in controversy with the enemies of truth have to meet,
not only men, but Satan and his agents. Let them remember the Saviour's words,
'Behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.' Luke 10:3. Let them rest in the
love of God, and the spirit will be kept calm, even under personal abuse. The Lord
will clothe them with a divine panoply. His Holy Spirit will influence the mind and
heart, so that their voices shall not catch the notes of the baying of the wolves."- The
Desire of Ages, p. 353.

8. As the work increased and the experience of Christ's disciples developed,

what step became necessary? How important was this matter? Luke 6:13;
Mark 3:13-15.

"The first step was now to be taken in the organization of the church that after
Christ's departure was to be His representative on earth. No costly sanctuary was at
their command, but the Saviour led His disciples to the retreat He loved, and in their
minds the sacred experiences of that day were forever linked with the beauty of
mountain and vale and sea.
"Jesus had called His disciples that He might send them forth as His witnesses, to
declare to the world what they had seen and heard of Him. Their office was the most
important to which human beings had ever been called, and was second only to that of
Christ Himself. They were to be workers together with God for the saving of the
world. As in the Old Testament the twelve patriarchs stand as representatives of
Israel, so the twelve apostles were to stand as representatives of the gospel church."
- The Desire of Ages, p. 291.

o Thursday
THE GREAT COMMISSION April 28

9. What was the extent of the missionary enterprise that Jesus had in view
when He organized the church? Acts 1:4-8.

"The Christian church was at this time entering upon an important era. The work
of proclaiming the gospel message among the Gentiles was now to be prosecuted with
vigor; and as a result the church was to be strengthened by a great ingathering of
souls. The apostles who had been appointed to lead out in this work would be exposed

- 20-
to suspicion, prejudice, and jealousy. Their teachings concerning the breaking down
of 'the middle wall of partition' (Ephesians 2:14) that had so long separated the Jewish
and the Gentile world, would naturally subject them to the charge of heresy, and their
authority as ministers of the gospel would be questioned by many zealous, believing
Jews. God foresaw the difficulties that His servants would be called to meet, and, in
order that their work should be above challenge, He instructed the church by revela-
tion to set them apart publicly to the work of the ministry. Their ordination was a
public recognition of their divine appointment to bear to the Gentiles the glad tidings
of the gospel."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 161.

10. What gifts were bestowed upon the early Christians and for what purpose? 1
Corinthians 12:4-11; Ephesians 4:8-15. What memorial will be included in
the New Jerusalem? Revelation 21:14.

the wondering multitude. Such teaching is contrary to all they have ever

feed their ambitious hopes. But there is about this new Teacher a power that

THE BLESSINGS May 1

1. With what message did the Master Teacher begin His work? Matthew 4:17.

"When the Saviour began His ministry, the popular conception of the Messiah
and His work was such as wholly unfitted the people to receive Him. The spirit of
true devotion had been lost in tradition and ceremonialism, and the prophecies were
interpreted at the dictate of proud, world-loving hearts....
"A great work was yet to be accomplished for these disciples before they would
be prepared for the sacred trust that would be theirs when Jesus should ascend to
heaven. Yet they had responded to the love of Christ, and, though slow of heart to
believe, Jesus saw in them those whom He could train and discipline for His great
work."- TI/lJuJ.{hts From the Mount (~( Blessinl{. pp. 1-3.

~. What "beatitudes" did Jesus pronounce at the beginning of His Sermon on

the Mount? Matthew 5:1-12.

"Christ disappointed the hope of worldly greatness. In the Sermon on the Mount
He sought to undo the work that had been wrought by false education, and to give His
hearers a right conception of His kingdom and of His own character. Yet He did not
make a direct attack on the errors of the people. He saw the misery of the world on ac-
count of sin, yet He did not present before them a vivid delineation of their wretched-
ness. He taught them of something infinitely better than they had known. Without
combating their ideas of the kingdom of God, He told them the conditions of entrance
therein, leaving them to draw their own conclusions as to its nature. The truths He
taught are no less important to us than to the multitude that followed Him. We no less
than they need to learn the foundation principles of the kingdom of God." - The Desire

RIGHTEOUSNESS RADIATING FROM WITHIN May 2
3. Through what simile did Jesus set forth our privileges and responsibilities?
Matthew 5:13-16.

" 'Ye are the light of the world.' The Jews thought to confine the benefits of
salvation to their own nation; but Christ showed them that salvation is like the sun-
shine. It belongs to the whole world. The religion of the Bible is not to be confined
between the covers of a book, nor within the walls of a church. It is not to be brought
out occasionally for our own benefit, and then to be carefully laid aside again. It is to
sanctify the daily life, to manifest itself in every business transaction and in all our
social relations." - The Desire of Ages, pp. 306, 307.

4. What misrepresented truth did Christ begin to clarify and correct? Isaiah
64:6; 61:11; Matthew 5:20.

"Righteousness is holiness, likeness to God; and 'God is love.' 1 John 4:16. It is

conformity to the law of God, for 'all Thy commandments are righteousness.' (Psalm
119:172), and 'love is the fulfilling of the law' (Romans 13:10). Righteousness is love,
and love is the light and the life of God. The righteousness of God is embodied in
Christ. We receive righteousness by receiving Him.
"Not by painful struggles or wearisome toil, not by gift or sacrifice, is righteous-
ness obtained; but it is freely given to every soul who hungers and thirsts to receive
it.' '-Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 18.

THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD May3
5. What was the tenor of the Sermon on the Mount? Matthew 5:21-28, 44, 45.

"Jesus takes up the commandments separately, and explains the depth and breadth
of their requirement. Instead of removing one jot of their force, He shows how far-
reaching their principles are, and exposes the fatal mistake of the Jews in their out-
ward show of obedience. He declares that by the evil thought or the lustful look the
law of God is transgressed. One who becomes a party to the least injustice is breaking
the law and degrading his own moral nature. Murder first exists in the mind. He who
gives hatred a place in his heart is setting his feet in the path of the murderer, and his
sufferings are abhorrent to God."- The Desire vf Ages, p. 310.

6. How did Christ vindicate the eternal validity of His law? Matthew 5:17-19;
Luke 16:17.

"It was Christ who, amid thunder and flame, had proclaimed the law upon Mount
Sinai. The glory of God, like devouring fire, rested upon its summit, and the mountain
quaked at the presence of the Lord. The hosts of Israel, lying prostrate upon the
earth, had listened in awe to the sacred precepts of the law. What a contrast to the
scene upon the mount of the Beatitudes! Under the summer sky, with no sound to
break the stillness but the song of birds, Jesus unfolded the principles of His
kingdom. Yet He who spoke to the people that day in accents of love, was opening to
them the principles of the law proclaimed upon Sinai."-Thvughts From the Mount o(

7. On what foundation did Jesus instruct His followers to build? Matthew

7:21-27; 15:3; Luke 10:26; 11:28.

"Do you desire to become a follower of Christ, yet know not how to begin? Are
you in darkness and know not how to find the light? Follow the light you have. Set
your heart to obey what you do know of the word of God. His power, His very life,
dwells in His word. As you receive the word in faith, it will give you power to obey.
As you give heed to the light you have, greater light will come. You are building on I
God's word, and your character will be builded after the similitude of the character of J
Christ."-Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 150.

8. What allegiance does Jesus require, and what promise has He fulfilled in
every age? Matthew 6:30-34.

"One day alone is ours, and during this day we are to live for God. For this one

whose example we are to follow in our character building. In His life upon the earth
He plainly revealed the divine nature. We should strive to be perfect in our sphere, as
He was perfect in His sphere. No longer are the members of the church to remain un-

17; Romans 5:5; 8:14.

2. What help did the disciples receive from the Holy Spirit? John 14:26; 16:13.

"Often as He had presented the Old Testament Scriptures, and showed their ap-
plication to Himself and His work of atonement, they had been awakened by His
Spirit, and lifted into a heavenly atmosphere. Of the spiritual truths spoken by the
prophets they had a clearer understanding than had the original writers themselves.
Hereafter they would read the Old Testament Scriptures, not as the doctrines of the
scribes and Pharisees, not as the utterances of wise men who were dead, but as a new
revelation from God. They beheld Him 'whom the world cannot receive, because it
seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you,

3. What relationship of the Jews to the Holy Spirit resulted in their rejection as

"Unbelief, having once been cherished, continued to control the men of Nazareth.
So it controlled the Sanhedrin and the nation. With priests and people, the first rejec-
tion of the demonstration of the Holy Spirit's power was the beginning of the end. In

order to prove that their first resistance was right, they continued ever after to cavil at
the words of Christ. Their rejection of the Spirit culminated in the cross of Calvary, in
the destruction of their city, in the scattering of the nation to the winds of heaven."

4. How are many today following in the footsteps of the Jews? Hebrews 3:12.

"Is not the same thing repeated in our day? Are there not many, even religious

they may keep their own traditions?"-The Desire of Ages, p. 213.

5. What is the work of Christ and of the Holy Spirit in behalf of our salvation?
Hebrews 7:25; Romans 8:26, 11.

"Christ, our Mediator, and the Holy Spirit are constantly interceding in man's
behalf, but the Spirit pleads not for us as does Christ who presents His blood, shed
from the foundation of the world; the Spirit works upon our hearts, drawing out
prayers and penitence, praise and thanksgiving. The gratitude which flows from our
lips is the result of the Spirit striking the cords of the soul in holy memories, awaken-
ing the music of the heart."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 6,
pp. 1077, 1078.

6. What power was granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost? What
special manifestation characterized the presence of this power? Acts 2:1-4,
14-18.

"During the patriarchal age the influence of the Holy Spirit had often been revealed
in a marked manner, but never in its fullness. Now, in obedience to the word of the
Saviour, the disciples offered their supplications for this gift, and in heaven Christ \>

ings. He understood their symbolical value, and He saw that they were now
perverted and misunderstood. Spiritual worship was fast disappearing.

A RENOVATION May 15

1. As the Jewish forms of worship had become confusing and meaningless,

what was urgently needed? John 8:12-18; 1 Corinthians 3:16; Galatians
2:20.

"That temple, erected for the abode of the divine Presence, was designed to be an
object lesson for Israel and for the world. From eternal ages it was God's purpose that
every created being, from the bright and holy seraph to man, should be a temple for
the indwelling of the Creator. Because of sin, humanity ceased to be a temple for God.
Darkened and defiled by evil, the heart of man no longer revealed the glory of the
Divine One. But by the incarnation of the Son of God, the purpose of Heaven is ful-
filled. God dwells in humanity, and through saving grace the heart of man becomes
again His temple." - The Desire of Ages, p. 161.

2. What is the nature of true worship? John 4:24.

"Not by seeking a holy mountain or a sacred temple are men brought into com-
munion with heaven. Religion is not to be confined to external forms and ceremonies.
The religion that comes from God is the only religion that will lead to God. In order to
serve Him aright, we must be born of the divine Spirit. This will purify the heart and
renew the mind, giving us a new capacity for knowing and loving God. It will give us a
willing obedience to all His requirements. This is true worship. It is the fruit of the
working of the Holy Spirit. By the Spirit every sincere prayer is indited, and such
prayer is acceptable to God. Wherever a soul reaches out after God, there the Spirit's
working is manifest, and God will reveal Himself to that soul. For such worshipers He
is seeking. He waits to receive them, and to make them His sons and daughters."

BREAKING DOWN NATIONAL BARRIERS May 16

3. In His efforts to convert a Samaritan woman, how did Jesus act with a view
to removing national prejudice and bitter feelings that existed between Jews
and Samaritans? John 4:7-10.

4. Where was the center of Samaritan worship? What indirect warning was
found in Christ's words concerning Jerusalem? John 4:19-23.
I'

"When the temple at Jerusalem was rebuilt in the days of Ezra, the Samaritans
wished to join the Jews in its erection. This privilege was refused them, and a bitter
animosity sprang up between the two peoples. The Samaritans built a rival temple on
Mount Gerizim. Here they worshiped in accordance with the Mosaic ritual, though
they did not wholly renounce idolatry. But disasters attended them, their temple was
destroyed by their enemies, and they seemed to be under a curse; yet they still clung
to their traditions and their forms of worship. They would not acknowledge the tem-
ple at Jerusalem as the house of God, nor admit that the religion of the Jews was
superior to their own."-The Desire of Ages, p. 188.

ACCEPTABLE WORSHIP AND REVERENCE May 17

5. How is true worship conducted in heaven and all places? Revelation 4:8-11;
Psalm 96:9. What messages show the distinction between true and false
worshipers in the sealing time? Revelation 14:7-12.

"After the warning against the worship of the beast and his image the prophecy
declares: 'Here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.'
Since those who keep God's commandments are thus placed in contrast with those
that worship the beast and his image and receive his mark, it follows that the keeping
of God's law, on the one hand, and its violation, on the other, will make the distinction
between the worshipers of God and the worshipers of the beast." - The Great Controver-
sy, pp. 445, 446.

6. What lessons of reverence are found in the Old Testament? Exodus 3:5;
Joshua 5:13-15; Habakkuk 2:20. What respect should we show for the
word of God?

"We should reverence God's word. For the printed volume we should show re-
spect, never putting it to common uses, or handling it carelessly. And never should
Scripture be quoted in a jest, or paraphrased to point a witty saying. 'Every word of
God is pure'; 'as silver tried in a furnace of. earth, purified seven times.' Proverbs
30:5; Psalm 12:6."-Education, p. 244.

ACCEPTABLE WORSHIP AND REVERENCE (continued) May 18

7. What lesson can be learned from the record of true worship restored by
Nehemiah? Nehemiah 9:3-6.

-29-
"Nehemiah's efforts to restore the worship of the true God had been crowned
with success. As long as the people were true to the oath they had taken, as long as
they were obedient to God's word, so long would the Lord fulfill His promise by pour-
ing rich blessings upon them."-Prophets and Kings, p. 668.
8. How do the Scriptures distinctly teach the form of acceptable reverence? Ex-
odus 20:3-5; Acts 17:22-29.

"Reverence, in which the youth who mocked Elisha were so lacking, is a grace
that should be carefully cherished. Every child should be taught to show true
reverence for God. Never should His name be spoken lightly or thoughtlessly.
Angels, as they speak it, veil their faces. With what reverence should we, who are
fallen and sinful, take it upon our lips!"-Prophets and Kings. p. 236.

THE TEMPLE PURGED May 19

9. In what spirit were the ceremonies conducted in the temple, and what refor-
matory steps did Jesus take at a Passover feast? John 2:13-17.

"Numerous ceremonies were enjoined upon the people without the proper instruc-
tion as to their import. The worshipers offered their sacrifices without understanding
that they were typical of the only perfect Sacrifice."-The Desire of Ages. p. 157.
"Because of their spiritual darkness, even the disciples of Jesus often failed of
comprehending His lessons. But many of these lessons were made plain to them by
subsequent events. When He walked no more with them, His words were a stay to
their hearts."-Ibid., p. 165.
10. Why and how was the same work repeated after three years? Mark 11:15-18.

"At the beginning of His ministry, Christ had driven from the temple those who
defiled it by their unholy traffic; and His stern and godlike demeanor had struck ter-
ror to the hearts of the scheming traders. At the close of His mission He came again
to the temple, and found it still desecrated as before. The condition of things was even
worse than before. The outer court of the temple was like a vast cattle yard. With the
cries of the animals and the sharp chinking of coin was mingled the sound of angry
altercation between traffickers, and among them were heard the voices of men in
sacred office. The dignitaries of the temple were themselves engaged in buying and
selling and the exchange of money. So completely were they controlled by their greed
of gain that in the sight of God they were no better than thieves."- The Desire of Ages,

LORD OF THE SABBATH

'Jesus had come to 'magnify the law, and make it honorable.' He was not to
lessen its dignity, but to exalt it. The scripture says, 'He shall not fail nor be
discouraged, till He have set judgment in the earth.' Isaiah 42:21,4. He had
come to free the Sabbath from those burdensome requirements that had
made it a curse instead of a blessing." - The Desire of Ages, p. 206.

THE PURPOSE OF THE SABBATH May 22

1. What was the purpose of the Sabbath institution among God's people? Ex-
odus 20:8; 31:12-17; Ezekiel 20:12, 20.

"No other institution which was committed to the Jews tended so fully to distin-
guish them from surrounding nations as did the Sabbath. God designed that its observ-
ance should designate them as His worshipers. It was to be a token of their separation
from idolatry, and their connection with the true God. But in order to keep the Sab-
bath holy, men must themselves be holy. Through faith they must become partakers
of the righteousness of Christ. When the command was given to Israel, 'Remember
the Sabbath day, to keep it holy,' the Lord said also to them, 'Ye shall be holy men un-
to Me.' Exodus 20:8; 22:31. Only thus could the Sabbath distinguish Israel as the wor-
shipers of God."-The Desire of Ages, p. 283.

2. Upon what condition would God fulfill His promises to Israel during their
pilgrimage to the promised land? Ezekiel 20:13-16.

"[H]e who created all things in heaven and in earth, and by whom all things hold
together, is the head of the church, and that by His power we are reconciled to God.
For, speaking of Israel, He said, 'I gave them My Sabbaths, to be a sign between Me
and them, that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them,' -make them
holy. Ezekiel 20:12. Then the Sabbath is a sign of Christ's power to make us holy.
And it is given to all whom Christ makes holy. As a sign of His sanctifying power, the
Sabbath is given to all who through Christ become a part of the Israel of God."-The
Desire of Ages, p. 288.

PERVERTED BY SATAN May 23

3. What feature of Sabbathkeeping did Satan pervert among the Jews? Isaiah
58:13, 14; Matthew 23:4.

"As the Jews departed from God, and failed to make the righteousness of Christ
their own by faith, the Sabbath lost its significance to them. Satan was seeking to ex-
alt himself and to draw men away from Christ, and he worked to pervert the Sabbath,
because it is the sign of the power of Christ. The Jewish leaders accomplished the will
of Satan by surrounding God's rest day with burdensome requirements. In the days of
Christ the Sabbath had become so perverted that its observance reflected the char-
acter of selfish and arbitrary men rather than the character of the loving heavenly
Father."- The Desire of Ages, pp. 283, 284.

4. How did the Sabbath lose its original significance in the hands of the Jews?
Isaiah 1:13-16; Luke 6:9.

TRUE SABBATHKEEPING RESTORED May 24

5. What prophetic promise relating to the Sabbath as a universal blessing was

to be taught by the Master Teacher? Isaiah 56:1-8. Why did the true mean·
ing of the Sabbath have to be restored?

"The Jews had so perverted the law that they made it a yoke of bondage. Their
meaningless requirements had become a byword among other nations. Especially
was the Sabbath hedged in by all manner of senseless restrictions. It was not to them
a delight, the holy of the Lord, and honorable. The scribes and Pharisees had made its
observance an intolerable burden. A Jew was not allowed to kindle a fire nor even to
light a candle on the Sabbath. As a consequence the people were dependent upon the
Gentiles for many services which their rules forbade them to do for themselves. They
did not reflect that if these acts were sinful, those who employed others to perform
them were as guilty as if they had done the work ~hemselves. They thought that sal-
vation was restricted to the Jews, and that the condition of all others, being already
hopeless, could be made no worse. But God has given no commandments which can-
not be obeyed by all. His laws sanction no unreasonable or selfish restrictions."- The
Desire of Ages, p. 204.

6. What was the custom of Christ in connection with the Sabbath? Luke 4: 16.

"During His childhood and youth, Jesus had worshiped among His brethren in
the synagogue at Nazareth. Since the opening of His ministry He had been absent
from them, but they had not been ignorant of what had befallen Him. As He again ap-
peared among them, their interest and expectation were excited to the highest pitch.
Here were the familiar forms and faces of those whom He had known from infancy.
Here were His mother, His brothers and sisters, and all eyes were turned upon Him
as He entered the synagogue upon the Sabbath day, and took His place among the
worshipers."-The Desire of Ages, p. 236.

TRUE SABBATHKEEPING RESTORED (continued) May 25

7. How did Jesus teach lawful (or true) Sabbathkeeping? Matthew 12:1-13;
Mark 2:27,28.

"The Saviour had not come to set aside what patriarchs and prophets had spoken;
for He Himself had spoken through these representative men. All the truths of God's
word came from Him. But these priceless gems had been placed in false settings.
Their precious light had been made to minister to error. God desired them to be
removed from their settings of error and replaced in the framework of truth. This
work only a divine hand could accomplish. By its connection with error, the truth had
been serving the cause of the enemy of God and man. Christ had come to place it
where it would glorify God, and work the salvation of humanity. "-The Desire of Ages,
pp. 287, 288.

8. How did Jesus show the contrast between the true and false concepts about
the Sabbath? Luke 13:10-16; 14:3-5; Mark 3:1-5.

"The demands upon God are even greater upon the Sabbath than upon other
days. His people then leave their usual employment, and spend the time in meditation
and worship. They ask more favors of Him on the Sabbath than upon other days.
They demand His special attention. They crave His choicest blessings. God does not
wait for the Sabbath to pass before He grants these requests. Heaven's work never
ceases, and men should never rest from doing good. The Sabbath is not intended to
be a period of useless inactivity. The law forbids secular labor on the rest day of the
Lord; the toil that gains a livelihood must cease; no labor for worldly pleasure or profit
is lawful upon that day; but as God ceased His labor of creating, and rested upon the
Sabbath and blessed it, so man is to leave the occupations of his daily life, and devote
those sacred hours to healthful rest, to worship, and to holy deeds. The work of Christ
in healing the sick was in perfect accord with the law. It honored the Sabbath."-The
Desire of Ages, p. 207.

9. What are some of the evidences that the disciples were faithful Sabbath-
keepers? Luke 23:56; Acts 16:13; 28:17. Explain why Acts 22:12 contains a
double evidence to this effect.

10. How does prophecy predict the restoration of the Sabbath among the true
followers of Christ in the time of the end? Isaiah 8:14-16, 20; 58:12, 13;
61:4.

"The prophet here describes a people who, in a time of general departure from
truth and righteousness, are seeking to restore the principles that are the foundation
of the kingdom of God. They are repairers of a breach that has been made in God's
law-the wall that He has placed around His chosen ones for their protection, and
obedience to whose precepts of justice, truth, and purity is to be their perpetual
safeguard....

"VAIN REPETITIONS" May 29

1. What pagan idea of prayer was developed by the Pharisees? Luke 18:9-14.

"The heathen looked upon their prayers as having in themselves merit to atone
for sin. Hence the longer the prayer the greater the merit. If they could become holy
by their own efforts they would have something in themselves in which to rejoice,
some ground for boasting. This idea of prayer is an outworking of the principle of
self-expiation which lies at the foundation of all systems of false religion. The Phar-
isees had adopted this pagan idea of prayer, and it is by no means extinct in our day,
even among those who profess to be Christians. The repetition of set, customary
phrases, when the heart feels no need of God, is of the same character as the 'vain
repetitions' of the heathen."- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 86.

2. What instructions did the Master Teacher leave for His disciples concerning
prayer? Matthew 6:5-8.

"The Pharisees had stated hours for prayer; and when, as often came to pass,
they were abroad at the appointed time, they would pause wherever they might be-
perhaps in the street or in the marketplace, amid the hurrying throng of men-and
there in a loud voice rehearse their formal prayers. Such worship, offered merely for
self-glorification, called forth unsparing rebuke from Jesus. Yet He did not discoun-
tenance public prayer; for He Himself prayed with His disciples and with the
multitude. But He impressed upon His disciples the thought that their public prayers
should be short." -Gospel Workers, p. 175.

3. What did the disciples request of Jesus when they heard Him pray? What
model of prayer did Christ leave for His followers? Luke 11:1-4; Matthew
6:9-13.

4. What is the meaning of the petition, "Thy will be done"? Luke 11:2; 1 John
3:8 (last part); Hebrews 2:14, 15.

"The petition, 'Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven,' is a prayer that the
reign of evil on this earth may be ended, that sin may be forever destroyed, and the
kingdom of righteousness be established. Then in earth as in heaven will be fulfilled
'all the good pleasure of His goodness.' 2 Thessalonians 1:11."-Thoughts From the

PRAYER, A GREAT POWER May 31

5. What lesson should we learn from the parable of the importunate widow?
Luke 18:1; Psalm 50:15.

"Christ had been speaking of the period just before His second coming, and of the
perils through which His followers must pass. With special reference to that time He
related the parable 'to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.' "
-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 164.
"The Lord says, 'Call upon Me in the day of trouble.' Psalm 50:15. He invites us
to present to Him our perplexities and necessities, and our need of divine help. He
bids us be instant in prayer. As soon as difficulties arise, we are to offer to Him our
sincere, earnest petitions. By our importunate prayers we give evidence of our strong
confidence in God. The sense of our need leads us to pray earnestly, and our heavenly
Father is moved by our supplications."-Ibid., p. 172.

6. What will effectual, fervent prayer accomplish for the believers? James
5:14-16.

"Prayer will accomplish wonders for those who give themselves to prayer, watch-
ing thereunto. God desires us all to be in a waiting, hopeful position."-Counsels to
Parents, Teachers, and Students, pp. 479, 480.

CHRIST'S INTERCESSION June 1

7. How do the prayers of the saints relate to the intercession of Christ? Isaiah
27:5; Hebrews 7:25; Revelation 8:3, 4.

"By His spotless life, His obedience, His death on the cross of Calvary, Christ in-
terceded for the lost race. And now, not as a mere petitioner does the Captain of our
salvation intercede for us, but as a conqueror claiming His victory. His offering is
complete, and as our intercessor He executes His self-appointed work, holding before
God the censer containing His own spotless merits and the prayers, confessions, and

- 35-
thanksgiving of His people. Perfumed with the fragrance of His righteousness, these
ascend to God as a sweet savor. The offering is wholly acceptable, and pardon covers
all transgression."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 156.

8. What makes prayer so effective? John 14:11-14.

"Let the glorious conceptions of God possess your mind. Let your life be knit by
hidden links to the life of Jesus. He who commanded the light to shine out of darkness
is willing to shine in your heart, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God
in the face of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit will take the things of God and show them
unto you, conveying them as a living power into the obedient heart. Christ will lead
you to the threshold of the Infinite. You may behold the glory beyond the veil, and
reveal to men the sufficiency of Him who ever liveth to make intercession for
us."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 149.

AN EXAMPLE FOR US June 2

9. How is the believer often assisted during prayer? Romans 8:26.

"We must not only pray in Christ's name but by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
This explains what is meant when it is said that the Spirit 'maketh intercession for us,
with groanings which cannot be uttered.' Romans 8:26. Such prayer God delights to
answer. When with earnestness and intensity we breathe a prayer in the name of
Christ, there is in that very intensity a pledge from God that He is about to answer our
prayer 'exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.' Ephesians 3:20."-Christ's
Object Lessons, p. 147.

10. How did the Lord answer the united prayer of the disciples? Acts 1:12-14;
2:1-4.

"The disciples did not ask for a blessing for themselves. They were weighted
with the burden of souls. The gospel was to be carried to the ends of the earth, and
they claimed the endowment of power that Christ had promised. Then it was that the
Holy Spirit was poured out, and thousands were c0nverted in a day.
"So it may be now. Let Christians put away all dissension and give themselves to
God for the saving of the lost. Let them ask in faith for the promised blessing, and it
will come."-Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 21.

SIGNS AND MIRACLES

"The greatest significance of His [Christ's] miracles is seen in the fact that
they were for the blessing of humanity. The highest evidence that He came
from God is that His life revealed the character of God. He did the works and
spoke the words of God. Such a life is the greatest of all miracles." - The Desire

SCRIBES AND PHARISEES DEMAND A SIGN JuneS

1. With what request did some scribes and Pharisees come to Christ? Matthew
12:38; 16: 1.

"Now the Pharisees and Sadducees came to Christ, asking for a sign from heav-
en. When in the days of Joshua Israel went out to battle with the Canaanites at Beth-
horon, the sun had stood still at the leader's command until victory was gained; and
many similar wonders had been manifest in their history. Some such sign was de-
manded of Jesus. But these signs were not what the Jews needed. No mere external
evidence could benefit them. What they needed was not intellectual enlightenment,
but spiritual renovation."-The Desire of Ages, p. 406.

2. For what purpose did Christ work miracles? Matthew 12:39-41; John 10:37,
38; 6:29.

"When the message of truth is presented in our day, there are many who, like the
Jews, cry, Show us a sign. Work us a miracle. Christ wrought no miracle at the de-
mand of the Pharisees. He wrought no miracle in the wilderness in answer to Satan's
insinuations. He does not impart to us power to vindicate ourselves or to satisfy the
demands of unbelief and pride. But the gospel is not without a sign of its divine origin.
Is it not a miracle that we can break from the bondage of Satan? Enmity against Satan
is not natural to the human heart; it is implanted by the grace of God.... The change

- 37-
in human hearts, the transformation of human characters, is a miracle that reveals an
ever-living Saviour, working to rescue souls. A consistent life in Christ is a great
miracle. In the preaching of the word of God, the sign that should be manifest now
and always is the presence of the Holy Spirit, to make the word a regenerating power
to those that hear. This is God's witness before the world to the divine mission of His
C;;on."-The Desire of Ages, p. 407.

A PROMINENT CAUSE OF SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS June 6

3. On what condition would people benefit by Christ's miracles and teachings?

Luke 16:29, 31; John 5:46, 47.

"Those who desired a sign from Jesus had so hardened their hearts in unbelief
that they did not discern in His character the likeness of God. They would not see that
His mission was in fulfillment of the Scriptures. In the parable of the rich man and
Lazarus, Jesus said to the Pharisees, 'If they hear not Moses and the prophets,
neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.' Luke 16:31. No sign
that could be given in heaven or earth would benefit them."-The Desire of Ages, p. 407.

4. What lesson had been lost by the Jews as they failed to fully understand the
significance of signs and miracles? John 4:46-54.

"Every miracle that Christ performed was a sign of His divinity. He was doing
the very work that had been foretold of the Messiah; but to the Pharisees these works
of mercy were a positive offense. The Jewish leaders looked with heartless indif-
ference on human suffering. In many cases their selfishness and oppression had caused
the affliction that Christ relieved. Thus His miracles were to them a reproach."

CHRIST RAISES LAZARUS June 7

5. What was the reason for Christ's deliberate delay in going to Bethany follow-
ing the death of Lazarus? John 11:1-4, 15,21-27.

"In delaying to come to Lazarus, Christ had a purpose of mercy toward those who
had not received Him. He tarried, that by raising Lazarus from the dead He might
give to His stubborn, unbelieving people another evidence that He was indeed 'the
resurrection, and the life.' He was loath to give up all hope of the people, the poor,
wandering sheep of the house of Israel. His heart was breaking because of their im-
penitence. In His mercy He purposed to give them one more evidence that He was
the Restorer, the One who alone could bring life and immortality to light. This was to
be an evidence that the priests could not misinterpret. This was the reason of His
delay in going to Bethany. This crowning miracle, the raising of Lazarus, was to set
the seal of God on His work and on His claim to divinity. "-The Desire of Ages, p. 529.

6. In the miracle of raising Lazarus, what cooperation was seen between Christ
and the Father? John 11:41-44.

- 38-
"In all that He did, Christ was cooperating with His Father. Ever He had been
careful to make it evident that He did not work independently; it was by faith and
prayer that he wrought His miracles. Christ desired all to know His relationship with
His Father. 'Father,' He said, 'I thank Thee that Thou hast heard Me. And I knew
that Thou hearest Me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that
they may believe that Thou hast sent Me.' Here the disciples and the people were to
be given the most convincing evidence in regard to the relationship existing between
Christ and God. They were to be shown that Christ's claim was not a deception."

COMMISSIONING HIS DISCIPLES June 8

7. How was the power of God to continue with Christ's disciples? Mark 16: 15-20.

8. How did Joel foretell the work that was to be carried on by the followers of
Christ? Joel 2:28-32.

"The first disciples went forth preaching the word. They revealed Christ in their
lives. And the Lord worked with them, 'confirming the word with signs following,'
Mark 16:20. These disciples prepared themselves for their work. Before the day of
Pentecost they met together, and put away all differences. They were of one accord.
They believed Christ's promise that the blessing could be given, and they prayed in
faith. They did not ask for a blessing for themselves merely; they were weighted with
the burden for the salvation of souls. The gospel was to be carried to the uttermost
parts of the earth, and they claimed the endowment of power that Christ had prom-
ised. Then it was that the Holy Spirit was poured out, and thousands were converted
in a day,' '-The Desire of Ages, p. 827.

COUNTERFEIT SIGNS June 9

9. What counterfeit signs will be seen in our days? Matthew 24:24-26; Revela-
tion 13:13, 14.

"Fearful sights of a supernatural character will soon be revealed in the heavens,

in token of the power of miracle-working demons. The spirits of devils will go forth to
the kings of the earth and to the whole world, to fasten them in deception, and urge
them on to unite with Satan in his last struggle against the government of heaven. By
these agencies, rulers and subjects will be alike deceived. Persons will arise pretend-
ing to be Christ Himself, and claiming the title and worship which belong to the
world's Redeemer. They will perform wonderful miracles of healing and will profess
to have revelations from Heaven contradicting the testimony of the Scriptures."- The
Great Controversy, p. 624.

What description enables us to reject false Christs and spurious theories
about His coming? Matthew 24:3-5,27-31; Revelation 6:15-17.

"No human pen can portray the scene; no mortal mind is adequate to conceive its

"In the time of the end every divine institution is to be restored. The breach made
in the law at the time the Sabbath was changed by man, is to be repaired. God's rem-
nant people, standing before the world as reformers, are to show that the law of God
is the foundation of all enduring reform and that the Sabbath of the fourth command-
ment is to stand as a memorial of creation, a constant reminder of the power of God.
In clear, distinct lines they are to present the necessity of obedience to all the precepts
of the Decalogue. Constrained by the love of Christ, they are to cooperate with Him in
building up the waste places. They are to be repairers of the breach, restorers of
paths to dwell in." -Prophets and Kings, pp. 677, 678.

CALVARY

"By His life and His death, Christ proved that God's justice did not destroy
His mercy, but that sin could be forgiven, and that the law is righteous, and
can be perfectly obeyed. Satan's charges were refuted. God had given man
unmistakable evidence of His love." - The Desire of Ages, p. 762.

FAITH IN CHRIST June 12

1. What has God had all through the ages? Name a few faithful worshipers of
old. Hebrews 11:1-10, 17-26,32.

"Notwithstanding the prevailing iniquity, there was a line of holy men who,
elevated and ennobled by communion with God, lived as in the companionship of
heaven. They were men of massive intellect, of wonderful attainments. They had a
great and holy mission-to develop a character of righteousness, to teach a lesson of
godliness, not only to the men of their time, but for future generations. Only a few of
the most prominent are mentioned in the Scriptures; but all through the ages, God
had faithful witnesses, truehearted worshipers. "-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 84.

2. What is written concerning Abmham's faith and obedience to the will of

God? James 2:21-23.

"Abraham's great act of faith stands like a pillar of light, illuminating the path-
way of God's servants in all succeeding ages. Abraham did not seek to excuse himself
from doing the will of God.... Abraham was human; his passions and attachments
were like ours; but he did not stop to question how the promise could be fulfilled if
Isaac should be slain. He did not stay to reason with his aching heart. He knew that
God is just and righteous in all His requirements, and he obeyed the command to the
very letter. "-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 153.

FAITH IN CHRIST (continued) June 13

3. What sacrifice was required of Abraham and how great was his faith? He-
brews 11:17-19; John 8:56-58. What did that act prefigure?

"The sacrifice required of Abraham was not alone for his own good, nor solely for
the benefit of succeeding generations; but it was also for the instruction of the sinless
intelligences of heaven and of other worlds. The field of the controversy between
Christ and Satan-the field on which the plan of redemption is wrought out-is the
lesson book of the universe....
"It had been difficult even for the angels to grasp the mystery of redemption-to
comprehend that the Commander of heaven, the Son of God, must die for guilty man.
When the command was given to Abraham to offer up his son, the interest of all
heavenly beings was enlisted. With intense earnestness they watched each step in the
fulfillment of this command. When to Isaac's question, 'Where is the lamb for a burnt
offering?' Abraham made answer, 'God will provide himself a lamb'; and when the
father's hand was stayed as he was about to slay his son, and the ram which God had
provided was offered in the place of Isaac-then light was shed upon the mystery of
redemption, and even the angels understood more clearly the wonderful provision
that God had made for man's salvation."-Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 154, 155.

4. How can we become children of Abraham? Galatians 3:7; John 8:39.

HOW GOD RECONCILED MAN UNTO HIMSELF June 14

5. How was the love of God manifested toward us? John 3:16; Romans 5:8-10.

"But this great sacrifice was not made in order to create in the Father's heart a
love for man, not to make Him willing to save. No, no! 'God so loved the world, that
He gave His only-begotten Son.' John 3:16. The Father loves us, not because of the
great propitiation, but He provided the propitiation because He loves us. Christ was
the medium through which He could pour out His infinite love upon a fallen world.
'God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself.' 2 Corinthians 5:19. God suf-
fered with His Son. In the agony of Gethsemane, the death of Calvary, the heart of In-
finite Love paid the price of our redemption."-Steps to Christ. pp. 13, 14.

6. What did Christ accomplish through His life and death? 2 Corinthians 5:19;
Romans 3:23-26; Ephesians 1:7.

"God did not change His law, but He sacrificed Himself, in Christ, for man's re-
demption. 'God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself.' 2 Corinthians
5:19.
"The law requires righteousness-a righteous life, a perfect character; and this
man has not to give. He cannot meet the claims of God's holy law. But Christ, coming
to the earth as man, lived a holy life, and developed a perfect character. These He of-
fers as a free gift to all who will receive them. His life stands for the life of men. Thus
they have remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God. More than

- 42-
this, Christ imbues men with the attributes of God. He builds up the human character
after the similitude of the divine character, a goodly fabric of spiritual strength and
beauty. Thus the very righteousness of the law is fulfilled in the believer in
Christ."-The Desire of Ages, p. 762.

ON THE CROSS June 15

7. While being brutally treated, for whom did Christ pray that they might be
forgiven? Luke 23:34.

"That prayer of Christ for His enemies embraced the world. It took in every sin-
ner that had lived or should live, from the beginning of the world to the end of time.
Upon all rests the guilt of crucifying the Son of God. To all, forgiveness is freely of-
fered. 'Whosoever will' may have peace with God, and inherit eternal life."-The
Desire of Ages, p. 745.

8. Who acknowledged Christ as 'Lord' and was converted while being cruci-
fied? Luke 23:39-43.

"The thieves crucified with Jesus were placed 'on either side one, and Jesus in
the midst.' This was done by the direction of the priests and rulers. Christ's position
between the thieves was to indicate that He was the greatest criminal of the three.
Thus was fulfilled the scripture, 'He was numbered with the transgressors.' Isaiah
53:12. But the full meaning of their act the priests did not see. As Jesus, crucified
with the thieves, was placed 'in the midst,' so His cross was placed in the midst of a
world lying in sin. And the words of pardon spoken to the penitent thief kindled a
light that will shine to the earth's remotest bounds.
"With amazement the angels beheld the infinite love of Jesus, who, suffering the
most intense agony of mind and body, thought only of others, and encouraged the
penitent soul to believe. In His humiliation He as a prophet had addressed the
daughters of Jerusalem; as priest and advocate He had pleaded with the Father to
forgive His murderers; as a loving Saviour He had forgiven the sins of the penitent
thief."-The Desire of Ages, pp. 751, 752.

THE POWER OF THE CROSS June 16

9. What figure remains for us as a power to overcome? Galatians 6: 14; 1 Corin-

thians 1:18,23,24; John 12:32. How powerful is the blood of Christ, even
today, in behalf of those who believe in Him? Hebrews 9:14; 1 John 1:7;
Revelation 12: 11.

"The theme that attracts the heart of the sinner is Christ, and Him crucified. On
the cross of Calvary, Jesus stands revealed to the world in unparalleled love. Present
Him thus to the hungering multitudes, and the light of His love will win men from
darkness to light, from transgression to obedience and true holiness. Beholding Jesus
upon the cross of Calvary arouses the conscience to the heinous character of sin as
nothing else can do." -Christ Our Righteousness, p. 77.

-43 -
10. What kind of faith is required of those who are saved under the threefold
message? Revelation 14:12; 1 Corinthians 2:16 (last part). What will be the
song of the redeemed? Revelation 7:13, 14; 14:1-3; 15:3.

"The spirit of Christ should so control our character and conduct, that our in-
fluence may ever bless, encourage, and edify. Our thoughts, our words, our acts,
should testify that we are born of God and that the peace of Christ rules in our hearts.
In this way we throw around us the gracious radiance of which the Saviour speaks
when he enjoins upon us to let our light shine forth to men. Thus we are leaving a
bright track heavenward."-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 75.
"Beyond the cross of Calvary, with its agony and shame, Jesus looked forward to
the great final day, when the prince of the power of the air will meet his destruction in
the earth so long marred by his rebellion. Jesus beheld the work of evil forever ended,
and the peace of God filling heaven and earth."-The Desire of Ages, p. 490.

THE RESURRECTION June 19

1. What did Jesus use to prove His identity to two disciples on the way to Em-
maus and later at Jerusalem? Luke 24:30-32.

"The simple evening meal of bread is soon prepared. It is placed before the guest,
who bas taken His seat at the head of the table. Now He puts forth His hands to bless
the food. The disciples start back in astonishment. Their companion spreads forth
His hands in exactly the same way as their Master used to do. They look again, and
10, they see in His hands the print of nails. Both exclaim at once, It is the Lord Jesus!
He has risen from the dead!"-The Desire of Ages, p. 800.

What would not have been possible without His resurrection? 1 Corinthians
15:14-18.

"When Jesus met with His disciples, He reminded them of the words He had
spoken to them before His death, that all things must be fulfilled which were written
in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the Psalms concerning Him. 'Then
opened He their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures, and said
unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from

in His name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these

THE ASCENSION June 21

5. What message did Christ convey to Mary shortly after His resurrection?
John 20:17.

"Jesus refused to receive the homage of His people until He had the assurance
that His sacrifice was accepted by the Father. He ascended to the heavenly courts,
and from God Himself heard the assurance that His atonement for the sins of men had
been ample, that through His blood all might gain eternal life. The Father ratified the
covenant made with Christ, that He would receive repentant and obedient men, and
would love them even as He loves His Son. Christ was to complete His work, and
fulfill His pledge to 'make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the
golden wedge of Ophir.' Isaiah 13:12. All power in heaven and on earth was given to
the Prince of life, and He returned to His followers in a world of sin, that He might im-
part to them of His power and glory." - The Desire of Ages. p. 790.

THE INTERCESSION June 22

7. What order of priesthood and mediation was established following the end of
the Levitical ministry? Psalm 110:4; Hebrews 4:14-16; 7:11.

"When Christ ascended to heaven, the sense of His presence was still with His
followers. It was a personal presence, full of love and light. Jesus, the Saviour, who
had walked and talked and prayed with them, who had spoken hope and comfort to
their hearts, had, while the message of peace was still upon His lips, been taken up
from them into heaven, and the tones of His voice had come back to them, as the
cloud of angels received Him-'Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the
world.' Matthew 28:20. He had ascended to heaven in the form of humanity. They
knew that He was before the throne of God, their Friend and Saviour still; that His
sympathies were unchanged; that He was still identified with suffering humanity. He
was presenting before God the merits of His own precious blood, showing His wound-
ed hands and feet, in remembrance of the price He had paid for His redeemed. They
knew that He had ascended to heaven to prepare places for them, and that He would
come again and take them to Himself."-Steps to Christ. pp. 73, 74.

8. Where did John behold Jesus and what was He doing? Revelation 4:1, 2, 5:
3:21; Hebrews 8:1-6.

"He 'shall sit and rule upon His throne; and He shall be a priest upon His throne.'
Not now 'upon the throne of His glory'; the kingdom of glory has not yet been
ushered in. Not until His work as a mediator shall be ended will God 'give unto Him

- 46-
the throne of His father David,' a kingdom of which 'there shall be no end.' Luke
1:32,33. As a priest, Christ is now set down with the Father in His throne. Revelation
3:21. Upon the throne with the eternal, self-existent One is He who 'hath borne our
griefs, and carried our sorrows,' who 'was in all points tempted like as we are, yet
without sin,' that He might be 'able to succor them that are tempted.' 'If any man sin,
we have an advocate with the Father.' Isaiah 53:4; Hebrews 4:15; 2:18; 1 John 2:1.
His intercession is that of a pierced and broken body, of a spotless life. The wounded
hands, the pierced side, the marred feet, plead for fallen man, whose redemption was
purchased at such infinite cost." - The Great Controvel'sy, p. 416.

THE INTERCESSION (continued) June 23

9. What place was opened in the heavenly sanctuary in 1844 and what change
took place in the ministry of Christ? Revelation 15:5; 11:19; Daniel 7:13;
Malachi 3:1.

"[T]he announcement that the temple of God was opened in heaven and the ark of
His testament was seen points to the opening of the most holy place of the heavenly
sanctuary in 1844 as Christ entered there to perform the closing work of the atone-
ment." - The Great Controversy, p. 433.

10. While Christ is ministering in our behalf in heaven, what work is to be done
for us on earth? Malachi 3:2, 3.

"Says the prophet: 'Who may abide the day of His coming? and who shall stand
when He appeareth? for He is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: and He shall
sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and He shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge
them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteous-
ness.' Malachi 3:2, 3. Those who are living upon the earth when the intercession of
Christ shall cease in the sanctuary above are to stand in the sight of a holy God
without a mediator. Their robes must be spotless, their characters must be purified
from sin by the blood of sprinkling. Through the grace of God and their own diligent
effort they must be conquerors in the battle with evil. While the investigative judg-
ment is going forward in heaven, while the sins of penitent believers are being removed
from the sanctuary, there is to be a special work of purification, of putting away of
sin, among God's people upon earth. This work is more clearly presented in the
messages of Revelation 14. When this work shall have been accomplished, the
followers of Christ will be ready for His appearing." - The Great Controversy. p. 425.
