IMPLEMENTATION OF SIT: A LIGHTWEIGHT CRYPTOGRAPHIC

ALGORITHM FOR SECURE IOT

ABSTRACT
The Internet of Things (IoT) shall enable the users to remotely access the devices, objects and
sensors. The hardware to be used in the upcoming promising technology of sensor networks
are very resource constrained and prone to attacks. This paper focuses on the implementation
of recently proposed low cost encryption algorithm named SIT on the Field Programmable
Gate Array (FPGA). FPGA due to their parallel architecture and flexibility are preferred by
many researchers to test their design and measure the performance improvements with the
conventional sequential hardware modules. Sit follows the block cipher structure and is
composed of five rounds. Its implementation on the FPGA achieved a throughput of 4899Mbps
for encryption while using only 711 logic elements.

INTRODUCTION:

Internet of Things introduces the application of acutely connected tools and basis to use a data
accumulated by installed actuator and sensors in machineries and additional physical object.
Internet of thing is relied upon to banquet quickly finalized in approaching years and this
merger is another measure of managements that enhances the personal approval of the buyer
also, efficiency of undertaking, foundation of an open doorway that GSMA indicates as
'Associated Living '. For purchasers, internet of things perhaps convey system that drastically
improve energy productivity , curity , preparation, wellbeing and numerous distinct component
of sidereal 24-hour interval by day life. For structures, Internet of things supports transcription
that increase staple management and profitableness in collecting, horticulture, retails and
various chunks. M2M arrangements a subsection of the internet of things now apply distant
systems to associate tools to one other and the net, with insignificant straight human
intervention, to carry organizations that addresses an issues of a wide variation of concern. The
advancements on the digital information in computer and telecommunication has opened a new
range of possibilities which were not possible due to many reasons especially lack of efficiency.
Most of the interaction between users themselves and between users and is carried out digitally.
A boost to this was given with the advent of internet. The digital systems are almost insensitive
to noise, therefore, the data can be sent to long distances. Also the modification or copying the
information can be done with quality loss. Having so many advantages there are also many
disadvantages of the digital communication. It is not possible to enclose the digital information
in an envelope and put a seal, if seal is tampered, the change in information is sensed. Instead
the digital information should be such that protects itself.
FPGA (FIELD PROGRAMMABLE GATED ARRAY):

FPGA, Field Programmable Gate Array, is a semiconductor integrated circuit, that can be even
programmed in the field after the manufacturing hence the name suggests field programmable.
The three basic elements of the FPGA are the I/O cells, logical blocks and the interconnecting
resources.

These are predetermined and ready to use logic blocks present which can work according to
the need of the designer, hence it can be considered as an FPGA being an empty slate in which
the built-in features performs the task as the programmer requires. The capability of the FPGA
to be reprogrammed makes it completely different from others, i.e. it completely takes a
different form once the programming and the design is changed helping the designers use the
same board to manoeuvre different logics and methodologies.

FPGA due to its re-configurability and ability to perform instructions in parallel. Using the full
loop unroll technique the throughput of the design is increased. In this paper we implemented
the SIT algorithm on Altera FPGA and a throughput of 4650Mbps was achieved. The design
used only 711 logic elements (LE). The throughput to area ratio of 6.890Mbps was achieved
