Welcome to Pollen volume 20!

For those of you just joining us…a quick recap of just what Pollen is…

“Pollen is a community comprised of civic-minded connectors who share ideas, career and civic
engagement opportunities and peer-to-peer recognition to create positive impact and personal and
professional growth for its members.”

Pollen volume 1 was shared with members on December 4, 2009. We’ve since grown to 1,544

Before we begin our regularly scheduled programming, we’d like to share the results from the Pollen Poll
we conducted in our last issue regarding the MN Governor’s Race. Thanks to the 267 member of Pollen
who participated in this social, non-scientific, survey exercise.

Results (collected from 9/24/10 to 10/4/10):

Question 1: Who do you support as the next Governor of the State of Minnesota?

Tom Horner – 130 votes (49.8%)

Mark Dayton – 83 votes (31.8%)

Tom Emmer – 41 votes (15.7%)

Other – 7 votes (2.7%)

Question 2: Who do you believe will actually be elected the next Governor of the
State of Minnesota?

Mark Dayton – 133 votes (51.0%)

Tom Emmer – 77 votes (29.5%)

EVENTS:

Community Action hosts Kitchen Table, an honest dialogue between leaders and decision-makers
regarding how lives are affected by poverty, on October 12th. The first in a series, this program
focuses on K-12 Education and includes discussion with Saint Paul Public Schools Superintendent Silva
and other education decision-makers. Community Leaders will provide perspective on the hard issues
facing them as students and parents. Our goal is a discussion that leads to education and action. For

The Minneapolis Foundation “Fourth Generation” hosts its next event on October 19th for a
conversation with Elizabeth Hinz, Minneapolis Public School District Liaison for Homeless and Highly
Mobile Youth. Ms. Hinz will provide background on the issue of homeless youth, its implications within
schools and the long-term impact, and how it is being addressed locally. Additional event details here:

The LEAD Project is hosting PhilanthroFAIR II at Thom Pham’s Wondrous Azian Kitchen on
Wednesday, October 20th. This event brings together nonprofits that are looking for motivated,
passionate volunteers. All nonprofits have skill-based volunteer opportunities/board of director/advisory
board openings. This is a great way to learn about community needs and how to get involved, while
