Lesson No. I-2nd October, I948.

THE GREATEST PROPHETIC PERIOD

Memory Verse: "Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that
sleepest" and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee
light." Eph. 5 :I4.
I Which is the greatest time prophecy? What took
place at the end of this prophecy? Dan. 8:I4.·
2. What was told the prophet regarding the 2,300 days?
What command was he given? Dan. 8 :26.
3. How long was the prophecy to remain seaJ1ed? What
would many do? Dan. I2 :4,
4. When was the "time of the end " to begin?
ANSWER: "The coming of Christ could not take place
before that time. Paul cQvers with his caution the whole
of the Christian dispensation down to the year 1798. It
is this side of that time that the message of Christ's second
coming is to be proclaimed." (G. C. 356 :1).
5. What was the starting point of th'e great period?
Which year was it to end? Dan. 9:24=25.
"In the seventh chapter of Ezra the decree is found.
In its completest form it was issued by Artaxerxes, king of
Persia, B.C. 457." (G. C. 326:3).

"Thus far every specification of the prophecies is

strikingly fulfilled, and the beginning of the seventy weeks
is fixed beyond question at B.C. 457, and their expiration
in A.D. 34. From this data there is no difficulty in finding
the termination of the 2300 days. The seventy weeks-
2DO days- having been cut off from the 2300, there were
1810 days remaining. After the end of 490 days, the 1810
(lays were still to be fulfilled. From A.D. 34, 1810 years
extend to 1844. Consequently the 2300 days of Dan. 8:14
terminate in 1844. At the expiration of this great proph-
etic llcriou, upon the testimony of the angel of God, 'the
sHnctuary shall be cleansed.' Thus the time of the cleans-
ing o~ the sanctuary-which was almost universally be-
lieved to take place at the second advent-was definitely
11ointec1 out." (G.C. 328 :2.).
6. What event occurred at the end of th'e 2300 days?
Rev. II:I9.
-4-

7. What prominent events follow? Rev. 1I.:I8.

"I saw that the anger of the nations, the wrath of
God, and the time to judge the dead, were separate and
distiuct, one following the other, also that Michael had not
stood up, and that the time of trouble, such as never was,
had not yet commenced." (E.vV. 36 :1).
8. What solemn scene did th'e prophet witness, and where
did it commence? Dan. 7:9=I3.
9. With whom does the judgment begin? I Pet. 4 :I7.
IO. Who :only will be saved? What happens to the rest?
Ezek. 9:I=6.
"The day ot God's vengeance is just U110n us. The
seal of Goel will be placed upon the forebellds of tbose on!y
who sigh and cry for the abominations done in the land.
Those who link in sympathy witl.l the world are eating and
drinking ,vith tl.le drunken, and will surely be destroyed
with tl.le workers of iniquity. "'1'he eyes of the Lord are
oyer the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers:
but the face ·of the Lord is flg'flinst them that do evi!."
(f. T. 212:3).

Lesson No.2-9th OctOber, I948.

MODERN REVIVALS
Memory Verse: "Some fell upon stony places, where
they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up,
because th'ey had no deepness of earth: And when the sun
was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root,
they withered away." Matt. I3 :5=6.
. I. Who was the ,herald of t.he great reformation?
ANSWER: "Foremost among those who were called to
lpfld the church from the darlmess of popery j uto the light
oj' a purer faith, stood Martin Luther. Zealous, arc1ent, find
devoted, knowing no fear but the feflr of Go(l mlll ack-
nowledging no foundation for religious faith but the Holy
Scriptures, Luther was the man for his time; through him,
God accomplished a great work for the reformation of the
church and the enlightment of the world." (G.C. 120 :1):
2. Did the Reformation end with Luther? Did he h'ave
all the light? What must we not forget?
-5-
NOTE: '1'he work of Reformation is continual and will
be developed until the end of time.
ANSWER: "The Re:l'ormation did not, as many sup-
pose, end with Luther. It is to be continued to the close
of this world's history. Luther had a great work to do in
reflecting to others the light which God had permitted to
shine upon him; yet he did not receive all the light which
was to be given to the world. From that time to this, new
light has been continually shining upon the Scriptures, and
new truths have been constantly unfolding." (G.O. 148 :4).
3. How did Satan oppose the advance of this work? What
do we see to=day?
ANSWIDR: "The prince of evil contests every inch of
ground' over which God's people advance in their journey
toward the heavenly city. In all the history of the church,
no reformation has been carried forward without encoun-
tering serious obstacles. Thus it was in Paul's day."
(G.O. 396 :1).
NOTE: In these days, so to-day, Satan has great power
over the minds of men, causing them to resist and fight
against reformation.
4. When the scriptures are sealrohed diligently and
preached in sincerity, what will be the rei'>u1t? II Tim.,
4:I=3.
ANSWIDR: "Wherever the word of God has been faith-
fully preached, results have followed that attested its
divine origin. The Spirit 0:1' God accompanied the message
of His servants, and the word was with power. Sinners
felt their consciences quickened." (G.O. 46,1 :1).
5. Which power converts the sinner? What are the
fruits of true repentance?
ANSWER: "This is the result of the work of the Spirit
of God. There is no evidence of genuine repentance unless
it works reformation. If he restores the pledge, given
again that he had robbed, confess his sins, and love God
and his fellow-men, the sinner may be sure that he has
found peace witU God. Such were the effects that in former
years 1'ollowed seasons of religious awakening. Judged by
their fruits, they were known to be blessed of God in the
salvation of men and the uplifting of humanity." (G.O.
462:3).
6. How are many popular modern. revivals conducted?
What is the effect of such a work on its converts?
-6-
ANS'W'ER: "Popular revivals are too often carried by
appeals to the imagination, by exciting the emotions, by
gratifying the love for what is new and stmtling. Con-
verts thus gained have little desire to listen to Bible truth,
little interest in the testimony of prophets and apostles-
Unless a religious service has something of a sensational
character, it has no attractions for them. A message which
appeals to unimpassioned reason awakens no response. The
plain warnings of God's word, relating directly to their
eternal interests, are unheeded.'" (G.C. 463 :2).
7. What will be the first interest of a truly .converted
Sloul?
ANSWER: "With every truly converted soul the rela-
tion to God and to eternal things will be the great topic of
life. But where, in the popular churches ot to-day, is the
spirit of consecration to God? 'l'he converts do not re-
nounce their pride and love of the world. They are no
more willing to deny self, to take up the cross, and follow
the meek and lowly Jesus, than before their conversion. Re-
ligion has become the sport of infidels and sceptic.s be-
cause so many who bear its name are ignorant of its prin-
ciples, The power of godliness has well-nigh departed from
many of the churches. Picnics, church theatricals, church
fnirs, fine houses, personal display, have banished thoughts
of God. Lands and goods and worldly occupations engross
the mind, and things of eternal interest receive hardly a
passing notice." (G.C.463:3).
8. What kind of revivals do we witness in the Christian
world to=day? What will be the result?
ANSWER: "In many of the revivals which have oc-
curred during the last halt century, the same influences
have been at work, to a greater or less degree, that will be
manifest in the more extensiYe movements of the future,
There is an emotional excitement, a mingling of the true
with the false, that is well adapted to mislead." (G.C.
464:2).
9. To what duty is the Christian called? What response
is made? What is written on front of the churches?
ANSWER: "They are called to suffer with Christ, but
they shrink from even reproach . . . Apostasy, apostasy,
apostasy, is engraven on the very front of every church;
and did they know it, and did they feel it, there might be
hope; but, alas! they cry, 'We are rich, and increased in
goods, and stand in need of nothing'." (G.C. 388 :1).
-7-
IO In which way will the sincere believers be gathered
from th'ese Churches?
ANSWER: "Notwithstanding the wide-spread declen-
sion of faith and piety, there are true followers of Christ
in these churches. Before the final visitation of God's
judgments upon the earth, there will be, among the people
of the Lord, such a revival of primitive godliness as has
not been witnessed since apostolic times. The Spirit and
power of God will be poured out upon His children. At
that time many will separate themselves from those
churches in which the love of this world has supplanted
love for God and His word. Many, both of ministers and
people, will gladly accept those great truths which God
bas caused to be proclaimed at this time, to prepare a
lleople for the Lord's second coming." (G.C. 464 :1).

Lesson NO.3-16th October, 1948

A GREAT RELIGIOUS REVIVAL
Memory Verse: "And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for
the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end."
Dan. 12:9.
I In connection with this 'prophecy 'of Dan. 12:9, when
did the preaching of the second coming of Christ be~
gin?
ANSWER: "But since 1798 the book of Daniel has
been unsealed, knowledb'e of the prophecies has increased
and many have proclaimed the solemn message of the
judgment neaL" (G.C. 356 :2).
2 How was the Advent Message symbolized? Who
controlled the work? Rev. 'loa, 2.
ANSWER: "An upright, honest-hearted farmer, who
had been led to doubt the divine' authorit3' of the Scrip-
tlll'es, yet who sincerely desired to know the truth, was
the man specially chosen of God to lead out in the procla-
mation of Christ's second coming. Like many other re-
formers, William Miller had in early life battled with
poverty, and had thus learned the great lessons of energy
.and self-denial." (G.C. 317 :1).
"Like the great Reformation of the sixteenth century,
the Advent Movement appeared in different countries of
Christendom at the same time. In b·oth Europe and
America, men of faith and prayer were led to the stUdy of
the prophecies, and tracing down the inspired record, they
-8-
saw convincing evidence that the end of all things was at
hand. In different lands there were isolated bodiefj of
Christians who, solely by the study of the Scriptures, ar-
rived at the belief that the Saviour's advent was near."
(G.C.357:1).
3. What oath does the angel take? What reference is
made to prophetic time? Rev. IO:S, 7.
4· How does God lead His people in the plan of Ref,orma~
tion?
ANS'WER: "He led them on, step by step, as they
could bear it. They were not prepared to receive all the
light at once. Like the full glory of the noontide sun to
those who have long dwelt in darkness, it would, if pre-
sented, have caused them to .turn away. 'l'herefore He re-
vealed it to the leaders little by little, as it could be re-
ceived .by the people. From century to century, other
faithful workers were to follow, to lead the people on still
farther in the path of reform." (G.C. 103 :1).
S. What kind of persons does God choose for this special
work? How long will the Reformation continue?

ANS'VER: "Whatever may be their profession, it is

only those who are world-servers at heart that act from
policy rather than' principle in religious things. We should
cllOose the right because it is right, and leave consequences
with God. To men of principle, faith, and daring, the
world is indebted for its great reforms. By such men the
work of reform for this time must be carried forward."
(G.C. 460:2).
6 Why does 'Christ delay His coming? What does God
do as a result?
ANS'VER: "It was· not the will of God that Israel
should wander forth years in the wilderness; He desired to
read them directly to the land of Canaan, and establish
there a holy, happy people. But 'they could not enter in
becaJse of unbelief.' Because of their backsliding and
apostasy, they perished in the desert, and others were
raised up to enter the promised land. In like manner, it
was not the will of God that the coming of Christ should
be so long delayed, and His people shoulc1 remain so many
years in this world of sin and sorrow. But unbelief sep-
arated them from God. As they refused to do the work
which He had appointed them, otl~ers were raised up to
proclaim the message. In mercy to the world, Jesus delayg
His coming, that sinners may have an opportunity to hear
-9-
the warning, and find in Him a shelter before the wrath
of God shall be poured out." (G.C. 458 :1).
7. What is the basis of true revival? What will be its
effect?
ANS~TER: "It is only as the law of God is restored
t? its r~ghtfnl posit~on that there can be a revival of primi-
tive faIth anfl godlmess among His professed people. 'Thus
saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for
the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein.
and ye shall find rest for your souls'." (G.C. 478:3).
8. What is the reason for a Reformation to=day?
ANSWER: "He will close up the period of probation
until the message shall be more distinctly proclaimed. l.'he
law of God is to be magnified; its claims must be presented
in their true, sacred character, that the people may ,be
brought to decide for or against the truth. Yet the work
will be cut short in righteousness. The message of Christ's
righteousness is to sound from one end of the earth to the
other to prepare the way of the Lord· This is the glory
of God, which closes the work of the third angel." (6 T.
19 :1).
9. Who does God use for the restoration of His church'?
ANS'WER: "The reason why He does not oftener
choose men of learning and high position to lead out in
reform movements, is that they trust to their creeds.
theories, and theological systems, and feel no need to be
taught of God. Only those who have a personal con-
nection with the Source of wisdom are able to understand
or explain the Scriptures. Men who have little of the
learning of the schools are sometimes called to declare the
truth, not because they are unlearned, but because they are
not too self-sufficient to be taught of God. They learn in
the school of Christ, and their humility and obedience make
them great." (G.C. 456 :0).

Lesson No. 4-23rd October, 1948.

THE FIRST ANGEL'S MESSAGE
Memory Verse: "And r saw another angel fly in the
midst of heaven, h'aving the everlasting gospel to preach
unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation,
and kindred, and tongue, and people, saying with a loud
yoke, Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His
judgment is come; and worship Him that made heaven,
-10-
and earth, <:nd the sea, llnd the fountains of waters." Rev.
I4:6, 7.
I. Where is the first angel's message to be found? When
did it begin? What'is his message? Rev. I4:6, 7.
ANS'WER: "In 1833, Miller received a license to
preach, £lom the Baptist Church, of which he was a mem-
ber, A large number of the ministers of his denomination
also appro,ed his 1Yo:'k. and it was with their formal sanc-
tion that he continued his labours." (G,O.332:2).
2 What was the duty of the priest before the day of
atonement? Lev. 23 :24:27.
NOTE: This ceremonial atonement is typical of the
jndgment in the last days. The ten days represent ten
years. ~'he first angel's message must be proclaimed ten
years before the commencement of the investigative judg-
ment.
3. Since when was the gospel preached? Wh'at special
part of the Gospel Message should be proclaimed now?
ANSWER: "The message itself sheds light as to the
time when this movement is to take place. It is declared
t::J be a part of the 'eYe~'lasting gospel;' and it announces
the opening of the judgment. The message of sah-ation
}las been preached in all ages; but this message is a part
of the gospel which cou'd be jH'oelaimed only in the last
,days, for only then would it be true that the hour of judg·
ment had come." (G.O.355:3).
4. W,ho was called to preach the first angel's message?
ANSWER: "To William Miller and his co-laborers it
was given to preach the warning in America. This country
became the centre of the great Advent Movement. It was
here that the prophecy of the first angel's message had its
most direct fulfilment. The writings of Miller and his
associates were carried to distant lands. Wherever mis-
sionaries had penetrated in all the world, were sent the
glad tidings of Ohrist's speedy return. Far and wide spread
the message of the everlasting gOf>pel, 'Fear God, and give
glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come'."
(G.O. 368:1). •
5. What had 'William Miller to meet? Who rose against
him? What did the ministers endeavour to do?
ANSWER: "Yet he did not prosecute his work without
bitter opposition. As with earlier Reformers, the truths
-11-
which he presented were not received with favour by
popular religious teachers." (G.C.335:3).
"Earnest were the efforts put forth to draw away the
minds of the people from the subject of the second advent.
It was made to appear a sin, something of which men
SllOUld be ashamed, to study the prophecies which relate to
the coming o,f Christ and the end of the world. Thus the
popular ministry undermined faith in the word .of God.
Their teaching made men infidels, and many took license
to walk after their own ungodly lusts. Then the authors of
the evil charged it all upon Adventists." (G.C. 336 :1).
6. Among wh'Om did the movement begin? Where did
they hold meetings?
ANS'iVER: "The movement was chiefly among the
lower class, and it was in the humble dwellings of the
labourers that the people assembled to heal' the warning.
The child-preachers themselves were mostly poor cot-
tagers." (G.C.366:3).
7. What part had the lay~men in this movement? How
did the ministers of the popular churches react to it?
ANS",,'ER: "But as the message from heaven could
find a place in the hearts of but few of the professed minis-
ters of Christ, the· work was laid upon many who were'
not preachers. Some left their fields to sound the message"
while others were called from their shops and their mer-
chandise, And even some professional men were compelled
to leave their professions to engage in the unpopular work
of giving the first angel's message." (E.vV. 232 :2).
"Ministers who would not accept this saying message
themselves hindered those who would have received it. The
blood of souls is upon them. Preachers and people joined
to oppose this message from heaven, and to persecute Wil-
liam Miller and those who united with him in the work.
Falsehoods were circulated to injure his influence.'" (E. W.
234 :1).
8. What did the ministers keep repeating?
ANS'N:PJR: "A glorious light then rested down upon
tl:ese companies, to enlighten all who would receive it.
Some of those who were in'darkness received the light and
rejoiced. Others resisted the light from heaven, saying"
that it was sent to lead them astray. The light passed
away from them, and they were left in darkness. Those
who had recein'a tIl(' light from Jesus joyfully cherished
the increase of precious light which was shed upon them.
-12-
Their faces beamed with holy joy, while their gaze was
directed upward to Jesus with intense interest, and their
voices were heard in harmony with the voice of the angel,
'Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His
judgment is come.' As they raised this cry, I saw those
who were in darkness thrusting them with side and with
shoulder. Then m!1ny who cherished the sacred light,
broke the cords WhICh confined them, and stood out sepa-
rated from those companies. As they were doing this,
men belonging to the different companies and revered by
them passed through, some with pleasing words, and others
with wrathful looks and threatening gestures, and fastened
the cords which were weakening. 'l'hese men were con-
stantly saying, 'God is with us. 'Ve stand in the light. We
have truth.' I inquired who these men were, and was told
they were ministers and leading men who had rejected the
light themselves, and were unwilling that others should re-
ceive it." (E.W. 240 :2).
9. Did the professed churches accept the message?
What experience was repeated at this time?
ANSWER: "But the churches generally did not accept
the warning. 'l'heir ministers, who, as 'watchmen unto
the house of Israel,' should have been the first to discern
the tokens of Jesus' coming, had failed to learn the truth,
either from the testimony of the prophets or from the signs
of the times. As worldly hopes and ambitions filled the
heart, love for God and faith in His word had grown cold;
and when the advent doctrine was presented, it only
aroused their prejudice and unbelief. The fact that the
message was, to a great extent, preached by laymen, was
urged as an .argument against it. As of old, the plain tes-
timony of God's word was met with the inquiry, 'Have any
of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed?' " (G.C. 380:1).
IO. Why was the heavenly messenger sent? What waS'
revealed?
ANSWER: "The message which God had sent for the
testing and purification of the church revealed all too
surely how great was the number who had set their affec-
tions on this world rather than upon Christ. The ties
which bound them to earth were stronger than the attrac-
tions heavenward. They chose to listen to the voice of
worldly wisdom, and turned away from the heart-search-
ing message of truth." (G.C. 380 :1).
II. What may the sincere seeker for truth always expect.
II Tim. 3: n.
-13-
ANSWER: "Many were persecuted by their unbe-
lieving brethren. In order to retain their position in the
church, some consented to be silent in regard to their hope;
but others felt that loyalty to God forbade them thus to
hide the truths which He had committed to their trust. Not
a few were cut off from the fellowship of tile church for
no other reason than expressing their belief in the coming
,of Christ. Very precious to those who bore this trial of
their faith were the words of the prophet, 'Your brethren
that hated you, that cast you out for My name's, sake, said,
Let the Lord be glorified: but He shall appear to your joy,
:and they shall be ashamed'." (G.C. 372:3).
~2. What ma-dern parallel have we of this experience?
ANSWER: "Since the beginning of the war there has
been a division among the Adventist people. During the
duration of the war, the majority wanted to see the iun-
damental teachings set aside, >by force if necesary. The
others asked that the sanctification of Saturday (Sabbath)
be allowed them, even in these times of stress. The op-
posing faction finally brought about the disfellowshipment
from the Organisation of the followers of the original prin-
{)iples of their faith.' (A, & R. 24 : 7).
I3. How did the church treat those who received the
message?
ANSWER: "Those who dared not withhold from
{)thers the light which God had given them, were shut out
,of the churches; but Jesus was with them, and they were
joyful in the light of His countenance. They were pre-
pared to receive the message of the second angel." (E.W.
:237 : 1).
"Some ministers laid aside their sectarian views and
feelings, left their salaries and their churches, and united
in proclaiming the coming of Jesus. There were compara-
tively few ministers, however, who would accept this mes-
sage: therefore it was largely committed to humble lay-
men." (G.C. 368 : 2).

Lesson NO.5-30th October, 1948

THE SECOND ANGELJS MESSAGE
Memory Verse: "Wherefore come out from among
them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch 'not the
unclean thing; and I will receive you." II Cor. 6:17·
-H-
I. What is the message of the Second Angel? Rev. 14 : 8".
2. What does the term "Babylon" mean? Who are the
daughters?
ANSViTER: "In Revelation 14, the first angel is fol-
lowed by a second, proclaiming, 'Babylon is fallen, is fallen,
that great city, because she made all nations drink of the
wine of the wrath of her fornification.' The term 'Baby-
lon' is derived from 'Bable,' and signifies confusion. It is
employed in Scripture to designate the various forms of
false or apostate religion. In Revelation 17, Babylon is
represented as a woman, a figure which is used in the
Bible as the symbol of a church, a virtuous woman repre-
senting a pure church, and vile w-oman an apostate
church." (G.C. 381 : 1).
"Babylon is said to be 'the mother of harlots.' By her
daughters must ,be symbolized churches that cling to her
doctrines and traditions, and follow her example of saCl'i-
ficing the truth and the approval of God, in order to form
an unlawful alliance with the world." (G.C. 382 : 3).
3. To what are the unfaithful churches compared?
ANSvVIDR: "The unfaithfulness of the church to'
Christ in permitting her confidence and affection to be
turned from Him, and allowing the love of worldly things
to occupy the soul, is likened to the violation of the mar-
riage vow." (G.C. 381 : 3).
4. What words are addressed to the Christian in the New
Testament?
ANSViTER: "In the New Testament, language very
similar is addressed to professed Christians who seek the
friendship of the world aboYe the faYo~' of God. Says the
apostle James: 'Ye aldulterers and adulteresses, know yeo
not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God?
'Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the'
enemy of God'." (G.C.382:1).
5. How does a pure church become Babylon? To whom
does this Iword apply?
ANSiVER: ";\1any of the Protestant churches fire fol-
lowing Rome's example of iniquitous connection with 'the
kings of the earth'-the state churches, by their relation
to secular governments and other denominations, by seek-
ing the favour of the world. And the term 'Babylon'-
confusion-may be appropriately applied to these bodies.
all professing to deriYe their doctrines from the Bib!e, yet
-15-
-divided into almost innumerable sects, with widely con-
flicting creeds and theories." (G.C. 383 :1).
6 In which direction does the church go when she com~
promises with' the world? How does God consider His
church, when she compromises with the world?
ANSW"ER: "Conformity to worldly customs converts
the church to the world; it never converts the world to
Christ. Familiarity with sin will inevitably cause it to
appear less repulsive. He who chooses to associate with the
-servants of Satan, will soon cease to fear their master.
When in the way of duty we are brought into trial, as was
Daniel in the king's court, we may be sure that God will
protect us; but if we place ourselves under temptation, we
shall fall sooner or later." (G.C.509:1).
7. To whom did this message apply in 1844?
ANSWER: '''rhe message of Revelation 14, announc-
ing the fall of Babylon, must apply to religious bodies that
were once pure and have become corrupt." (G.C. 383 :0).
"This work did not stand in the wisdom and learning
of men, but in the power of God, and His saints who heard
the cry could not resist it. The most spiritual received
this message first, and those who had formerly led in the
work were the last to receive and help swell the cry, 'Be-
hold. the Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet Him'!"
(E.W. 238:2).
8. By the churches refusing the message of the First An~
gel, what happened when the second angel came?
What did they loose?
ANSWER: "As the churches refused to receive the
flrst angel's message they rejected the light from heaven,
and fell from the favour of Goel . . . . But the beloved of
God, who were oppressed, accepted the message, 'Babylon
is fallen,' and left the churches." (E.vV. 237 :2).
9. What did William Miller not see in the beginning?
ANSvVER: "'In all my labours,' said Miller, 'I never
had the desire or thought to establish any separate interest
from that of existing denominations, or to benefit one at
the expense of anotlJer . . . . I did not conceive there
would ever be any necessity for separate meetings." (G.C.
375:2).
10. What did the sincere believers cease to recognise?
With what result?
-16-
ANSWER: "'1'hey loved their chlE'ches, and were loath
to separate from them; .but as they saw the testimony of
God's word suppressed, and their right to investigate the
prophecies denieel, they felt that loyalty to God forbade
them to submit. Those who sought to shut out the testi-
mony of God's word, they could not regard as constituting
the church of Christ, 'the pillar and ground of the truth.'
Hence they felt themselves justified in separating from their
former connection. In the summer of 1844 about fifty
thousand ,,'ithdrew from the churches." (G.C. 376 :1).
u. Wh'at happens when present truth is resisted?
ANSWER: "vVherever the cause exists, the same re-
sults will follow. He who deliberately stifles his comric-
tions of duty because it interferes with his inclinations,
will finally lose the power to distinguish between truth and
error. The understanding becomes darkened, the conscience
callous, the heart hardened, and the soul is separated from
God." (G.C. 378 :2).
I2 What does the Spirit of Prophecy say will lead tio the
downfall of th'e church? What is the cause of con~
fusion in the church?

ANSvVER: "Let men become lifted up in pride, and

the Lord will not sustain them and keep them from falling.
Let a church become proud and boastful, not depending on
'God, not exalting His power, and that church will surely
be left by the Lord, to be brought down to the ground. Let
a people glory in wealth, intellect, knowledge, or in any-
thing but Christ, and they will soon be bronght to con-
fusion." (8 T. 127:2).

THE MIDNIGHT CRY
Memory Verse: "Behold, the Lord hath' proclaimed
unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion,
Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with
him, and his work before him.." . (lsa. 62:U).
I When did the midnight cry join the second angel's:
message? Wh'o were the true people of God in the'
Philadelphian church?
ANSWER: "Near to the close of the second angel's'
message, I saw a great light from heaven shining upon the
people of God. The rays of this light seemed bright as the
-17-
sun. -?-nd I heard the \oices of ange!s cryillg, "Behold,
the BrIdegroom cometh; go ye out to meet Him!" (E.vV.
238:1).
"In obediellce to this voice, a large number broke the
cords which bouud them, and leaving the companies that
were in darkness, joined those who had preYiously gained'
their freedom, and' joyfully united their yoices with them."
(E.W. 242:1).
2. How is the experience of the church of God at this
time symbolized? Matt. 25: I.
ANSWER: "The parable of the ten yirgins of Matt-
hew 25 also illustrates the experience of the Adventist
people." (G.C. 393:2).
3. How many groups are the ten virgins divided into?
What name is applied to each group? Matt. 25 :2.
4. What di.d one group neglect to do? Verses 3=4.
5. What did the Bridegroom do? How did the virgins
know of the delay? What did all the virgins now do?
Verse 5.
NOTE. The 1844 Advent movement fixed a time for
Christ's coming. 'When He did not come they were dis-
appointed.
6. W,hat is heard at midnight? What did the ten virgins
do? Verses 6, 7.
7. Wh'en does the difference between believer and uno
believer become apparent? What appeal did the un=
prepared virgins make? What was impossible for
the others to give them? Verses 8, 9.
ANSvVER: "It is in a crisis that character is revealed.
'When the earnest voice proclaimed at midnight, 'Behold,
the Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet Him,' and the
sleeping virgins were roused from their slumbers, it was
seen who had made preparation for the event. Both
parties were taken unawares; but one was IH'epared for
the emergency, and the other was found without prepara-
tion. So now, a sudden and unlooked for calamity, some·
tUng that brings the soul face to face with death, will
show whether there is any real faith in the promises of
God. It will show whether the soul is sustained ,by grace.
The great final test comes at the c:ose of human probation,
when it will be too late for the soul's need to be supplied."
(C.O.L. 412 :1).
-18-
S. 'Vhat were the foolish' virgins advise,d to do? To whom
were they directed to go? What happened while
away? Verses 9, 10.
KOTE: 'I'hey had not searched the Bible for themselves
and when the trial came they were not able to choose the
right "I\·ay. They were constrained to return to the leaders
for in;o;truction. In the meantime the Bl'idegroom came and
they were shut out.
9. What did they find when they returned? What did
they say? Matt.2S:u.
NO'I'E: Oh! what a delusion! So near to the door, but
too late! They remained outside fore,er. Oh! precious
soul, watch and pray. Quickly prepare and come before
the door shuts.
10. What experience is to be repeated again? Who did
not receive the mi.dnight cry? Whio were prepared to
receive the light?
ANSWER: "At the call, 'The Bridegroom cometh; go
ye out to meet Him,' the waiting ones 'arose and trimmed
their lamps,' they studied the word of God with an inten-
sity of interest before unknown . . . . It was not the most
talented, but the most humble and devoted, who were the
first to hear and obey the call. Farmers left their crops
standing' in the fields, mechanics laid down their tools, and
with tears and rejoicing went out to gh'e the warning.
'I'h.ose who had formerly led in the cause were among the
Iftst to join in this movement. The churches in general
closed their doors against this message, and a large com-
pany of those who received it withdrew from their con-
nection. In the providence of God, this proclamation united
with the Recond angel's message, and gave power to that'
work." (G,C. 402 :1).
II What ~nswer is given to those who came too late?
Verse 12.
12 What warning is given to all? Verse 13·
NOTE: 'We must be ready to-day, not to-morrow.

THE THIRD ANGEL'S MESSAGE
Memory Verse: "Fear none of those things which thou
sh!ilt suffer: behold, the ~evil shall cast some of you into
prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation
-19-
ten days: be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee
a crown of life." Rev. 2:10. '

Ing IS gIven? Rev. I4 :9=II.

2 Do all denominations claim to be the remnant people?

What are the characteristics of the true remnant
people of God? Rev. I4 :12.
ANSvV]]]R: "These truths, as presented in Revelation
14. in connection with the 'everlasting gospel,' will distin-
gUIsh the church of Christ at the time of His appearing.
~~~r:sa;.~et~:~uI;h~i ~e~;h:~:f~~~:~~~~~~~si~t~f~:n~~ci
the faith of Jesus.' And this message is the last to be given
before the coming of the Lord. Immediately following its
proclamation, the Son of man is seen by the prophet com-
ing in glory to reap the hanest of the earth." (G.O. 453 :3).
3. What reference is made regarding this message? Why
is this the last message?
ANS'V]]]R: "There is no work in our' world so great,
so sacred, and so glorious, no work that God honours so
much as this gospel wo!·k. '1.'he message presented at this,
time is the last message of mercy for a fallen world. Those
who have the privilege of hearing this message, and who
persist in refusing to heed the warning, cast away their"
last hope of salvation. There will be no second proba-
tion." (6'1.'.19:2).
NOT]]]: :M:any interpret wrongly the term 'last' message
or 'final' message because they have not studied carefully
fa!' themselYes the prophecies. Many have studied to sup-
port and defend their own opinion. Such interpretations
bring confusion by making the prophecies contradict itself.
One should not forget that the light is always progressive,
anf1 those who do not advance with the li,e;ht find it very
difficult to understand, because they lack spiritual discern-
ment. The letter ki!leth, but the spirit giveth life.
4. What must we understand concerning the term 'last>
message or 'final' message?
NOTE: In several places the third angel's message is
culled the 'Inst' message because it is the message of mercy,
'Iyhich extends from 1844 to the close of probation. It is
thE' sealing message. At the close of probation comes the
p!::lg'IJes and the second appearing of Jesus Christ. In the
Testimonies the same term is used for the angel of Rev 18.
-20-
This message is the last. Which in reality is the last of
these two? According to the prophecy there are four en-
gels. Which is the first of the four? 'l'he one who comes
first. Which is the second? The one who comes next.
vl/hich is the third? The one who follows the second.
Which is the fourth? The one Who comes after the third.
"Which is the last of these four'! 'l'he one who appears last.
",Ve see that the Seventh Day Adventists haye received
three. In 1888 Sister White said the angel of Revelation
18:1 was 3'et future. Three and one makes how many?
5. How did the third angel unite with the first and second
angels? Did the lea:ders of the first and second mes=
sages unite with the third?
ANSvVTIJR: "They joined in the work of the third an-
gel, and raised their voices to proc!aim the solemn warning.
But few at first received it, yet the faithful continued with
energy to proclaim the message. Then I saw many em-
brace the message of the third ange!, and unite their voices
with those wto hacl first given tlle warning, and they
honourell GOll by obserying His sanctified rest-day." (E.W.
256 :1).
"Many who hacl led in the first and 'Iecond messages
now denied them, and there was division and confusion
throughout the body." (TIJ.W.257:0).
"My atttention was then called to William Miller . . .
As he beheld this, grief wasted his strength. I saw lead-
ing men watching him, and fearing lest he should receive
the third angel's message and the commandments of God.
And as he would lean toward the light from heaven, these
men would lay some plan to draw his mind away. A
human influence was exerted to keep him in darkness, and
to retain his influence among those who opposed the truth.
At length William Miller raised his voice against the light
from heaven." (TIJ.W. 257 :1).
NOTE: The same bitter experience is repeated with
every message. There is sufficient evidence to show that
the third angel did not unite with the leaders of the first
and second" angel's message, but with the former messages.
We must follow our true leader, not man.
6. How many steps ,have we now? What is written con=
cerning those who change this foundation? On what
does the destiny of the church depend?
ANS",VTIJR: "I saw a company who stood well guarded
and firm, ghing no countenance to those who would un-
-21-
settle the established faith of the body. God looked upon
them with approbation. I was shown three steps,-the first,
second, and third angel's messages. Said my accompany-
ing angel, 'vVoe to him who shall move a block or stir a
pin of these messages. The true understanding of these
messages is of vital importance. The destiny of souls hangs
upon the manner in which they are received'." (E.vV.
258:3).
7. What warning is given concerning the foundation of
our faith?
ANSWER: '''l'here is to be no change in the general
features of our work. It is to stand as clear and distinct
as prophecy has made it. 'We are to enter into no confed-
eracy with the worIel, supposing that by so doing we coulcl
accomplish more. If any stand in the way, to hinder the
advancement of the work in the lines that God has ap-
pointed, they \l'ill displease God. No line of truth that has
made the Seventh-day Adventist people what they are, is
to be weakened. We have the old landmarks of truth, ex-
perience, and duty, and we are to stand firmly in defence
of our principles, in full view of the world.'" (6 T. 17 :2).
"The influence of these messages has been deepening
and widening, setting in motion the springs of action in
thousands of hearts, bringing into existence institutions of
leaming, pUblishing-houses, and health institutions. All
these are instrumentalities of God to co-operate in the grand
work represented by the first, second and third angels, the
work of warning the inhabitants of the world that Christ
is coming the second time with power and great glory."
(G T. 18:1).
NOTE: ,Ve see here a fulfilment of prophecy with the
Advent people, .but the spiritual power is lost because they
have departed from the platform.
9. Wh~at did Sister White see in vision? What intention
did another group h'ave?
Al'\'SWER: "I saw individuals approach the platform
and examine tlJe foundation. Some with rejoicing immedi-
ately stepped upon' it. Others commenced to find fault with
the foundation. 'l'hey wished improvements made, and then
the platform would be more 11erfect, and the people much
happier. Some stepped off the platform to examine it, and
declared it to be laid wrong." (KW. 259 :0).
IO. What class of people desire this alteration? What is
the name of this group? What motive inspires this
desire?
-22-
ANSWER: "Men will employ every means to make less-
prominent the difference between Seventh-day Adventists-
and observers of the first day of the week. A company
was presented before me under the name of Seventh-day
Adventists, who were advising that the ,banner, or sign,-
which makes us a distinct people, should not be held out so·
strikingly; for they claimed that this was not the best
policy in order to secure success to our institutions. But
this is not a time to haul down our colours to be ashamed
of our faith." (6 T. 144 :1). '
II What is repeated in every church? Do we see this in
operation to=day?
ANS WER: "Has not the same process been repeated
in nearly everJ' church calling itself Protestant? As its.
founders, those who possessed the true spirit of reform pass
away, their descendants come forward and 'new model the
cause'." (G.C. 385 :1).
I2. What experiences are we told the Adventists repeat?
ANSWER: "I have been shown that the spirit of the-
world is fast leavening the church. You are following the
same path as did ancient Israel. 'rhere is the same falling
away from your holy calling as God's peculiar people. You
are having fellowship with the unfruitful wOl'ks of dark-
ness. Your concord with unbelievers has provoked the'
Lord's displeasure. You know not the things that belong to
your peace, and they are fast being hid from your eyes.
Your neglect to follow the light will place you in a more-
unfavourable position than the Jews upon whom Christ
pronounced a woe." (5 T. 75:3).
"Satan's snares are laid for us as verily as they were
laid for the children of Israel just prior to their entrance
into the land of Canaan. 'Ve are repeating the history ot
that people. Lightness, vanitJr, love of ease and pleasure,
selfishness, and impurity are increasing among us." (5 T.
160:2).
I3. What decla:ration regarding the Advent Chur.ch was·
made in I902?
ANS-WER: "It is a solemn and teEible truth that many
who haye been zealous in proclaiming the third angel's-
message are now becoming listless and indifferent! 'l'he
line of demarcHtion between "'oddlings aUll many proi'essecl'
Christians is almost inc1istinguish!lJb~e. Many who once
were earnest AdYenVsts are conforming to the world,-tO'
it" lH'nctises, its customs, its selti>;hness. Instead of lead-
-23-
ing the world to render obedience to God's law the churc~
is uniting more and more closely with the wOl:ld in trans-
gression. Daily the church is becoming converted to the
world. How many professing Christians are slaves of'
mammon! Theil' indulgence of appetitie, their extravagant
expenditure of money for selfish gratification, greatly dis-
honours God." {(8 T. 118:4).
14. What testimony was given in 1900?
ANSWER: """Ve are in' danger of giving the third an-
gel's message in so indefinite a manner that it does not
impress the people. So many other interests are brought
in, that the very message which should be proclaimed with.
power becomes tame and voiceless." (6 T. 60:1).
THE MESSAGE OF REVELATION 18 : 1
Memory Verse: "But the path of the just is as the.
shining light, th'at shineth m{)re and more unto the perfect
day." Provo 4 a8.
I What follows the third angel's message? Rev. 18 :I~
With what parallel is his work compared?
ANSWER: "An angel visits the earth to see who are
prepared to welcome Jesus. But he can discern no tokens'
of expectancy. He hears no voice of praise and triumph,
that the period of Messiah's coming is at hand. The angel
hovers for a time over the chosen city and the temple where
the divine presence has been manifested for ages; but even..
here is the same indifference. The priests, in their pomp
and pride, are offering polluted sacrifices in the temple. The
Pharisees are with loud voices addressing the people, or
ma!dng boastful prayers at the corners of the streets. In-
the palaces of kings, in the assemblies of philosophers, in'
the schools of the rabbis, all are alike unmindful of the'
wondrous fact which has fi!led all heaven with joy and
praise.--that the Redeemer of men is about to appear upon-
the earth." (G.C. 314 :1).
2 What special duty have the leaders regarding th'e
church members? What will result from a neglect of
this work?
ANS'VER: "I know that a work must be done for the
!1eOllle, or lllany "'ill Hot be prepared to receive the light of
ti e an/l'd sent down from heayen t.o lighten the Whole'
ei\r~:l with His glory. Do not tb~:1k that you 'Yill ,be founel.
-24-
as vessels unto honour in the time of the latter rain to re-
ceive the g!ory of God, if you are lifting up your souls unto
vanity, speaking perverse things, in secret cherishing roots
of bitterness." (L.S. 327 :2) .
.3. Have the Leaders, under the third angel's message,
prepart,d a people fo receive that other angel of Rev.
I8:I according to th'e following statement?
'ANSWER: "vVe are to throw aside our narrow, selfish
plans, remembering that we have a work of the largest
magnitude and highest importance. In doing this work we
are sounding the first, second, and third angel's messages,
and are thus being prepared for the coming of that other
angel from heaven who is to lighten the earth with his
glory." (6 T. 406:5).
4. At what time does this IIngel appear?
ANS'WER: "The voice coming from heaven denotes
that it will be a message of power attended with heavenly
glory. How marked becomes the interposition of Heaven,
and how the agents for the accomplishment of God's work
multiply, as the great crisis approaches! This voice from
heaven is called' another' voice, showing that a new agency
i' here introduced. We now have five celestial messengers
expressly mentioned as engaged in this last religious re-
formation. There are the first, second, and third angel of
Chapter 14; fourth, the angel of verse one of this chapter;
and fifth, the agency indicated by the 'voice' of verse 4,
now before us. Three of these are already in operation.
The second angel has joined the first, and the third has
joined them. The first and second have not ceased. All
three now have the field. The angel of verse 1, is entering
upon his mission, as the conditions which call for his work
are supplied; and the divine call from heaven must take
place in connection with his work." (D. & R. 671:3),
5. How docs Sister White describe' this angel and his
work? What does it give to the third angel's mes=
sage?
ANS'VER: "Then I saw another mighty angel com-
missioned to descend to the earth, to unite his voice with
the third angel, and give power and force to his message.
Great l)OWer and glory were imparted to the angel, and as
he descended, the earth was lightened with his glory."
(E."-. 277 :1).
NOTE: The same work is rel)eated here as in every
message. The leaders refuse the message, because they see
-25-
no light, but danger, and declare the message as an old
error.
6. What message is repeated by this angel? When did
it appea;r?
ANSvVER: "The work of this angel comes in at the
right time to join in the last great work of the third angel's
message, as it swells to a loud cry. And the people of God
are thus prepared to stand in the hour of temptation, which
they are soon to meet. I saw a great light resting upon
them, and the3' united to fearlessly proclaim the third an-
gel's message." (E.W. 277 :1).
7. What will be preached by the fourth angel? When
will probation end?
A.l~SWER: "The Lord God of heayen will not send
upon the world His judgments for disobedience and trans-
gression, until He has sent His watchmen to give the warn-
ing. He will not close up the period of probation until the
message shall be more distinctly proclaimed. The law of
God is to be magnified; its claims must be presented in
their true, sacred character, that the people may be brought
to decide for or against the truth. Yet the work will be
cut short in righteousness. The message of Christ's right-
eousness is to sound from one end of the earth to the other
to prepare the way of the Lord. This is the glory of God,
which closes the work of the third angel." (6 T. 19 :1).
8. What solemn declaration came from the pen of the
Spirit of Prophecy in I9I4~I5, and what is the mes=
sage to be proclaimed at that time?
ANSWER: "And the message for to-day is: 'Babylon
the great is fallen, is fallen . .'. . Come out of her, My
people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye
receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto
heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities'." (P. & K.
188:1).
NOTE: At the beginning of the last war, just before
her death, Sister White gave a solemn and final warning to
the S.D.A. leaders, to receive and proclaim the Elijah mes-
sage of Rev. 18 :1, 5, in the light of the above quotation,
but they have rejected the message and chosen to serve
Baal. The angel of Rev. 18:1 commenced his work accord-
ing to the prophetic time. :Many to-day are in ignorance
of his work, others deny the commencement of the work,
Home do not apply it to the S.D.A. 1l10yemellts While others
say it is still future. The people are in confusion and the
-26-
leaders lack the power to come to a decision and make of
themselves a stumblingl block in the path of the true people
of God. The declaration of the Publishers regarding this
volume "Prophets and Kings" in ,which is found the above
quotation on the work of the Angel of Revelation 18:1 is
as follows: "That this volume, from the truly lamented
author, who died as the last chapters were preparing, may,
like its companion volumes by the, same author, be blessed
in bringing many precious souls to become worshippers ot
the true and only God, is the prayer of -The Publishers."
(P. & K. 8, 4). Sister White died on the 16th July, 1915.
During 1915 Sister White ws mostly confined to bed. The
book under discussion, "Prophets and Kings,'" was finished
between 1914/15, and it was at this time that the great
apostasy by the S'.D.A. people was revealed and the work
of the 'Reform' began.
"Some have turned from the message of the righteous-
ness of Christ to criticize the men, . . . . 'l.'he third angel's
message will not be comprehended, the light· which will
lighten the earth with its glory will be called a false light,
by those who refuse to 'walk in its advancing glory. The
work that might have been done, will be left undone by
tlw rejectors of truth, because of their unbelief. 'We en-
treat of you who oppose the light of truth, to stand out of
the way of 'God's people. Let Heaven-sent light shine
forth upon them in clear and steady rays"-"Review &
Herald, May 27, 1890." (O.O.R. 67 :4).
9. What prophecy is fulfilled to=day?
ANS'WER: "There is to be in the churches a wonder-
ful manifestation of the power of God, but it will not i move
upon those who have not humbled themselves before the
Lord, and opened the 'door of their: heart by confession and
repentance. In the manifestation of that power which
lightens the earth with the glory of God they will see only
something, which in their blindness they think dangerous,
something which will arouse their fears, and they will
brace themselves to resist it. Because the Lord does not
work according to their expectations and ideas, they will
oppose the work. 'Why, they say, should we not know
the Spirit of God, when we have been in the work so many
years?' Because they did not respond to the wflrnings,
the entreaties of the messages of God. but persistently
said, 'I am riCh, and increased with goods, and have need
of nothing'." (Bible Training School, May, 1907).
10. Wht kind of work wi1I be done by this angel? How
will he unite with the third angel's messng~?
-27-
ANSWER: "The angel who unites in the proclamation
of the third angel's message is to lighten the whole earth
witt, his glory. A work of world-wide extent and un-
wonted power is here foretolc1. The Advent Movement of
1840-44 was a glorious manifestation of the power of God;
the first angel's message was carried to every missionary
station in the world, and in some countries there was the
greatest religious interest which has been witnessed in anv
bnd since the Reformation of the sixteenth century; bti't
these are to be exceeded by the mighty movement under the
last warning of the third angel." (G.C. 611:1).
II. What does the Spirit of Prophecy say about this mes~
sage and the way the Lord proceeds?
ANSWER: "When light goes forth to lighten the
.earth, instead of coming up to the help of the Lord, they
will want to bind about His work to meet their narrow
ideas. Let me tell you that the Lord will work, in this
last work in a manner very much out of the common order
-of things, and in a way that will be' contrary to 'any human
planning." (T.M. 299 :2).
I2. Who will direct the work of God when the light is to
go to the ends of the earth'?
ANSWER: "There will be these among us who will
always want to control the work of God, to dictate even
wbat movements shall be made when the work goes for-
ward under the direction of the angel who joins the third
.angel in the message to be given to the, world. God will
use ways and means by which it will be seen that He is
taking the ,reins in his own hands. The workers will be
surprised at the simple means that He will use to bring
about and perfect His work of righteousness." (T.M.
299:2) .
.I3. Who is calle.d to receive the message first? How many
apostasies does this angel denounce?-TWO-. The
apostacy of the Adventist Church- and the aposta.cy of
the Protestant Church.
ANS'iVER: "Unless the church, which is now being
leavened with her own backsliding, shall repent and be
converted, she will eat of the fruit of her own doing, until
she shall abhor herself." (8 T. 250:3).
"Pride, covetousness, and love of the world have lived
in the heart without fear of, banishment or condemnation.
Grievous and presumptuous sins have dwelt among us. And
yet the general opinion is that the church is flourishing,
-28-
and that peace and spiritual prosperity are in all her bor-
ders" . . . "The church has turned back from following
Christ, her Leader, and is steadily retreating toward Egypt.
Yet few are alarmed or astonished at their '1vant of spiritual
power. Doubt and even disbelief of the testimonies of thE"
Spirit of God, is leavening our churches everywhere. Satan
would have it thus." (5 T. 217:1, 2).
I4. What accusation does this angel bring? To whom
does the warning first apply? Rev. I8 :2, 4.
ANS,VER: "The worlc1 must not be introduced into
the church, and married ·to the church, forming a bond of
unity. Through this means, the church will become indeed
corrupt, and as stated in Revelation, 'a cage of every un-
clean·and hateful birel'." (T.M. 265:1).
IS. Where should the reformation begin? How many
churches had need of a Reformation in I896?
ANSWER: "'When ministers realize the necessity of
thorough reformation in themselves, when they feel that
they must reach a higber standard, tbeir influence upon
the churches will be uplifting and refining." (T.M. 144 :2).
"We need a thorough reformation in all our churches.
'l'he converting power of God must come into the church.
Seek the Lord most earnestly, put away 3'our sins, and
tarry in Jerusalem till ye be endowed with power from on
high." (T.lli. 443 :2).
NOTE: Each year up to 1914 there had been a call to
a reform, but tbe reform was' rejected and tbe church
amalgamated with the worlc1.
Lesson NO.9-27th November, I948.
THE GENERAL CONFERENCE AT MINNEAPOLIS
IN 1888 AND TO-DAY
Memory Verse: "But they rebelled, and vexed his holy
Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and be
fought against them." lsa. 63 :IO.
I Who were called to give the message, 'Righteousness-
by faith" in I888?
ANSWER: "The Lord in His great mercy sent a most
precious message to His people through Elders Waggener
and Jones. This message was to bring more prominently
-29-
before the whole world. It presented justification through
faith in the surety; it inyited the people to receive the
righteousness of Christ which is made manifest in obedi-
ence to all the commandments of God. Many had lost
sight of Jesus. They neecled to have their eyes directed to
His divine person, His merits; and His changeless love for
tllt' human family." (T.M. 91 :2).
2. In what condition was the church then? What are
we told was cut?
ANSvVER: "The facts concerning the real condition of
the professed people of God, speak more loudly than their
profession, and make it evident that some power has cut
the cab!e that anchored them to the Eternal Rock, and that
they are drifting away to sea, without chart or compass."
"Review & Herald, July 24th, 1888." (C.O.R. 50:3).
3. What position did the General Conference take?
ANS'IVIDR: "The message was not received alike thy all
who attended the Conference; in fact, there was serious
difference of opinion concerning it among the leaders."
(C.O.R.56:2).
"But there are those who see no necessity for a special
work at this time. 'While GOd is working to arouse the
veople, they seek to turn aside the message of warning, re-
proof, and entreaty. 'l'heir influence tends to quiet the fears
of the people, and to prevent them from awakening to the
so!emnity of this time. Those who are doing this, are giv-
ing the trumpet an uncertain sounel. They ought to b.e
awake to the situation, but they have become ensnared
by the enemy." "Review & HeraW, August 13th, 1889."
(C.O.R. 63:3).
4. What was told them in 1890? To whom did the young-
people look? How did the leaders declare th'e mes=
sage th'en? How do they declare it now?
ANSWER: "If our brethren were all labourers to-
gether with God, they would not doubt that the message
He has sent us during these last two yeaJ:s is from heaven.
Our young men look to our older brethren, and as they see·
that they do not accept the message, but treat it as though
it wete of no consequence, it influences those who are·
ignorant of the Scriptures to reject the light. These men
who refuse to receive, interpose themselves between the'
people and the light. But there is no excuse for anyone's
refusing the light, for it has been plainly revealed. There
is no need of anyone's being in ignorance . . . . Some
-30-
nave turned from the message ot the righteousness of
.christ to criticize the men . . . . The third angel's mes-
sage will not be comprehended, the light which will lighten
the earth with its glory will be called a false light. by
those .who refuse to walk in its advancing glory. The
work that might have been done will be left undone by
the rejectors of truth, because of their unbelief. We en-
treat you who oppose the light ot truth, to stand out of
the way of God's people. Let heaven-sent light shine
forth upon them in clear and steady rays." "Review and
.Herald, March 18th, 1890, and May 27th, 1890." (C.O.R.
.()7 :1, 3).
5. What decided message was given to them at that time?
ANSWER: "There is sadness in heaven over the
spiritual ,blindness of many of our brethren. The Lord has
Taised up messengers and endued them with His Spirit, and
has said, 'Gry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a
trumpet, and show my people their transgression, and the
house of Jacob their sins.' Let no one run the risk of in-
terposing himself between the people and the message of
Heaven. The message of God will come to the people; and
if there were no voice among men to give it, the very
stones would cry out." (C.O.R. 68 :1).
6. When was God ready to finish His work? What kind
of message began and was rejected?
ANSWIDR: "Careful study of the instruction given by
the spirit of prophecy leads to the deep conviction that the
-coming of the message of Righteousness by Faith at the
1\!J.inneapolis Conference, was a signal providence of God-
a providence designed to initiate the 'beginning of a new
era in the finishing of Hi!" work. The following statement,
written just four years after the Minneapolis Conference
in 1888, affords basis tor this conclusion: 'The time of test
1s just upon us, for the loud cry of the third angel has al-
ready begun in the revelation of the righteousness of Christ,
the sin-pardoning Redeemer. This is the beginning of th€'
"light of the angel whose glo'!'y shall fill the Whole earth."
"Review and Herald, Nov. 22nd, 1892." (C.O.R. 72 :1).
NOTID : The message was rejected by the leaders of the
-General Conference. They claimed it was too early. To-
day they say it is too late and cast scorn on those 'l-vho
proclaim the message saying they are dangerous.
7. Why do the leaders to=day rise against the message?
ANS'W'ER: "Now, as in former Ilges, the presentation
-31-
of a truth that reproves the sins and errors of the times,.
will excite opposition. 'Everyone that doeth evil, hateth
the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should'
be reproved.' As men see that they cannot maintain their"
position by the Scriptures, many determine to maintain it
at all hazards, and with a malicious spirit, they assail the·
character and motives of those who stand in defense of·
unpopular truth. It is the same policy which has been
pursued in all ages. Elijah was declared to be a troubleI'·
in Israel, Jeremiah a traitor, Paul a polluter of the temple..
From that day to this, those who would be loyal to truth
have been denounced as seditious, heretical, or schismatic."·
(G.C. 458 :2). .
8. In which way do they oppose the work?
The following is quoted from the "Record" from the'
A. U. Conference of Seventh-day Adventists:-
(a) "T,he· point we desire to make is that the last message'
was given as from 1844. This is the hall=mark of its
genuineness, and any supposed last message coming·
later is spurious. It is too late. Be not deceived.'''
(Vol. 44, April 1st, 1940, page 2).
ANSWER: "The Spirit of Prophecy after the yeal'
1888 declared:-
"Revelation 18 points to the time when, as the result
of rejecting the three-fold warning of Rev. 14 :6-12, the'
church will have fully reached the condition foretold by
the second angel, and the people of God still in Babylon
will be called upon to separate from her communion. ThiS'
message is the last that will ever be given to the world and
it will accomplish its work. When those that 'believe not
tIll' truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness' shall be left
to receive strong delusion and to believe a lie, then the light
of trutb will shine upon all whose hearts are open to re-
ceive it, and all the children of the Lord that remain in
Babylon will heed the call, 'Come out of her, My people,.'r
(G.C.300:2).
The S.D.A. "Record" continues as follows:-
(b) "Thus, in the sequence of events clearly outlined in
the prophecy, there is no place for another message 01'·
movement." (Vol. 44, April 1St, 1940, page I).
NO'l'!D: The sinccn soul must awake, as by this state-
ment the leaders have closed the door to the light of the'
HEgel in Rey. 18:1 whose work is a work of Reformation:
-32-
in the church, thus showing that separation is a necessity.
"This scripture points forward to a time when the an-
nouncement of the fall of Babylon, as made by the second
angel of Revelation 14, is to be repeated, with the additional
mention of the corruptions which have been entering the
various organizations that constitute Babylon, since that
message was first given, in the summer of 1844." (G.O.
-603:2).
"Hence the movement symbolized by the angel com-
ing down from heaven, lightening the earth with his glory,
and crying mightily with a strong voice, announcing the
:sins of Babylon. In connection with his message the call
i;; heard, 'Oome out of her, My people.' These announce-
ments, uniting with the third angel's message, constitute the
final warning to be given to the inhabitants of the earth."
(G.O.604:1).
Again quoting from the S.D.A. "Record," the leaders
:ask the Pharisaical question:-
(c) "Is there to be another movement which some term
'the fourth angel's message?''' "There is no question
but that we are in the shaking time. God's dear child=
ren must know where they stand, 01' th'ey will be de=
ceived and shaken out." (Vol. 44, April 1st, 1940,
page I).
ANSvVER: 'l'he writer states that the people are in the
.shaking time but does not state the cause of the shaking.
'l'bey give the impression that those who separate from the
.apostatized church for the truth's sake are shaken out. The
'sieve is not the church, ,but the truth, in the hand of God,
:and all who choose the friendship of the world and refuse
-the message of Laodicea are shaken out, be he a man or a
,church.
The following statement from the "Spirit of Prophecy"
proves this:-
"He comes, as it were, nearer to the earth, with a mes-
:sage more pointed and direct, and he has 'great power,'
and the earth is 'lighted with his glory.' No such descrip-
tion of a message from heaven to man is elsewhere to be
found in all the Bible. This is the last; and' as is meet, it
-comes with surpassing glory and unwonted power." (D.
.& R. 672:1).
"I asked the meaning of the shaking I had seen, and
was shown that it would be caused by the straight testi-
mony called forth by the counsel of the True Witness to
-33-
the Laodiceans. This will have its effect upon the heart of the
receiver, and will lead him to exalt the standard and pour
forth the straight truth. Some will not bear this straight
testimony. They will rise up against it, and this is what
will cause a shaking among God's people." (E.W. 270 :2).
9. W,hat warning is given for our day?
ANSvVER: "Brethren, if you continue to be as idle, as
worldly, as selfish as you have been, God will surely pass
you by, and take those who are less self-caring, less am-
bitious for worldly honour, and who will not hesitate to go,
as did their Master, without the camp, bearing the reproach.
~'he work will be given: to those who will take it, those who
prize it, who weave its principles into their every-day ex-
perience. God will choose humble men, who are seeking to
glorify his name and advance his cause rather than to
honour and advance themselves. He will raise up men who
have not so much worldly wisdom, but who are connected
with him, and who will seek strength and counsel from
a-bove." (5 '1'. 461:1, 2).
Lesson No. 10.-4th December, 1948.
THE LOUD CRY
Memory Verse: "Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and
perish; for I work a work in your days, a work which ye
shall in no wise believe, though a:man declare it unto you."
Acts 13:41.
J. Wh'at voice will be heard before the plagues start?
What solemn call will be given as a last warning?
Rev. 18:4.
2. When was this solemn voice heard before? Matt.
3 :16=17, 17:5.
NOTE: This voice is heard in connection with the
latter rain. The Lord will recognize his people and bless
them.
3. Whalt must be done before the latter rain can be re=
ceived? Acts 3: 19=21.
NOTE: These people have passed through the inves-
tigative judgment, and their sins are forgiven. They are
justified through Jesus Christ.
4. Who are called out in the midnigh.t cry? What souls
are called in the lou~ cry?
-34-
NOTE: We see here two separations; one at the be-
ginning of the message (Rev. 18 :1), and one at the end
(the voice of God).
ANSWER: "The light that was shed upon the wait-
h~g ones penetrated everywhere, and those in the churches
who had any light, who had not heard and rejected the
three messages, obeyed the call, and left the fallen
churches . . . . Mighty miracles were wrought, the sick
were healed, and signs and wonders followed the believers.
God was in the work, and every saint, fearless of conse-
quences, followed the convictions of his own conscience,
and united with those who were keeping all the command-
ments of God; and with power they sounded abroad the
third message. I saw that this message "\vill close with
power and strength far exceeding the midnight cry."
(E.W. 278 :1).
"Very many raised their voices to cry, 'Behold, the
Bridegroom cometh!' and left their brethren who did not
love the appearing of Jesus, and who would not suffer
them to dwell upon His second coming. I saw Jesus turn
His face from those who rejected and despised His coming,
and then He bade angels lead His people out from among
the unclean, lest they should be defiled. Those who were
obedient to the message stood out free and united." (E.W.
249 :2).
"Then I heard a voice saying to those who had been
pushed and derided, ' Come out from among them, and
touch not the ·unclean.' In obedience to this voice, a large
number broke the cords which bound them, and leaving
the companies that were in darkness, joined those who had
previously gained their freedom, and joyfully united their
voices with them." (E.W. 242 :2).
5. With what is the loud cry compared?
ANSWER: "There was a coming out, a decided sepa-
ration from the wicked, an escape for life. So it was in the
days of Noah; so with Lot; so with the disciples prior to
the destruction of Jerusalem; and so it will be in the last
days. Again the voice of God is heard in a mes~age of
warning, bidding His people separate themselves from the
prevailing iniquity." (P.P. 166:4).
6. To whom does the parable 'of the ten virgins refer to~
day? What have they heard? Matt. 25 :5, 7.
ANSWER: "In the parable,' all' the ten virgins went
out to meet the Bridegroom. All had lamps and ,es£els for
-35-
oil. For a time there were seen no difference between
them." (C.O.L. 408:2).
7. What class waits for the Lord? Have they all the
same name and same kind of lamp? What takes
place?
ANSWER: "The ten virgins are watching in the even-
ing of this earth's history. All claim to be Christians. All
have a call, a name, a lamp, and all profess to be doing
God's service. All apparently wait for Christ's appearing.
But five are unready. Five will be found surprised, dis-
mayed, outside the banquet hall." (C.O.L. 412 :2).
8. Whom do the ten virgins represent?
ANSWER: "The two classes of watchers represent the
-two classes who profess to be waiting for their Lord. They
.are called virgins because they profess a pure faith."
(C.O.L. 406:3).
NOTE: There are two kinds of believers to-day.
9. When did we see the first part of this parable ful~
filled in the Advent people?
ANS'WER: "Here is brought to view the church living
ln the last days, the same that is pointed ·out in the close
·o:C Chapter 24. In this parable their experience is illus-
trated by the incidents of an Eastern marriage." (G.C.
393:2).
"Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty
in the war." (Isa. 3.25) .
.IO. When came the separation? Matt. 25 :8=IO.
I I. What kind of apostasy is cond.emned in the Advent
Church by this message?
ANSWER: "God cannot glorify His name through His
people while they are leaning upon man, and making flesh
their arm." (5 T. 729:1).
('No superiority of rank, dignity, or worldly wisdom,
no position in sacred office, will preserve men from sacri-
fieing principle, when left to their own deceitful hearts.
'Those who have been regarded as worthy and righteous,
prove to be ringleaders in apostasy, and examples in in-
difference and in the abuse of God's mercies. Their wicked
.course he will tolerate no longer, and in his wrath he deals
with them without mercy." (5 T. 212:1).
-36-
12 What is told regarding 'th'e 'leaders in the last work?
R.ev. I8:2.
"The days are fast approaching when there will be
great perplexity and confusion. Satan clothed in angel
robes, will deceive, if possible, the very elect. There will
be gods many and lords many. Every wind of doctrine will
'be blowing. Those who have rendered supreme homage to
'science falsely so-called' will not be the leaders then.
':I.'hose who have trusted to intellect, genius, or talent, will
not then stand at the head of rank and file. They did not
keep "pace with the light. Those who have proved them-
selves unfaithful will not then be entrusted with the flock.
In the last solemn work few great men will be engaged.
They are self-sufficient, independent of God, and He cannot
use them. The Lord has faithful servants, who in the
shaking, testing time will be disclosed to view." (5 T.
80 :1).
I3. How is the work of the loud cry described?
ANSWER: "The angel who unites in the proclamation
of the third angel's message, is to lighten the whole earth
with his glory. A work of world-wide extent and unwonted
power is here foretold." (G.O.611:2).
I4. How will the message be proclaimed? What will be
seen at this time?
ANSWER: "Servants of God, with their faces lighted
up and shining with holy consecration. will hasten from
place to place to proclaim the message from heaven. By
thousands of voices all over the earth, the warning will be
given. Miracles will be wrought, the sick will be healed,
and signs and wonders will follow the believers." (G.O.
612:1).
LesSon No. II-IIth December, I948.
THE LAST PHASE OF THE APOSTASY IN THE
PROTESTANT CHURCH AND THE REPETITION
OF THE SECOND ANGEL'S MESSAGE
Memory Verse: "And deceiveth them that dwell on the
earth by the means of those miracles which he had power
to do in the sight of tbe beast; saying to them that dwell
on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast,
which had the wound by a sword, and did live.'" (R.ev.
I3:I4).
-37-
I What power accompanies the Fourth Angel's Message?
ANS'WER: "The angel who unites in the proclamation
of the third angel's message, is to lighten the Whole earth
with his glory. A work of world-wide extent and un-
wonted power is foretold." (G.C.611:1).
2. Who must receive the message of Rev. I8? Isa:. 58:I.
ANSW"ER: "Again, the command is given, 'Cry aloud,.
spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show My
peo11le their transgression, and the house of Jacob their
sins.' It is not the wicked world, but those whom the Lord
designates as 'MY people,' that are to be reproved for their
transgressions. He declares further, 'Yet they seek Me'
daily, and delight to know My ways, as a nation that did
righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God.'
Here is brought to view a class who think themselves
righteous, and appeal' to manifest great interest in the ser-
vice of God; but the stern and solemn rebuke of the-
Searcher of hearts proyes them to be trampling upon the
divine precepts." (G.C. 452 :3L
3. According to the message of Rev. I8, where are many
of the children of God to=da;y? What are they called
to do? Rev. I8:4.
ANSWER: "Notwithstanding the spiritual darknesg
and alienation from God that exists in the churches which
constitute Babylon, the great body of Christ's truE' followers'
are still to be found in their communion. There are many
of those who have never seen the special truths for thig
time." (G.C. 390 :1).
4. To whom must the message afterwards be given?
What will be the result?
ANSWER: "Revelation 18 points to the time when, as
the result of rejecting the three-fold warning of Rev. 14 :6-
12, the church will have fully reached the condition fore-
told by the seoond angel, and the people of God still in
Babylon will be called upon to separate from her com-
munion. This message is the last that will ever be given
to the world, and all the children of the Lord that remain
in Babylon w,ill heed the call, 'Come out of her, My
people'." (G.C. 390 :2).
5. To which class of people was the message proclaimed
in I844? Did the message have a complete fulfilment
in those times?
ANSWER: "The second angel's message of Revelation,
-38-
14 was first preached in the summer of 1844, and it then
ltad a more direct application to the churches of the United
States, where the warning ·of the judgment had been most
widely proclaimed and most generally rejected, and where
-the declension in the churches had been most rapid. But
the message of the second angel did not reach its complete
fulfilment in 1844." (G.C. 398 :2).
6. When will the message be repeated to the Protestant
churches? What is the visible mark of apostasy?
ANSWER: "Not yet, however, can it be said that
"Babylon is fallen . . . because she made all nations
·drink of the wine of the wrath of her for·nication.' She
has not yet made all nations do this. The spirit of world-
·conforming and indifference to the testing truths for our time
·exists and has been gaining ground in churches of the
Protestant faith in all the countries of Christendom; and
those churches are included in the solemn and terrible de-
'nunciation of the second angel. But the work of apostasy
has not yet reached its culmination." (G.C. 389 :2).
7. What .circumstances will th'e people of God meet?
ANSWER: "The Bible declares that before the coming
-of the Lord, Satan will work 'with all power and signs and
lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteous-
ness;' and they that 'receive not the love of the truth, that
they might be saved,' will be left to receive 'strong de-
lusion, that they should ,believe a lie'." (G.C. 389:3).
8. When will the fulfilment of Revelation I4:8 be com~
plete?
A1~SWIDR: "Not until this condition shall be reached,
and the union of the churCh with the world shall be fully
aecomplished throughout Christendom, will the fall of
Babylon be complete. The change is a progressive one,
.and the perfect fulfilment of Rev. 14:8 is yet future."
(G.C. 389:3).
NOTE: The Protestant chUl'ch has not brought all the
~1ations in unity under her rule. The unity with the Catho-
'lic church and paganism is in the near futUl'e.
9. When will the fulfilment of this prophecy be revealed?
Who will provoke the churches to .unite?
ANSvVER: "Thus the message of the third angel will
be proclaimed. As the time comes for it to be given with
,greatest power, the Lord will work through humble instru-
-39-
ments, leading the minds of those who consecrate them-
selves to His service. The labourers will be qualified rather
by the unction of His Spirit thmr by the training of literary
institutions. Men of faith and prayer wi1l be constrained
to go forth with holy zeal, declaring the words whiCh God
gives them. The sins Of Babylon will be laid open. The
fearful results of enforcing the observances of the church
by civil authority, the inroads of Spiritualism, the stealthy
but rapid progress of the papal power,-all will be un-
masked." (G.C. 606 :2).
"The power attending the message will only madden
those who oppose it. The clergy will put forth almost
super-human efforts to shut away the light, lest it should
shine upon their flocks. By every means at their command
they will' endeavour to suppress the discussion of these vital
questions. The church appeals to the strong arm of civil
power, and in this w'ork, papists and Protestants unite."
(G.C. 607:1).
10. In what way wj11 the Protestant churches reach their
final apostasy? When will they openly reject the
third angel's message to fulfil the accusation of the
second angel's message?
ANSWER: "When Protestantism shall stretch her
hand across the gulf to grasp' the hand of the Roman power,
when she shall reach over the 8Jbyss to clasp hands with
Spiritualism, when, under the influence of this threefold
union, our country shall repudiate every principle of its
constitution as a Protestant and Republican Government, and
shall make provision for the propagation of papal false-
hoods and delusion, then we may know that the time has
come for the marvellous working of Satan, and that the
end is near." (5 T. 451:1).
II If the Advent people reject the message to Laodicea
and that of Rev. 18:1 to=day; when will be the time
for th'em to accept? Must they wait in opposition till
all is fulfilled?
ANSWER: "As the approach of the Roman armies
was a sign to the disciples of the impending destruction of
Jerusalem, so may this apostasy be a sign to us that the
limit of God's forbearance is reached, that the measure of
our nation's iniquity is full, and that the angel of mercy
is about to take her flight, never to return. The people of
God will then be plunged into these scenes of affliction and
distress which prophets have described as the time of
Jacob's trOUble." (5 T. 451:2).
IZ. What kind of work is developed to=day? Against
-40-
whom does the devil especially direct his attacks?
ANSWER: "The great apostasy will develop into dark-
ness deep as midnight, impenetrable as sackcloth of hair,
To God's people it will be a night of trial, a night of weep-
ing, a night of persecution for the truth's sake. But out of
that night of darkness God's light will shine." (C.O.L.
414:3).
13. Has th'e Seventh=Day Adventist Church escaped the
wiles of this spirit described in Rev. 16:14?
ANSWER: "It is apostasy that led the early church to
seek the aid of the civil government, and this prepared the
way for the development of the papacy,-the beast. Said
Paul, 'There' shall 'come a falling away . . . . and that
man of sin be revealed.' So apostasy in the church will
prepare the way for the image to the beast."
Lesson No. 12-18th December, 1948.
THE CLOSE OF PROBATION
Memory Verse: "The harvest is past, the summer is
ended, and we are not saved." Jer. 8:20.
1. To which' invitation must we take heed? What must
we do? Isa. 55:6.
2 What are we called upon to forsake? Isa. 55 :7.
3. What solemn gathering is to be proclaimed? Joel,
1 :13=15.
4. Where must the Reform begin? What is the duty of
the Pastors and the flock? Joel 2:12=17.
5. What did th-e Lord ask the Jewish people? Does God
ask His people the same question to=day? Jer. 3 :12=14.
6. In which way must the apostasy be confessed? What
effort will'be in vain? Jer. 2:22=26. Hosea 14:1, 2.
ANS",VER: "I recognise, on the other hand, the danger
of yielding to the temptation to conceal sin or to comprom-
ise with it, and thus act the hypocrite. Be sure that the
confession fully covers the influence of the wrong com-
mitted, that no duty to God, to your neighbour, or to the
church is left undone, and then you may lay hold upon
Christ with confidence, expecting His blessing. But the
question of how and to whom sins should be confessed, is
- 41-
one that demands careful, prayerful study. We must con-
sider it from all points, weighing it before God, and seek-
ing divine illumination. vVe should inquire whether to con-
fess publicly the sins of which we have been guilty will
do good or harm. Will it show forth the praises of Him
who has called us out of darkness into his marvellous light?
·Will it help to purify the minds of the people, or will the
open relation of the deceptions practiced in denying the
truth, have an after-influence to contaminate other minds,
and destroy confidence in us?" (ST. 646:3).
7. What will be the result of confession and repentance?
Hosea 6:1=3.
ANS'i\TER: "I was shown that if God's people make no
('fforts on their part, but wait for the refreshing to come
llpon them and remove their wrongs and correct their errors;
if they depend upon that to cleanse them from filthiness of
tile flesh and spirit, and fit them to engage in the loud cry
oJ' the third angel, they will be found wanting. The re-
freshing or power of God comes only on those who have
pre11ared themselves for it by doing the work which Go~l
bids them, namely, cleansing themselves from all filthiness
of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of
God." (1 T. 619:1).
