MODERN REVIVALS
Memory Verse: "Some fell upon stony places, where
they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up,
because th'ey had no deepness of earth: And when the sun
was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root,
they withered away." Matt. I3 :5=6.
. I. Who was the ,herald of t.he great reformation?
ANSWER: "Foremost among those who were called to
lpfld the church from the darlmess of popery j uto the light
oj' a purer faith, stood Martin Luther. Zealous, arc1ent, find
devoted, knowing no fear but the feflr of Go(l mlll ack-
nowledging no foundation for religious faith but the Holy
Scriptures, Luther was the man for his time; through him,
God accomplished a great work for the reformation of the
church and the enlightment of the world." (G.C. 120 :1):
2. Did the Reformation end with Luther? Did he h'ave
all the light? What must we not forget?
-5-
NOTE: '1'he work of Reformation is continual and will
be developed until the end of time.
ANSWER: "The Re:l'ormation did not, as many sup-
pose, end with Luther. It is to be continued to the close
of this world's history. Luther had a great work to do in
reflecting to others the light which God had permitted to
shine upon him; yet he did not receive all the light which
was to be given to the world. From that time to this, new
light has been continually shining upon the Scriptures, and
new truths have been constantly unfolding." (G.O. 148 :4).
3. How did Satan oppose the advance of this work? What
do we see to=day?
ANSWIDR: "The prince of evil contests every inch of
ground' over which God's people advance in their journey
toward the heavenly city. In all the history of the church,
no reformation has been carried forward without encoun-
tering serious obstacles. Thus it was in Paul's day."
(G.O. 396 :1).
NOTE: In these days, so to-day, Satan has great power
over the minds of men, causing them to resist and fight
against reformation.
4. When the scriptures are sealrohed diligently and
preached in sincerity, what will be the rei'>u1t? II Tim.,
4:I=3.
ANSWIDR: "Wherever the word of God has been faith-
fully preached, results have followed that attested its
divine origin. The Spirit 0:1' God accompanied the message
of His servants, and the word was with power. Sinners
felt their consciences quickened." (G.O. 46,1 :1).
5. Which power converts the sinner? What are the
fruits of true repentance?
ANSWER: "This is the result of the work of the Spirit
of God. There is no evidence of genuine repentance unless
it works reformation. If he restores the pledge, given
again that he had robbed, confess his sins, and love God
and his fellow-men, the sinner may be sure that he has
found peace witU God. Such were the effects that in former
years 1'ollowed seasons of religious awakening. Judged by
their fruits, they were known to be blessed of God in the
salvation of men and the uplifting of humanity." (G.O.
462:3).
6. How are many popular modern. revivals conducted?
What is the effect of such a work on its converts?
-6-
ANS'W'ER: "Popular revivals are too often carried by
appeals to the imagination, by exciting the emotions, by
gratifying the love for what is new and stmtling. Con-
verts thus gained have little desire to listen to Bible truth,
little interest in the testimony of prophets and apostles-
Unless a religious service has something of a sensational
character, it has no attractions for them. A message which
appeals to unimpassioned reason awakens no response. The
plain warnings of God's word, relating directly to their
eternal interests, are unheeded.'" (G.C. 463 :2).
7. What will be the first interest of a truly .converted
Sloul?
ANSWER: "With every truly converted soul the rela-
tion to God and to eternal things will be the great topic of
life. But where, in the popular churches ot to-day, is the
spirit of consecration to God? 'l'he converts do not re-
nounce their pride and love of the world. They are no
more willing to deny self, to take up the cross, and follow
the meek and lowly Jesus, than before their conversion. Re-
ligion has become the sport of infidels and sceptic.s be-
cause so many who bear its name are ignorant of its prin-
ciples, The power of godliness has well-nigh departed from
many of the churches. Picnics, church theatricals, church
fnirs, fine houses, personal display, have banished thoughts
of God. Lands and goods and worldly occupations engross
the mind, and things of eternal interest receive hardly a
passing notice." (G.C.463:3).
8. What kind of revivals do we witness in the Christian
world to=day? What will be the result?
ANSWER: "In many of the revivals which have oc-
curred during the last halt century, the same influences
have been at work, to a greater or less degree, that will be
manifest in the more extensiYe movements of the future,
There is an emotional excitement, a mingling of the true
with the false, that is well adapted to mislead." (G.C.
464:2).
9. To what duty is the Christian called? What response
is made? What is written on front of the churches?
ANSWER: "They are called to suffer with Christ, but
they shrink from even reproach . . . Apostasy, apostasy,
apostasy, is engraven on the very front of every church;
and did they know it, and did they feel it, there might be
hope; but, alas! they cry, 'We are rich, and increased in
goods, and stand in need of nothing'." (G.C. 388 :1).
-7-
IO In which way will the sincere believers be gathered
from th'ese Churches?
ANSWER: "Notwithstanding the wide-spread declen-
sion of faith and piety, there are true followers of Christ
in these churches. Before the final visitation of God's
judgments upon the earth, there will be, among the people
of the Lord, such a revival of primitive godliness as has
not been witnessed since apostolic times. The Spirit and
power of God will be poured out upon His children. At
that time many will separate themselves from those
churches in which the love of this world has supplanted
love for God and His word. Many, both of ministers and
people, will gladly accept those great truths which God
bas caused to be proclaimed at this time, to prepare a
lleople for the Lord's second coming." (G.C. 464 :1).
7. What class waits for the Lord? Have they all the
same name and same kind of lamp? What takes
place?
ANSWER: "The ten virgins are watching in the even-
ing of this earth's history. All claim to be Christians. All
have a call, a name, a lamp, and all profess to be doing
God's service. All apparently wait for Christ's appearing.
But five are unready. Five will be found surprised, dis-
mayed, outside the banquet hall." (C.O.L. 412 :2).
8. Whom do the ten virgins represent?
ANSWER: "The two classes of watchers represent the
-two classes who profess to be waiting for their Lord. They
.are called virgins because they profess a pure faith."
(C.O.L. 406:3).
NOTE: There are two kinds of believers to-day.
9. When did we see the first part of this parable ful~
filled in the Advent people?
ANS'WER: "Here is brought to view the church living
ln the last days, the same that is pointed ·out in the close
·o:C Chapter 24. In this parable their experience is illus-
trated by the incidents of an Eastern marriage." (G.C.
393:2).
"Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty
in the war." (Isa. 3.25) .
.IO. When came the separation? Matt. 25 :8=IO.
I I. What kind of apostasy is cond.emned in the Advent
Church by this message?
ANSWER: "God cannot glorify His name through His
people while they are leaning upon man, and making flesh
their arm." (5 T. 729:1).
('No superiority of rank, dignity, or worldly wisdom,
no position in sacred office, will preserve men from sacri-
fieing principle, when left to their own deceitful hearts.
'Those who have been regarded as worthy and righteous,
prove to be ringleaders in apostasy, and examples in in-
difference and in the abuse of God's mercies. Their wicked
.course he will tolerate no longer, and in his wrath he deals
with them without mercy." (5 T. 212:1).

12 What is told regarding 'th'e 'leaders in the last work?
R.ev. I8:2.
"The days are fast approaching when there will be
great perplexity and confusion. Satan clothed in angel
robes, will deceive, if possible, the very elect. There will
be gods many and lords many. Every wind of doctrine will
'be blowing. Those who have rendered supreme homage to
'science falsely so-called' will not be the leaders then.
':I.'hose who have trusted to intellect, genius, or talent, will
not then stand at the head of rank and file. They did not
keep "pace with the light. Those who have proved them-
selves unfaithful will not then be entrusted with the flock.
In the last solemn work few great men will be engaged.
They are self-sufficient, independent of God, and He cannot
use them. The Lord has faithful servants, who in the
shaking, testing time will be disclosed to view." (5 T.
80 :1).
I3. How is the work of the loud cry described?
ANSWER: "The angel who unites in the proclamation
of the third angel's message, is to lighten the whole earth
with his glory. A work of world-wide extent and unwonted
power is here foretold." (G.O.611:2).
I4. How will the message be proclaimed? What will be
seen at this time?
ANSWER: "Servants of God, with their faces lighted
up and shining with holy consecration. will hasten from
place to place to proclaim the message from heaven. By
thousands of voices all over the earth, the warning will be
given. Miracles will be wrought, the sick will be healed,
and signs and wonders will follow the believers." (G.O.
612:1).
