Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will introduce the idea of non-living things and living things by showing them a graphic
organizer similar to the one they will be creating later in the lesson. The teacher will explain that the children
are to group living things together and non-living things together. After showing them the graphic organizer,
the teacher will ask what the living things have in common and what the non-living things have in common.
After they come up with a few ideas, the teacher will write them on a piece of chart paper and tell the
students to create a graphic organizer based on these attributes.

Students will follow the teacher’s instructions for the set up. They will create the main idea bubble
together as well the two subcategories of living and non-living. The children will come up with at least 3
examples of each and put them under the correct subcategories. Once they are finished, the teacher will have
them go around the room and say on example of either that they have come up with. This will give students
who don’t quite understand the concept a chance to hear different examples of each and be able to put some
of the attributes together.

Reflective Practice: To extend this lesson, I will take them outside to the playground and have them bring in
one living object such as a plant and then one non-living object in such as a rock. I will then have 2 boxes
labelled, Living and Non-living, and I would have the students put their objects in the correct boxes, then go
over it as a class.
