 Before We Look Forward,
We Should Always Look Back
Looking back on September 8th, it was my 4 year anniversary, and I vividly remember the day I
started, as we had a foot of snow in Calgary. Unfortunately, it was a sign of things to come, oil
crashed and many people employed in the sector were negatively impacted. For the next four
years, ESS North America had double digit declines in revenue and profit like most organizations
in the sector. However, our team was never defeated, never gave up, and trusted our vision of the
TNT / Home is Here Journey. The result was our product got better, more efficient and consistent,
and it resonated in the marketplace as our competitors did not adapt to what our clients wanted.
This led to a significant increase in new sales over the past three years where we have outsold
every sector in Compass Group Canada, and almost all of the Canadian sectors combined. Sounds
impressive, but in reality, had we not done this, we would not be in business anymore. That is a
scary thought. So thank you, for believing in our journey, for believing in each other, and for all of
your hard work and effort to make us the bESSt again!!!!

Now looking forward as we start our 2019 Fiscal year, we are planning to actually have positive
growth for the first time since the crash. The great thing is we are growing everywhere and
even new places such as St. Croix. However, growth isn’t easy, and it takes a lot of effort from
everyone. We need to constantly remind ourselves what got us here; TNT / Home is Here, driving
our focus on Health & Safety, Culinary Excellence, Great Guest experience and serving our clients.
It also is supporting each other, to make sure we hold each other accountable and mentor and
coach each other to be the best that we can be. As we grow, we are going to be adding more new
people to the team at every level, which means we need to ensure we are developing people to
be ready for their next success. I anticipate F2019 will have the regular challenges that come with
expansive growth and it’s critical we focus on our people at every level to ensure we all move
forward together. So let me share some thoughts from a great speaker in Peter Legge:

1. A group of people will be a part of your team. SERVE THEM.

2. Some will feel overwhelmed. ENCOURAGE THEM.

3. You will have new associates on your team. AFFIRM THEM.

4. People will hurt. LISTEN TO THEM/COMFORT THEM.

Thank you for allowing me to serve you for these past 4 years, it’s been an honour. Now it’s time
to look forward to a year of massive growth and an amazing year in Fiscal 2019. I look forward to
serving even more of you as we continue to grow together!
