Genre Action role-playing

As in the previous .hack games, .hack//G.U. simulates

a massively multiplayer online role-playing game as

The story focuses on a player named Haseo who hunts
a player nicknamed Tri-Edge who defeated his friend

Developer Bandai
Publisher Bandai

Genre Action role-playing

In terms of gameplay, .hack//G.U. was made more

action-oriented than the first .hack games with Haseo
being able to connect combos with other characters
from the party. The interactions between the charac-
ters outside The World was expanded to further simu-
late the idea the player is going through a MMO. This
was based on the last game .hack and the .hack//SIGN
anime in which the characters’ had to leave The World
in order to take care of “real life events.”

Director Hiroshi Matsuyama claimed that Rebirth was

longer than the four games of the first series combined
and that the three .hack//G.U. games would not be
“three parts to the same game”. Unlike the previous
series where the animated tie-in .hack//Liminality was
included as a bonus DVD, the development team opted
to integrate the animated story into webisodes avail-
able in-game. Bandai also released a “Terminal Disc”
with the special edition of Rebirth.

Developer CyberConnect2

Release date (jp) September 19, 2002
Genre Action role-playing

Development for .hack began in early 2000 with the

aim of shocking and surprising the player and creating
a distinctive product. CyberConnect2’s president Hi-
roshi Matsuyama played a key role in developing the
concept for the series. Matsuyama said that this would
give young gamers an opportunity to experience on-
line play without paying monthly fees or needing pow-
erful Internet connections. From the start of its devel-
opment, .hack was envisioned as a four-part series.

The developers looked at a number of MMORPGs

such as Phantasy Star Online, Ultima Online, and Fi-
nal Fantasy XI for inspiration, and drew influences
from the prior works of character designer Yoshiyuki
Sadamoto (Neon Genesis Evangelion) and scenario
writer Kazunori Itō (Ghost in the Shell). Itō noted that
casting the player into the role of a subscriber of The
World creates a unique story-telling situation which
draws the player deeper into the plot.
