From the editors

What we have behind us a summer! Vogelwijk cellars since 1976 had not been as dry as

in the months of June, July and August this year. Many gardens have a long time no

longer looked so tired in yellow and hay-like grass seemed to have become a new trend.

Fortunately fell during August, a few servings refreshing rain that nature gave new

energy. Meanwhile, we hope that this month we experience an Indian summer, because it

 When the district was created, Ms.

Many Vogel Local residents are old, especially women. In
2010, died at the Kramsvogellaan Ms. Menke-Kolstee, who
was 104 years and had told half a year before her life story in
this magazine. Also, we have had the past few years two
times a hundred years in our midst: the ladies Loonstra
(Hawk Avenue) and Wernink (Roodborstlaan). On 28 June,
was again celebrated a centenary of the Sportlaan the height
of the Wielewaalplein. That was Ms. C. Burgy van der Kolk
hundred years. A remarkable fact, because that's the year as
old as the neighborhood where

she lived for many decades. When the first stone was laid on
the Houtrust Avenue on August 21, 1918 for what was then
the 'Garden City district Houtrust' was called, was Ms. Burgy
for seven weeks in the cradle in her hometown Wierden at
Almelo in Overijssel.

The centennial is the widow of the clergymen ds. KJH
Burgy who has long served two Hague churches. ,, since
1958, so for sixty years, I live here on the Sportlaan, "says
Ms. Burgy. ,, And I'm not going to have Treaties

sometimes thought, when I'm old, I'm in one of the
Sportlaan Flats living opposite, but that never happened. It
is certainly not a property. It used to be the church, which
led to a house. Now there is another owner who I hire.
,,When we got married during the war, we went to
Westmaas in Hoekse Waard, where my husband had his
first incumbency. We lived there in this beautiful parish,
"she says as she shows a picture of a beautiful villa with a
bridge over a stream to the house. ,, When my husband
after several years became pastor in The Hague, we
moved to the Van Weede van Dijk Veldstraat in the
Statenkwartier. His first church here Oranjekerk was
Goeverneurlaan, which was demolished in the nineties.
He was also a minister in the Juliana Church in Kemp
Street. That building is still there, but it is not a church
anymore. There is a community center in now. ''
,,Before, I always came in Paul's Church on the Siskins
Avenue, but which is already broken some fifteen years
ago. Then the Bergkerk the Daal and Bergselaan was the
closest Protestant church. Five women from the Bergkerk,
including myself, have a kind of coffee club. After church
we always drink coffee at one of us all together, so always

years ago. She had been a teacher, including in
Hellevoetsluis. There were at that time many Turkish
families live and Nelleke thus taught to children. They'd
talked about. Our son Bert also is dead. He got cancer last
year and it died last September. ''
,,Hundred years goes without saying '' says Ms. Burgy,
who has had years of painting as a hobby and has still
hung some of her work on the walls.
,,I'm glad I'm still so vital, even though I walk with a walker.
Two of your children survive is indeed very difficult, but I
rather try to think of happy memories. ''
One hundred roses
The day of her 100 th birthday will not easily forget Ms. Burgy.
,, Deputy Mayor Richard de Mos came along with his
secretary to visit. I received a letter from the king, and also
one of the king's commissioner and in the course of the day,
relatives and friends came to congratulate me. I also got a
hundred red roses from my ex-daughter. Of course my son
Kasper there with his family and there was even a cousin
from New Zealand. In short, it was a wonderful birthday. '
,,The only bad of aging is that everyone around you falls
away, but pathetic and alone I am absolutely not, 'she
concludes.
,,Apparently I have good genes. I come from a strong
race that had little scary diseases. ''
