YEAR 10 – GETTING

STARTED
AIMS
____________________________________________________________________________________________
You’re starting secondary course. Now it’s time for you to have more and more initiative and to
take control of what you need to do to improve your English skills! That’s the reason why you’ll
start with an overview of our Textbook and by practising your study skills.

YOUR TASKS – WORK IN PAIRS

DAY 1
Answer all the questions in your answer sheet
Keep one copy and hand in the other to the teacher at the end of the lesson.
DAY 2
Prepare a short presentation about the topic(s) in UNIT 1. (See instructions below)
Give your presentation and be ready to answer your colleagues’ questions.

A – LINKS – TEXTBOOK (TB) (ca 20 minutes)


1. Take a look at the TABLE of CONTENTS (=Map of the Book)
a. How is it organized?
b. What are the 4 topics we’ll be dealing with?
c. Which one seems more interesting to you? Explain briefly why.

2. Go through UNIT 1. Check the different texts, pictures, tasks.


a. Which text (sub-topic) seems more interesting to you? Explain briefly why.
b. You must be curious about this topic. What question(s) would you like to ask to find
out more about it?
c. What language points (vocabulary and grammar) are dealt with here in this unit?

3. In general, does the TB seem interesting to you? What attracts you, if anything?

B – LINKS – STUDY/REVISION GUIDE (WB) (ca 20 minutes)

1. Take a look at your WB – Table of Contents.


a. How is it organized?
b. What is the purpose of the WB?
c. Can you use the WB on your own, for self-study? Why/why not?

2. Go through UNIT 1.
a. What vocabulary topics are introduced / expanded here?
b. What language points (grammar) are dealt with?
c. Take a quick look at the Study Tips. What are they about? Do you find them useful?

3. In general, do you find the WB useful? Is it well organized?

C – GET STARTED (finish at home)

As you noticed there is an introductory unit both in your TB (pages 9-33) and WB (pages
4-11).
Do the exercises in sub-unit 0.3 (TB – pages 18-19).

YOUR PRESENTATION:
Present to the class the question(s) you asked in A-2 b. Bring a picture that illustrates
your question(s).
You have up to 2 minutes for your presentation + 1 minute for questions
