“Cup Pusher Instrument” Design Challenge

Background
There are 12 Hemispherical Cups made of Titanium. Each cup has an Inner Diameter (ID) surface, Outer
Diameter (OD) surface and a Rim Surface. All the cups have a constant thickness of 3 millimeter (See
Figure below). The ID of the cup is a highly polished (mirror finish) surface, while the OD is a as
machined surface. The accompanying table shows the ID values of all the cup sizes.

Problem Statement
Design an Instrument which can hold all the 12 sizes of the hemispherical cup rigidly (one at a time) and
can be used to lock with the cup, so that it can be taken from one place to another (without the cup
falling off). This instrument should also be able to push or pressurize the cup into a hemispherical cavity
by the user (must be capable of rigidly transferring the applied force). The OD of the cup will interface
with the hemispherical cavity where the cup will be pushed and fixed. Once the cup is fully
seated/pushed into the cavity, the instrument should get disassembled from the cup without changing
the orientation or location of the Cup.

Design Constraints
1. The solution must be one single Instrument that is compatible with all 12 cup sizes.
2. The Instrument must NOT use the OD or the Rim Surface of the cup to hold or pressurize it.
Must use only the ID surface.
3. Must NOT damage (dent, scratch) the ID of the cup.
4. Must allow visibility of the cup’s Rim Surface during transport and pressurization (if not
complete rim, then at least partial).
5. Must have an ergonomic handle to hold & pressurize the cup into the hemispherical cavity.
6. Should be easy to assemble and disassemble from the cup.

Expected Deliverables
The solution to the problem should contain the following:
1. Concept sketches or Engineering Drawing or CAD Models
2. Detail writeup explaining the working of the concept and how it will address each
requirement (Word document/presentation, etc.).
3. If there is any specific material that will be used in the instrument, then explain the
material property that will help achieve the desired result.
