HISTORY OF ADVERTISEMENT

PART - I
ADVERTISING
Advertising is a form of communication used to persuade an audience (viewers,
readers or listeners) to take some action with respect.

GLOBAL HISTORY OF ADVERTISEMENT

History of advertisement dates back to 2000 BC when the Egyptians invent outdoor
advertising carving public notices in steel. However, the first officially recorded
advertisement dates back to 1704.

In 1704 the first newspaper advertisement, an announcement seeking a buyer for an

Oyster Bay, Long Island, estate, is published in the Boston News-Letter.

The history of advertisement will be shown through a 60 second video giving and
bird’s-eye view of the evolution of the advertising industry, from ad agencies to brand-
building to soap operas.

HISTORY OF PAKISTANI ADVERTISING

In the era of 1947-1964, the advertising industries tries to create a level of awareness
in urban population tshrough print ads, the other medium which was used to influence
people was radio. The advertising agencies in Pakistan depicted patriotism in their ads
via characters and images to create an emotional impact on consumers through the
dressing of man, woman, child and public service messages. The earlier advertising
through radio was only mere announcements; that later evolved and included jingles,
musicals and poetry to increase the recall.

The trends in advertising were changed after the advent of TV, PTV and Radio Pakistan
used movie songs as the concept in the advertisements of famous brands. Celebrity
endorsements became the new source of communication for ads when the popular
actors and actresses became the brand symbol.

1
HISTORY OF ADVERTISEMENT

Few of the Pakistani ads will be demonstrated in the presentation.

Every industry has its stars, past and present, and advertising is certainly no exception.
In fact, the very nature of advertising, and the number of different industries it touches,

HISTORY OF ADVERTISEMENT

MOST SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING CAMPAIGINS OF ALL

TIME
Reebok
Comic falls are big crowd pleasers
whether they’re real or staged.
Reebok capitalized on that guarantee
with their award-winning 2003 ad
featuring a huge professional football
player whose sole purpose was to spot
distracted office workers and
physically tackle them to get them back on task. “Terrible” Terry Tate, Office
Linebacker, appeared in nine different Reebok ads between 2002 and 2004.

McDonalds
Just when people thought the Big Mac
couldn’t be marketed in any more ways,
McDonald’s made the double decker
burger the prize in a 1993 basketball
shoot-off between icons Larry
Bird and Michael Jordan. The
competition advances from simple court
shots to shooting from the tops of city
buildings. Bird and Jordan never miss a shot, accentuating the value each athlete put on
the fast food reward.

7
HISTORY OF ADVERTISEMENT

Coca-Cola

It seems global but the brand didn’t

achieve that stature without
constantly reinventing itself and
trying to one-up its competition.
One of Coke’s most successful
ads, which earned the coveted
1979 CLIO award for advertising.
Instead of pushing the image of world unity and peace through soft drink consumption
that the company was so famous for, this ad had only two characters, a young boy and
renowned NFL player “Mean” Joe Green. The kid timidly approaches an exhausted
Green in the stadium tunnel after a game loss and offers him his Coke. Green initially
rebuffs him but finally takes the Coke and chugs it. As the boy walks away, Green calls
out to him, smiles, and pitches him his jersey. The kid beams and Green smiles, proving
once again that the ads that tug at heart strings always succeed.

PAKISTAN’S SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISMENT CAMPAIGN

SHAN FOODS – KHUSHYAN CHAKH LO
This particular advert had most of the expats’
tear ducts flowing non-stop, yet on a lighter
side gave rise to many a memes on the internet
mainly because of the lead’s Shahrukh Khan-
esque hiccupy acting. It conveyed the peaked
emotions which were quite relatable. Well
done, the creative team at Ogilvy & Mather
Pakistan.

PHIR SE GAME UTHA DEN- COKE

TVC
This advert was quickly released to
jump on the cricket season bandwagon
and to cheer on the Pakistani team
featuring Javed Miandad reminiscing
the 1992 world cup. Soho Square and

world cup song for 2015.

LIGHTING UP LIVES TVC PEPSI

AUDIT BUREAU OF CIRCULATION (ABC)

The Audit Bureau of Circulations (UK) or ABC was founded on 14 October 1931 by
the ISBA (Society of British Advertisers) to provide an independent verification of
circulation/data figures to facilitate the buying and selling of advertising space within
UK national newspapers.

ABC inspires confidence in the ad trading industry by delivering a valued ‘stamp of

trust’. This underpins the way billions of pounds worth of advertising budgets are traded
across the converging media landscape in the UK and beyond. ABC has two distinct
roles:

1. To bring the industry together to agree standards that define media measurement
and determine best practice.
2. To offer independent audit and compliance services, delivering certification
which verifies that data and processes meet the industry-agreed Reporting
Standards.

INTRODUCTION OF AUDIT BUREAU OF CIRCULATION PAKISTAN.

Federal Minister for Information and Media Development Javed Jabbat said the
government had decided to autonomies the Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) so that
circulation audit and government advertisement could not be used to affect the freedom
of the press.

Addressing a seminar “The role of Mass Media in Pakistan”, organized by an NGO,

Omeed Development Organization at a local hotel Jabbar said talks were in progress
with the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) and a law would soon be framed to
accord autonomy to the ABC. “The second thing we have done for strengthening the
press freedom is the abolition of newsprint quota system. Duty on the newsprint has
also been reduced to make the access of all newspapers – big and small – equal,
equitable and non-discrimination.

13
HISTORY OF ADVERTISEMENT

BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF ALL PAKISTAN NEWSPAPERS SOCIETY

The Pakistan Newspapers Society, a precursor to the APNS, was established in 1950,
primarily due to the efforts of the Hameed Nizami, Altaf Hussain, and Hamid
Mahmood. It functioned for a number of years but could not receive much support or
recognition either from the publishers and advertising agencies. Publishers'
organizations also functioned in East Pakistan and Karachi. [1]

In the year 1953, All Pakistan Newspapers Society was formed by merging the existing
groups of publishers. The headquarters were established in Karachi, where it continues
to function.

The APNS handled problems between its members and the provincial or central
governments relating to advertisements, clearance of dues, taxes and duties and
newsprint. It set rules of conduct for member publications and advertising agencies.
These rules provided accreditation to advertising agencies and introduced security
deposits and clearance schedules to member publications. This gave the Society a
mechanism of streamlining advertisement and a clearance system protecting the
collective interests of its member publications, advertising agencies, and advertisers. [1]

The Society also works to develop the science and art of journalism and newspaper
industry. In 1981, the APNS instituted advertising awards in various categories.
Subsequently, the Journalist Awards were launched in 1982. The awards ceremonies
have been held regularly since 1981. [2]

The APNS grew to include publications from small towns and regional language press.
Between 1971 and 2003, the number of publications in the Society rose from 41 to 262.
Along with organizations of editors and journalists, the Society worked against the
Press and Publications Ordinance passed by Ayub Khan in 1960 until its repeal in 1988.
In 1999, the APNS prepared a set of press laws including the Draft for the formation of
Press Council in Pakistan, Registration of Printing Presses, Newspapers Ordinance and
a draft for a Freedom of Information Act. After thorough discussions among the
APNS, CPNE and the Ministry of Information, the drafts on the Press Council and the
Registration of Presses and Newspapers were finalized and enacted in 2002.
