during the journey, a huge
crowd intrudes into the

the seats by force or sit on the
floor blocking all passages,
including to the bathroom.
Even though this has been
brought to the notice of the
TTE and the RPF, they have
expressed their inability in
handling the crowd. This
clearly shows that the railway
staff allow unauthorised pas-
sengers into reserved coaches.
Passengers fear going even to
the washroom as people lock
their way preventing move-
ment. Security and safety of
passengers especially senior
citizens, women and children
are in the dark. Keeping this
situation in view, I wish to ma-
ke a humble request to whoso-
ever concerned to prevent

The Saralasagar project
is 150 km from
Hyderabad and 60 years
after it was commis-
sioned continues to be
the only one-of-its-kind
in India and Asia. The
first such project using
siphon technology was
built in California, USA.
The Saralasagar proj-
ect was initiated and
built by the Wanaparthy
ruler Raja Rameshwara
Rao III and named after
his mother Sarala. It was
completed in 1959 and
inaugurated by
Jawaharlal Nehru.
Raja Rameshwara Rao
III sent his engineer
friend P.S. Ramakrishna
Raju to California to
study the automatic
siphon technology. Raju
learnt the technology,
and returned home and
helped build the Sarala-
sagar dam and other
projects like the ones at
Kinneresani, Pochampad
and Nagulapet.
The foundation stone
was laid on September
15, 1949, by the then mili-
tary Governor of Hyder-
abad, General J.N. Chow-
dary. The contractor for
the project till 1956 was
Sripathi Rao. Work on
the earth dam had
already been initiated,

I
n the summers of 1982 and
1983 I used to work on the
Harvard University cam-
pus as an academic adviser
to international students. One
of the first things I used to do is
to give the incoming foreign
classes a brief history of the
university and a tour of the
campus. I used to enjoy these
sessions and pointed many now
famous alumni to courses, and I
also used to get calls from sev-
eral well-known faculty mem-
bers to send them “interesting”
students. Presumably, I was
considered good at the job, as
the university made it an all-
year assignment, which meant
I could continue with my stud-
ies and get paid as well. My tour
always began with the statue of
John Harvard at Harvard Yard,
and an explanation of the logo

In Roman mythology, Veritas,
meaning truth, was the goddess
of truth, a daughter of Saturn
and the mother of Virtue. It
was believed that she hid in the
bottom of a holy well because

But the statue is not all that it
seems. It is actually nicknamed
the “statue of three lies”
because of all the inaccuracies

Here is the truth behind the
statue: That isn’t John Har-
vard. Even though the name
“John Harvard” is written in
stone on the statue’s base, the

John Harvard. In fact, there are
no living representations of
John Harvard.
In 1884, Daniel Chester
French created the famous stat-
ue, and Sherman Hoar sat as a
model for the head of John
Harvard. Hoar later went on to
serve as a member of Congress
and a US district attorney.
John Harvard wasn’t the
founder of Harvard University.
What? Yes, that’s right. The

Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Harvard was founded in 1638?

University was founded in 1636.

Harvard was originally called
the New College. And its mis-
sion was to train the clergy.
Harvard received its official
famous name on March 13, 1639,
named after the renowned
benefactor seated in “lies.”

Class X boy ends
life at home
Hyderabad: A 16-year-old
Class X boy committed sui-
cide by hanging at his resi-
dence on Sunday morning in
Shabad while his parents
were out. The deceased was
identified as Pravin Kumar,
said the police. “Pravin was
the second child of Venka-
taiah and Sujata, residents of
Antaram village of Shabad.
On Sunday, while his parents
were not home, he tied a
rope to a rod and committed
suicide by hanging,” police
said, adding that the reason
behind the sudden death is
not known. Based on a com-
plaint, a case was booked
and an investigation has
been initiated.

by jumping into the Saroorn-
agar Lake was rescued by
Saroornagar police person-
nel posted at the outpost.
According to Saroornagar

my, the woman identified as
Gangamma, 45, went near
the lake and attempted to
end her life. A police consta-

student committed suicide by
hanging in her hostel at KPHB
Colony after she was caught
using her mobile phone in col-
lege under KPHB police sta-
tion limits on Saturday late
night.

was caught using her mobile
phone in CMS college, where
she was studying. Fearing that
the college would inform her
parents, she committed sui-
cide by hanging. We are wait-
ing for her parents who stay in
Karimnagar.”
The victim was alone in her
room when she killed herself
by hanging to the ceiling.
When her roomate knocked
the door there was no
response.
When she peeped through
the window she found the vic-
tim hanging.
With the help of other hostel
mates she broke open the door.
The hostel warden informed
the police about the incident
and the police registered a
case under Section 174 CrPC.
Her body was later shifted to
Gandhi Hospital for post-
mortem.

paper, Mr Singh said,
“We are the only depart-
ment in the country to
be declared corruption-
free. The death rate of
prisoners has reduced
and we have also taken
up a series of measures
for educating the priso-
ners. Ours is the only
department which is
discharging social resp-
onsibility and service
beyond our call of duty.”
He said corruption
could be ended if the
work environment was
good. “Lack of job satis-
faction is a primary rea-
son why people resort to
corruption. In the jails
here, we have installed
top class equipments
and have also provided
them with gears and
amenities for easy pro-
cessing. This is the only
jail with facilities like
an air conditioned meet-
ing room. Earlier it was
just a ground without
even proper benches,”
he said.
The jail also got rid of
the old iron mesh which
was used as a wall bet-
ween the inmate and the
visitor during mulaqat.

Bharatiya Janata Yuva
Morcha (BJYM) will be
holding its National
Convention at the Bison
Polo and Parade Grounds.
When the Telangana
Rashtra Samiti (TRS) had
held a political event here
in 2015, there was a huge
traffic jam for hours and
traffic moved slowly after-
wards too.
Generally, permission
for political and religious
events at these public ven-
ues is denied by the offi-
cials, but these parties got
the nod from the defence
ministry.
The state BJP members
wrote to the Ministry of
Defence and got the nod
from the ministry on
October 12.
The next day the Local
Military Authority
accorded permission for
the event.

The state government
will not renew bar
licences unless the bar
owner submits a regis-
tration certificate from
the building’s owners.
And building owners are
not keen to give the cer-
tificate. There are about
1,100 bars in Telangana
and 90 per cent of them
are operating in rented
premises. According to
rules, if the bar is situat-
ed in a private building
the licensee has to sub-
mit a registration cer-
tificate from the owner
of the building.
All these years excise
officials have not taken
this requirement seri-
ously and the licensees
have been submitting
stamp paper by paying
stamp duty instead of
submitting a registra-
tion certificate. The
annual licence fee is `48
lakh, to be paid over
three quarters.
The new excise year
started on October 1 and
licensees paid the first
quarter fee. But their
licences are not being
renewed until they sub-
mit the registration cer-
tificate. The government
has given 15 days to sub-
mit the registration cer-
tificate or the licence
will not be renewed.
The owners collect
huge rents from the
licensees but on record
they show a lesser
amount to avoid tax.
Once they register the
building for one year,
they have to show the
actual amount collected
by them.
The owners see this as
a problem. Another
problem is that if the
owner asks the licensee
to vacate the building,
the licensee will not
vacate, showing the reg-
istration certificate.

utamnagar, Malkajgiri,
while constructing box
drainage system. The
broken pipeline has not
been fixed, and drinking
water is going waste for
more than a month,
according to residents.
The work was taken up
by the Metro Water Bo-
ard. After the incident,
residents did not get
drinking water for a few
days. Following compla-
ints, Water Board offici-
als turned up in the area
and promised residents
that they would supply
water on alternate days
with good pressure.
Residents complain
that that the supply lasts
just for about half an
hour, and the pressure is
very low.
Mr Naveen Joseph, a
retired lecturer and a
resident of Malkajgiri,
said, “Many of our resi-
dents are dependent on
piped drinking water
most of the borewells

We are now facing water

their value shown in the
affidavits submitted in
2009 and 2014.
She said she would
lodge a complaint with
the Election Commiss-
ion on the differing
assets shown in Jeevan
Reddy’s affidavits.
Ms Kavitha's oppo-
nents have hit back by
sharing posts counter-
ing her claim that she
had no house of her own
and was staying in a
rented house. Her oppo-
nents shared photo-
graphs of houses which
claimed as belonging to
Ms Kavitha on social
networking.
The affidavits are also
being used by ticket aspi-
rants to defame their
rivals or to reduce their
chances of getting a tick-
et. Contesting candidates
thus have to take extra
care when furnishing
details in their affidavits,
unlike in the past.
Many contesting candi-
dates have shown some
growth in the value of
their properties in their
affidavits submitted in
2009 and 2014 in the old
Adilabad district.
Generally, the candi-
dates take the help of
experts like senior advo-
cates in filing the affi-
davits.

issued a notice to a private TV
channel for airing news
reports deemed to be against
two federal ministers, a media
report said on Sunday.
“From the tickers it was
transpired that the prime min-
ister had expressed displeas-
ure over the performance of
federal finance minister for
his policies,” Dawn reported,
citing the notice issued by the
Pakistan Electronic Media
Regulatory Authority
(PEMRA) on Saturday.
In the notice titled 'Notice on
False News, it said that by air-
ing such reports, the channel
had violated provisions of the
2015 Electronic Media Code of
Conduct.
The regulatory authority
asked the TV channel to prove
authenticity of its reports and
submit a reply by Monday, the
paper reported. It also said if
the channel failed to provide
evidence in support of its
reports, it should tender an
apology.

Cement prices to
rise 10%: CMA
New Delhi: Cement prices
could go up by up to 10 per
cent in the next six months
in order to compensate for
the increased fuel and trans-
portation costs, according to
the industry body. As per
Cement Manufacturers
Association (CMA), the
industry has witnessed 14
per cent growth in H1, there-
by providing an opportunity
for correction of prices. “If
not for anything else, there
is a very dire need to correct

New Delhi: The telecom
department has restricted
enrolment of test sub-
scribers on network of a
new mobile operator to 5
per cent of its network
capacity during trial phase
and testing period to maxi-
mum six months. “The num-
ber of test subscribers that
can be enrolled by a licens-
ee in licensed service area
(LSA or telecom circle) shall
be limited to 5 per cent of
its installed network capaci-
ty for that
LSA,” the

said in its
order. The
order has
come in to
effect from
October 9. The telecom
operator will need to submit
details of network capacity
to the Department of
Telecom (DoT) and Trai at
least 15 days before com-
mencing enrolment of test
