Stories of people who survived the First World War

1. Robert Philips: Robert Philips was a welsh-man, who had signed up to

fight against the Central Powers. Philips was part of the brutal fighting at
Ypres, where he became caught in a poison gas attack. Thousands of men
lost their lives, and Philips barely survived by holding a wet handkerchief
to his face.
For 15 months, he was hold captive by the Germans. He and other
prisoners were beaten many times by the German guards. Robert had to
plan a 322-kilometer long journey to get to the Dutch border, and from
here he could return to Great Britain

2. Wenham Wykeman-Musgrave: fifteen-year-old Wenham Wykeman-

Musgrave was an English midshipman on the ‘Aboukir’ when it was
rocked by an explosion and began to sink. The crew quickly worked to
throw anything that helped the boat sinking offboard, but it didn’t help.
Wenham Wykeman-Musgrave eventually jumped into the water and
swam towards ‘the Hogue’, which was attempting to pick up survivors.
Just as he was climbing aboard ‘the Hogue’, the ship was also hit by a
torpedo.

The terrified midshipman jumped into the water again, and he finally
made it to the ship ‘Cressy’, which was picking up survivors of the two
bombed ships. When Wenham Wykeman-Musgrave was on the ship
‘Cressy’, yet another torpedo blasted ‘Cressy.’ All three torpedoes had
been fired by the German submarine, which sank three cruises in less than
an hour. 1500 men died.
