ear-worn Activity Recognition

The design of the e-AR sensor was inspired by

the human inner ear. The human inner

http://vip.doc.ic.ac.uk/benlo/m775.html
ear consists of an auditory system (the co-
chlea) and a balancing (vestibular) system. Within
the vestibular system there are two sensory mecha-
nisms, called the semicircular canals and the otoliths
for sensing the rotational and translational motions. To
emulate the sensory functions of the human vestibular
system, the e-AR sensor is equipped with a MEMS
(Micro Electro-Mechanical System) 3-axis accelerom-
eter which is capable of detecting acceleration in 3 di- e-AR Lab Test
mensions (up and down, left and right, back and forth).
An accelerometer consists of a mass, and when the
sensor is moved, the mass moves. Electronic sensing
components determine the acceleration. By position-
ing the accelerometer on the ear, the e-AR sensor can
pick up similar information to the vestibular system,
and this records the posture and activities of the user.

through a variety of activities. In addition to helping

improve the construction of artificial joints, the findings
can help tailor effective treatments. Similar to the Na-
tional Science Foundation Small Business Innovation
Research (SBIR) awards that helped MicroStrain de-
velop wireless sensors, this study was supported by
the National Institutes of Health SBIR program.
Because of their durability and heat-resistance,
microsensors are also finding use in testing equipment
under extreme pressures. MicroStrain developed a
sensor called the EmbedSense, which is now helping
researchers study helicopter rotors under the stress
of 50,000 times the force of gravity and to monitor the
hot interiors of truck engines. With microsensor data,
test engines are running with reduced emissions and
10-18 percent improved fuel economy.

heat rate monitor

A heart rate monitor is a personal monitoring

device that allows a subject to measure their heart rate
in real time or record their heart rate for later study.
Early models consisted of a monitoring box with a set
of electrode leads that attached to the chest.

The first wireless EKG Heart rate monitor was

invented in 1977 as a training aid for the Finnish Na-
tional Cross Country Ski team and as ‘intensity train-
ing’ became a popular concept in athletic circles in the
mid-80s, retail sales of wireless personal heart moni-
tors started from 1983. [1] an old man falls onto the ground

Modern heart rate monitors usually comprise

two elements: a chest strap transmitter and a wrist
receiver or mobile phone (which usually doubles as

http://www.lifelinesys.com/content/lifeline-products/auto-alert
a watch or phone). In early plastic straps water or liq-
uid was required to get good performance. Later units
have used conductive smart fabric with built in micro-
processors that analyze the EKG signal to determine
heart rate.

Strapless heart rate monitors now allow the

user to just touch two sensors on a wristwatch dis-
play for a few seconds to view their heart rate. These
are popular for their comfort and ease of use though
they don’t give as much detail as monitors which use
a chest strap.

Body temperature is a vital indicator of one’s

health. A number of diseases are accompanied by
characteristic changes in body temperature. Likewise,
the course of certain diseases can be monitored by
measuring body temperature. The efficiency of many
treatments can be evaluated by monitoring body tem-

disease-specific stimuli, where the setpoint of the tem-

The doctor-patient relationship is deteriorating.

And today’s information technology solutions are ex-

decision-making and episodic care, and they fail to as-

CollaboRhythm is a technological framework

Patients can actively engage with their data, so they
can take action in their lives with doctors serving as
coaches rather than commanders.
Patients of the future will know more about their

RFID Technology

According to the Federal Trade Commission,

RFID technology is not a new technology; it was used
to identify friendly aircraft during World War II. RFID
stands for radio frequency identification technology. In
RFID systems, the object is tagged with a silicon chip
and antenna. This object can then be monitored by
mobile or stationary readers using radio waves. RFID
technology in health care began its integration slowly,
but recent developments in widespread applicability
and cost-effectiveness of these chips has led to major
acceptance throughout the field. rfid unit

The main objective of integrating RFID technol-

ogy into health care systems is the tracking of people,
medicines, samples and objects through the establish-

ment. Patients and employees wear RFID wristbands
or name tags to identify their location and relevant file
information to the system’s main controls. Medicines,
samples, wheelchairs, medical equipment and other
hospital instruments are labeled with RFID tags. Tag-
ging the hospital’s material and personnel allows a
computer operator to quickly identify location and sta-
tus. The materials going in and out of the hospital can
be checked for quality, history and temporal relevance
in order to assay where they need to go and why.

VeinViewer

For patients who dread coming to the hospital

and having blood drawn, there is hope.
The three hospitals of the Community Health-
care System are introducing new technology that will
make it easier to detect veins for the purpose of draw-
ing blood and inserting IVs.
The pain associated with drawing blood or in-
serting an IV is often caused by a needle misdirected
into a vein. For a healthcare professional performing
these procedures, it can be challenging to find the
perfect angle, the perfect location to stick a needle
in a patient’s vein. That challenge, however, is made vein on hand
easier by VeinViewer, diminishing the likelihood that
a patient will endure multiple uncomfortable needle
pricks to find a vein.
VeinViewer projects invisible near-infrared light

http://www.smh.com.au/national/vein-attempts-are-history-
on skin, penetrating as deep as eight millimeters. He-
moglobin in the blood absorbs the light, while the rest
is reflected back to the machine, which shows an im-
age on the skin with the location of the veins. A phle-
botomist or other clinician can map a patient’s vascu-
lature regardless of age, body type or skin tone.v
VeinViewer is particularly beneficial for chil-
dren, whose veins often are difficult to detect. In a
recent study, first-attempt success rate at finding a vi-

able vein improved from 49 percent to 80 percent in
children when using VeinViewer. The average number
of attempts to find a vein for children dropped from

http://uae.born.com/index.php/152/efx-an-energy-boost/
EFX is a mobile technology designed to maxi-
mize performance and well-being in general, increas-
ing balance, strength and flexibility.
This technology consists of frequencies com-
patible with humans and animals at the cellular level.
Because it works instantly when placed in close con-
tact with the body’s bioelectrical field, the functional
performance gains can be easily demonstrated in real
time.

Just as acupuncture or acupressure, EFX’s

energetic boosts/shoots can be strategically placed EFX ENERGY BOOST
to stimulate the body’s specific energy centers or
chakras. As a good therapeutic massage or acupunc-
ture session, EFX eases the energy flow throughout
the main channels and meridians.

Most people are able to feel the immediate ef-

fects. Simple and physiological muscle tests can be
used to validate the effects on balance, strength, flex-
ibility and the easiness of movement.

In other words, EFX is designed to refine and

resonate with your bioelectric frequencies, naturally
produced by your body, to directly influence its func-
tioning and performance. When the body is in har-
mony, the muscles relax, blood flow increases, and
relaxation replaces tension.

This technology represents a unique marriage of water
and sound. The computer-generated pure digital low
frequency and infrasound tones are mostly beyond
the range of human hearing. Playing on CDs through
bass reflex speakers into the water, the tones become
vibrations that when combined with the body’s own
fluid vibrations, provide a powerful inside-out mas-

Sound’s healing potential can be traced back hydrosonic spa

the noted mathematician Pythagoras.

Scientific researchers have documented that

dolphins naturally emit energy and sound vibrations,

which stimulate the release of endorphins and sera-

same principles, the HydroSonic™ Relaxation Table
