Read the following text:

Cristina Sousa is a Portuguese student from Coimbra who decided to improve her English
during her summer holidays. So, she enrolled in a two weeks’ summer course. She chose
the Embassy Oxford School, in Oxford, England, because she had excellent references
about it. Read what she has to say about her experience.

‘It was a wonderful experience! The school was located on one of the city’s
most prestigious streets, near the famous Trinity University. It was close to
cafés, restaurants, supermarkets and shops. The teachers were very nice
and welcoming and the classrooms were modern and well equipped. We
had access to a library, study rooms, a high-tech computer centre with WiFi
Internet access. There was also a student lounge with TV where we went to
relax after classes.

Embassy School isn’t a boarding school, so I stayed with an English family during those two
weeks. It was an excellent opportunity to practise my English, because they didn’t speak
Portuguese, and I really had to try hard to communicate. The host family was selected by
the school. They lived in a beautiful house, only 20 minutes away from the school. I loved
staying with them, because they were very friendly and they had two daughters who were
my age: Janet and Melissa. Every morning, after breakfast, I took the bus to school.

Lessons started at 9 a.m. and finished at 1 p.m. . I learnt a lot and I met people from all
over the world: my class had students from Germany, France, Russia and even Japan! Of
course, the only way to communicate was in English…

The school also offered an animated program of excursions and activities:

we had regular outings to visit the country’s most famous spots – from
Stonehenge to Windsor Castle. Sports fans also had numerous opportunities
to play football, tennis or volleyball. We also visited the Ashmolean museum,
the Sheldonian theatre and the Museum of Natural History. At the weekend
we even went to Stratford-upon-Avon, where the famous William
Shakespeare was born. We also went on a day-trip to London, the capital
city of the UK, where we had the chance to visit the Buckingham Palace,
Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time
to go to Madame Tussaud’s, the famous wax museum…

These were the best summer holidays I’ve ever had. My English got much better and I
made a lot of new friends. Now that I’m back at school, I’m sure my English grades will be
much better!’
