Step Procedure
1. Gather Materials 1a. Gather all PPE before entering the
shop.
1b. Obtain stock from instructor
2. Mark and Cut 2a. Using a tape measure, measure one
Stock 6” length and one 8” length of stock.
2b. Mark with Soap Stone
2c. Use metal cut off saw to cut each
legth.
3. Forge head of 3a. Place the 6” piece into the forge.
hammer 3b. Using the sledge hammer and anvil,
shape one end of the head to a point and
the other end to a flat ridge.
4. Grind Handle 4a. Measure half way down the handle.
4b. Mark with soap stone.
4c. Grind one half of the handle until
smooth and round.
4d. On the other half, use the bench
grinder to square the sides.
5. Grind Head 5a. Smooth out the shape of the
hammer head once cooled from the
forge.
5b. Use the portable disc grinder or the
bench grinder.
6. Weld handle to 6a. Measure half way on the head of the
head. hammer and mark.
6b. Tack the squared end of the handle
to the center of the hammer head.
6c. Run a bead around the connection
point.
7. Grind and Polish 7a. Grind down any parts of weld that
piece. stick out and remove splatter with
grinder.
7b. Using the wire wheel attachment,
polish your finished piece before
turning in.

 Remove slag with another
chipping hammer and wire
brush.
 Use hearing protection while
operating the portable disc

 Remember that the grinder
may jump around a bit when
using the wire wheel.
