Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

To address UDL I would provide multiple means of representation for my students in the form of the
anchor chart. In addition to having it on chart paper in the classroom, I would also provide a copy
online, as well as a handout at each table. I would also allow the students to choose what they want to
write their paragraph about to increase student engagement.

Lesson idea implementation:

To introduce the standard, as a whole group the class will make an anchor chart. This anchor chart
will be titled “Capitalization with M.I.N.T.S.” Each day for one week, the class will fill out one of the
letters of M.I.N.T.S and create their Popplet for the day. The anchor chart and the creation of their
Popplet should take no more than 30 minutes each day.

*M= Months and Days *I= the word I *N= Names *T= Titles *S= Start of a sentence

At the end of the week, the students will use their completed Popplet to write a paragraph containing
at least one example of each category in M.I.N.T.S. This can be differentiated by providing sentence
frames if needed. To extend the learning, I would ask the students to label which category each of
their capitalized words belongs to. I would provide feedback to the students by grading their
paragraph based on the capitalization and writing on the product if any category is missing. The
students would revise their paragraph until all categories had been met.

Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)
To conclude the lesson, the teacher should show the students an example of a paragraph containing
each of the categories. This example as well as the anchor chart should be posted in the classroom as a
resource for the students throughout the school year.

Reflective Practice:

I feel these activities impact student learning in a positive way because the online tool, Popplet, is a
great way to organize each category that needs to be capitalized. As this lesson is one that the students
will continuously use throughout their education, Popplet is a good tool that the students can refer
back to and add words at any time.
