Newton’s Laws Stations

Station 1:
1. Wacky Washers
a. Stack 4 washers and place them on a smooth surface
b. Aim 1 washer at the bottom of the stack give it a good hard flick with your finger
c. Now try to flick a stack of 2 washers into the stack of 4
d. Flick a stack of 4 washers into the stack of 4

1 Washer with a stack of 4:

Observations

1. Knocked the bottom one out but none of the other ones on top moved

2.Knocked the bottom one out but one on top almost fell off

3.hit it to hard and both of the washers flew everywhere

2 washers with a stack of 4:
Observations

1.missed 1.5 missed 1.75. Knocked two washers off the stack but the top 2 where fine

2. Three of the washers stayed on the stack

3. Two of them knocked off but the top two were fine
4 with 4

Observations

All the washers flew off of eachother in every direction because of Newton's law that states for
every action there is always an equal or opposite reaction which proved right then and there that
we were working with Newton's laws.

2. The same thing Occurred as the first trial

3. The same thing Occurred as the first trial as well

2. Bottle Balance
a. Take two bottles and place a dollar bill between the mouths of the bottles.
b. Now try to take the dollar out from between the bottles without the top bottle falling.

Lane: Tried to pull it out but the bottles fell over

Mason: Tried to pull it off bottles fell off and almost over the table also splattered liquid everywhere

Jerod: took the paper off and the bottles almost stayed on top of eachother but fell over.
Station 2:
1. Newton’s Race
a. Place a fan car with the screen behind the fan and turn on the fan car. Record observations.
Remove the screen for steps b and c.
b. Place a fan car at the starting point. Turn on the switch and release the car at the same time
you start a timer. Time how long it take for the car to cross the finish line. Repeat this step 4
more times and average your time data.
c. Add the mass to the a fan car and place it at the starting point. Turn on the switch and
release the car at the same time you start a timer. Time how long it take for the car to cross
the finish line. Repeat this step 4 more times and average your time data.

With no mass:

1 2.17S

2 2.4S

3 2.59S

4 2.21S

5 2.19S

Average time (s): 2.312S Distance traveled (m): 152cm Mass (kg): 168.7 grams

With added mass:

Time (s)

1 3.49s

2 3.53s

3 3.29s

4 3.52s

5 3.40s

Average time (s): 3.446 Distance traveled (m): 152cm Mass (kg):268.7 grams

Station 3:
1. Balloon Rally
a. Inflate a balloon to about the size of a softball and attach it to a flexible straw that is strung
through fishing line.
b. Release the balloon and measure and record the distance that the balloon travels from its
initial position.
c. Repeat this with the softball size balloon 4 more times
1.181cm
2.184cm
3115cm
4.223

1.393cm
2.492cm
3.484cm
4.479cm
d. Inflate a balloon to double the size of a softball and attach it to a flexible straw that is strung
through fishing line.
e. Release the balloon and measure and record the distance that the balloon travels from its
initial position.
f. Repeat this with the double softball size balloon 4 more times

Analysis Questions:
Using Newton’s Laws of motion:
1) Explain the results of wacky washers
All the washers flew off of eachother in every direction because of Newton's law that states for
every action there is always an equal or opposite reaction and this happened. The washer we
flicked into the pile was the action and the opposite reaction was when the washers flew
everywhere.

2) Explain the results of the bottle balance

This one really explains how a object in motion will stay in motion(or at rest) unless a acted upon by
a outside force. So the bottles were at rest until we pulled the piece a paper which was the outside
force to move the bottle.

3) Explain the results of the Newton’s Race

The Newton’s race explained how an object in motion will stay in motion or stay at rest unless acted
upon by an outside force and in our test that was the fan that moved the car that was once
stationary. We can also use this data to figure out the acceleration of the car with x = ½ at2 + vot + xo

4) Explain the results of the Balloon Rally

This one explained how F=ma and a object in motion will stay in motion(or at rest) unless a acted
upon by a outside force. So the balloon stayed at rest until we let the air fly out of it, then it slowed
down once the air was out of the balloon. So the air was the outside force. This one could also be
related to for every action there is always an equal or opposite reaction. The the action was air
blowing out of the balloon then the reaction was when the balloon started moving forward

5) Using you time and distance data and the model from your kinematics lab: (x = ½ at2 + vot + xo),
determine the acceleration of the fan car with and without the added mass. Show your work.
6) Using the acceleration that you calculated in step 3 and the F = ma, determine the force generated
from the fan car with and without the added mass. Show your work.
