The Tunneling Industry works in a variety of ground conditions from Mature and well-
formed grounds to young and still forming conditions. The first thing required for 2
safety underground is strong and reliable rock support of excavated area.
The principle of rock support system design is to let excavated rock support itself. It is
done through Rock Bolting ( SN Bolts, Self Drilling Bolts etc. ) and Rock Support System
( “I” Beams, Lattice Girders, “TH” Profiles, Shotcrete etc. ). While Rock bolts form a
part of the rock mass and restrict any internal movements. The rock support steel
arches / shotcrete restrict the movement of rock mass externally.
The self-drilling hollow rock bolt systems are used underground to produce soil nails,
ground anchors and micro piles with a minimum mobilization of equipment and
manpower, and are thus a reliable, simple and fast rock support solution.
Self Drilling Systems Applications
Self-drilling hollow rock bolts are made of fine grained hollow steel bars or
glass fiber reinforced polymer hollow bars. Since they are all threaded bars, any
design length of such bars is possible by using extension couplers. The coarse
threading allows excellent grout adhesion of full grout column and this hollow bar
thus acts as a drill rod, reinforcement bar and a grouting pipe all at one go. These
properties are very useful for ground support in loose soils and collapsible
conditions.
3
These anchors are also used with or without inflatable packers for injection
grouting in case of water ingress in tunnels and strata consolidation using chemical
grouts.
They are available in cold rolled Rope Thread profile ( For R25, R32, R38 and R51 )
and Trapezoidal Thread Profile for T76 in typically three yield load combinations.

Self-drilling bolts consists of a special fine grain, high alloy, seamless fully threaded
hollow-core steel bar or glass fiber reinforced polymer hollow bar which is designed to
be drilled and grouted into varying strata like loose or collapsing ground without casing.
Self-drilling bolts work as a reinforcing element and has a hollow core for carrying the
air/ water for flushing of debris and keeping the drill grout holes open or grout used for
drilling. Self-drilling bolts can be drilled and post grouted or installed using
simultaneous drilling and grouting.
Self-drilling bolts are manufactured with a continuous left hand thread (Rope or
Trapezoidal thread) and can be extended by the use of extension couplings. Standard
adapters are used to connect to the percussion drilling equipment. The rotation and
impact energy is transferred through the self-drilling bolt down to the drill bit to
advance it through the strata. The grout is injected under pressure through a grout
coupling into the bolt and exits through holes in the sacrificed drill bits

- Forepoling
- Face stabilization
- Portal preparation
- Ground Stabilization to counter uplift forces.
- Chemical Grouting to stop water ingress in Tunnels.

This is the most widely used thread profile in self-drilling hollow rock bolts for
diameters up to 38mm (up to 51mm in some cases). The advantage of this profile is
its coarse thread of 2 threads per inch that provides excellent bonding with grout
and is easy to couple and decouple.
Trapezoidal Threads
29°
P/2
Since coupling and uncoupling of rope threads is cumbersome with large diameters,
trapezoidal threads are best suited for larger diameters (51mm upwards). Trapezoidal
threads also show a better crack resistance in grout as compared to Rope threads due
to its better bond friction properties.

Sacrificial Drill Bits
Drill bits are a small but most critical component of rock anchoring. Dextra
self-drilling hollow rock bolt systems offer various types of the sacrificial drill
bits suited for various types of soil medium, as shown below. The choice of
drill bit is crucial as a wrong type of drill bit can result in a slow insertion of the
bolt and an impossibility to reach the required depth.
8
1. Geology
2. Length of Anchor
3. Annular Space requirements.
1. The strata usually consist of various proportions of Sand and Gravel with
Clay. It is important to know the local Geology in order to achieve optimum
penetration speeds and cutting abilities.
2. Although these are sacrificial parts, the selection of drill bits have critical
repercussions on the installation process and success of the rock anchoring. Since
sacrificial drill bits require a “burst” performance, i.e. a very high performance for
short duration, they must be adapted to the ground they will be drilling. Besides, the
selection criteria depend also on the length of the anchor bar, which in turn depends
upon the application. Hence for same type of geology, when Soil Nailing, Rock
Anchoring or Micro Piling are required, different types of bits will be used, with a
different life expectancy.
3. Site conditions sometimes require a larger annular volume. It could be due to
very unstable soil conditions and low annular space may be getting blocked due to
design factors or collapse of hole.
Soil Classification
Of the three variables affecting the choice of drill bits listed above, the Geology is
the most challenging parameter for decision makers. A drill bit must be able to
penetrate constantly varying strata at a desired rate, without getting blocked and
without changing its path. It is very important for the consultant and the supplier
to use a benchmark code for referring soil types. BS EN ISO 14688-1 classifies soil
and is used for reference by Dextra self-drilling hollow rock bolts for suggesting
drill bits for its anchors. 9

Extension Coupling
The extension coupling sleeves are intended for connecting the drill rods and are
manufactured from the fine-grained high-grade steel with a machined internal
Thread.
Adapter Coupling
While the self-drilling anchor bars diameter varies as per design, the shanak adapter
of percussive rotary drilling machine remains the same. As it creates a mismatch
between the shanak adapter and Dextra self-drilling hollow bolts, adaptor couplings
are used to connect self-drilling bolts to shanak adaptor. Couplings are used in step
down format as the machine torque requirements will go up otherwise. Adaptor
couplings are heat treated for a longer service life.

Plates
Bearing plates are referred as the “unsung heroes” of a ground support system as
they are a critical element in system design. The increasing use of long tendon
support is resulting in greater loads being generated at the collar of the bolts and
hence on the bearing plates. The plates should be designed for the same load
capacity as the bolts they are used with. The plates should have a yielding
character that is provided its domed shape.

Self drilling hollow rock bolts.
Centralizers
The self-drilling hollow rock bolts centralizers are manufactured from rigid PVC with
various diameters matching the inside diameters of extension couplers. Centralizers
are designed to ensure that the bar is centered in the grout column, and provide
effective penetration of grout and uniform grout covering to the Anchor bar.

The self-drilling hollow rock bolts are exposed to moisture through cracks
developed in grout cover over a period of time and thus are exposed to corrosion.
The type of corrosion protection required depends upon the end application of the
anchors.
If the anchors are used for temporary applications with a service life below two 17
years, the corrosion protection is achieved through grout cover. The recommend
grout cover should be 10 mm in rocky strata while it should be doubled in soily
strata conditions. The grout cover can be increased when the size of the drill bit
increases. However if the strata is very corrosive even for temporary support,
galvanized anchors should be used.
If the anchors are used for permanent applications with a service life above 50
years, they can be hot dip galvanized according to EN-1461. They can also be
epoxy-coated. Sacrificial corrosion can also be accounted for in design stage of
such members.
