Dear Parents

My name is Kevin Reid, and I am the 6th grade math teacher at OWNCS. This is a very
special year as it its my 4th year teaching math here. This year we are kicking it up and
innovating our pedagogies and teacher approach. First on our agenda is our Project Based
learning approach or PBL. The 6th Grade Math PBL will be with section 602. Our PBL will be
setting up a Production studio, in which we will explore the correlation between what we learn in
6th grade math and different jobs and careers. Throughout the weeks we will invite different
experts and professionals from our community in to our classroom for presentations and to be
part of our lessons. Our Project will meet all 6th grade Common Core State Standards and
Mathematical Practices, with some NY Next Gen Standards adaptations, It will also meet some
7th and 8th grade standards. Part of our PBL will also collaborate with our annual career day
and fundraise for our end of the year BBQ!!! More information will be made available shortly.
We will have:
● Common Core Constructed Response Quizzes, every Friday.
● 3 Tests per quarter
○ 2 Medium assessments (The lowest gets dropped at the quarter)
○ 1 Quarterly assessment (does not get dropped)
● 2 Cumulative projects per quarter.
○ The first will be smaller but it will contribute to the larger latter project
● 3 i-ready Diagnosis test
○ The first one will be Tuesday September 11th and Wednesday
September 12th.
○ The second one will occur in January.
○ And the final diagnostic will be in June.
● Hands on Labs and Explorations
● Khan Academy 5 hours per quarter.
● Video and digital portfolios
● Daily homework
● Classroom participation & What’s up book points

Responsive Classroom and Flexible seating are 2 important teaching approaches we will
be implementing in our curriculum, More information on those will be provided latter, as I am still
learning myself.

I do not provide Private tutoring for my 6th grades, Extra help will be available later in the
semester.

Deadlines will be strictly implemented this year! I usually give students till the last day of the
quarter to turn in missing assignment, but I realized I wasn’t doing them any favors and
promoted procrastination. NO ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED 3 BUSINESS DAYS
BEFORE THE END OF THE QUARTER NO EXCEPTIONS. An outline of the year with due
dates and upcoming projects will be provided, Be advised it is still evolving and is subject to
change but it allows for a good idea of the pacing we should expect. It will also be available on
My teacher Website, google classroom, and powerschool. PLEASE CHECK FREQUENTLY AS
IT IS CONSTANTLY EVOLVING!

Textbooks are available but must be returned at the end of the year.

Open door Policy: If you would like to visit the classroom to observe instructional time you're
welcome to do so. We will have to limit the visits to not overwhelm students. For a visit please
