Adolescent Development & Teaching

Assessment 2 – Reflection

As a teacher my philosophy employs equity and equality amongst

each student to assist their learning development through school. I
understand that students attain developmental issues and that
there are strategies to teach around these issues. My viewpoint of
teaching focuses on the biopsychosocial factors of students and
how these factors may be affecting their learning ability. Teaching
content in my Key Learning Area (KLA) of Biology connects with
the physical/biological development of students to identify their
physiological changes.

Throughout the subject of Adolescent Development and Teaching I

have learnt theories, concepts and the importance adolescence
has on teaching. Developmental issues such as Biological, Social,
Cognitive, and others help explain the troubles of an adolescent
and why adolescents are behaving in a certain manner.

Acknowledging the differentiation between each student and

effectively teaching to the students needs so they develop a better
understanding creates a great teacher. Providing a safe learning
environment where discussions, perspectives and opinions
towards content establish effective teaching. To become an
effective teacher requires understanding and utilising the
Australian Professional Standards of Teachers and the NSW
Quality Teaching model, which is implemented into the learning
environment.

Understanding the differences among students allows me as a

teacher to know a student on a deeper level and understand how
they learn. Acknowledging the developmental issues students are
acquiring in my KLA of Biology can offer the reasons for these
changes connecting to the biopschosocial approach. Finding the
links between developmental issues creates a further
understanding of what students need to learn effectively.

Implementing school educational programs about developmental

issues can address the students certain issue and the reasons for
the issue happening. Support from teachers, parents, the
community, and friends present social help producing a protective
role against the negative effects of development issues.
Approaches to help developmental issues increase positive
learning outcomes for students that are important for educational
achievement. These approaches integrated into a lesson allow me
to encourage student engagement and increase the learning
quality for my students.
