The Year 12 Formal this year is at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse. Many thanks on HSC Assessment
to the Student Advisers, Vanessa Wickens, Natasha Scott and Tim followed by
Macintyre for organising this event and for all their work supporting Year 12 Friends of Wyndham
students throughout the year. at 7pm

During the recent school holidays Karen Smith, Dannielle Morais and I had
the great pleasure of attending an award ceremony at NSW Parliament Wyndham
House for the National Council of Women of NSW Dame Marie Bashir Peace Whispers will be
Awards 2018. These awards recognise students who have shown qualities of emailed to all
leadership in their contributions to harmony or social justice. Year 12
members
student, Rola Elayan, was the successful recipient of a Highly Commended
Certificate. Congratulations Rola.
Wyndham College OCTOBER 2018

Year 11 participated in a Crossroads Day on Tuesday 16th and the My HSC Conference Day on Wednesday
17th October. This was an opportunity for students to learn about their responsibilities as a Year 12
student and as a young adult as well as the NESA rules and procedures for a successful HSC. I would like
to impress upon both Year 12 and parents the importance of attendance in every class. Good attendance
is closely linked to successful achievement. Students were issued with the HSC Assessment Booklet and
students are encouraged to add to a diary or calendar when the Year 12 Assessment Tasks are due for
each of their subjects. All assessment tasks from this point will form part of the students’ HSC Mark in
2019. Many thanks to David Macleod-Jones, Sue Beamer, Dallas Richmond, David Ryan and Nathan
Hulands and their team for organising the days.

Classa Martinuzzi – Relieving College Principal

FROM THE YEAR 11 DEPUTY

Year 12 has begun

Students at Wyndham College have commenced the transition to Higher School Certificate courses. This
means that HSC assessment tasks will begin this term and you are expected to complete them. Students
are reminded that all Year 12 Assessment tasks will form part of the student’s HSC mark – the school
assessments form 50% and the HSC examinations make up the other 50% of their final HSC mark.

Attendance is an important part of completion for your HSC. Already there are a significant number of
students whose attendance has fallen away. All students are expected to be in every one of their
timetabled classes, on time and learning. Unnecessary absences and truancy are placing students into
‘dangerous territory’ and unexplained absences will be considered as evidence of someone being a non-
serious student whose continuation at Wyndham may be questioned.

Car Parking

Many students will be receiving driving licences over the Christmas break so parking will again become an
issue. All students who drive to school must register their cars, using a form available from the front
office. You are allowed to use the north end of front car park and the ‘new’ student car park. Please be
aware that the first bay is reserved for Wyndham staff, the second for John Paul II staff and both
Wyndham and John Paul II students can use the two most northerly bays on a ‘first in, first served basis’.
Do not park in staff reserved areas nor the parking spaces reserved for the Tradewynds Cafe’.

Uniform – Is Santa bringing you black shoes for Christmas?

Thank you for keeping up the standard. Some of you are slipping, particularly in the area of footwear. Our
uniform code states that black leather shoes are the uniform, so if you are buying new shoes or placing an
order with Santa, remember black leather shoes! Foot safety is a WHS issue therefore you can expect
restricted entry into science and other practical subject areas.
Please note that students are not to come to school in track pants or leggings. Students continually in
inappropriate clothing, that is, clothing that is not the official Wyndham College uniform, will be sent
home to change and/or issued with a Formal Caution of suspension.

Completing your financial responsibilities

If you took subjects that had a cost attached to them you would have done so knowing what the costs
were. Materials have been purchased for you and paid for on your behalf, now it’s your turn. Please
complete your obligations very soon.

David Macleod-Jones – Deputy Principal

FROM THE YEAR 12 DEPUTY

At the time of writing, we have just wished our students good luck as they entered the hall to sit their
very first HSC exam. It has been lovely and encouraging to see many students come into the College over
the holidays and over the past week to spend time with their dedicated teachers to make final
preparations for their exams. I imagine all households are happy to get the exams underway, and we join
with you in wishing our students all the best during the exam period.

For any last minute HSC timetable questions, it can be viewed on the NESA website at :

http://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/11-12/hsc/key-dates-exam-timetables/hsc-
written-exam-timetable.

It is important that students arrive ahead of time to all exams, with all necessary equipment including
their student number, and come prepared to stay for the duration of the exam.

Results are released to students on Thursday December 13th. The staff at Wyndham College invite
students return to the College on Friday 14th December for a Morning Tea which will be held outside of B
Block at 9.40am. This is for students to share and celebrate their result with us. We encourage all
students to join us at this Morning Tea.

On Thursday 14 February 2019 at 10.15am the College will be holding a Celebration Assembly to
recognise and congratulate high achievers in the HSC 2018.

To enable this to happen, we need to know student’s ATAR results as the school is not provided with
these. We hope to gather this information at the Morning Tea, however if you are not able to attend, we
encourage students to please call the College on 9208 7100 to inform us of your ATAR so that we can
celebrate individual student success at this assembly.

Appeal due to Illness/Misadventure at the time of the H.S.C

If a student believes that their performance in the examination is diminished because of circumstances
beyond their control they can lodge an illness/misadventure appeal.

Appeals may be granted if:

• The student’s performance in an exam has been affected by illness or misadventure suffered
immediately before or during the exam period.
• The student was prevented from attending an exam due to illness and /or misadventure.

3
Wyndham College OCTOBER 2018

If the above occurs students must inform the College before the examination commences. It is
important to attend the examination where possible, even in the case of illness/misadventure. If you are
absent from an examination and the Board of Studies decline your appeal you will not receive a result for
that course. This could mean that you become ineligible for the award of the Higher School Certificate.

The HSC Presiding Officer, Mr Robert Key must be informed at the commencement of the examination
and he will issue the appeal form. He will also outline all requirements related to any appeal.
Students who wish to appeal must provide written professional evidence e.g. in the event of an illness a
doctor’s report. A note from home will not be sufficient.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all Year 12 students for their achievements and wish
them all the best for their final exams and for life after Wyndham College.

Kellie Boyd – Relieving Deputy Principal

Year 12 for 2019 had their first Crossroads Day on Tuesday 16 October, which was highly successful. Staff
and external presenters provided a variety of activities including sessions on Safe Sex(use of condoms,
consent, importance of communication and using accurate websites for information) , Careers, Sleep,
Looking after your friends, teamwork, motivational guest speaker Janelle Lindsay and Drug & Alcohol
presenter Tom Reynolds. An important day, that provided a variety of interesting and informative
sessions, which hopefully lead to many interesting discussions at home as a follow up to the diverse
sessions covered on the day.

Year 12 students, 2019 also had their Elevate session on Student Elevation, A Guide to Success, during
Week 1, Thursday 18 October. Hopefully it will provide important advice and ideas to improve
performances during Year 12. Students are reminded that they can access resources from
elevateeducation.com to support them with their studies. The password is rondo.
Another Crossroads Day will be provided for Year 12, 2019 this term. Date and details to be made
available soon.

includes the $30 Crossroads fee. If there are financial difficulties parents/ students are encouraged to
complete the student assistance form now to work out a plan to assist with payments. Year Advisers
have these forms or ask at the Front office.

A reminder to parents and students to please keep us informed about changes to your circumstances eg
phone numbers, addresses, emergency contact people, health issues, major life changes eg significant
illnesses or deaths in families etc. It is imperative that we keep up to date records to ensure a supportive
school community. Your assistance is essential.

FROM THE SRC

On Tuesday 2nd October, Rola Elayan attended the Parliament House in Sydney where she received a
prestigious award for being a successful applicant in the NSW Dame Marie Bashir Peace Awards. Out of
hundreds of schools and students who applied for this award, Rola was 1 out of 11 students to receive
this.

At the award ceremony, Rola discussed her various contributions towards social justice, peace and
harmony both in and outside the school community, with fellow applicants and leaders.

Rola had the pleasure of meeting Marie Bashir herself. Marie is the former and second longest serving
Governor of New South Wales. She held various medical positions, with a particular emphasis in
psychiatry and she also served as the Chancellor of the University of Sydney.

We at Wyndham College are so proud of Rola’s efforts and as always, what our students are capable of. It
was truly an honour for Rola and our school and a great way to finish up her school years!

FROM THE DANCE DEPARTMENT

SOME EXCITING DANCE NEWS!!!

Congratulations to Year 12 Dance students Breannon Thompson and Carmel Edgerley who have been
nominated for Callback 2018.

Callback is the showcase of exemplary performances and compositions by Year 12 dance students in
NSW.

Breannon has been nominated for Core Performance, Core Composition and Major Study Performance.

Carmel has been nominated for Core Composition.

A special mention should also go to their dancers Taylor Scott and Ramt Trinidad who were dedicated and
committed to rehearsals and performance of the compositions.

The girls now need to provide a video of their performances for final consideration for Callback, which will
take place in Sydney early next year.

This is a wonderful achievement for both Breannon and Carmel and a true reflection of their hard work
and dedication to Dance over the last 18months. Congratulations Girls!

Tell Them From Me parent survey

What is the Partners in Learning parent survey?
The Partners in Learning parent survey is part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys on student
engagement. The parent survey helps to clarify and strengthen the important relationship between
parent and school.

The survey is designed to measure, assess and report insights from the parent point of view at the school
and system levels. The focus of this NSW survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective
teaching practices.

The parent survey provides school principals and school leaders with parents’ perspectives on their school
as well as learning at home. Communication between parents and staff, activities and practices at home,
and parent views on the school’s support of learning and behaviour help build an accurate and timely
picture that schools can use for practical improvements.

Closing date: 26 October
