Looking at the

SANCTUARY
Movement

\"- I
·'

Roske/Sholin
There are many ways to deal with a subject. Sometimes a
cartoon can say as much as a lengthy article or even a book.
Here are some statements on SANCTUARY. The idea
begins in Hebrew scripture. It takes shape repeatedly in early
church history. Rome and Geneva restate that history in
making room for refugees who might have suffered great
injustice without that sanctuary. Slaves in America were
shielded in their flight to freedom. Some Jews and others
were saved from the holocaust under Hitler with the help of
sanctuary workers.
Today more than 200 Roman Catholic parishes, Quaker
meetings, Protestant congregations, and Jewish synagogues
have publically defied the United States government by
proclaiming their houses of God sanctuaries for refugees
from El Salvador, Guatemala, and other Central American
countries. The refugees are undocumented and subject to
deportation by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization
Service. And deportation could mean imprisonment
or execution.
Do you get the picture? If you do, you might want to be
a part of this movement. Buy this book, or send in a
generous donation, or ask your neighborhood church or
synagogue to become part of this caring band. Real human
beings have to care for the oppressed even if their governments
do not like it. Life is conflict. Which side are you on in
this one?
