Stock volatility could affect county projects

Recent Dow drops put hospital trust fund profits in jeopardy

Lowndes County super-
visors are keeping a careful
eye on the stock market after
a volatile October threatens
to wipe out the profits gained
earlier this year in the county’s
$32.5-million hospital trust
fund.
“If the market ended in De-
cember where it is as of today,
we wouldn’t be able to draw out
any money,” Board President
Harry Sanders said Friday. “I
wouldn’t say I’m worried, but
I am concerned. A lot can hap-
pen between now and Dec. 31.”
Since 2014, when state laws
were changed to allow the
county to invest the hospital
money in the market, the coun-
ty has withdrawn $3,923,706
in profits while increasing the
trust fund’s value by $2 million
as the stock market continued
its record bull market.
The recent turmoil in the
market suggests this year may
be a different story, however.
“As of the close of the mar-
ket yesterday, the fund was

Senator open to debate in potential Mississippi runoff

very civil.”

appointed Hyde-Smith to tem-
porarily succeed Republican
Sen. Thad Cochran, who re-
signed in April.
She has declined to debate
all three challengers before the
Nov. 6 election. They are Espy,
who’s a former congressman
and former U.S. agriculture sec-
retary; Chris McDaniel, who’s a
Republican state senator with
tea party support; and Tobey
Bernard Bartee, a Democrat
who is a former military intelli-
gence officer.
Party labels will not appear
on the ballot. If nobody wins a
majority, the top two advance
to a Nov. 27 runoff. The winner
will serve the final two years of a
six-year term Cochran started.
Hyde-Smith served 11 years
as a Democrat in the Missis-
sippi Senate before switching
parties in 2010 and winning
statewide races for agriculture
commissioner as a Republican
in 2011 and 2015. She has been
endorsed in the Senate race by
President Donald Trump.
Hyde-Smith said voters
would see “clear” ideological
differences between her and
Espy.
“I am very conservative. I am
not liberal at all,” Hyde-Smith
told the newspaper. “I am there
to support the Republican agen-
da. I’m not there to support the
Chuck Schumer agenda, like
Mike Espy would be.”
Schumer, of New York, is
the Senate Democratic lead-
er. Espy has said repeatedly
in campaign appearances that
although he is a Democrat, he
would not always follow party
leaders.
“I’ll be a small I senator,
someone who is independent
and someone who reaches
across the chasm to work with
anyone — Republicans, inde-
pendents, other Democrats,”
Espy said during a Sept. 22
event in Jackson. “I just don’t
care where the idea comes
from. I’m a Democrat, but I’m a
Mississippian first. So, the only
decision I have to make, wher-
ever the idea emanates from —
is it good for Mississippi or is it
not good for Mississippi?”
McDaniel, who nearly de-
feated Cochran in a hard-fought
2014 Republican primary, said
Wednesday during a campaign
appearance in Jackson that
Hyde-Smith and Espy are “life-
time Democrats.”
“We know their policies
have been inclined toward big
government their entire lives,”
McDaniel said. “To the extent
that they stand in front of the
people of this state, they can’t
hide behind those commercials
any longer. They can’t hide be-
hind consultants any longer.
That’s why debates are so im-
portant.”
An NBC News/Marist poll
released Tuesday shows the
special election has a strong
chance of going to a runoff. It
showed Hyde-Smith with sup-
port from 38 percent of likely
voters, Espy with 29 percent,
McDaniel with 15 percent and
Bartee with 2 percent. Fifteen
percent said they’re undecided.
The poll was conducted Oct.
13-18 and included 511 likely
voters in Mississippi. The mar-
gin of error is listed as plus or
minus 6.1 percentage points.

In the summer of 1955,
Parker and Till traveled
from Chicago to the Mis-
sissippi Delta to visit rela-
tives.
Parker recalled that
he heard 14-year-old Till
whistle at a white woman
working at a grocery store

cancer, you think about
what?” she asked her
audience. “Death. ... Well
I want to let you know, you
don’t have to die.”
The ‘lucky’ one
Greene-Leech said

most about having breast
cancer was the way she
discovered it.
“I sat around for about
a week or maybe two or
maybe three saying, ‘Oh,
it’s going to go away. It’s
just a boil or something,
or maybe it’s the new bra
I bought that has rubbed
me wrong,’” she told her
audience at the breast
cancer event Wednesday.
It still came as a
surprise when her doctor
confirmed it was can-
cer. Even though breast
cancer was on her mind
because a friend had
just passed away from
it, Greene-Leech knew
breast cancer wasn’t com-
mon in her family.
“I looked at that doctor
and I said, ‘No way I have
breast cancer. It’s not in
my family. My mother
didn’t have it, my grand-
mother didn’t have it,
none of my sisters have
it,’” she said. “And he said
to me, ‘You’re the lucky
one that got it.’ Lucky?”
Gretta Gardner, a
cousin to Greene-Leech,
said the whole family
was surprised after the
diagnosis.
“We all questioned
one another,” Gardner
said. “And we’re just glad
she found it in time, you
know? She’s the only one
that we know of that had
it.”
She said while most of
the family made sure to
get mammograms, it still
served as a wake-up call
for them.
“Sometimes we get
caught up with, ‘Well, my
mama didn’t have it, my
sister didn’t have it, my
grandmama didn’t have it,
so we don’t have to worry
about it,’” Gardner said.
“So I’m sure this was a
wake-up call to my entire
family and a lot of her

through her treatment
and everything, she never
gave in and she never
gave up.”
Greene-Leech said now
she talks to all the women
in her family — including
her two daughters —
about breast cancer and
the importance of routine
screenings. She told the
crowd Wednesday she be-
lieves God saved her from
cancer so she could be an
encouragement to other
people going through it.
“Keep the faith,” she
said. “Say your prayer
and do what you need to
do. If you need to cry, cry.
There’s nothing wrong
with crying. Some days
you may find that the
tears just won’t stop. Well
let them flow.
“And when they do
stop,” she added, “dry
your eyes, get up and put
on a new headdress, put
on some lipstick and get
out.”

What does it mean to support
our troops in a tangible way?
Mississippi State University
provides a good example of that
through its Center for America’s
Veterans.
Monday, the center’s director,
Brian Locke, shared what the
MSU program is doing for veter-
ans during a visit to the Starkville
Rotary Club.
Located in Nusz Hall on the
northern part of campus, the
center is a 7,500 square foot facility
that opened in 2016 and boasts
a range of amenities for student
veterans, including private study
rooms, free copying and printing,
a lounge and a multi-purpose
room — all features for the largest
population of student veterans or
veteran family members of any
university in the state, Locke said.
These accommodations are
important because veterans often
feel out of place on the typical
college campus. Student veterans
are, on average 10 to 12 years
older than the student population
and their life experiences in the
military are far different than those
of the young people who dominate
campus life.
Their challenges are often
unique, too. Many are married, of-
ten with children. They bare adult
responsibilities that the average
college student does not have to
cope with.
Yet according to the university’s
fall enrollment data, veterans make
up 13 percent of the student body, a
total of 2,810 students.
That MSU has chosen to recog-
nize the special circumstances our
veteran students face by devoting
resources to aid them during their
academic careers is a tangible
means of putting words to action.
When veterans feel welcomed,
when they feel accepted, when
there is help to navigate some of
their unique challenges, they are
receiving the kind of support that
matters most.

America. We’ve seen caravans before.
There was a 1,500-person caravan that
marched north just this past April. Of
the band, only 400 actually reached
the border and requested asylum. On
average, about 22 percent of asylum
requests are granted.
Now, contrary to the tone of some
left-leaning coverage, it is not inhu-
mane to say that there is no “right” to
enter the United States. We don’t have
an open-door policy. We have laws and
procedures. One of those is asylum.
The caravan coverage on the left
is all about babies in strollers and
desperate women seeking refuge
from criminals. And those stories are
heart-wrenching. What they rarely
acknowledge is that many migrants,
especially able-bodied young men, are
simply seeking a better life. There’s
nothing immoral about that (in their
place, I would do the same), but neither those nations fight drug traffickers
do they get priority in immigration
just because they live in a miserable
country. To abolish ICE, as some on the caravan — still 1,000 miles away — as
left demand, would be the equivalent of a “crisis” and the Pentagon has an-
throwing open our borders.
Further, only the hopelessly naive
would deny that advocates for immi-
grants do sometimes coach them.

Clearly not all asylum
requests are bogus or man-
ufactured, but some are. Things are
desperately bad in Honduras and other

do need asylum. Would you repeal
our asylum laws because some make
unverifiable claims?
That brings us to the right’s tone
about the caravan. Congressman Matt
Gaetz made the wild charge that the
Hondurans were being paid by George
Soros to make the trek and “storm the
US border.” President Trump has been
sounding the klaxon. The caravan is
an “assault on our country,” that the
“Democrats had something to do with”
and contains “criminals” and “unknown
Middle Easterners.” He threatened to
cut aid to Central American nations,
which the Heritage Foundation has
cautioned against, since U.S. aid helps
and other criminals. The White House
issued talking points describing the

The right is treating these migrants
as an invading army. Photos are rico-
cheting around social media showing
Mexican police bloodied by encounters
with the caravan. The photos are fake.
They’re from 2012, when Mexican
police and student protesters got into
an altercation. Another inciting photo
shows two masked men burning an
American flag on which a swastika has
been painted. That photo is from an un-
related protest near the U.S. embassy
and had nothing to do with the caravan.
There are an estimated 7,000 foot-
sore marchers. Over the course of the
next few weeks, it will dwindle. Many
will seek asylum in Mexico. Others will
turn back.
Though you’d never guess it from
the tone of our politics, illegal immigra-
tion is at a 40-year low. Mexicans (per
capita income $17,740) once accounted
for 98 percent of illegal crossings. That
has now dropped to 50 percent. Mexico
is getting more prosperous, which, for
many reasons, including illegal immi-
gration, is what we should want for all
of Latin America. The total number of
yearly illegal entries has declined from
1.5 million in 2000 to about 300,000
today. We might want to increase the
number of immigration judges on the
border, the better to process claims of
asylum. But let’s keep our perspective.
As the Weekly Standard’s Jim Swift re-
minds us, during its heyday at the turn
of the 20th century, Ellis Island was
admitting 5,000 immigrants per day.
A caravan of poor people marching
north to signify their misery is not a
national emergency. Our inability to
keep our heads might be.

WASHINGTON — With just two
weeks to go until the critical mid-
term elections, an overwhelming
majority of Americans say the Unit-
ed States is greatly divided, accord-
ing to an Associated Press-NORC
Center for Public Affairs Research
poll. Few Americans believe those
stark divisions will get better any-
time soon.
The newly released survey found
that more than 8 in 10 Americans
think the country is greatly divided
about important values. Just 20 per-
cent of Americans say they think
the country will become less divid-
ed over the next few years, and 39
percent think things will get worse.
A strong majority of Americans,
77 percent, say they are dissatis-
fied with the state of politics in the
country.
The poll was conducted Oct.
11-14 in the final sprint to the mid-
term elections, in which President
Donald Trump has been rallying
his supporters to turn out to vote
in November. Overall, 59 percent
of Americans disapprove of how
Trump, a Republican, is handling
his job as president, while 40 per-
cent of Americans approve.
How Americans view Trump di-
vides along partisan lines, accord-
ing to the poll. While 83 percent of
Republicans approve of how Trump
is handling his job, 92 percent of
Democrats and 61 percent of inde-
pendents say they do not approve.
According to the poll, nearly half
of Americans say they aren’t hear-
ing enough from campaigns about
the issues that matter most to them.
Fifty-four percent of Democrats
and 44 percent of Republicans say
they are hearing too little about key
issues.
Overall, top issues for Ameri-
cans include health care, educa-
tion, economic growth, Social Se-
curity and crime, each of which was
called very important by at least
three-quarters of Americans.

STARKVILLE — There’s a reason Joe
Moorhead mentions explosive plays as much as
he does and tracks them so extensively.
His experience — and some numbers he has
seen in the advanced statistics world — suggest
they impact winning more than most.
In the face of offensive struggles unlike any
other in his career, Mississippi State’s football
coach is looking for way to create more of them
for the way out.
“We’re running the ball very well and we need
to find a way to create more explosive plays in
addition to the ones we’re doing in the run game
with the pass game,” Moorhead said.
Moorhead said earlier in the season his sys-
tem doesn’t require players to break the system

Pichaikool primed
to earn first win
to boost résumé

STARKVILLE — Peng Pichaikool follows his
cue. He leaves the putting green, takes a seat in
his coach’s office, and answers a few questions.
Pichaikool is polite. He’s not dismissive, but
he’s not overwhelmingly forthcoming, either. He
then retreats to the back of the room and grabs
a few peanut M&M’s while teammate Garrett
Johnson answers a few questions.

found his way through the barrier.

another breakthrough: his first
victory as a Bulldog.
Despite finishing second three
times, Pichaikool is making a case
Pichaikool to become the best player in MSU
men’s golf history. He will try to
bolster his résumé starting Saturday when MSU
opens play in the Steelwood Collegiate Invita-
tional in Loxley, Alabama.
Pichaikool enters MSU’s final event of the fall
as the world’s 51st-ranked amateur golfer.
“I tell him often he’s probably the best player
in every field we go to,” Smith said.
Pichaikool’s MSU record suggests as much.
This fall, Pichaikool has outplayed 130 golfers
and been beaten by seven. He notched the third
runner-up finish in the Louisville Cardinals Chal-
lenge and finished in the top 10 in the Carmel
Cup, which featured a field with eight teams that
made the NCAA tournament last year.
For his career, Pichaikool is on pace to break
the school record for career scoring average. His
scoring average from his freshman year (71.15) is
second in school history. His sophomore season
(71.75) ranks fourth. This season, he has three
rounds of 65 or better. Only Chad Ramey has
accomplished that feat at MSU. Pichaikool could
play as many as nine or 10 events this season.
Despite his gaudy statistics, Pichaikool still
hasn’t won a tournament as a Bulldog, but every-
one around him believes that day is coming.
When Smith took over the program before last
season, he instituted a focus based on trusting
a winning process will produce winning results.
Few embody that better than Pichaikool.
“I get to see the lifestyle he lives. It’s a
championship lifestyle,” said Johnson, who is
Pichaikool’s roommate. “He’s conscious about
what he eats. He works out 24/7, takes care of
his body. That’s what you have to do to be great
at this game.”
For Johnson, that means eating a lot of rice
and noodles, staples of Pichaikool’s native Thai-
land, but Johnson doesn’t complain because

because his team had a touch-

have put them in a much better
position to make the playoffs.
Kelly said he was most disap-
pointed that the game was “tak-
en away from them by people
that have no accountability.” Still,
at the end of the day, he said his
team had chances to make plays
and that the Confederates have
to learn how to do it. He said
that is on him and his assistant
coaches to help the players learn
how to do it.
“I am proud of our kids,” Kelly
said. “They did what they had
to do to win the football game.
There were some unforeseen
circumstances. The ball bounced
in the wrong direction. We got a

changed the outcome of the game,
but we have to win to keep playing.
