An oil container symbol system has been developed to help you

choose the proper oil. The top portion of the symbol shows
the oil quality, such as API Service CI-4 (Figure below). The
symbol may show additional categories, such as API Service
CG-4/SH. The center portion will show viscosity grade, such
as SAE 15W-40. The lower portion may show statements
such as "Energy Conserving II" or other additional oil testing
specifications that the oil has passed.

NOTES:
1. CI-4 is the recommended engine oil and is compatible
with older vehicles. Use CH-4 oil only when CI-4 is
unavailable.
2. Some increase in oil consumption may be expected
when SAE 30W, 5W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30, 10W and
10W-30 oils are used. Check oil level more frequently.
3. Do not use the low viscosity oils (SAE 0W-30, 10W and
5W-30) when the temperature is consistently above +50
deg. F (+10 deg. C), as higher engine wear and engine
damage may occur.
4. SAE 5W-20 oil is not recommended for continuous high
speed operation.

530/530E DIESEL ENGINES

Use engine oils meeting API categories CI-4, CH-4, CI-4/SL.

Submersion
In the event the axle assembly should become
submerged in water over the housing vent, it is
recommended that the lubricant be checked for
contamination. If water is detected, wheel bearings, hub
cavities, and internal components must be inspected.

After Overhaul Or Change Intervals

Fill the axle assembly with specified lubricant to the
proper operating level. Following an overhaul, the
lubricant level must be checked and refilled after 24
hours of operation. This procedure is necessary to
replenish the small amount of lubricant that’s retained
in the internal cavities and wheel ends during initial
Figure 87 operation of the axle assembly.

level, be sure that the parking brake and/or
emergency brakes are set and properly
engaged, and the wheels are chocked.
Unexpected and possibly sudden vehicle
movement may occur if these precautions are
not taken.

Oil Check Procedure (see the Figure below)

Always clean around the end of the fill tube before

removing the dipstick. Dirt or foreign matter must not be
permitted to enter the oil system. It can cause valves to
stick, cause undue wear of transmission parts, or clog
passages.

* All oil level checks must be performed with the engine at idle, transmission in neutral. A hot check
must be performed with operating temperatures stabilized between 160-200 deg. F. Some dipsticks
provide a cold range indicator mark to assure that the oil level is sufficient to operate the vehicle
to perform a HOT CHECK. Refer to L. for additional information. Also refer to separate Allison
Transmission Operator’s Manual for additional information.
