Dead weight stresses is significant for tall columns. The stress will be tensile (positive) for points
below the column support and compressive (negative) for points above the support. Dead weight
stresses are given by:
𝑊
σw = 𝛱 (𝐷𝑖 + 𝑡) 𝑡
96 884 N
σw = 𝛱 (1050 𝑚𝑚+ 14 𝑚𝑚) 14 𝑚𝑚
The bending stress will be compressive or tensile, depending on location and are given by:
𝑀𝑥 𝐷
σb = ± ( 2𝑖 + 𝑡)
𝐼𝑣
Where,
Do = Di + 2t
= 1050 + 2(14)
= 1078 mm
𝑀𝑥 𝐷
σb = ± ( 2𝑖 + 𝑡)
𝐼𝑣
= ± 27.224 N/mm2
3.8.4 The Resultant Longitudinal stress
σz σ L + σ w ± σ b
For upwind,
σz σ L + σ w + σb
= (10.313-2.07+27.224) N/mm2
= 35.467 N/mm2
For downwind,
σz σ L + σ w - σb
= (10.313-2.07-27.224) N/mm2
= - 18.981 N/mm2
As there is no torsional shear stress, the principal stresses will be σz and σh.
The radial stress is negligible.
0.55 𝑁/𝑚𝑚2
(Pi/2) = 2
= 0.275 N/mm2
35.467 N/mm2 18.981 N/mm2
Up-wind Down-wind
Therefore, the greatest difference between the principles stresses, will be on the down-wind side:
σz σh – σz (downwind)
= [20.625 - (-18.981)] N/mm2
= 39.606 N/mm2
The value obtained is below the maximum allowable design stress which is 88.9 N/mm2
𝑡
σc = 2 x 104 (𝐷 )

14 𝑚𝑚
= (2 x 104) N/mm2 (1078 𝑚𝑚)
= 259.74 N/mm2
The maximum compressive stress will occur when the vessel is not under pressure,
= σ𝑤 + σ𝑏
= (2.07+27.224) N/mm2
= 29.294 N/mm2
The result of maximum compressive stress is below the critical buckling stress of 259.74 N/mm2.
Thus, the design is satisfactory.
