1. THE INSTITUTE

The Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing,


Kancheepuram (IIITD&M) was established in 2007 by the Government of India as a
Centre of Excellence in the emerging areas of Design and Manufacturing. The IIITD&M
is presently functioning in the IIT Madras Campus, Chennai and will move to its new
campus at Kelambakkam-Vandalur Road, Chennai. The permanent academic, research
cum residential campus is about 40 km from Chennai’s International Airport.

2. ABOUT M Des PROGRAMMES

The four semester M Des programmes offered in Electronic Systems and Mechanical
Systems are based on the credit system. The curricula of the M Des programmes have
been framed to specialize engineers with domain specific design and manufacturing
skills required for the creation of mechanical and electronic products. In addition to
the common design theory courses, each programme comprises of several core and
elective courses and project work. Each program has a faculty advisor to help the
students in the choice of academic options for elective courses. The detailed
curriculum is available in the institute’s website - www.iiitdm.ac.in.
Financial Assistance is available for selected GATE Qualified Candidates and IIT/IIIT B
Tech Graduates admitted to the M Des Programmes. Seats are reserved for
SC/ST/OBC and PD (Persons with physical Disability) candidates according to the
Government of India rules.

3. M Des ADMISSION
3.1 Categories of Admission
(i) GATE Qualified Candidates
(ii) IIT/IIIT B Tech Candidates
(iii) Sponsored Candidates

3.2 Eligibility and Selection Criteria

The eligible shortlisted candidates with a valid GATE score will be called for the
personal interview and those without a GATE score need to appear for test and
interview.

A. Candidates having valid GATE score

i. Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture from educational


Institutions approved by AICTE/Government or

ii. Candidates yet to appear or have appeared in the final examination for the
qualifying degree specified in [(i) or (ii)] and whose results are likely to be
declared by July 2010, or
iii. Associate Membership holders of the professional bodies for admission into
their parent disciplines from the following:
• The Institution of Engineers (India) (AMIE)
• The Institution of Electronics & Tele-communication Engineering (AMIETE)

B. Eligibility for IIT/IIIT B Tech Candidates

Candidates graduating/graduated from IITs/IIITs with B.Tech degree and


having C.G.P.A. of 7.5 and above for SC/ST and 8.0 and above for others
can apply without GATE Score.

C. Eligibility for Sponsored Candidates

Candidates working and sponsored (with full pay and allowances for 24
months) by industry / government organizations / private and public
enterprises recognized by DST engaged in R & D work/ engineering colleges
recognized by AICTE, possessing at least two years of professional
experience as on the last date of receipt of applications at IIITD&M can
apply, provided they hold:

i. B.E./ B Tech degree from AICTE recognized Engineering Colleges/university


with first class or 60% aggregate marks in all the four years (no need of
having GATE Score) ; or
ii. AMIE and other Associate memberships (listed above) with a valid GATE
Score

4. Programmes offered and availability of seats in each programme.

The M Des programmes offered are

(2) M Des in Mechanical Systems

4.1 Availability of seats in each stream.

Table 1 presents the M Des Programmes offered this semester along with
the number of seats available in stream.

5. Requirement of qualifying degree & GATE in each programme.

Table 2 shows the eligibility for various qualifying disciplines to both the M
Des programmes.

6. Financial assistance for M Des Programmes

Selected GATE Qualified Candidates and IIT/IIIT B Tech Graduates admitted to


M Des programmes are eligible for Financial Assistance.

1. Financial assistance in the form of Half-Time Teaching Assistantship (HTTA)


at the rate of Rs.8,000/- p.m. (tenable for a maximum period of 24
months) will be awarded to Indian nationals doing the M Des Programmes,
subject to Institute rules. HTTA students are required to assist the
department for 8 hours of work per week related to academic activities of
the department such as laboratory demonstration, tutorials, evaluation of
assignments, test papers, seminars, research projects, etc.
2. A few seats are available without HTTA (N-HTTA) in each programme.
Candidates can opt for either HTTA or N-HTTA, or both, in a particular M
Des stream. The eligibility criteria for HTTA and N-HTTA categories are the
same.
3. Provision exists for the candidates who have joined M Des streams under N-
HTTA category to convert to HTTA at the end of one semester depending on
the vacancies in HTTA category and on the basis of their performance in the
first semester examinations.

7.1 Documents to be enclosed along with the Application Form:

a. The completed Application form should accompany a DD for Rs. 150 (Rs.75
for SC/ST/PD/Female Candidates). DD should be in favour of ‘IIITD&M
Kancheepuram’, Payable at Chennai.

b. Copy of the valid GATE score

c. Copy of School Leaving Certificate (S.S.L.C) towards proof of date of birth.

d. Copies of all the Mark sheets / grade cards, degree certificates beginning
from 10TH Standard towards proof of qualification. [Original certificates
should not be enclosed].

e. Copy of the Community Certificate in the case of SC/ST/OBC candidates


issued by the respective State Government. The OBC candidates have to
submit an attested copy of the valid non-creamy layer certificate in the
prescribed form issued by competent authority. The format attached as
Annexure I and II with the application form could be used for this purpose.

f. Sponsorship Certificate from the employer in the prescribed format


attached as Annexure III with the application form in the case of sponsored
candidates.

g. Copy of proof of Experience certificate if any

8. Accommodation

Currently IIITD&M Kancheepuram is functional in the IIT Madras campus. The


students of IIITD&M Kanchepuram are provided accommodation in the IIT
Madras hostels. The hostel rooms are furnished with a cot, a chair, and a
writing table. Students are expected to bring their own bedding. Students
residing in the hostels are provided with exclusive dining facility. This covers
breakfast, lunch, evening coffee/tea and dinner.
