About This Document
Purpose
This document describes how to upgrade a base station to BTS3900 V100R012C10SPC330
and how to roll back the upgrade using the SMT. It also provides FAQs and troubleshooting
methods.
Intended Audience
This document is intended for upgrade personnel. Upgrade personnel must:
 Be familiar with the product networking and related NEs' versions.
 Have device maintenance experience and be familiar with device operation and
maintenance.

1 Before You Start
1.1 Getting Started

 The version BTS3900 V100R012C10SPC330 for multimode base stations corresponds
to the version BTS3000V100R019C10SPC330 for GBTS.
 This document describes how to use the SMT to upgrade BTS software to BTS3900
V100R012C10SPC330.
 The upgrade method for a BTS with the GTMUc as the main control board is the same
as that for a BTS with the GTMU or GTMUb as the main control board. In this
document, the GTMU, GTMUb, and GTMUc are all referred to as GTMU series boards.
 This document uses the DBS3900 GSM as an example to describe the BTS upgrade
procedure. The procedure for upgrading the BTS3900 GSM, BTS3900A GSM,
BTS3900L GSM, and BTS3900AL GSM is the same as that for upgrading the DBS3900
GSM.
 All the screenshots in this document use the upgrade from BTS3900
V100R010C10SPC255 to BTS3900 V100R012C10SPCXXX as an example.
1.2 Version Requirements

1.2.1 Requirements for Base Station Software Version
Table 1-1 describes the version requirements for the upgrade of a GSM base station upgrade.

For an upgrade to an intermediate version, see the
corresponding upgrade guide. If the version of current
upgrade tool (such as BSC LMT, U2000 and so on) is
different from that specified in the corresponding upgrade
guide, GUIs differ accordingly.
BTS3900 V100R010C00 and Can be directly upgraded to BTS3900

later versions V100R012C10SPC330.
1.2.2 Version Requirements for SMT

The SMT must use the latest software version released with the BTS3900
V100R012C10SPC330_GBTS(Tools).zip package of the tools.
1.3 Impact on the System During the Upgrade

Impact on Services
During GTMU software activation, BTS services are interrupted for three minutes.
Impact on Network Communication

During GTMU software activation, the communication between the BTS and the BSC is
interrupted for two minutes.
Impact on Operation and Maintenance

After the upgrade, the password for logging in to the SMT may change depending on the BTS
versions before and after the upgrade. For details, see 6.1 How Does the Password for
Logging In to the SMT Change Before and After an Upgrade or Rollback?
1.4 Mode-by-Mode Upgrade of a Multimode Base Station

This section provides details about upgrading one mode of a multimode base station. You can
ignore this section if the base station to be upgraded is a GSM single-mode base station.
The mode-by-mode upgrade of a multimode base station follows the same operations as a
single-mode upgrade except for the two items listed in this section.
1.4.1 Impact on Peer Services

Upgrading the GSM mode of a multimode base station interrupts services on the peer end for
3 to 5 minutes.

1.4.2 Loading Control Rights

The USCU and the RF modules shared by all modes of a multimode base station will be
upgraded with the mode that has loading control rights. Loading control rights must be set in
either of the following situations:
 Mode-by-mode upgrade is performed on a multimode base station.
 ALM-26277 Inter-System Control Rights Conflict is generated.
For details about which mode has loading control rights, see Appendix 1 Version Mapping
Information. You can obtain this appendix from the directory Release Notes\Multimode Base
Station Release Notes\Release Notes (Word_Excel) in the document package delivered with
the software version of the multimode base station. For detailed operations, see 6.4 How Do I
Set the Load Control Rights for a Multimode Base Station?
1.5 Workarounds and Precautions

Read the following precautions before the upgrade:
 Services will be interrupted during the upgrade. Therefore, you are advised to upgrade
the BTS software during off-peak hours.
 Ensure that transmission is normal during the upgrade. If the transmission of a base
station is disconnected during the upgrade, the base station is restored to the original
version after being restarted. When this happens, perform the upgrade again.
 This document uses the GTMU, GRRU, UBRI, and EMU as examples to describe how
to upgrade BTS boards. The processes for upgrading the DRRU, DRFU, MRRU, GRFU,
MRFU and, AIRU are the same as the process for upgrading the GRRU. The processes
for upgrading the USCU, UTRP, UCIU and UBBP are the same as the process for
upgrading the UBRI. The processes for upgrading other boards are the same as the
process for upgrading the EMU. For details about the categories of BTS boards, see 6.2
What Are the Categories of BTS Boards?
 Before a new BTS correctly communicates with the BSC, the BTS maintenance port is
enabled by default. When the BTS correctly communicates with the BSC and is
upgraded using the SMT, run the DSP BTSLOCALETHPORT command to query the
value of Port Configuration Status in the command output. If the value is Disable, run
the SET BTSLOCALETHPORT command with Maintenance Port Switch set to
ENABLE(Enable).
 Before upgrading the base station, check whether the BootROM software of the TRX
board needs to be upgraded based on the risk check result. If yes, upgrade it by
performing steps provided in "(Optional) Upgrade the BootROM" in BTS3900
V100R012C10SPC330 (GBTS) Upgrade Guide (BSC LMT-Based) or "How DO I
Upgrade the Base Station BootROM?" in BTS3900&BTS5900&USU

2 Preparing for the Upgrade
2.1 Obtaining Upgrade and Verification Tools

Before performing the upgrade, obtain the following tools:
 Two MSs with installed SIM cards for dialing tests
 One Ethernet cable
 Portable computer supporting SMT
 Personal computer supporting BSC LMT
2.2 Obtaining Upgrade Reference Documents and

Upgrade Software
Step 1 Use either of the following methods to log in to Huawei support website and find the upgrade
reference documents and software packages:
 Method 1
Click the hyperlink BTS3900, log in to Huawei support website using a Huawei
engineer's account, and click the target version.
If the GUI language is not the target language, select the target language on the top of the page.
 Method 2
Log in to http://support.huawei.com using a Huawei engineer's account, enter
"BTS3900" in the Search text box of the Software tab page, and click the result that is
automatically displayed. Then, click the target version in the displayed interface.
Step 2 Download the upgrade software package and reference document from the version release
path.

software package to save the downloading time.

Step 3 Create a folder named FTP in directory D on the local PC.
This document assumes that the decompressed files are saved in D:\FTP.
Step 4 Obtain upgrade software.

1. Decompress the BTS3900 V100R012C10SPC330_GBTS(Software).zip package to the
D:\FTP folder and generate a GBTS folder.
2. In the GBTS folder, decompress Download.zip to D:\BTS3900V100R012C10SP330 to
obtain the board software required for the upgrade. For details about the mapping
between BTS boards and board software, see 6.2 What Are the Categories of BTS
Boards?
After Download.zip is decompressed, do not delete or move any file in the software package to retain
the integrity of the software package and avoid software loading failure.
Step 5 Prepare the SMT upgrade tool.

1. Decompress the BTS3900 V100R012C10SPC330_GBTS(Tools).zip package to obtain
the following files:
− BTS3900ROMV100R012C10SP330.zip
− BTS3900V100R012C10SP330.csp
− BTSM.zip
− BTS3900EmergencyOMCHV100R012C10SP330.zip
2. Decompress the BTSM.zip to obtain the SMT tool required for the upgrade.

2.3 Disabling Automatic Loading and Activation

If the BTS is not connected to the BSC, skip this section. If the BTS is connected to the BSC,
disable automatic loading and activation for the BTS software on the BSC LMT or U2000
before the upgrade. This ensures that the configuration check between the BTS and the BSC
due to GTMU reset does not affect the BTS upgrade.
Run the SET BTSAUTODLDACTINFO command to turn off the automatic loading and
activation switch with Auto Download Active Function Switch set to OFF(OFF).
You can disable automatic loading and activation for multiple BTSs by running the following commands
in batches:
SET BTSAUTODLDACTINFO: IDTYPE=BYID, BTSID=18, ADLDACT=OFF;

2.4 Connecting the SMT PC to the BTS

To connect the SMT PC to the BTS, performing the following steps:
Step 1 Use an Ethernet cable to connect the respective Ethernet ports on the SMT PC and the
GTMU.
Step 2 Set the IP address of the PC running the SMT to be on the same network segment with the
BTS IP address.
The default BTS IP address is 192.168.0.72 (subnet mask: 255.255.255.0). It cannot be used
as the IP address of the PC running the SMT.
For details about how to set the IP address of the PC running the SMT, see the online help of the
Windows operating system.
Step 3 Start the SMT.

In the displayed System Login window, select Network Port in the Select Communication
Port area, specify User Name and Password, and enter 192.168.0.72 in the BTS IP Address
area. Then, click OK, as shown in Figure 2-1.

 If the message "The trust certificate has expired" is displayed in the lower left corner of the dialog
box, and the GTMUc is connected through the SMT, click Update Digital Certificate. In the
displayed Update Digital Certificate dialog box, choose the trust certificate and certificate
revocation list to be updated and click Update. You can download the trust certificate Wireless
Network Product CA Chain.pem and certificate revocation list WNCA_crl.crl from Huawei
Wireless Network Product CA Certificates and CRL.
 When the SMT fails to be connected to the BTS, check whether the IP address of the PC running the
SMT configured and the IP address entered into the BTS IP Address area are correct. If they are
correct and the BTS is properly connected to the BSC, run the DSP BTSLOCALETHPORT
command to query the value of Port Configuration Status in the command output. If the value is
Disable, run the SET BTSLOCALETHPORT command with Maintenance Port Switch set to
ENABLE(Enable).
 The default user name and password for logging in to the SMT are admin and hwbs@com,
respectively.
 Users can log in to the BSC LMT and run the SET BTSUSERPWD command to change the
password, with Username and Password Type set to USER_SELF_DEFINE, Username set to
admin (each letter of the admin can be capitalized), and Encrypted Mode set to ENCRYPTED.

2.5 Querying the GBTS Version

Query the software version of BTS boards to be upgraded and record the information for
version backup or verification.
Step 1 Start the SMT, and click Board in the navigation tree. Then, double-click Board
Management in the Function area in the right pane, as shown in Figure 2-2.

Step 2 Query and record the GTMU software version.

1. In the displayed Board Management dialog box, right-click GTMU and choose Board
Information from the shortcut menu.
The Board Information dialog box is displayed.
If the Board Management dialog box does not display any boards, click Refresh in the lower part of
the dialog box.
2. Record the software version, as shown in Figure 2-3.

3. Click OK.
Step 3 Query and record the TRX software version.
1. In the Board Management dialog box, double-click GTMU.
The Topology Management dialog box is displayed.
If the TRX board is connected to the UBRI or UBBP, double-click the UBRI or UBBP. The Topology
Management dialog box is displayed.
2. In the Topology Management dialog box, right-click the TRX board to be queried (for
example, GRRU) and choose Board Information from the shortcut menu.
If the Board Management dialog box does not display any boards, click Refresh in the lower part of
the dialog box.

4. Click OK.
Step 4 Query and record the software versions of monitoring boards.
1. In the Board Management dialog box, right-click EMU and choose Board
Information from the shortcut menu.

4. In the Board Management dialog box, click Close.

2.6 Backing Up the BTS Software

Back up the running software version of the BTS for version rollback in the event of an
upgrade failure.
 It is recommended that you use the U2000 to back up the BTS software. For details, see
6.5 How Do I Back Up the BTS Software Using the U2000?
 If the software backup fails, go to Huawei support website to download the running
software version of the BTS and save it to the portable.
2.7 Backing Up Network KPIs

Save the latest KPI report before the upgrade. For details about the KPIs to be checked, see
4.4 Verifying Network KPIs.
For details about how to save KPI reports on the U2000, see U2000 online help by performing the
following steps:

 On the U2000, press F1. The U2000 Online Help window is displayed.
 Choose Performance Management > Performance Measurement Management > Performance
Management During Routine Maintenance > Exporting NE Performance Measurement
Results. Then, save the NE performance measurement results.
Before upgrading one mode of a multimode base station, check the status of the peer mode by
following the instructions in the upgrade verification description in the corresponding upgrade
guide. If the working status of the peer mode is abnormal, rectify the faulty before performing
the upgrade.
2.8 Verifying BTS Alarms

To compare pre-upgrade alarms and post-upgrade alarms, check and back up BTS alarms as
follows:
Step 1 Start the SMT and view the alarms in the lower part of the window, as shown in Figure 2-6.

Step 2 Right-click in the displayed alarm list and choose Save Message from the shortcut menu to
save the alarm information.

3 Performing the Upgrade
This chapter uses GTMU, GRRU, and UBRI as examples to describe the BTS upgrade
procedure on the SMT.
Table 3-1 lists the operations and durations of the BTS upgrade on the SMT.

 You can load the GTMU software only after the software of the TRX boards and boards in
the BBU subrack is loaded. You can activate the GTMU software only after the software
of the TRX boards and boards in the BBU subrack is activated. There is no restriction on
the sequence of loading or activating software for the TRX boards or the boards in the
BBU subrack.
 All configured BTS boards (except for monitoring boards) must be upgraded during a BTS
upgrade. You can determine whether to upgrade monitoring boards according to the
precautions released by Huawei. If you need to upgrade monitoring boards after upgrading
the non-monitoring boards, see 6.3 How Do I Upgrade Monitoring Boards?
3.1 Obtaining the Site Management Rights

To obtain the site management rights, perform the following steps:
Step 1 On the left of the SMT, click Site255. Then, double-click Site Management Right in the
Function area on the right.
The Site Management Right dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 In the Site Management Right dialog box, click Get.
A message is displayed.
Step 3 Click OK.
Step 4 After obtaining the site management rights, click Close.
 When the BTS is connected to the BSC and you have obtained the site management rights,
to avoid BTS resets do not run configuration commands.
 Do not reset boards during software loading and activation.

3.2 Loading the UBRI Software
Skip this section if the BTS is not configured with the UBRI.
To load the UBRI software, perform the following steps:

Step 1 On the left of the SMT, click Site255, and double-click Forced Software Load in the
Function area in the right pane, as shown in Figure 3-1.

Step 2 In the Software Download dialog box, set parameters as follows, as shown in Figure 3-2:
1. In the File Name area, click Browse and select the ubridown.pck file under the
directory (described in 2.2 Obtaining Upgrade Reference Documents and Upgrade
Software) where the upgrade software package is saved.
2. In the Version area, enter BTS3900V100R012C10SP330 in the first text box.
3. Select UBRI_MAIN from the File ID drop-down list.

 The .pck file selected in the File Name area must be the .pck file of the board to be loaded.
 The board type selected in the File ID area determines the board file to be loaded. Therefore, setting
File ID to an improper value may lead to failure in downloading or activating board software.
Step 3 Click Start.

The software download starts.

Step 4 When the download progress reaches 100% and the "Downloading software successfully"
message is displayed, click Close.
If the BTS software downloading fails, perform operations according to 6.6 How Do I Handle a BTS
Software Download Failure?

3.3 Loading the TRX Software

To load the TRX software, perform the following steps:
Function area in the right pane.
The Software Download dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 In the Software Download dialog box, set parameters as follows:
1. In the File Name area, click Browse and select the mrrudown.pck file under the
3. Select GRRU_MAIN from the File ID drop-down list.
 If File ID is set to GRRU_MAIN, MRRU_MAIN or AIRU_MAIN, select

mrrudown.pck from the File Name area.
 If File ID is set to GRFU_MAIN or MRFU_MAIN, select mrfudown.pck from the File
Name area.
 For the mapping between File Name and board software, see 6.2 What Are the Categories
of BTS Boards?
Step 3 Click Start.

3.4 Loading the GTMU Software

To load the GTMU software, perform the following steps:
The Software Download window is displayed.

 Wait four minutes for the services to recover. During the reset period, the SMT is
temporarily disconnected with the BTS. After the SMT is reconnected to the BTS, if the
target software version of the GTMU can be queried on the SMT, the GTMU software is
successfully activated. For information about how to query software versions on the SMT,
see 2.5 Querying the GBTS Version.
 After the software is successfully activated and the BTS is reset, do not disconnect the
network cable between the SMT and BTS and do not disable the SMT before the SMT is
successfully connected to the BTS. Otherwise, the BTS automatically rolls back to the
source version.
 After the upgrade, the password for logging in to the SMT may change depending on the
BTS versions before and after the upgrade. For details, see 6.1 How Does the Password for
Logging In to the SMT Change Before and After an Upgrade or Rollback?

3.8 Enabling Automatic Loading and Activation

Skip this section if the BTS is not connected to the BSC.
Before enabling automatic loading and activation, ensure that the BTS3900
V100R012C10SP330 software package has been downloaded to the BSC. Otherwise, the
BSC may reset the BTS during version verification after automatic loading and activation is
enabled. For information about how to download the BTS software package to the BSC, see
6.10 How Do I Download the BTS Upgrade Software Package to the BSC?
To enable automatic loading and activation, perform the following steps:

Step 1 Run the SET BTSAUTODLDACTINFO command. Set parameters for the BTS to be
upgraded.
1. Select ON(ON) from the Auto Download Active Function Switch drop-down list.
2. Select BTSAUTODLDACT(BTSAUTODLDACT) from the Work Mode for Auto
Download Activation drop-down list.
3. Enter BTS3900V100R012C10SP330 in the BTS Software Version 1 text box.
4. Set Auto Download Mode based on your individual needs.
The values for Auto Download Mode include Common Download, Quick Download No Traffic and
Quick Download Reserve BCCH. In IP transmission mode, services are properly provided during the
loading process in these values for Auto Download Mode. In TDM transmission mode, these values for
Auto Download Mode differ as follows:
 COMMON_DLD (Common Download): If BTS Multiplexing Mode or BCCH TRX RSL
Multiplexing Mode is set to MODE2_1, MODE3_1, MODE4_1, MODE5_1, or MODE6_1, you
are advised to load software during off-peak hours. Otherwise, services may be affected.
 QUICK_DLD1 (Quick Download No Traffic): Software loading interrupts services on all TRXs.

 QUICK_DLD2 (Quick Download Reserve BCCH): Software loading interrupts services only on
non-BCCH TRXs.
Step 2 Check the returned message to confirm that automatic loading and activation was enabled.
You can enable automatic loading and activation for multiple BTSs in batches by running the following

4 Verifying the Upgrade
After the upgrade, follow the instructions in this chapter to verify the upgrade.
4.1 Verifying the GBTS Version

After the upgrade, verify that the software version of the upgraded boards (excluding
monitoring boards) is V100R012C10SP330. For details, see 2.5 Querying the GBTS Version.
After monitoring boards (PMU, EMU, FMU, TCU, GATM, FAN ,BDU,MEB,CCU and so
on) are upgraded, the board software versions may be inconsistent with the BTS software
version.
4.2 Verifying BTS Alarms

After the upgrade, check for alarms by referring to 2.8 Verifying BTS Alarms, and compare
the alarms with those reported before the upgrade. If new alarms are reported, troubleshoot
the alarms by referring to the BSC GSM Alarm Reference.
Click Help in the upper right corner of the LMT interface.

The BSC6900 LMT Online Help System window or BSC6910 LMT Online Help System window is
displayed. Clear the alarms by referring to the BSC6900 GSM Alarm Reference or BSC6910 GSM Alarm
Reference in the window.
4.3 Verifying Services

Verify services based on A.2 Verification Record of GBTS Services to ensure that the upgrade
does not affect the system.

4.4 Verifying Network KPIs

The criteria for a successful upgrade under normal conditions are as follows:

the week before the upgrade.

5 Rolling Back to the Source Version
You must perform the rollback on the SMT released with BTS3900 V100R012C10SPC330.
 If the upgrade fails or the network performance seriously deteriorates after the upgrade,
the version requires a rollback. The manual rollback depends on the actual situations of the
network and customer requirements.
 For a multimode base station, if any mode in a multimode base station needs to be rolled
back, roll back all the modes to the source versions.
 During the rollback, do not reset the base station or any board, power off the base station,
or remove any board. Doing so will cause the rollback to fail.
 If the network was adjusted after the base station upgrade, contact Huawei technical
support when rolling back the base station software version.
5.1 Rollback Process

The operations for a common rollback are similar to those for an upgrade. The difference is
that the target version for a rollback is the version before the upgrade.
After the rollback, the password for logging in to the SMT may change depending on the BTS
versions before and after the upgrade as well as the password change status. For details, see
6.1 How Does the Password for Logging In to the SMT Change Before and After an Upgrade
or Rollback?

6.3 How Do I Upgrade Monitoring Boards?

You cannot upgrade the FAN using the SMT.
6.3.1 Loading Software for the Monitoring Board

Step 1 Obtain the site management rights. For information about how to obtain the site management
rights, see 3.1 Obtaining the Site Management Rights.

 The operations for upgrading other monitoring boards are similar to those for upgrading the EMU.
 For information about how to specify File Name, see Table 6-4
 Specify File ID based on the actual board type. The board type selected in the File ID area
determines the board file to be loaded. Therefore, setting File ID to an improper value will lead to
failure in downloading board software.
Step 4 Click Start.

6.4 How Do I Set the Load Control Rights for a Multimode

Base Station?
Step 1 On the SMT, click Site255 in the left pane, and double-click Software Control in the

6.5 How Do I Back Up the BTS Software Using the U2000?

Step 1 Log in to the U2000 client and display the Software Browser window.
 Application style: Click . On the displayed Application Center tab page, double-
click Software Management, choose NE File > Software Browser.
 Traditional style: Choose Software > Software Browser.
Step 2 On the Software Browser tab page, click the OSS Server tab, and select GBTS in the
navigation tree, as shown in Figure 6-2.
Step 3 On the Software tab page, select the software version to be backed up from the Version
column, as shown in Figure 6-2.
If the BTS software version to be backed up is not displayed in the Version column, log in to Huawei
support website to download the required software to your portable.

Step 4 Click Transfer, and choose From OSS Server to OSS Client from the drop-down list.
Step 5 In the displayed NE File Transfer dialog box, select a directory on the portable to which the
software is backed up. Then, click OK.
The system starts to download the software to be backed up from the U2000 to the portable.
On the FTP Task tab page, the download progress is displayed. When the progress reaches
100%, the backup of the BTS software is successfully downloaded to the portable.

6.6 How Do I Handle a BTS Software Download Failure?

If the BTS software downloading fails, check the failure cause displayed on the lower left side
and perform relevant operations according to the solutions described in Table 6-5.

To release the site management rights manually, perform the following steps:

SRAN10.0 and later Versions.7z package to a local disk, for example, D:\, and generate a
GBTS folder.
Step 3 In the GBTS folder, decompress Download.zip to D:\BTS3900V100R012C10SP330 to
obtain the board software required for the upgrade. For details about the mapping between
BTS boards and board software, see 6.2 What Are the Categories of BTS Boards?
After Download.zip is decompressed, do not delete or move any file in the software package to retain
the integrity of the software package and avoid software loading failure.

 For details on preparing the BTS upgrade software package after

SMT tool package BTS3900 V100R012C10SPC330_GBTS(Tools).zip

Step 3 Create a folder named FTP in directory D on the local PC.

Step 4 Obtain upgrade software.

Step 5 Prepare the SMT upgrade tool.
