Tutorial #1
1 (a) Derive the solution of 𝑚𝑥̈ + 𝑘𝑥 = 0 and plot the result for at least two periods for
the case with ωn = 2 rad/s, x0 = 1 mm, and 𝑣0 = √5 mm/s.
1 (b) Solve 𝑚𝑥̈ + 𝑘𝑥 = 0 for k = 4 N/m, m = 1 kg, x0 = 1 mm, and 𝑣0 = 0. Plot the
solution.
2. Find the equation of motion for the hanging spring-mass system of Figure Q2, and
compute the natural frequency. In particular, using static equilibrium along with
Newton’s law, determine what effect gravity has on the equation of motion and
the system’s natural frequency.
Figure Q2
3 (c) Using the solution of equation (1.2) in the form 𝑥(𝑡) = 𝐵 sin 𝜔𝑛 𝑡 + 𝐶 cos 𝜔𝑛 𝑡
calculate the values of B and C in terms of the initial conditions x0 and v0.

9. A spring-mass-damper system has mass of 100 kg, stiffness of 3000 N/m and
damping coefficient of 300 kg/s. Calculate the undamped natural frequency, the
damping ratio and the damped natural frequency. Does the solution oscillate?

10. Derive the equation of motion of the system in Figure Q10 and discuss the effect
of gravity on the natural frequency and the damping ratio.
Figure Q10
11. Calculate the natural frequency and damping ratio for the system in Figure Q11
given the values m = 10 kg, c = 1 kg/s, k1 = 10 kN/m, k2 = 1 kN/m, k3 = 4 kN/m, k4
= 2 kN/m and k5 = 3 kN/m. Assume that no friction acts on the rollers. Is the
system overdamped, critically damped or underdamped?

12. Consider the diving board of Figure Q12. For divers, a certain level of static
deflection is desirable, denoted by Δ. Compute a design formula for the
dimensions of the board (b, h and l ) in terms of the static deflection, the average
diver’s mass, m, and the modulus of the board.
