Pinggang Pinoy now covers specific population groups

Iloilo City - The famous healthy food plate model known as the Pinggang Pinoy is now
available in various population groups – kids, teens, adults, pregnant and lactating mothers,
and elderly.

This statement was made by Science Research Specialist II Salvador Serrano during the
conduct of the Nutrition Communication Network (NUTRICOMNET) Media Forum.

The Pinggang Pinoy for Adults, which was


first developed in collaboration with
Department of Science and Technology –
Food Nutrition and Research Institute (DOST-
FNRI), World Health Organization (WHO),
Department of Health (DOH) and National
Nutrition Council, was launched in July 2014.
Recognizing the need to address energy and
nutrient requirements on various age groups,
DOST-FNRI spearheaded the development of
the Pinggang Pinoy for all ages.

Initiated through sound scientific basis, Pinggang Pinoy serves as a reminder on how to fill
up one’s plate with the right amount, proportion and quality of food. It is divided into go, grow
and glow foods.

Go food, or energy giving food, are whole grains which comprise more fiber and nutrients
than refined grains and are linked to lower risk of heart disease, diabetes and other health
problems.

Grow food, or body building food, consist of fish, shell fish, lean meat, poultry, eggs, and
dried beans and nuts needed for the growth, maintenance and repair of body tissues.

Glow food, or body regulating food, include a wide variety of fruits and vegetables which are
packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber needed for the regulation of body processes.

Serrano likewise advised that those with specific health conditions should consult registered
nutritionist-dietician or any health care provider regarding their energy and nutrient needs.
