There is always a pivotal moment at the end of summer where I get very excited for Fall.
Summer and Fall are my favorite seasons but deciding which one is my favorite is a tuff
decision. Last week, when we had two nice days in a row, I got a touch of Fall and ever since I

Teacher: Emily Van Allen Class: 2018 1st grade class Date: 9/20 – 9/21
Standard: LS1-1-1. How plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive,
Objective: Students will learn Parts of a Plant and how those parts help them survive.
Materials: Leaf, Roots, Stem, Flower Worksheets, Parts of a Plant Worksheet, Pencils, Markers,
Vocabulary:
Root: Keeps the plants in the soil. They suck up the water and minerals in the soil to
Leaf: Breathe in the air and soak up the light that all plants need to survive.
Lesson: In this activity the students will be learning about the parts of a plant. They will learn
the basic structure of all plants (roots, stems, leaves, and some plants have flowers) and what
they do. They will learn about how there are flowering plants and nonflowering plants. We will
discuss what plants need to survive. The next day we will go outside to look at all the plants in
nature. After our walk, students will create their own 3D plant of their choice. This will include

the 4 parts of a plant (roots, stem, leaves, and a flower). Students will label each part of their
Student Understanding: By the end of this lesson student should have a full understanding of
each part of a plant and what it does. They should also know what a plant needs to survive.
