Artifact Dig ( Technology )

Irrigation, a wheel, boats, and computers are all examples of technology that has helped

shape the United States of America into the country it is today. Technology is the backbone of

any growing society and is needed in order to nudge a civilization into a strong unit. I chose

technology as my theme because whether it was Great Britain in the industrial age or Thomas

Edison with the light bulb; technology has always made civilizations more efficient. This

efficiency allows for many civilization to grow at a more rapid rate and reign over societies who

have not adapted as quickly. Technology does not stop there, it can also give a keen insight as to

how intellectually inclined a society was, and where their main focus lied.

This artifact is very unique and ahead of its time. The skilled artist who made this used multiple

pieces, that were then soldered together with high temperatures in order to construct this vessel.

This vessel was constructed in 400 BCE and shows the intelligence of the craftsmen at the time

and how advanced their technology was. ( virtual dig )

This spear shaft terminal is a strong advancement in weaponry for not only the time period it was

used in,900 BCE, but its design. Though varied, this design is used today. This artifact was used

by warriors to increased their accuracy and become more efficient on the battlefield. (Virtual

This is a spindle whorl. A spindle whorl aided craftsmen in created fabric at a much more

efficient rate. This technology was introduced between 2900 and 2600 BCE, and like the cotton

gin and the production line allowed for laborers to produce more items in less time. ( virtual dig )

A receipt today can be for a large or small purchase. This receipt in 2041 BCE was for the

purchase of multiple oxen. This technology is still prevalent today because receipts are a hard

copy of ownership of a particular item, while helping solve judiciary disputes regarding property

ownership. ( virtual dig )

This is another artifact that, back in the day, was used as weaponry. This mace head was used in

2700-2600 BCE and when attached to a pole and rope was a crucial blunt weapon that played a

key role in conquering land. This technology allowed for soldiers to use less energy with greater

results on the battlefield. ( virtual dig )

This is an axe head and was similar to the swiss army knife at the time. This axe head was

constructed and used in the years 2350-2150 BCE as not only a tool, but a weapon as well; this

was a useful technology that served multiple purposes for those maybe holding two positions in a

community. ( virtual dig )

Technology will always be needed to push societies further and further in discoveries.

The discoveries founded far back in history, though modified, were the foundation of technology

currently used today. With civilization making new technology, that same civilization will be

able to out do its predecessors and prosper into a more fluent and elite society. I believe societies

need technological inventions to not only prosper but they need technology in order to sustain

large populations as well.
