Using the Correct Specifications as Specified in the Operating System

What is an Operating System? It is a program installed to a computer system which runs or manages all
of the hardware and software or programs in the computer. Operating Systems (OS) vary from
computer to computer. When setting-up a computer system, one of the things to consider is the correct
specification for the Operating System that you want to use. An Operating System requires as little as
192 kilobytes of RAM from many years ago, to as much as 2 gigabytes of RAM for the more recent
ones.

Most of the time, Operating Systems are already preloaded to computers that are for sale. Other times,
you have to buy it separately and install it. Those who want a different OS for the computer they buy
need not worry though, as the preloaded or preinstalled kind can still be changed or upgraded as long
as the minimum system requirements are met.

Operating Systems have a minimum requirement of hardware to function and the manufacturer’s
recommended requirement. Most of the time, a user will just fulfill the minimum requirements needed
for the operating system to work. But if one wants to optimize the use of the Operating System, the
hardware should meet the recommended parts / specifications of the manufacturer. When the minimum
or recommended requirements of the OS are not met, the OS will not function properly and may even
cause the system to run slow or have errors; or even not work at all, since the OS will not be accepted
by the system if the minimum requirements are not met.

The following are the basic hardware that should be considered for the Operating System requirements:

 Processor - circuitry that processes and responds to the basic instructions that drive a computer
 Memory – Random Access Memory or RAM
 Hard disk drive – storage device for data

Other hardware that may be considered when choosing an Operating System:

 CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive

 sound card
 video adapter
 Below are examples of qualifications / minimum requirements as specified by the Operating
System:
 a) processor: 1 gigahertz
 RAM: 1 gigabyte
 hard disk drive space: 16 gigabyte
 b) processor: i486/25 megahertz
 RAM: 4 megabytes
 hard disk drive space: 35 megabytes
 c) processor: 133 megahertz or more
 RAM: 256 megabytes
 hard disk drive space: 650 megabytes
 d) processor: 233 megahertz or more
 RAM: 64 megabytes
 hard disk drive space: 1.5 gigabytes
 e) processor: 486DX 66 megahertz
 RAM: 16 megabytes
 hard disk drive space: 195 megabytes
 The more advanced or the more capabilities you want your computer to have, the higher the
specifications and OS should be.

Performing Calculations Needed in Completing Tasks Using the Four Mathematical Fundamental
Operations

The numbering system that has been developed for general usage is the base 10 system, probably
because early man learned to count with his ten fingers. We utilize this system in our daily
mathematics. The metric system and most monetary systems are based on this system.

The operation of computers is based upon the principles of semiconductor circuitry, or other materials
that can be easily fabricated, and that have two states: off and on or high and low. These two states can
also be thought of as a “1” or a “0.” The numbering system developed for two state operations is called
the binary system and is the language of the computer.

Binary to Decimal Conversion

Converting from binary (base 2) to decimal (base 10) is called decoding and is quite simple. We convert
the digit in each position to decimal and add the results just as we did in the weighting of decimal
numbers.

Convert 101012 to a decimal number.

2 from right to left. Start at 20, evaluating it as “1.” Increase the exponent by one for each power.

10101 2 = ( 1 x 2 4 ) + ( 0 x 2 3 ) + ( 1 x 2 2 ) + ( 0 x 2 1 ) +
( 1 x 2 0 ) = 16 + 0 + 4 + 0 + 1 = 21 10

Solution: Write the number as the sum of the powers of 2 from right to left. Start at 20, evaluating it as
“1.” Increase the exponent by one for each power.

11001110 2 = ( 1 x 2 7 ) + ( 1 x 2 6 ) + ( 0 x 2 5 ) + ( 0 x 2 4 ) + ( 1 x 2 3 ) +
( 1 x 2 2 ) + ( 1 x 2 1 ) + ( 0 x 2 0 ) = 128 + 64 + 0 + 0 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 0 = 206 10

Convert decimal number 2110 into binary.

What do you think?

Solution: Divide the number into 2 repeatedly and take the remainders.

Calculating Data Storage

The terms bytes (B), kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), and terabytes (TB) are used
when pertaining to storage space. CDs, DVDs, hard drives, random access memory (RAM), and MP3
players usually use byte storage.
It is possible to find out the number of bytes being utilized once we know the file or folder size. The
table of measures above will be very helpful. For example:

A file is 50 KB in size

1 KB = 1024 bytes

50 x 1024 = 51, 200 bytes in a 50 KB file

If a 50 KB file is stored in a 1 GB flash drive (1 gigabyte = 1, 073, 741, 824 bytes), then approximately a
total of 20, 971 files can be stored in that flash drive (1, 073, 741, 824 ÷ 51, 200 = 20971.5)

Different Techniques in Checking Accuracy of the Computation

There are many instances where computations must be carried out when dealing with computer
systems. Some of the most common is the conversion of the different number systems (used in
computer architecture), measuring the total capacity of storage devices (used in technical
specifications), and determining the number of files that can be stored in a medium (used in database
management). In most cases, computations are carried out without any means of determining whether
the results were correct and accurate.

Listed below are some of the common techniques in checking the accuracy of the computations:

1) Conversion of number systems

In order to check whether correct conversion has been made, one must be able to understand first the
conversions bases; these are binary, octal, decimal, and hexadecimal. To check if the computation is
correct, just perform reverse operations. Reversing the operations require pairings, addition will be
turned into subtraction, while multiplication will be turned into division, and vice versa. Converting a
given number into another base will also ensure that the conversion and computation is indeed
accurate.

2) Storage capacity computation

Checking the accuracy in computing the storage capacity of a device requires the knowledge in the
measurement prefixes used in computing. Failure to know this will make it impossible to perform
computations in the first place. There are two methods in checking the accuracy for computing the
storage capacity. The first one is reversing the operations based on the powers of ten, which is an
approximation. The more accurate checking is reversing the operations based on the powers of two,
which will yield a result that accurate to the smallest byte.

3) Files storage computation

Determining the accuracy for this one is rather simple. Once again, reversing the operations is the key.
Just multiply the result with the storage size of a file and add the remaining unallocated space. It is
however important to understand that basic storage hierarchy to determine whether the available space
is bigger that the files size.

Tips
 Checking the accuracy of any computation is important in any field.
 In computer systems, failure to achieve an accurate result from any computation may result to
the failure of the entire computer system.
 Catastrophic effects are even expected for systems that cater a large number of clients and
undertakings.

Determining the Location of the Devices/Systems to be Used

Determining the location in which a device or a computer system will be installed highly influence the
overall aspect in defining its specifications. These include technical specifications and the form factor of
a device or computer system.

The technical specification of a peripheral refers to the technology it may offer like high capacity
storage or high data transfer rate. The form factor on the other hand is defined by the physical
appearance of a peripheral. This concerns the dimensions, looks, or number of attachable devices.

Proper inspection of the prospected location on where a device or computer system will be installed is
key in knowing the correct technical specifications. The location describes the type of work or activities
that is being accomplished there. Examples are the different departments or offices in a certain
workplace. These offices have different functions and activities. The accounting department does
auditing and relies on office productivity software. This means that the computer system needed may
not be required to be too powerful. On the other hand, if the main activity of a department is resource
intensive, like maintaining a server, higher specifications must be taken into consideration.

Aside from knowing the technical specifications, the form factor must also be considered. Choosing the
correct form factor will fully utilize the space available. Different types of computer systems can be
taken into consideration, from a full desktop setup or a super portable laptop. A location that is
considered small may require devices and computer systems with a small form factor. This is to save
space but maintain the same level of productivity.

The location will also determine the type of connectivity that will be imposed. A small area may require
only a basic wireless router to connect everything together. For larger offices, a set of interconnected
wireless routers and network switches with multiple ports may be required. The type of network
topology or how the computer systems will be connected together can also be determined. Physical
topology refers to how the computer systems are physically arranged while the logical topology refers to
how data will flow through the computer systems.

In conclusion, proper inspection of the location in which computer systems and devices will be installed
will help the technicians to determine the best specifications that is fit and precise.

QUIPPER #1
Installing Computer Systems and Networks, ICT - Grade 9
Consulting Appropriate/Technical Personnel to Ensure That Work is Coordinated with
Others Who are Involved in the Activity

Technical projects are often completed with the help of skilled personnel from different departments of
a workplace. The installation of computer systems is one activity that may require appropriate
interactions and coordination across different departments. Proper consultation and coordination will
ensure that a job requirement will be fulfilled correctly and timely.

Different departments are assigned to perform various activities in a company. The Information
Technology (IT) department is the primary concerned for the installation of computer systems and
networks. It is sometimes referred to as information system department or IT infrastructure department.
Aside from the installation of computer systems and networks, the IT department is also assigned for
the maintenance and upgrade of the technological infrastructure of a workplace.

The IT department is usually headed by a manager who oversees supervisors and skilled technicians.
These people are the only ones allowed to install or fix any computer systems since they have the
knowledge to do so. All requests that concern the IT infrastructure must always pass thru the IT
department.

In order to ensure that a job requirement or request will be accomplished appropriately, proper
coordination between the requesting party and the IT department must be observed. Listed below are
some of the steps that must be done to ensure proper coordination:

 All requests must be made clear. The particulars must be stated properly.
 Ample time must be considered when making a request. Timeframes are important so that
cramming will be avoided. However, small requests can be accomplished immediately.
 A request must be approved by the immediate supervisor before submission to the IT
department. Unapproved requests will not be entertained.
 An IT personnel must check whether the request is valid. After checking, the request will now be
approved by the IT manager and will be scheduled based on the availability of the IT personnel
and the timeframe of the department.
 All departments and personnel that will be affected by the completion of the job requirement or
request must be informed properly so that minimal work disruption will be encountered.
 In case materials are needed to be bought, the purchasing or accounting department must be
informed in time so that the completion of the request will not be halted. All procured materials
must be recorded accordingly.
 All completed job requests must be acknowledged by the requesting party and should be filed
by the IT department for proper documentation.

In some cases, there may be job requests that may not be completed by the IT department alone.
These activities may be too broad and may require special procedures. These projects will need to be
outsourced. All projects that are outsourced must be justified by the IT manager and must be approved
by the people in the executive department.

Tips
Proper coordination and consultation among the different personnel and department is key in ensuring
that the job requirement or activity will be accomplished correctly and timely. This will also minimize
work disruption in the duration of the activities. Further damages can also be avoided if proper
coordination is to be made accordingly.

QUIPPER #3
Installing Computer Systems and Networks, ICT - Grade 9
Obtaining Materials Necessary to Complete the Work in Accordance with Established
Procedures

Aside from having the skills and techniques in completing a job requirement, a computer technician
must also be well aware of the tools and materials needed in doing so. A wide range of different
materials are available and each one is more suitable than another. This is why determining which
material to use is key to accurately complete a job requirement.

Different materials are needed in the installation or repair of computer systems and networks. Materials
for completing the installation may vary depending on the specification of the job requirement. Common
materials used in computer system and network installation or repair are as follows:

 Cables or Wires– these are used as a mean to transfer data or electricity. Examples are
unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cables and power cables.
 Hardware Components – these are the physical components of a computer system. Example
are hard disk drives, CD-ROMS and other peripherals.
 Jacks or Connectors – these are used at the ends of cables in order to secure them in their
appropriate port. Examples are registered jack (RJ) 45, and universal serial bus (USB).
 Software – these refer to coded programs that tell the computer what to do. Examples are
operating systems, drivers, and application programs.
 Tools – these are devices or instruments, usually hand-held, used to carry out a particular
purpose. Examples are screwdrivers, wrenches and pliers.
Normally, these materials are readily available within the premises of the workplace. The property
custodian is the one responsible in safekeeping the said materials. Specifying the needed materials and
the description of the job requirement is needed in order to obtain them. In case that a requested
material is not readily available, a purchase order must be accomplished so that they can be procured
immediately.

Some policies and procedures in obtaining materials needed are as follows:

 A template or a Materials Requisition Form must be used in all requests. This must be duly
signed and noted by an immediate supervisor.
 Request the materials ahead of time. This will give the property custodian ample time to
determine whether it is readily available or needs to be purchased.
 Precisely specify the materials to be requested so that the correct ones will be issued.
 Determine the quantity of the materials needed. Proper estimation is key so that running out of
materials during the completion of the job will be avoided.
 Excess materials must be returned to the property custodian.
 For inexhaustible materials like tools and software, make sure to return them in proper
operating condition after use.

Following an established set of policies and procedures in obtaining the materials needed to complete a
job requirement will help in the proper monitoring and inventory. This will also ensure that the correct
materials will be issued to complete work acceptably and effectively.
