Gemology Course
Business oriented Course for the beginners and those who are already in the Gem or Jewelry trade

• Learn about Gem varieties; mining methods, Localities, natural crystal shapes, properties & how to identify them.
• Practice the use of Gem testing instruments. Learn the separation of natural, synthetic & treated gems.
• Develop the skills to handle gems , assess the quality of the cut & the valuation of gems
• Understand the markets for different gems, Valuation, business procedures, regulations & the operation of the
international and local gem industry.
• Learn from those who are actually in the gem industry & find out many things which are never found in books

Duration : 3 months , Part-time ( Once a week)

Registration fee: Rs.5000 Course Fee: Rs.30,000 (can be paid by 3 installments)

 Introduction to gems & the gem industry, Qualities of a gemstone, Classification of gems

 Assessing a gemstone (4C’s), Professional Handling of gemstones, Use of Torch and 10X Loupe

 Optical effects (star, Cat’s eye, colour change, Iridescence, luster, brilliance, sparkle etc)

 Understanding the Formation & mining methods of gem minerals. Primary & Secondary deposits

 Crystals, Crystal habits & Systems, Amorphous, Polycrystalline

 Physical properties of gems ( Hardness, SG, Cleavage)

 Optical properties of gems (Refraction, Double refraction, Pleochroism ), Good colour direction in a gem

 Gem testing instruments ( Polariscope, Dichroscope, Refractometer, Spectroscope, Microscope, UV light,


Diamond tester)

 Corundum (Ruby, Sapphire, Padparadscha, Yellow / Pink / White sapphire , Geuda etc)

 Chrysoberyl, Beryl, Quartz, Garnet, Diamond, Spinel, Taaffeite , Musgravite, Topaz, Tourmaline, Zircon, ,
Peridot, Tanzanite, Moonstone, Opal, Jade, Turquoise , lapis Lazuli , Malachite

 Organic gems ( Pearl, Coral, Amber, Ivory, Jet)
