Tony Cragg is a famous British sculptor, born Liverpool in 1949. As a child growing up, Cragg travelled a lot around
Britain due to his fathers’ job, meaning that
he had attended multiple schools
throughout his childhood.
As a boy he wanted to work on a farm,
looking after the various animals, while
living off the land similar to his grandfather.
As a boy he also enjoyed collecting and
sorting things, such as his fossil collection.

During his early years, he worked at the
Natural Rubber Producers Research
Association, where he took on a role as a laboratory technician between 1966 to 1968. While working, his job was
to build the experiments, mix chemicals then conduct them as instructed, and write his findings. In that time period,
he began to draw. Cragg found that there was a lot of interesting shapes and forms that came from within that
laboratory, which directed his decision into attending an art school.
In the 1970s, Cragg used found materials to produce his art pieces. However, his true breakthrough came at a
time when he was studying for his sculpture MA at the Royal Collage
of Art. While he was at school he was liberated by the arts, “In the Figure 2 'Stack' (1975) Tony Cragg
20 century no one told you what to do” (T. Cragg (2016)).
