Dear Mr. Bueno,

I am writing to you in regards to , French teacher at Granada High School. We

learned that is not going to be given tenure and will not be teaching French at Granada next
year. We are shocked and dismayed about this news. Our daughter, Maia Thelen, loves as a
teacher, and from talking to my daughter, I know that many other students feel the same. I have also
talked with on several occasions and know that she is an outstanding and inspirational
French teacher. I have been a teacher myself for over twenty years (Biology Faculty at Las Positas
College) and can recognize a dedicated teacher who is going above and beyond the standard
expectations. students and we parents appreciate her! Furthermore, is trained
in the IB curriculum and can therefore not be easily replaced. In fact, why on Earth would you want to
replace i?

I highly recommend that you reconsider your decision.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Barbara Zingg

Dear Board,

I learned yesterday from my daughter that • • • • • her French instructor, was informed, in class and in front of

students, that she was not being offered a position next year. Aside from the questionable professionalism of doing

this publicly, I feel it's important to point out this seems like a serious error.

• • • • is a wonderful educator and she has fostered a love of the French language and culture in my daughter and

has helped her to achieve a high level of proficiency. The program she created Is creative and engaging In a way that Is

all to rare.

Given the strongly positive experience my daughter has had with • • • • · It's truly baffling to think of ANY school

letting her go - much less doing so In such an undignified fashion. Witnessing this was very upsetting to my daughter.

I don't know if you have the power to revisit this decision but I do very much hope you will have the inclination to do so.

1
I've never written on behalf of a teacher before a n d • • • • continuing to teach at Granda will not benefit my

daughter directly since there is no AP program (a shame). She is a great teacher and anyone chosen to fill her shoes will

look the worse for the comparison.

I hope that at the very least you will pass along to the Principal the high regard we have f o r - and our desire

to have her remain at Granda.

To all whom it may concern,

I am writing to express my deep concern on the French 18 program on behalf of myself

and the other students. We are all very saddened by the news that may/will not
be returning next fall. Hearing this was a shock, I would have never imagined even the thought
to remove her from the teachers of the district to be a consideration.
I understand that the students and parents are not allowed to know all the details on why
she is not being reelected to continue teaching here in the Livermore District. Some of the
information is confidential and we do not know what happened to create this consideration. In
not knowing all the details, I can only express my opinion of by what I have
seen in class. Though we cannot know all of the details, do we not have some right to
understand why a teacher whom we care for dearly will not be returning? Is there not anything
that we can know? All we have heard is that she was not "the right fit", which is very confusing . 1
have understood that these decisions are not reversed often or even at all. I also understand
that parents have pushed back before on other teachers being let go, however this time we, the
students, are pushing back. We are upset, confused, angered, and deeply concerned.
Teachers, like all people, make mistakes and are definitely far from the ideal model.
• • • • • • h a s been a role model to all of her students. I am under the impression that
something happened behind the scenes with a colleague or other staff member perhaps? 1
would like to ask, what is more important; a teacher who has a phenomenal reputation with her
students or a potential conflict between staff? It is from my understanding that a teacher's job is
to teach the students, and has excelled with that. How many other teachers
have been able to raise the AP scores from 50% passing to 100% passing in just one year?
They teach us in school that later we will not be able to choose our colleagues and that is why
we must stick we groups we are assigned with in various circumstances. Is that not how it works
anymore? Is the colleague relation more important than the performance of the teacher? Again,
I do not know what has caused this decision to be made thought if It were to have to do with a
colleague or staff conflict, I should hope that the teacher would receive help rather than being
removed from her job.
To all of u s • • • • • • h a s been the highlight of our school days. I can speak for
myself when I say I have never met a teacher as committed, devoted, successful, loving,
encouraging, and powerful as before in my whole student career. I come from
Livermore High School just to take her class. French is offered at Livermore, and I could have
easily stopped after French 3. Meeting was the sort of moment where I knew 1
just had to be a part of her class. Her enthusian when she met me spoke to me immediately.
Walking into her classroom to meet her mid way through my Sophomore year, I expected her to
say that she would not be able to make it work or that it would be too complicated of a transition
between schools. Instead she surprised me immediately and went straight to, " I would love to
have you in my class!! How can we make this work?!". Now I am in her first period class and 1
love it. She has qualities that are rare and are not found commonly among teachers. She is
enthusiastic, her face lights up. She is genuinely thrilled to be teaching us. Speaking as a
student, the rest of my teachers rarely ever show this enthusiasm but with we
are lucky to receive it every morning. She acknowledges not just the class as a whole, but each
and every individual as well. The connection she maintains with her students is truly admiring.
There are teachers that still do not even know my name. At the end of new and different
activities and tests, asks us, "Did that help? How can I make it help? I need to
know so I can better teach all of you." She uses those exact words. I have never come across a
teacher that I have been so amazed by. The power she has to captivate our attention for the
whole 70 minutes of the period is insane. Every student is paying attention. Every student learns
something new every single day when in her class. There will be no replacement that can live
up to those expectations we now have for the new teacher next fall.

•••lil•a Replacing is not just about replacing any ordinary teacher. Replacing
means replacing the heart of French at Granada. Replacing • • • • • •
means depriving us students of an extraordinary teacher. A teacher that is hard to find.
Replacing will harm the students in all her french classes. We all look forward
to the 70 minutes we get to spend in her class every day. Replacing will be
taking away our enthusiasm in learning french and participating in the 18 program .
Where will you find someone who has and will continue to impact students so heavily?
Where will you find another French teacher to teach the language. Where will you find someone
with her potential? How will you be able to restore our enthusiasm once she is gone? Is it worth
it? I am asking because I am terrified. I have one more year to go in this district and I am
terrified. If teachers like her will be forced to go, what will be left? I ask that you please
reconsider your decision to terminate her time here.

Thank you for reading my concerns, I would love to meet with any of you to discuss this matter
face to face if that is at all a possibility.

With concern,

Subject Pending dismissal of GHS teacher

It has come to my attention that the Livermore school board is considering the dismissal of• • • • • • a :, lead French language teacher at
Granada high school. I do not know the cause, but I am dismayed at this news! is an exceptional French teacher with genuine
enthusiasm for the subject matter and for her students. She is one of the very best teachers we have encountered at Granada. Her students (and
their parents) are extremely fond of her because she has inspired real excitement for her students in learning the French language. She teaches in a
way that not only educates them in the academic forms of the language, but in conversational and social terms as well . She embraces global
thought and culture in her teaching. Her project assignments are creative, from learning about foods and culture of various regions to exploring
French literature both new and old. She teaches in the expert style that is both fun and highly e ducation al, simultaneously. Instead of just
utilizing basic memorization techniques, she strives to give her students a culturally authentic French education. As a result, real learning of the
language is achieved and retained. Her commitment to excellence is unparalleled!
• • • • • • must also be highly praised for her work in organizing an exchange of French and American students; we had the great pleasure
of hosting my daughter's French pen pal when the French students were visiting in early February. The experience was wonderful for the entire
family, but especially for my daughter who was inspired to speak conversational French even more so that she and our guest could expand their
friendship. The friendship that's been established has become so valuable to my daughter; she and her French friend remain in continuous contact,
interacting by speaking both French and English interchangeably over social media. Even after our French guest left, I watched my daughter

Mr. Bueno,
I have heard that is being let go. She is a very enthusiastic and inspiring teacher. She
is also very understanding. My son suffers from anxiety and depression and has trouble
completing work sometimes. When I emailed her about it she was super understanding and even
made a point to compliment my son's ability even though his grade was bad at the time from
missing work. I can't express enough how nice it was for her to see past his issues and how at
ease it made me feel.

She has gone out of her way to recruit students for the IB program and has even offered to
sacrifice her own summer schedule to help the kids learn who cannot fit the 3A class into this
Spring trimester.

We have had many rigid teachers who only see a student in terms of how good their grades are.
She is unique, she cares about the person and she is a valuable asset to this school.

Please reconsider letting her go. We need more teachers like her, not less.

Hello,

According to my gmail inbox, you have received quite a few of these emails in the past 24 hours!

As with all the others, my daughter was distraught to hear ot11•••••potential departure from Granada next year.
She was in tears.

Any teacher who can inspire that kind of emotion and passion in her students deserves a second look. She inspires that
kind of passion because she exhibits that kind of passion - for her subject and her students. The sy have all learned so
much from her!

I know sometimes that passionate people can rub others the wrong way, and perhaps this is why has been

has had on the students of this district!

While I am very well aware that you can not discuss personnel decisions with parents, as I am unable to attend tonight's
board meeting I can only beg you to speak to Mr. Daley and Ms. Bowers and together reconsider this fateful decision.

You could never fmd another qualified French teacher who cares more about her subject or her students than..._

decision.

Last year due to the sudden cancellation of the French AP in GHS, our daughter almost dropped

As parents, we know it is not easy to fmd a second language teacher who's native speaker,

continue her French learning journey with this amazing teacher next year.

student for 10 days and my daughter will be leaving in just a few short weeks to stay in France. has personally overseen all aspects

I urge you to investigate and consider her release carefully.

I also have an older child, who graduated in 2011 , who took French throughout high school. He

Hello,

I am baffled by the decision to fire at the end of this school year. She is an outstanding
French teacher, who has done nothing but inspire my son to achieve more. Since being in her class,
besides learning French , my son has decided he wants to pursue the 18 diploma. A great deal of the
reason he is seriously interested in this program is enthusiasm for 18 French. We see
absolutely no logical reason to remove an excellent teacher from a program she is well suited for.

If this decision stands, I cannot guarantee my son's continued interest in pursuing the 18 diploma. His and
my faith in the ability of GHS to successfully offer this program , when this sort of decision could surprise
us again at any moment, has seriously been shaken. You are asking us to trust that the 18 will help him
get into college, and succeed there. 18 has no history at GHS, so you are asking us to trust you in this
based on your current words and actions. I am sorry to say that these actions -- risking my son's ability to
fulfill the French portion of his degree by removing a dedicated teacher from the staff- do not give either
of us the confidence that this program will be successful.

I have to strongly protest this decision, I do not believe it is in the best interests of the students, the
French department, or the 18 program.

adversely affect the quality of French as a language/high quality standard of education at
GHS.

Thank you for patience and for taking the time to read this email.

Sincerely
Remi & Marietta Awosanya
2nd time parents at GHS

Subject: Save Our French Teacher

Dear decision makers,

To those of you who decided to let our French teacher go, we have attached our petition. Please take time to read
our comments we've made on why we signed this petition and how you'll change our lives by takin1gg=====~
out of it. We aren't worried that she won't find another job, we're worried that we won't find anothe~ .
By that I mean a teacher who goes above and beyond teaching us the course material and what's going to be on the
test, but making the class applicable to our lives after high school. As some of you might have seen, we've taken after
the French custom of being very passionate about what we love, and it's very disheartening when all of our efforts are
for nothing. Some of my peers heard that was given her official notice that she wouldn't be coming
back next year and said they almost expected it, that no matter what we do, our voices mean nothing. 1hope that
they are all wrong and that all this effort for something we truly care about isn't for nothing. We're taught to be
independent thinkers and to fight for what we think is right, but when we encounter a situation in real life it does't play
out like we've been told it would. For the rest of our lives we will remember that standing up for what we believe in
doesn't pay off, including speaking at the Livermore School Board on the night before finals. At Granada our mission
statement is "Granada High School develops caring, knowledgeable, and active lifelong learners ready to contribute
and thrive in an interconnected and changing world". If trying to be active students and defending what we care about
gets us nowhere, then you have just reversed the purpose of your mission for Granada students.

Sincerely,

caring, knowledgeable, and active lifelong learner ready to

Georgia Higgins, an aspiring
contribute and thrive in an interconnected and changing world

Subject: , Our wonderful French teacher!

Dear member of the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District,

News today that will not be renewed for the 2017-2018 school year left us speechless. Our
son attends GHS and is enrolled in IB Program (he is a Diploma student). Based on our experience-
• •ais a devoted instructor who works tirelessly for the students. For instance, last summer she
offered private classes to my son during summer vacation to help him prepare for IB French, which is an
advanced class. We have rarely experienced such a dedication to student success from a teacher at GHS!
No wonder why her dedication and hard working ethics are attracting students motivated to learn
french or join the IB Program.
• • • • • • •• is critical to the IB Program . Without her involvement it is difficult to envisioned
us pursuing the IB program and we suspect many other parents feel the same. We urge to reconsider
the decision to let her go.
Please use your authority and influence to do the right thing.
Sincerely,
Carine and Gilles Pokam

Good Evening,

I'm writing to express my extreme disappointment in LVJUSD's decision not to bring back • • • •
• •for the 2017/2018 school year.

As a parent of 3 children who have attended Granada High School for almost 10 years, in my opinion
• • • • • • stands out as an exceptional educator. She has gone above and beyond to ENGAGE
students and has directly impacted her students' desire to learn, as well as their success in learning the
French language. More importantly, she demonstrates that she cares about each and every student,
and instills confidence in their abilities, which carries forward to their other studies.

I have rarely seen teachers at Granada High School with the dedication, determina~ion and patience of
• • • • • •· She is a role model for other teachers within the foreign language department and
within the district. It is my sincere hope that you will seriously reconsider her future with Granada High
School. It would be a travesty for our children to let her go.

Sincerely,

Trish Puso
