Course Description
This course is a collegiate choral ensemble that emphasizes the study and performance of a
broad range of choral literature. To that end, vocal technique, score study/analysis and aural
skills are emphasized in every rehearsal. This ensemble is considered a major ensemble fulfilling
the requirements for the BME, BA and BM degrees and may serve as an elective for students
pursuing the MM. This is a one-credit course and requires at least 30-60 minutes preparation
for each rehearsal per week. It is up to you practice and be ready for rehearsals.

While an audition is required, the artistic and educational purpose of this choir is to accept and
move forward with singers from a wide variety of experience and education in fast-paced,
challenging rehearsals. The work of this class is ensemble singing – and very voice matters. No
matter where you are – (2 steps from your MET audition, or in your first singing group,) you
matter to me and to this group. To that end, please take it upon yourself to look around the
room, engage freely in the exchange of air and space with others around you. We will all be
taking risks, pushing our limits and trying each other’s patience.

Student Learning Outcomes

 By the end of the course students will demonstrate proper phrasing and diction in
various styles of choral repertoire performed.
 Students will choose an individual vocal goal and work towards improvement
throughout the semester.
 Students will demonstrate understanding of performance practice, compositional
techniques and music history of choral repertoire through written program notes and
analytic essay.
