Christ The King Sunday

Rev. Leigh Benish

Scripture: Psalm 93; John 18: 33-37

Then they said to him, “Please ask God for advice.
Try to find out whether we’ll have success on our
journey.” The priest answered them, “Go in peace.
The Lord is pleased with your journey.” –Judges 8:5-6
I like to talk about life as a journey. It’s a very fitting image. Sometimes there is
smooth sailing; things seem to go the way we think they should, without obstacles. At
other times there are detours; things don’t go exactly as planned, but we figure it out.
And, at others, there are roadblocks; there is simply no moving ahead.

A life of faith is no different. There are times when we feel very spiritually connected
with God, and others when God seems nowhere to be found. There are times of
incredibly faith and times of deep, deep doubt. There are times when we are sure of
God’s presence, and there may even be times when we question God’s very existence.

It’s been a journey for all of us to get to this place at this point in time. Our lives have
each taken their own path – some windier than others – to bring us here. I recently went
on a quite a journey of my own. Not only did I do the physical travel of 1,400 miles
across 7 states to make my way to Butler, but I also went on a spiritual journey. I had to
rely on God in new ways, and trust the Spirit as we were led to this place.

And, here we are! This is the time when our journeys converge. Together, we will grow
spiritually, serve compassionately, worship faithfully, and commune peacefully.
Together we will listen for God’s voice and for God’s call. Together, we will do our best
to serve God with joy, energy, and fidelity.

My family and I are so excited to be in Butler, and we are looking forward to the many
ways we will journey together. I’ve been on lots of trips in my life, and I know for sure
that traveling companions make all the difference. Even those who start a trip as
complete strangers create an unbreakable bond by the end. When we share experiences,
we become family.

So, I’d love to get to know you, my traveling companions! Feel free to stop by my
office for a chat (I’ll always have chocolate available). Once I find my weekly rhythm, I
will have regular office hours at a local coffee shop, and I’d love to enjoy a cup and your
company. One of my primary areas of focus early on is to simply get to know people
and build relationships, and I look forward to every opportunity to do so.

As we embark on this journey together, there will be obstacles and roadblocks, but we
must trust that God is in control and that God has a plan. I look forward to traveling
together with you!

Peace-
Pastor Leigh

FULL DREAM AHEAD IN FAITH!
Dear Friends in Christ,

By now you should have received the 2018 stewardship letter and pledge form. Our
stewardship message comes from Acts 2:17 and reads: “In the last days it will be, God
declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your
daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men
shall dream dreams.” This is a timely message for Hill Church as we welcome our new
pastor, the Reverend Leigh Benish and begin to dream about where God is leading our
family of faith.

If you have not already done so, please prayerfully consider how you can support the
mission and ministries of Hill Church. Please complete the pledge form that came with your
stewardship letter and return it in the envelope provided. If you have misplaced your pledge
form you may use the form included with this newsletter article. You may return your pledge
form by mailing it to the church office or placing it in the offering plate during worship.
Pledges will be consecrated to the glory and honor of God on Sunday, November 11, 2018.

Thank you for honoring God through your support of the ministries and mission of Hill
Church. Your generosity and support will help Hill Church fulfill God’s plan for our future.

In Faith and Service,

The Stewardship Committee

I want to thank so many for their letters, notes, and calls to me in my loss of Shirley, who has been the
bright light of my life for over sixty years. My heart is broken in my missing her. Our life together in
Christian ministry, teaching, caring, loving, and laughter will culminate, I pray, in our beautiful reunion
"in heaven as it was on earth". Hill Church was our most happy church 13 years into our retirements.
Wonderful friends and shared services. Shirley and I love you. Thank you for sharing my grief. - Mike

The Heist Family would like to thank everyone who took the time to donate food and money to the
Dassa Weekend Power Pack Back Pack program! The response of our Church family truly
overwhelmed us AGAIN! We are so grateful to say we donated 40 canned pastas, 46 mac and
cheese, 17 tunas, 15 soups, 84 puddings, 28 juice boxes, 114 fruit cups, 44 apple sauces, 136 fruit
bars, 93 breakfast bars/cereals, and 216 crackers/snacks/chips for a GRAND TOTAL of 833
items!! With the generous monetary donations to this program we were able to purchase 197
Hormel Complete/Dinty Moore dinners and 221 cans of dinner soup, the items
most needed. All these items were packed into our SUV, taking up the entire
back and part of the middle row, and delivered to Dassa McKinney Elementary
School on Friday, October 12th. We thank you so very much for your wonderful
generosity! Thank you again and may God bless everyone who was so generous!
With love and gratefulness, Gregory, Elean, Sam, Seth, and Bella Heist.
NEWS FROM GHANA
We are about to send funds to the Bubiashie Committee for scholarships to be awarded soon.
Please prayerfully consider contributing to this mission as it benefits young women in
Ghana. As you may recall, Hill Church has been doing this for nine years. The committee
is also planning to send Christmas cards to each student, just as a way of keeping in touch.

PRAYER CONCERNS CONTINUE

Please continue to keep the Bubiashie District Churchs, Bernard Daddy, chairperson of the Bubiashie
Scholarship Committee, as well as the students, and Joshua Heikkila, the West Africa Liaison for the PC
(USA), in your prayers. Also for Dr. McWilson ‘Koku’ Atakro, the Executive Presbyter and Moderator for
the West Volta Presbytery.

What a wonderful time we are having at Wednesdays on the Hill! Despite being
shorthanded this term, everyone is pitching and keeping the wheels turning. The
older kids are finishing up their Journeys with Moses and are about to meet a new
leader for God’s People- Joshua. The Preschool folks have been learning about many
Old Testament heroes and it looks like they have enjoyed every minute while
keeping busy with crafts and games and a weekly visit from their Doggy Friend,
Theo.

Please join us at 6:30 on November 14 for a brief presentation on what we have been
up to this fall. You can count on songs from the Preschool crowd, a special song and
dance based on our lesson theme by the Grades 1-3 class and their Teen mentors.
The Grades 4-6 class will present a short play about the bad kids from Holy Moses
Christian School and what the learn about following God! Then we’ll adjourn to the
fellowship hall for AWESOME DESSERTS. Anyone who is willing to bring a dessert,
please let Kathleen Davis know as soon as possible.

Baking Day - all teens are encouraged to come to the kitchen on Saturday, November
3rd at 2:00 PM to bake brownies and cupcakes for the Election Day Bake Sale. The
Teens going to the National Presbyterian Youth Triennium next summer will benefit
from proceeds of the sale so we are excited to help stock the table.

The Tuesday Morning Bible Study for Women has just begun their second book-
Ruth. Please feel free to come join in the discussions. We try to tread a wide path
between the meaning of the text and parallels with today’s world. Delicious snacks
are served at break time and the diversity of opinion is always stimulating.

Have you found six green footprints so far? Keep looking! The puzzle with all the
important words from the WOTH lessons will be in next month’s newsletter and you
may win the grand prize!
Thank You! The Mission Support Committee thanks the
congregation for their generous donations of coats to benefit
the Bundle Up Butler program. Fifty two men’s, women’s,
and children’s coats were taken to the Center for Community
Resources for distribution later this month.

Our Nurture Committee will be sending out a letter to the congregation

about having family pictures taken on November 9 and 10th.

As you may remember, Andy Chaff collects items for the Yellow Ribbon Girls located in Ellwood City. The
Yellow Ribbon Girls began when sisters Bonnie, Patti, and Vicki’s brother, MAJ John Stich, an Army Critical Care
Nurse, was deployed as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in early 2003. He asked his family to get involved. They
started with a few yellow ribbons and pins and have not stopped making over 10,000 bows and pins of every size
imaginable. With the donations from the bows and pins and with the help of friends, neighbors, schools and
churches they have been able to ship over 38,000 packages and counting. John retired as a Lt. Colonel after 20
years of active duty in the United States Army. He resides in the Ellwood City area with his wife and family.

Here are some responses from some happy recipients.

I serve in Kabul, Afghanistan in a base called New Kabul Compound (NKC). In my office, we have all branches
of service. Soon, we are going to be an international office with someone from the Ukraine working in our office.

I am a Civil Servant who works directly for the Navy. I am one of the few people in this office who is not in
uniform.

I will be here until March of 2019 and am happy to share care packages with others in my office and on base. On
the larger base, we have Americans, Mongolians, Norwegians, British, and Germans. I’m sure I would find a few
other nations if I tried.

This is my first deployment, which I volunteered. I am amazed, thankful, and blessed by the support of strangers.
Care packages are appreciated by everyone.

IT’S SHOEBOX TIME!

Christmas is about sharing the gift of God's Son, Jesus Christ, with the world.
Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to poor children around the
world through gift-filled shoeboxes and the Good News of God’s love. You can
share God’s love with needy children in Honduras, Kosovo, or another country
by participating with other members of our church. We will have more
information in an upcoming church bulletin insert, or you can visit the Operation Christmas child website
at www.samaritanspurse.org/occ for ideas, boy and girl box labels, and an informative video. You can
start by filling out and coloring the enclosed letter to put in the shoebox. Also consider if you want your
shoebox to go to a boy or girl and what age group you would like to buy for. There are three age groups: 2-
4, 5-9, and 10-14. The 10-14 group sees the least amount of shoeboxes donated so we encourage you to
consider them. All shoeboxes need to be brought to church on or before Sunday, November 18th to make
sure that the children receive them in time for Christmas. If shopping and filling shoeboxes are not for you,
we will also accept monetary donations. It costs $9 to mail one shoebox.
DUE TO NEW CUSTOMS REGULATIONS, TOOTHPASTE AND CANDY,
INCLUDING CHOCOLATE, ARE NO LONGER ALLOWED!
Don't forget to bring your shoebox gift to church on or before Sunday,
November 18th. What a perfect gift to give in honor of Jesus' birthday!
