PRACTICE PROBLEMS -Equilibrium

1.A 20.0-kg uniform plank is supported by the floor at one

end and by a vertical rope at the other as shown in the
figure. A 50.0-kg mass person stands on the plank a
distance three-fourths of the length plank from the end on
the floor. θ=30°

(a) What is the tension in the rope?

(b) What is the magnitude of the force that the floor exerts on
the plank?

2. A uniform horizontal beam with a length of 8.00m and a

weight of 200N is attached to a wall by a pin connection. Its far
end is supported by a cable that makes an angle of 53.0° with
the horizontal. If a 600N person stands 2.00m from the wall,
find the tension in the cable,as well as the magnitude and
direction of the force exerted by the wall on the beam.
3. You are asked to design the decorative mobile shown. The
strings and rods have negligible weight and the rods are to
hang horizontally. A) Draw the FBD for each rod. B)Find
the weight of the balls A,B and C. C) Find the tensions in
the strings S1, S1 and S3.
