× ing and ÷ ing by tan θ + secθ

tan θ + secθ − 1 tan θ + secθ

= ×
tan θ − secθ + 1 tan θ + secθ
=
( tan θ + secθ − 1)( tan θ + secθ )
tan 2 θ − tan θ secθ + tan θ + tan θ secθ − sec 2 θ + secθ
=
( tan θ + secθ − 1)( tan θ + secθ ) ∵ 1 + tan 2 θ = sec 2 θ
tan 2 θ − sec2 θ + tan θ + secθ ∴ tan 2 θ − sec2 θ = −1

=
( tan θ + secθ − 1)( tan θ + secθ )
−1 + tan θ + secθ
= tan θ + secθ = R.H.S
