The Navigator’s USA Program Director and our network of leaders are always here to support you. Have fun and happy navigating!

2

Welcome to the new Navigators USA Badge Book 1.0. We’ve taken your feedback and created a well rounded set of badges to encourage your Navigators to explore the categories of Mind, Body, Planet and Freedom found within our Moral Compass. This is the first iteration of the new badge book, which we’re releasing in digital format. As you read through it, make note of anything that you like or things that could be improved. As is the Navigators way, we need your feedback to make this book the best it can be before we go to print! Send your feedback to our Program Director, Kate, at kate@navigatorsusa.org.

In the Navigator spirit of creativity and autonomy, chapter leaders have created meaningful traditions in a variety of ways over the years. To celebrate achievements, memories, events, and accomplishments many chapter leaders have chosen to use badges or other tokens. Whether collected on a vest, a lanyard, or even a cape, these mementos can be treasures for a lifetime.

This badge book has been created by leaders, for leaders, as one option for chapters. The book may be used as is, or adapted in any way to fit your needs and those of your Navigators. You may like to create new activities, choose to earn together as a chapter or individually, choose another system for badge earning, or choose not to use badges at all.

To use this book, we have divided it into four sections, based on our Navigator’s Moral Compass - Mind, Body, Planet, and Freedom. In the appendix, you’ll also find several safety pledges that correspond to badge requirements. Badges are listed within the four sections, with each badge offering 17 activities to choose from. Starred activities offer an extra challenge. To earn a badge, we suggest these as starting guidelines:

STARGAZERS - To earn a badge, complete 3 activities. You may choose the stargazer-specific choices or any other appropriate activity.

JUNIORS - To earn a badge, complete 4 activities and earn at least one star.

SENIORS - To earn a badge, earn 4 stars.

As a Navigator I promise:

To do my best to create a world free of prejudice and ignorance.

To treat people of every race, creed, lifestyle and ability with dignity and respect.

To strengthen my body and improve my mind to reach my full potential.

To protect our planet and preserve our freedom.

to improve our minds. MIND badges

aim to improve not only our knowledge

but also our creative and critical thinking

skills. Examples might include: visiting

Websites like code.org (Hour of Code), MadeWithCode and Scratch have hundreds of free tutorials, lesson plans and activities to help you teach your chapter programming; you don’t need a Computer Science degree or expensive software.

3. Create a bracelet or keychain with your name written in colored beads, coded using the ASCII Binary Alphabet.

5. Play a board game with your chapter or family that teaches programming (such as Qwirkle, Robot Turtles, Code Master, Code Monkey Island, etc).

6. Complete a visual or performing art project that explores loops and repeated steps. Ex- amples include: Loopy Dance Party (https://goo.gl/ qr7ASD), Functional Suncatchers (https://goo.gl/

1. Play a game where you take turns giving and following com- mands. Examples include “Simon Says” or the “If/Then/Else Game” ( https:// goo.gl/bpcwd8 )

4. Complete an un- plugged activity where you “program” other Navigators using “commands”. Examples include:

a. Algorithm Pictionary:

for another person to draw the selected picture. The person drawing must follow directions exactly and only do what is instructed. Goal is to have the 2 pictures match as closely as possible.

b. Graph Paper Programming

Place a stack of index

2. Share the “algorithm” (in words or pictures) for brushing your teeth, washing your hands or other activ- ity that you perform daily following a specific sequence.
