Course Overview

a. Course Description:

This course aims to introduce students the essential concepts and skills involved in network and
security management, with particular emphasis on organization’s critical functions.

b. Course Objectives

The course should enable the student to:

1. Understand the network management functions, along with the tools and
technologies currently available to support these functions.

2. Managing TCP/IP based networks by integrating appropriate security


mechanisms into the existing network systems.

3. Use technology-based practices and a systematic approach to perform


network troubleshooting.

4. Apply appropriate risk management strategy and mitigating the risks to


critical data, systems, and applications.

c. Course Outcomes:

1. Explain the layers of network management, functions of network management


components/tasks and the challenges & critical factors relating to the management of
computer networks.
2. Compare and contrast significant network management standards such as SNMP V1,
V2, V3, RMON, CMIS/CMIP, TMN, WBEM etc.
3. Differentiate between Service Level Agreement (SLA), Operational Level Agreement
(OLS) and Underpinning Contract (UC).
4. Use effective network management and monitoring tools.
5. Evaluate performance of computer network and systems.
6. Formulate baselines for IT infrastructure performance and security.
7. Discuss the physical security measures to be considered to protect networking and
communication facilities from security threats and environmental hazards.
8. Describe respective contingency planning approaches (such as IRP, DRP, BCP) for
various security incidents and disasters.
9. Formulate network security policy in accordance with the security requirements of an
organization.

d. Time Frame:

Expected duration of this course is for 10 weeks
