My best guess is that the bus has a taller section in the back that got stuck on a
bridge/obstacle. < > discussions in r/Wellthatsucks X

how the hell are they so calm? or is it normal in this situation for people to think they should
get their belongings and get off..

IDK about happy but they walked away so it was definitely a good landing

Based on body movement it looks like they were at a stop and started to move too quickly
which ripped the carriages apart. They also start to climb out almost immediately meaning the
carriage had already stopped moving. Seems like the best case for a bad scenario

That lady in the front seat got up quick like aw hell no not today.
permalink embed save parent report reply
I ride these “extended” buses at least once a week and I’ve always wondered what the aftermath
would be if the back end disconnected. Now I know
permalink embed save report reply
I am still interested what the aftermath would have been like if it had moved at speed, not
starting from standstill.
permalink embed save parent report reply
Like I always wondered if the front end would keep going and if the back end when it fell
down would be at a steep enough angle to throw everyone forward or if it would flip over
permalink embed save parent report reply
I used to ride them for my old job too. And the ones I rode had seats on that connector piece!
< > discussions in r/Wellthatsucks X
I never understood why people would sit there. I would stand rather than sit on that death
trap. 25.9k · 248 comments

They have seats there? Never seen that. Here in Germany that's not a thing or I never
encountered a bus that has them. They always use NEOPLAN, Mercedes or MAN. Shouldn't
there also be a safety mechanism in place to prevent that and to protect the connector?
permalink embed save parent report reply

connector?
Yes, well this is not very typical. There are a lot of these buses going around all the
time, and very seldom does anything like this happen. I just don’t want people thinking
that articulated buses aren’t safe.
Some of them are built so the back doesn't fall off.
permalink embed save parent report reply
Certainly not, there are minimum requirements, for example, there needs to be
a steering wheel and a driver on the bus.
permalink embed save parent report reply
Last time I pulled the dinger on the bus they called the police.
permalink embed save parent report reply
Oh yeah something like that happened in Brazil, The driver already knew that shit was gonna
happen and told people to don't stay on that part of the bus.
permalink embed save report reply
How many?
At least a Brazilian.
permalink embed save parent report reply
After so many broken buses, you'd think they would have figured out how to make
them so the back doesn't fall off.
permalink embed save parent report reply
This video is actually from Brazil, this happened where I live lol.

Luxury. We used to have to get out of the lake at three o'clock in the morning, clean
the lake, eat a handful of hot gravel, go to work at the mill every day for tuppence a
month, come home, and Dad would beat us around the head and neck with a broken
bottle, if we were LUCKY!
permalink embed save parent report reply
Well we had it tough. We used to have to get up out of the shoebox at twelve
o'clock at night, and LICK the road clean with our tongues. We had half a handful of
freezing cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at the mill for fourpence every
six years, and when we got home, our Dad would slice us in two with a bread knife.
permalink embed save parent report reply
Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before
I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down
mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got
home, our Dad and our mother would kill us, and dance about on our graves
singing 'Hallelujah!’

Never have, never will. Also, don't stand under a ceiling fan, one day it will happen.
permalink embed save parent report reply
Try these:
standing halfway in an elevator, one foot on the outside and the other inside.
Stand (at a "safe" distance) by a fast moving train.
Reach your hand under the bed at night and/or reach your arm into your closet door with
the lights off.
Stand in front of your parked (but still running) car with your knees touching the bumper.
Get somewhere elevated at night, lay down on your back and stare up into the endless
void.
permalink embed save parent report reply

You can fuck right off with that. I get inside as fast as possible.
permalink embed save parent report reply
The elevator one is definitely the riskiest, as people really have died from this even
recently. Usually because a technician leaves it the maintenance mode that disables

My dad got stuck on one when he was a kid. He has about a 3 inch scar right under his
knee cap.
permalink embed save parent report reply
What about when the bus is packed? I stand there all the time
permalink embed save parent report reply
Like last week. Said to myself, "Hmm I kinda like this spot, its unique, not too many people
stand here too. " Never again.
permalink embed save parent report reply
I don't ride the public transit much, except for the rare shuttle to a football or baseball game.
But the one bus I was on had two seats in the section the pivoted.
permalink embed save parent report reply
To be fair these kind of articulated busses are actually quite safe, fractures like these a very
rare.

permalink embed save report reply
I like how the lady in the seat with the newly-improved view just casually stepped off.
permalink embed save report reply
The Joint Fail buzzer was probably going off intermittently which could have prompted the filming.
They are very sensitive and go off wayyy before there is ever a real problem.
I drive articulated busses and this would def not have made it through a safety check in the USA.
Maintenance checks them overnight (for signs of tearing in the rubber or wear on the joint) while
they are all in the depot one at a time as they run them through the in house car wash where I
work. Also Bus drivers do a walk around multiple times a day to make sure there are no changes
between shift change. so even if the drivers are lazy between shifts the first driver of the day will
have done a thorough check before leaving the depot at all.
People think the hardest part of a bus job is driving a massive vehicle, when in reality it’s
maintaining the regulations and red tape involved with safety to cover your own ass from liability
issues like this. they are put in place for a reason, this is why. It’s actually pretty airtight/idiot
proof from my experience.
